Lag Spikes When Two Or More Computers Are In Use
Feb 18, 2013
Since about a week ago, my room-mates and I have been getting lag spikes on the internet when more than one of us are on the internet at once, yet the connection is perfectly stable when there is only one active. ( Does not matter which one. )
I've run Avast, AVG and CCcleaner, on all the computers and the spikes still persist. I've also replaced my router with no results. Here's my system info and some tracerts showing the lag spikes
System info:
Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 640 Processor, AMD64 Family 16 Model 5 Stepping 3

About 2 weeks ago I have been getting lag spikes on my xbox and PC games, this never happened.I have no problem playing the game, no lag. Apart from these spikes that happen every 10-15mins.They last for about 5-10 seconds and seriously affect my game. (I get killed)
Would switching channel through the 02 Wireless internet control panel fix this? Am I on a bad channel?p.s. It is not possible for me to haveit wired, wireless only.

I've been having problems with my internet on my PC. I use it mostly for gaming (League of Legends specifically but it's also hooked up to my Xbox for internet connection), and I frequently (about every minute or so, sometimes more) get bad lag spikes when playing games. My character will freeze in place while I click wildly about and then appear somewhere else (and die or lose a kill).
The thing is, I'm connected to my Apple Airport which all other devices in the house are connected to (Wii, dad's Mac desktop, my Mac laptop), and only my PC gets this lag. Seems like a fairly generic problem but I have no idea what to do about it, so if you need more information let me know.

I have reason to be suspicious as to the game's relevance. These spikes are characterized by no packet loss, as measured by pingplotter and winmtr (more specifically, there is packet loss, but I've come to understand that because it does not continue on to subsequent jumps it's not an issue), and latency leaping to between 250 and 600ms across multiple hops, seemingly without pattern or form, for intervals
Here are some summaries of some extended pingplotter sessions. The suspicion that this is not entirely WoW related is recent, so I'm working on seeing if I can get similar results from some other sources.

I am playing a game, like Battlefield Bad Company 2. Every 5-15 minutes, I get 3 lag spikes. When I get the lag spikes, everyone who is using my internet, also gets it the same time as me. So my computer is not the problem. For example: I am just running, shooting people (online), and then, randomly, people are running on the spot for like 3 seconds, and then they teleport somewhere in front of them. And then it goes back to normal, then it happens again. It will happen 3 times.

Just recently built a new system with this wifi card in it, and I am experiencing random lag spikes of up at 2000ms when pinging my E3000 router. I've tried the stock firmware on the router as well as the tomato variety I was using. I've tried both Windows 8 and Linuxmint 14 and the problem still exists. I did not have this issue on my laptop, nor do I have the problem with my wife's laptop. Is there any sort of setting in the bios that might affect this that I am overlooking?I'm about to just call timewarner and have them relocate the cable modem to this room so I do not have to deal with wireless.

I have a problem with my wireless connection. I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit OS and bought a new NETGEAR genie router WNR2200. I am experiencing lag spikes in 1-2 second duration while playing games. These lag spikes freeze the game and send my ping sky high (ping 999ms). While browsing the interwebz I don't really notice the lag spikes because they are only a few seconds long.Changes I have made (PC):
Disabled Client for Microsoft Networks
Disabled ANOD Network Security Filter driver
Disabled QoS Packet Scheduler
Disabled File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
[code]....
Mode: Up to 300MbpsAfter all these changes and tweaks I still get the exact same problem I started out with. The above changes were recommended by users of random forums to fix wireless lag spikes. Using a cat5 cable is not preferred (and perhaps not possible) as I am renting from random people and the router is on the other side of the house.

At my university I have huge lag spikes when playing Hon (heroes of newerth) my friends are playing and have no issues. As of now, I have turned all the graphics down to the lowest settings, disabled every function of the windows firewall I could find, and ensured no other programs are running (even closed explorer) Any idea what could be causing this? (I have no antivirus active)

recently I've noticed sharp spikes on both my wireless and wired network connections, It's safe to say it's not a network card problem as all PCs are experiencing this problem. I ran a tracert and these are the results:Tracing route to [URL] [209.123.109.175]over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 4 ms 3 ms 9 ms 192.168.1.1
2 242 ms 33 ms 29 ms 10gi6-0-0-100.bras1ldv.akl.vf.net.nz [203.109.12
9.41]
[code]...
Trace complete. As you can see there is packet loss and a huge spike in ping time.

my internet has recently been spiking every 10-15 seconds constantly. Wired and wireless both experience the spike. My modem is SMCD3GN-RRR. Heres a ping to google.ca: I've called my ISP and they said everything was fine after they ran some tests. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

I have Planet modem ade-4400 linked to a Digitus ethernet Dn 5001a that I use to connect my 2nd PC.The problem is that everytime, both PCs are connected I constantly get lag spikes while playing games. Also, seemingly on random occasions, no matter what programs I run in the background my connection gets disabled with a yellow exclamation mark over my network icon. I get a "The default gateway is not available" error once I troubleshoot, and the connection works fine afterwards.
However, recently after I updated the windows I think, I get another error that says "The connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the Internet is broken" along with the gateway one. Also, recently, I started having lag spikes regardless of the other computer being connected to mine after the error, and once I turn on my pc. Could it be somehow related to Microsoft security essentials? Since I've installed it at about the same time when the lag-after-the-error started happening.
Error seems to happen more often when I watch something on the internet, or when I quickly browse through the web-pages, or when I'm downloading something. I'm using Windows 7, and another thing to note is that the other computer DOES NOT receive these kinds of errors, and I do believe it does not lag while playing games. The lag after the error and after I start up my pc goes away after some time.

My father recently bought a laptop with windows7, and while it is connected to the internet through the router, there is a lag spike every 20 or so seconds, which also shows up when pinging the router as a jump in ping. This happens wired and wireless and also affects other connections on the network (my desktop computers also get a spike in ping). I have isolated the problem to be with the laptop, because as soon as the laptop is disconnected from router completely there is no more spike in ping

It has always been the case with my laptop and another usb N adapter I bought a while back but this time when i upgraded my PC and got a DWA-552 adapter and the problem occurs again I was forced to try and debug it.PingPlotter had a constant ping check on my router's network address every second, every few minutes and sometimes seconds apart there would be 100+ ping spikes which always correlate with troublesome lag spikes in-game. And that's with Roaming Policy set to very low. Once set to normal it got much worse with 500+ ping spikes, and just to cement the correlation I set the policy to very high and 1000+ ping spikes happened.Could it be that DIR655 incorrectly reports to the adapter that it is about to drop the connection forcing a roam that results in nothing but a latency hiccup? I am not well versed in wireless mechanics. These ping spikes are often accompanied with packet loss.My DIR655 has several G cards connected to it (which work fine btw, my 552 seems to work fine in G mode too though I haven't tested it extensively yet - may be forced to since dir655 appears to be bugged with N mode) and several N cards that aren't used for gaming so this issue has never been a problem before.

This has been a problem for quite a while now, jumping from Shaw to Telus,I have completely exhausted, and I have no idea what's wrong.I live in a household with another family, and we share internet connections, Telus Fiber Optik, as of now. Me and my brother both have our own computer and are connected via wireless adapter, and the other family has one laptop with wireless connection.
The problem would be that randomly, the internet would slow down considerably, with pings going insanely high, like over 9000ms (not joking). At first,I thought I was just too far away from the router. So I moved to a room directly under the router, and the internet was completely fine for around 1 week, then the random ping spikes started to happen again. Now, I've tried tweaking wireless settings, and checking to make sure its just not my wireless adapter, however my brother's adapter is new, but it has the same problem too, so I doubt its the adapters fault.

I experience a 120 ping on speedtest.net (on average) to servers that i used to get up to 20 ping on and i experience 200 ping on league of legends servers that i used to get 100~ ping on.My laptop is running on windows 7, using panda antivirus and spybot search and destroy (i uninstalled mcafee).

While I download things it randomly drops to very low (3kbs) or randomly just stops completely, usually download is around 300kb/s+ and this only happens on my (homebuild) desktop, every other laptop/computer works fine. Also when playing online games (ex swtor) random lag spikes that last for minutes+ while the internet works just fine in browser. Whenever a problem occurs it always is fine just loading web pages, just downloads/online has problems.I have tried moving my computer around the house, trying wireless and lan and today i installed windows 7 64bit (was 32bit) hoping for a difference and still nothing. After this fresh install every driver is fully up to date. As the adapter only has wireless it would seem the problem also occurs with mobo (since plugged in for lan) Some bad connection in the case? edit Just open up the case everything is connected unless something is just broken.

I've been getting lag spikes with the WUSB600N. I am using Windows 7 64bit with service pack 1 installed. I had drivers version 3.0.1.0 installed and upgraded to version 3.0.10.0. After upgrading the problem got so so bad that I can't play online games at all. I tried rolling back drivers to 3.0.1.0 but it won't go back. I already tried reinstalling the drivers a few times and even reinstalled windows.

Ever since i upgraded my os from windows xp to windows 7 i've been getting lag spikes at least once every 5 minutes. With my ping going up to 1500 easily and staying up there for about 20-30 seconds. My brother is connected to the same router as me and he isn't experiencing any issue's with his internet connection (He is also using windows 7). Is this a common error?

I've been having this issue with my wireless connection for quite a few months now and up until now I've just dealt with it. With the release of Diablo 3 (whoo!) it's become unbearable with this lag spikes. My ping will be fine, steady around 50-90 but then randomly spike upwards of 400. After a few moments (literally a second or two) it'll drop back down to it's normal speed. This happens in all online games I play, WoW, League of Legends, DotA 2 and now Diablo 3, I have roadrunner and pay for 25 download and 1 upload so it should be more than enough to play the games I'd like, I'm also running on windows 7. I think part of the problem could be the fact that the router is in the basement and I'm on the second story. I have a netgear wndr3700v3 router and I set up a repeater in my room to see if that would work (asus rt-n12 router) and although it has increased my speed, I still have these ping spikes.

my ping spikes to 1k+ all the time, making online games pretty much unplayable. Sometimes I'll lag up to 3k ms and by the time my ping is back to normal, the game is so behind it is messed up forever.I've looked online for days trying to find solutions, and trying all kinds of things. The problem started after i reinstalled windows xp (it actually started right after my power flickered after i reinstalled, but i think that may be coincidence. I'm not sure though.). I've reformatted since then, but the problem still persists.I think the problem might be WZC, but when I try stopping the program like other people have done, my wireless network disconnects pretty soon after. I've also tried just using the intel software, but that didn't work either. It was fine for a while last night after I changed to the intel software, but after maybe an hour or so it went back to lagging.I have Intel PROSet Wifi agn 5100 as my network card. I'm on a laptop. I also tried doing a ping test in command on my mom's laptop, and it never spiked like mine. Is my network card maybe just too old? I got the laptop almost 4 years ago.

We've had our internet provider and the same setup for about 5 months before this with no problems. I first noticed this in gaming. My ping will stick to around 40-50 in a server, but continually spike to 80-100. I don't notice it all that much, but on others' screens I'm choppy and look laggy.I'm connected to a router, but it seems to happen while directly connected as well. It has nothing to do with others on the network either. The modem is old, not sure if that has anything to do with it, a Motorola SB4200.

This 3750X stack (3 members) has some 100% cpu spikes. Is this bad enough to start tracking down the cause(s) or is this somewhat typical and not a reason for concern? I just took this reading. How can you detemine when the 100% and 80% spikes occurred?

I have Comcast cable and prior to a couple days ago, it has always been smooth @ 36mbps download and 5mbps upload. I have a Netgear WNDR3700 and Motorola 6121 connected to my PC via Ethernet cable. Up until a couple days ago, I've been getting lag spikes where my games would completely freeze for a good 2-3 seconds and resume, as if the entire connection dropped and reconnected. I did a speedtest and I was getting around 4mbps download and 1-2mbps upload with huge fluctuation in speed.
I called Comcast and they said they were seeing a "red" signal error from their end so they sent out a tech to my house. He came over, changed some cables outside because they were corroded and that's about all he did. I tested my connection while he was still there and I was again getting 36mbps download and 5mbps upload. It was a quick 1-2 test so everything seemed normal until I started to see lag in games again.
I am getting the same lag spikes, albeit it's not as bad as before but it's still pretty annoying. Using speedtests, I am still getting 36mbps download but the graphs show that there are inconsistencies where there would be sudden drops in speed and picks back up still to show 36mbps. These drops are what I assume are the lag spikes. The upload is also suffering now, dropping down to 2-3mbps and it takes the test about 20-30seconds to load the upload portion of the test. Even loading web pages, sometimes it locks up for a few seconds longer than it should, which is normally instantaneous.
I have tried connecting my PC directly to the modem to bypass the router and am still getting the same lag, probably a little LESS but still the lag is there. My router is has always been updated to the latest firmware.
