Weird Ping Spikes - D-Link DWA-140 Wireless Adapter?
Dec 30, 2012
the problem is that I'm suffering from ping spikes. When I ping my router it looks something like this:
C:UsersNiklas>ping 192.168.1.1 -n 10
Skickar ping-signal till 192.168.1.1 med 32 byte data:
Svar från 192.168.1.1: byte=32 tid=991ms TTL=64
Svar från 192.168.1.1: byte=32 tid < 1 ms TTL=64
Svar från 192.168.1.1: byte=32 tid=2944ms TTL=64[code].....

I was having very high ping spikes (up to 2000ms) in my online gaming. I even had high spikes (up to 80ms) just pinging my router. It happened with every computer on the network. After several weeks, I narrowed it down to one thing: Enable DNS Relay. I unticked that, and instantly the spikes went away. However, my brother's Blackberry Playbook has been acting up now that DNS Relay is disabled. Basically, every day, the internet on that thing screeches to a halt, forcing him to reconnect to the network. It's basically a minor inconvenience, but it's one I want to correct. If I turn on DNS Relay again, the ping spikes will return. Interestingly, I switched ISPs during this time. I'm on cable now. I used to be on DSL with a different router, yet I had the exact same problem. The blackberry is probably integral to this problem. So I'd like to know if there's anything I can do to make DNS Relay work properly, allowing his stupid Blackberry to work, while maintaining the integrity of the network.

my ping spikes to 1k+ all the time, making online games pretty much unplayable. Sometimes I'll lag up to 3k ms and by the time my ping is back to normal, the game is so behind it is messed up forever.I've looked online for days trying to find solutions, and trying all kinds of things. The problem started after i reinstalled windows xp (it actually started right after my power flickered after i reinstalled, but i think that may be coincidence. I'm not sure though.). I've reformatted since then, but the problem still persists.I think the problem might be WZC, but when I try stopping the program like other people have done, my wireless network disconnects pretty soon after. I've also tried just using the intel software, but that didn't work either. It was fine for a while last night after I changed to the intel software, but after maybe an hour or so it went back to lagging.I have Intel PROSet Wifi agn 5100 as my network card. I'm on a laptop. I also tried doing a ping test in command on my mom's laptop, and it never spiked like mine. Is my network card maybe just too old? I got the laptop almost 4 years ago.

I decided to change my old Belkin router to a Cisco one, and ever since i've got all sort of problems with internet connection.I'm a gamer, and my brother as well, and with the Belkin router we never got any issue, but now when we try to play together online we get serious Ping problems (We usually play at 80ms, but for a couple of seconds it reaches 800ms.. then it goes back to 80 ms).I have a 20 mb Conection with no P2P restriction, I'm using only Wireless-N connection, with only 20 Mhz and in Ch. 9 (2,452 Ghz).I also use a WPA2-Personal password and QoS System to give more priority to my PC and my games (DotA2 and WoW).This problem only happens when we try to play 2 games at the same time (e.g. DotA2 and WoW, or DotA and DotA, etc). Well i actually think Cisco might be better (Well, I payed extra money for "quality") but then again, with all those problems.

I have 2 computers hooked up to the router via wire and wife using wireless on her laptop.I'm playing games on internet and soon I noticed I got occasionally ping spikes.. The ping get beyond 1000 - 1500 so the screen is in fact temporary freezed. Sometimes those spikes can occur with 10-15 minutes inbetween them sometimes it can be an hour or more before I notice it.I'm running Windows 7 on both my computers. I first thought it was Microsoft was to throttle the packets so I did the change in the registry. But these spikes still happen. After some testings I also notice they happen at the same time on both computers so my conclusion is that it's something with the router.

recently I've noticed sharp spikes on both my wireless and wired network connections, It's safe to say it's not a network card problem as all PCs are experiencing this problem. I ran a tracert and these are the results:Tracing route to [URL] [209.123.109.175]over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 4 ms 3 ms 9 ms 192.168.1.1
2 242 ms 33 ms 29 ms 10gi6-0-0-100.bras1ldv.akl.vf.net.nz [203.109.12
9.41]
[code]...
Trace complete. As you can see there is packet loss and a huge spike in ping time.

i've got a Dell laptop and a few months ago i started experiencing higher ping on some games and some spikes on the internet, at first i blamed my isp but this has continues since then and my brother has reported no spikes or ping increases in the last weeks. I experience a 120 ping on speedtest.net (on average) to servers that i used to get up to 20 ping on and i experience 200 ping on league of legends servers that i used to get 100~ ping on.My laptop is running on windows 7, using panda antivirus and spybot search and destroy (i uninstalled mcafee).

We've had our internet provider and the same setup for about 5 months before this with no problems. I first noticed this in gaming. My ping will stick to around 40-50 in a server, but continually spike to 80-100. I don't notice it all that much, but on others' screens I'm choppy and look laggy.I'm connected to a router, but it seems to happen while directly connected as well. It has nothing to do with others on the network either. The modem is old, not sure if that has anything to do with it, a Motorola SB4200.

Since about 3 weeks ago my DSL has been getting totally random ping spikes, from under 40 to over 1500MS for minutes to hours on end. Nobody else is using my internet, I've verified this. There is nothing sucking up bandwidth on any connected device or computer, as far as I can tell through troubleshooting to the best of my ability. I tried switching to a Cisco X2000 modem/router combo and it did nothing, still totally random latency. Also, when I called AT&T about this, they didn't even know what ping was. They ran an upload/download speed test (which is still mostly consistent regardless of latency) and told me I was basically making the issue up.

It has always been the case with my laptop and another usb N adapter I bought a while back but this time when i upgraded my PC and got a DWA-552 adapter and the problem occurs again I was forced to try and debug it.PingPlotter had a constant ping check on my router's network address every second, every few minutes and sometimes seconds apart there would be 100+ ping spikes which always correlate with troublesome lag spikes in-game. And that's with Roaming Policy set to very low. Once set to normal it got much worse with 500+ ping spikes, and just to cement the correlation I set the policy to very high and 1000+ ping spikes happened.Could it be that DIR655 incorrectly reports to the adapter that it is about to drop the connection forcing a roam that results in nothing but a latency hiccup? I am not well versed in wireless mechanics. These ping spikes are often accompanied with packet loss.My DIR655 has several G cards connected to it (which work fine btw, my 552 seems to work fine in G mode too though I haven't tested it extensively yet - may be forced to since dir655 appears to be bugged with N mode) and several N cards that aren't used for gaming so this issue has never been a problem before.

Wireless network is fine - both my laptops get on without a problem. The Edimax PCI-E adapter:
a) can't connect, or
b) has limited connectivity, or
c) has full connectivity but no web pages work, and the router can't be pinged, or
d) works (for a short while)
The above options are seen pretty much evenly, except for the last one which achieves disproportionately low representation.Have attempted to uninstall/reinstall drivers. Have attempted to delete all profiles. Have seriously considered ripping out the PCI-E and throwing it into the next-door neighbours garden, but fear this may damage the motherboard.

We were hit by hurricane Sandy a couple weeks ago and lost power for a week and a half. Now that our cable has been restored I noticed that the wireless internet wasn't working. The wired internet works fine to this computer but no Wi-fi.I think the problem is the routers default gateway. It's supposed to be 192.168.1.1 but right now it's 24.191.112.1 .So far I have tried:
-Powercycling everything
-ipconfig/ flush DNS
-ipconfig/ release and ipconfig/renew
-Checking all the wires are pugged in fine (They are).

I am directly plugged into the router on my computer, and it is used wireless for the rest of the computers in the house. Frequently (3-4 times a day usually, sometimes more like every 20 mins, other days not at all), the router and Network Magic will tell me my computer has lost internet connection, and browsers and any program I try to start won't be able to connect to the internet. However, I know the connection is still live because any program that was running and accessing the internet beforehand (multi player games and instant messaging programs, for example) still run fine with their connection and I can continue to play or chat online until I close that program.
Trying the 'Repair Connection' on network magic doesn't work, but unplugging and replugging the power cable to the router fixes the issue(again, so I know it's the router and not the internet)whatever reason the router is deciding to tell me it's not active and refuse access to the internet for new programs when existing connections don't show any problems.

I just got an e4200 refurbed router, and it's been working great except for one problem I'm having. I have Comcast cable with Ubee D3.0 modem. For some reason, there will be a random 4-8 second delay when going to certain websites. While this normally wouldn't be a problem, it occurs quite frequently with Google.com and we definitely can't have that. I've updated to latest firmware. Ran ping test to find optimal MTU, went with 1500. To be sure it isn't a DNS issue, tried accessing Google by IP addy and getting the same delay. The delay seems to occasionally occur with Facebook as well, at one point I couldn't even get to Facebook and had to release/renew ipconfig. I have Mac address cloned if that makes a difference.

networking error which seems to make no sense to me, i have computer 1 (tower computer) computer 2 (laptop computer 3 (tower computer1 & 2 have networked happily together for 4-5 years, sharing files and printers both ways. 3 was connected and happily joined the network but only with 2. 1 can see files on both 2 & 3, have now disconnected 3, have reset and rebooted router and both computers are up to date with software patches, i can not work out why 2 (or 3 before it was disconnected) can see 1 on the workgroup but can not access 1 in any way. i can, however, copy a shortcut from 1 through metwork places into 2 and access those files from 2. but network wizard or manual setting can not get full sharing.

I have a WiFi in my home, when this laptop is under normal load, say like streaming a 360p youtube video, all the computers in my home will experience a huge lag and it becomes impossible to surf or do any internet activity (even the causing laptop itself will experience huge pings). The weird part is that the lag is at the LAN level, it is not related to my internet bandwidth. Because when I ping my local router (192.168.2.1) with other PCs during the lag period, I get 1000-4000 ms. However, it is usually 1 ms. I tried doing a stress test on one of my normal laptops by downloading at maximum speed, the problem did not occur, there was no lag, all my PCs did not encounter that lag and I still get 1 ms when pinging the router. It is only this laptop that when it starts downloading, my network will be flooded.
Another related problem with the laptop is that every time I log off then log in and try to reconnect to my network, It will not allow me, I will have to click on the windows diagnose problem and it will be fixed saying "Problem with wireless adapter or access point".

I've had a 2Wire gateway that I got from AT&T for about 5 years. Although I've seen terrible reviews for 2Wire, I've had pretty good luck with this one. Now the Power light is a steady red and only light on. Tech support says that it's most likely the power adapter. As I understand, most what are called modems or routers today are a combination of these two, is that right? I see them in stores ranging from $30 to $200 or more, and they all say they do the same thing - almost identical wording. If it turns out that my adapter is good, what should I be looking for?

I have a machine called 'survtest' on my lan with a permanent ip addr of 192.168.0.112. I can't ping that host by name from any other machine on the lan, although I can ping the ip address. Not only that but this machine appears in the DHCP client list within the router with its name 'survtest' and correct IP addr.
There is another machine on the lan called 'bsd' that also has a permanent IP addr of 192.168.0.110. It can be pinged by name from any other machine on the lan. However it does not show up in the DHCP client list at all.
Neither of these machines can be pinged by name from within the tplink admin diagnostic screen.

Both my DIR-655 and DIR-815, when setup as wireless access points, are unable to ping external IP addresses and thus cannot contact the dlink ntp servers. I've disabled UPnP, disabled DHCP, changed the LAN IP address to an available address on the network. The wireless works, devices are getting an IP from the network DHCP server and can surf the internet. But the DLink router itself cannot ping any external IP addresses. I have a D-Link wireless adapter (DWL-G122) that I have been trying to install on a Windows XP computer. After various uninstalls and reinstalls of the drivers and programs that come with it, I have found currently the best way to get it to work is leave the D-Link programs uninstalled and have Windows install the driver itself. The problem is, it doesn't seem to keep the drivers on restarting, so every time the computer is restarted, it must be installed again. This is not ideal. It occasionally worked when I installed from the CD, but the D-Link programs that would install with the drivers created problems of their own.

I have a D-Link DWL 520+ on my motherboard I can't get the wireless adapter to gain the IP address. I have tried to reboot and uninstall and reinstall, and repair. I have tried the hardware manager and several drivers from around the world (all being the same). Again the adapter can see the internet and connect with my router but it will not pickup the IP address. How do I get the wireless adapter to see the IP address?

I have a problem with my wireless connection. I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit OS and bought a new NETGEAR genie router WNR2200. I am experiencing lag spikes in 1-2 second duration while playing games. These lag spikes freeze the game and send my ping sky high (ping 999ms). While browsing the interwebz I don't really notice the lag spikes because they are only a few seconds long.Changes I have made (PC):
Disabled Client for Microsoft Networks
Disabled ANOD Network Security Filter driver
Disabled QoS Packet Scheduler
Disabled File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
[code]....
Mode: Up to 300MbpsAfter all these changes and tweaks I still get the exact same problem I started out with. The above changes were recommended by users of random forums to fix wireless lag spikes. Using a cat5 cable is not preferred (and perhaps not possible) as I am renting from random people and the router is on the other side of the house.
