Linksys WRT110 Unstable High Ping Wireless Connection
Feb 2, 2011
I have a Linksys WRT110 wireless router for my desktop via a D-link DWA-125 wireless adapter. The OS is Windows 7 64 bit and I mainly go online to play games. This has been a while and every time I play games, which requires stable connection, I will get this lag (the ping goes as high as 600ms for every few seconds then goes back to normal).I tried many ways to troubleshoot and find no solutions. I updated firmware for USB adapter, power cycling the router and reset the router many times.

I recently found that whilst using my WIRED connections, web pages have been opening slower at times. My ping times to google.com usually is around 72-84 ms which I continue to get if I hook up the cable modem directly to the PC. As soon as I utilize the Linksys router, I start getting higher ping times anywhere from 72-300 ms. Firmware version is 1.5.01 which I recently upgraded to. I tried resetting and so on. Is there an older firmware version that works better? I'm currently running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

I noticed some serious random ping spikes in online games and found that the connection between my Laptop and the E4200 is very very unstable. Sometimes it works perfectly fine but at other times my ping will spike each 5 seconds to three or even four digits and back to normal. I never get disconnected but playing is obviously not possible.
I ran several pingtests through pingtest.net and got everything from 15ms ping 3ms jitter to like 400 ping 300 jitter.
Eventually, I pinged the router (192.168.1.1) and got delays between 2ms and 300ms for both the 2.4 ghz and the 5ghz network. The 2.4ghz channels are fairly crowded but the signal is perfectly fine and stable. The 5ghz band is totally free therefore interference shouldn't be a problem i guess.

I bought the WMP600N because Linksys and Microsoft listed it as 'compatible' for Windows 7 x64. My experience:
- unstable and weak connection
- pings to websites like google.com drops, average: 1 out of 3
- low signal, on the same spot my three years old HP-laptop with 'a build in wireless card' has full signal strength in Windows 7
- it works well under Windows XP (32 bit)
I am convinced that drivers for the WMP600N are not ready for Window 7 x64. Linksys (or Ralink, which developed the chipset), release a proper driver for the WMP600N.

I have had my EA2700 for about 6 months now. Have had no problems until about a month ago. One night I could not get the router to connect to the internet. First thoughts were that the cable connection had gone down. When I finally started to trouble shoot I was able to confirm the cable connection is fine by connecting to the modem directly.
Out of the modem I am getting 14+ Mbps. (I only Pay for 10 So a plus there)
I could not get the router to connect to the internet. I ended up resetting the router and reconfiguring it. Ever since then I have been getting really unstable connection to the internet.
When I connect directly to the modem (cabled) I am getting a nice steady connection . When I add the router and hardware in I get a good connection only a Mbps or 2 drop off and a pretty steady connection. Then when I connect over WIFI I get a much larger drop off depending on if the device is a 2.4 or a 5
The connection is extremely unstable. The curve on the graph {URL} is very peaky and has extreme highs and lows. This is multiplied when running on the GHz (as my laptop runs on). My Iphone running on GHz. I can pull down 9 Mbps but the curve is still up and down. Iphone on GHz I barely get Mbps and it is extremely choppy on the graph.
I am able to back this up with my I PAD. I can only confirm the 2.4 number with the laptop as it does not have GHz radio in it. So every thing that us running on the 2.4 is getting poor connections.
I also suspect that the through put on the wired side is poor as well. I am unable to prove it as every test I run shows a good connection but netflix has been locking up and I have to restart what ever I am watching 2 to even 10 times a show. I need to do more testing to be sure the network or the devices are to blame.

Just installed a refurb EA4500 this past weekend after testing it for a week. The regular wireless network is very stable, but not much faster than my single-band DLink DIR655. Guest network seems to drop out from two connected iPhones, and when the connection drops, you have to re-login and type in the guest password everytime. The linksys firmware is up-to-date( Linksys smart wifi)and so are the iOS on the 2 iPhones. Just to add, on my old DLink, the guest network comes up secured also, so when you type in the passcode, it remembers it next it comes in range unlike the Cisco, which requires login at a web interface.

Set up: Router: WRT110 1 computer connected via ethernet cable 1 computer using a wireless nic card from cisco
The problem is thus: if the first computer is actively using the internet (even activities as mundane as browsing one's email) the computer connected wirelessly will lose its connection to the internet yet maintain its connection to the router. Both can be actively using the internet, but the wireless will seemingly at random drop internet access (usually in 30-120 minute intervals).
The computer connected via the ethernet cable was unplugged for a week and during that time the wirelessly connected computer was used extensively and did not lose connection once.
I don't understand how to even frame this problem in a concise manner, much less seek information as to how to resolve it. It's seemingly giving all priority to the computer connected via ethernet but I that's just intution speaking.

Using WRT110 router, running XP, SP3 on both laptops, one a Dell and one an old Toshiba. Never any problem with the Dell (and Gateway before that), nor the iPad, Acer notebook, etc. However, the Toshiba keeps losing the connection to Internet (even though the icon says the connection is excellent). DH has to continually Repair in order to connect. I even reformatted the Toshiba, thinking it was something in the Registry. Now that it is back up and running (and all programs updated), it STILL periodically has to be repaired in order to connect.

I have a WRT110 and a Vizio smart TV - just changed internet providers to NuLink to get a Mbps line - previously had AT&T DSL 1.5 - when tech power cycled router every laptop and smartphone in the house connected with no issue - TV did not connect (it was on during time tech was doing install) - attempted to connect with password, failed to connect multiple times - sometimes message 'DCHP connection not available' message was displayed - called Vizio, 1 hour and 9 minutes of troubleshooting with no success, according to Vizio tech all settings on TV good recommended I contact Lynksys and ask them to ' check 2 ports - port 80 and port 446' - also advise 'connection is autopopulating to 101' - I believe he was referring to the IP address request - router set to WPA2 personal - note that when I first got TV 3 months ago I was able to connect to router no problem, but I do not know if TV had connection the day we switched internet providers. I do have 2 fixed IP addresses entered an one of them ends in '101' - I do not know if that is significant or not. The main reason for the internet switch was to get the TV online, disappointed that I could not get it done.

I purchased a WRT110 router about a 18 months ago. I am currently experiencing an issue where the wireless connection to the router will become randomly erratic. My internet connection will slow down or drop entirely. Sometimes my laptop will disconnect from the router entirely. I don't think it's the wireless card in my laptop since I have seen the issue on my desktop using a wireless N USB adapter, my Nintendo Wii, and my wife's Macbook, all within the last week.
I am positive it is the router. I set up a coninuous ping command to the router accross my laptop's wireless using "ping -t 192.168.2.1" in a command prompt. Most of the time, the round trip is 1 to 3 ms or <1 ms. When I am experiencing the connection issues, the ping time will rise significantly, sometimes going as high as 2000 - 3000 ms. About 25% of time, the ping will just time out. When this starts happening, the only way I have been able to restore proper connectivity is to manually reboot the router. The issue eventually re-appears. Sometimes in a few days, sometimes in as little as five minutes. I've gone so far as to restore the router to factory defaults and reconfigure it, but that has not made a difference.

I decided to change my old Belkin router to a Cisco one, and ever since i've got all sort of problems with internet connection.I'm a gamer, and my brother as well, and with the Belkin router we never got any issue, but now when we try to play together online we get serious Ping problems (We usually play at 80ms, but for a couple of seconds it reaches 800ms.. then it goes back to 80 ms).I have a 20 mb Conection with no P2P restriction, I'm using only Wireless-N connection, with only 20 Mhz and in Ch. 9 (2,452 Ghz).I also use a WPA2-Personal password and QoS System to give more priority to my PC and my games (DotA2 and WoW).This problem only happens when we try to play 2 games at the same time (e.g. DotA2 and WoW, or DotA and DotA, etc). Well i actually think Cisco might be better (Well, I payed extra money for "quality") but then again, with all those problems.

Since buying and using this router about 1 month ago, I've had latency problems. With my Linksys WRT54GL, my latency has always been consistent. However, pinging to google (as a benchmark), my ping is a good 50-70 higher than directly plugging into my router. Directly into my modem I get 10-20ms pings; through the router, I get minimum 60ms up to 100ms spikes. When using the Linksys router, my ping would be 20-30s. I really hope it's just a settings problem. I've turned off QoS and wireless to isolate the connection to just wired, but it still persists. I really hope I can fix this problem, else I am going to buy a different router over the weekend. I can't play FPS games like Bad Company 2 with such high latency.

I purchased the AE3000 Wireless Adapter for my PC, and has been working fine until now. When I first start my PC, my ping starts anywhere between 20-80, then after I try to access anything on the internet it shoots up between 600-1200. It just started happening about 3 days ago, but now it has gotten worse. I can't play any online games, and websites are slow to load.

I bought new Lenovo IdeaCentre H430 pc and I'm having problem with high pings. Windows 7 with on-board realtek NIC. Fresh install, fully updated, drivers installed from included CD. When I start pinging router (direct 1Gb ethernet connection, 1 hop), pings start at <1ms (which is fine) and after a while they jump to 300-1000ms.
I loaded up live ubuntu to test if the problem might be in HW. It's not, in ubuntu pings were always <1ms.I also noticed that when I start using connection somehow, pings go down to 1ms, but go back up when I stop using it (tested by accessing live camera feed on LAN).
Power Options set to max performance. I disabled Interrupt Moderation on the NIC, didn't work.I tested it in the safe mode with networking, same problem there.
It slows down our client-server based programs, what's causing it. All I could google up was that disabling Interrupt Moderation would work, it didn't though.Computer is giving high pings to router when idle and normal pings when network is under load, it slows down our software significantly.

I don't know if this because buggy firmware (i updated to V1.00.16) or there something wrong with the device but if i set radio band to AUTO which enable wide-channel, my wireless connection become unstable when i ping to the modem, i got 200ms - timeout randomly
my family notebook that on other side of room connection also become more worst , ping to the modem (192.168.1.1) timeout so often
the connections seems better if i set radio band to standard - 20Mhz channel even though it seems WAG54G2 have more stable wireless connection (i replace it because the ethernet port dead) i also tried to change the channel, but the issue still persist, it seems the default is the most stable (channel 9 for wide, 11 for standard)
should i RMA the product as i just purchase last week? or it just because the bad firmware ?

I recently moved back home with my desktop that use to be plugged in via ethernet. I bought a PCI Wireless card and I have been having problems connecting to and staying connected with the network. Once I am connected the connection speed is very slow. I have tried reinstalling windows and my card several times, even going to the store to swap it out. I have a feeling that one simple setting is changed, but I can't figure out what it is. I am currently on a laptop that is also running windows 7, but has none of the problems of the desktop. I tried to run the Netalyzer program on the desktop, however, the network disconnected as soon as I tried. Here is the link to the results from my laptop that is connected to the network: ICSI Netalyzr — Results

So my issue has been going on for a while now a while after I replaced the router from a DIR-535(If I recall) to a DIR-635. Now the problem resides in my computer however as it would seem that I randomly tend to loose internet acces and it only applies to my computer in the form of obviously loss of internet and the horrid warning triangel in the corner. I've tried removing and restarting the connection without any succes, I also tried to do a ipconfig /release /flushdns and /renew but it didnt seem to do anything either, basically been throwing attempts at a wall to see what works.
As far as the actual card goes it's a Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter.

I recently moved from an old apartment in Downtown Montreal, to a suburb area, but still close to where I was before (10 km). I am using the same ISP provider, Videotron. The same speed. I was playing this game, Chivalry Medieval warfare, perfectly fine before, but now something is really wrong. Whenever I join a server, my ping skyrockets up to close to 200, sometimes drifting to 130 but never going below... and often rising back up again.Keep in mind that I filter servers by their pings. I only join servers that display a low ping (although often I won't see any, when I refresh.. there they are). I'll see a server with 30 ping, join it, and be at 200.It's entirely unplayable. Not only is it impossible to properly time parries anymore, but I also get a lot of rubberbanding. I've tested the internet here, and the speeds are accurate. 10 mbps down, 1 mbps up. I am connected to a Linksys E1200 router. I've tried everything I can possibly think of.I went into the router setup, disabled the firewall, added myself to a DMZ, tried to forward every port... rebooted the modem, my computer, the router, tried a different Ethernet cable.. nothing is working. It's very depressing. Nothing has changed on my own computer in the move. I also notice there is a delay of a second or so before I start to load a webpage when I click a link.

My wireless connection says i have full bars of signal. When I do a speed test, i get 500-600 kb/s download. Which is what I used to get. However, after I re-installed my wireless adapter's card, the wna3100 netgear, it became extremely slow.
Pages would load slow, I could no longer play League of Legends properly because the ping is too high. Also, I used to have crossfire graphics cards running and the internet was fine, but after reinstallation, I thought I'd turn it off because that's how I fixed it before. But now, even with just one graphics card running, the internet is extremely slow.

I have upgraded to the latest firmware which solved lots of problems regarding unstable wifi connection as well as BitTorrent / P2P transfers. But I also observed that when my BT is on (Transmission for Mac) at around 50KB/s upload and download, my network latency hikes up from some 30ms to 500ms which affects a lot on web browsing or other apps requiring Internet. My BitTorrent app is showing I am merely making some 20 peers connection so I am not convinced that is an ISP problem but it's more about the router.

I recently got a Netgear WNDR3400 Dual Band Wireless Router. When I first installing it everything seemed to run great, download was about 1.5 Mbps and a good ping, 20-70 for gaming. This lasted about a day. While the download does vary due to the service provider, my ping however has suddenly increased to a constant 200-400. This is happening on my Laptop, X-Box 360, and PS3.I have tested both wired and wireless connections from the router and used both the 2.64Ghz and 5Ghz frequency and I still have the same issue. I have then done a wired connection straight into the modem and my ping returns to the 20-70. My Router is less than 3 ft from all systems. I live in a barracks so there are multiple wireless signals floating about. However no one else seems to have any issues with there ping when using a wireless router and there only 1 room above me. I have changed channels on both frequency's, enabled and disabled NAT Filtering, decreased and increased the MTU size within the WAN settings, reset the router to factory defaults, ensured I have the proper firmware, and proper software for my laptop.

I recently replaced my old WRT54G router with a E3200 router.
Unfortunately, ever since my wireless network is a lot more unstable than before. I very often experience serious lag spikes and drops in speed. Very often I experience serious lag for a couple of seconds after which everything returns to normal. I notice this the most in online gaming, but it is also noticeable while browsing the web. When downloading large files (e.g. steam games), the download speed also seems to suffer from this by dropping every now and then.
There are no connection drops however. And it only seems to affect the wireless network.
I have configured the E3200 router manually using the Web UI and is has been configured exactly the same as my WRT54G: i.e. only 2.4GHz band enabled with b/g/n, WPA2 security, MAC filtering on, no throtling/parental control/port forwarding, UPnP disabled. The E3200 is in the exact same place as the the WRT54G was.
Things I have done so far for troubleshooting: I used inSSIDer to monitor the wireless network and it's signal strength seems about the same as the WRT54G. I changed channels for best signal strength (there is only one other wifi network that seems to be configured as a dual channel N network; 3 other networks with very low signal strength) and have tried every channel.
I updated the fimware to the latest version (Ver.1.0.04 (Build 1)) and did a factory reset and power cycle afterwards.
I noticed that switching channels can account for 5-10Mbps differences in internet speed. Something I never noticed with the WRT54G. The lag spikes occur more often on some channels than on others. This seems not related to the speeds I get on the channel.
I really can't imagine that a router marketed as High Peformance router with superior speed and superior range is less stable than my old WRT54G router.
Is there something I can do to improve stability of this router?

Tried reset button a number of times, makes no difference. When logged in to the router and looking at the Status screen, it shows no IP address, no Subnet Mask, no Default Gateway, no DNS, thus I can't get on the Internet. Connection type is Auto Config - DCHP. It does show the correct domain name as other wireless routers show.

I have an NTFS formatted USB disk drive (Western Digital My Passport Essential Black 320 GB WDBAAA3200ABK) attached to the WRT160NL wireless router (Firmware Version 1.0.02), and I have video, picture and music files on the USB disk drive in three folders: Videos, Music, Pictures. Auto-scan is disabled, I scan the media files manually by clicking on the 'Scan All' button.
PROBLEM 1 The worst problem is that the router is very sensitive to files that can't be recognized by the router as media files. For example if there are subtitle files (*.str) between the media files, then strange and nondeterministic things happen: some valid media files are skipped and not included in the media database; some files included but the file names are mixed. The most irritating in the bug is that there is no log file, where you could find the problem, and so you never know which file cause the problem, and you have to browse through all the files hunting for the cause.
PROBLEM 2 When the router is in the process of scanning the media files, then the internet (WAN) connection often can't be used, although the router can be accessed and the status says it is connected to the internet.

i have a little annoying problem with my E4200. V1 with the latest 04 fw. It seems, that after many hours of downloading at full speed (only one torrent at a time) the speed goes down, and up again, and becoming unstable. My max download speed is 1.5 Mb/s, and it can drop from that, to 50 kb/s, and then up again. and i have no internet access when that happens, but it only last 10-20 seconds and then its back again. Sometimes i get that yellow warning sign on the taskbar which says "No Internet Access" but not always.
Seems like its happening after many hours of downloading at full speed. im on the latest firmware, have tried different channels, 20 Mhz only on Channel Width, different names on the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels.. i use the 2.4Ghz channel btw. Otherwise its stable, and i have had no problems while gaming online.
