Linksys Wireless Adapters :: AE1000 - Unable To Install Windows 7 32-bit
Oct 12, 2010
I purchased the AE1000 wireless adapter for use with my Linksys WRT54G router. I first tried to install by loading the CD, which went so far as the "Insert your adapter into a USB port" screen. The Windows "processing" circle spun for about twenty minutes, then I was prompted to "insert the wireless adapter" once more. Rinse, repeat. I absolutely cannot get past this step. I scoured the web for an answer and turned up little. I uninstalled my antivirus and firewall software, made certain that files associated with my prior adapter were removed, tried varying USB ports (all 2.0) on my desktop, and had no success. Today, I exchanged the adapter for a replacement, and I'm encountering all of the same difficulties.

I have tried installing this device on Windows 7 64bit machine. The install seems to go fine and the device works at 2.4G.
But I purchased this unit to be able to test a clients 5GHz system. There does not seem to be any place to switch from 2.4G to 5.0G.

I had a hard drive failure recently and replaced my HDD with an identical HDD (WD 500 AAKS) and did a restore from my WD Passport Essential. Everything works as before except I can't install my AE1000 wireless adapter. The OS recognizes the new hardware and I attempt instalation form the setup CD. Istallation goes until it gets to the "Installing" step and then it just stays there forever until it comes back with an error. I am accessing the internet now through a cat 5 ethernet hook-up.

I have an E1000 router and have updated the firmware to v2.1.02 Build 6. Also have the AE1000 Wireless-N Adapter and wanted to see if there were any new updates. According to this Linksys page the latest driver is Ver.3.1.12.0 (04/27/2012). I have downloaded the file and unzipped it to the desktop.
I am running Win 7 64-Bit so I opened this folder: C:UsersJOHNDesktopAE1000_Win7_3.1.12.0-WHQLWin7_64_v3.1.12.0
Which file will actually install the new driver:
netr28ux Security Catalog 9 kb; netr28ux Setup Info 11 kb; netr28ux.sys System File 1,563 kb; RaCoInst.dat DAT File 14 kb; RaCoInstx.dll Application Extension 320 kb

Trying to install the Linksys AE1000 wireless adapter on Windows 7 x64. So I follow the instructions. insert CD. Insert adapter. The i get this error:
"Linksys Wireless-N Router requires that wireless connections are to be managed by the Microsoft Windows Wireless Connection Manager. Some laptops and computers are pre-loaded with a different wireless connection manager which prevents your Valet or Linksys Wireless-N Router installation from loading. If this is the case, then you will need to disable or turn OFF the other wireless connection manager, and enable the Microsoft Windows Wireless Connection Manager instead."
What manager? This is windows 7, I'm not using any third party wireless utility so I don't understand why I'm getting this particular error. If windows wireless connection manager is off, how do I enable it?I've always managed my network setting through the Network and sharing center,I've tried:
(1) sweeping registry files before install(2) Plugging in AE1000 first and manually installing drivers
When I did this, the device shows up successfully in device manager and the driver installs smoothly, however when I go to network adapters, the AE1000 is listed as disabled. I tried enabling it but to no avail. Running the network diagnostics claims the driver doesn't work despite the fact that it installed successfully.
After several restarts and disabling/re-installations I recieve the same error. The end goal is to connect the AE1000 to a Cisco E3000 router.

Whenever I try to install the drivers for the adapter normally, Windows 7x64 gives me a message that the device name "Compact Wireless-G USB Network Adapter" already exists and is in use, preventing me from installing the wireless driver properly. In order to get around it, I changed all "Compact Wireless-G USB Network Adapter" fields into "Compact Wireless-G USB Network Adapter B" in the netr28ux.inf file to make the driver install under a different name.I tried everything I can to remove all evidence of linksys drivers from my computer, uninstalling and removing driverstore with pnputil.exe, but I cannot seem to find the originating files to uninstall. For now the way I edited the netr28ux.inf file works, but I'd rather be able to install the driver as intended.

I am running Windows 7 with the WUSB600N (v.2). Here is how I got it to work. The driver support is not a .exe. You will have to install it yourself...but it's not a big deal.Download the Windows 7 driver for your OS version from the Linksys Support page.Save it to the desktop and then unzip it to the desktop so you can find it easier.Once unzipped you will see 3 folders: Mac, Win7 32 and Win7 64. Choose accordingly. What I did was install it through the "Device Manager". (Right click "My Computer", choose "Manage", then Device Manager",or use the "Search Bar under the Start Menu...whatever. Once you are in the Device Manager...
1. Make sure your WUSB600N is inserted in your computer.
2. Navigate down to "Network Adapters" If you see your WUSB600N adapter...great! Your halfway home!
3. Right click on the "Linksys WUSB600N Adapter.
4. Choose the option to " Update Driver Software"
5. Choose "Browse My Computer for Software"
6. Navigate to the desktop and choose the folder that contains the name of your Windows 7 platform.
7. It should update but, HOLD ON! We are not done yet!!!
In order for it to start transmitting in that shiny new 5GHZ band, you must go into "Network and Sharing Center". Once there, look on the left hand side of the main window and you will see "Change adapter settings"Go there. You should see here that your existing adapter is still working (enabled) and your new Linksys WUSB600N has a big fat red "X" under it (disabled).Right click on your existing adapter and choose, "DISABLE".Then, right click on the WUSB600N adapter and choose "ENABLE".The last thing you should have to do is choose the network you want to connect to (for me it was the 5GHZ one) ..and Viola!!

I get the following error when running the setup executable downloaded from this site:
Error description: Adapter can't be Found
Model name: AE1200/AE2500
Operating system: Windows 7 SP 1
Software version: 2.1.0.6
Motherboard is an asus p7p55
I have tried all 8 usb ports on the back of my computer and the 2 case ports. Non of them detect the adapter when running the setup executable. I have no other usb devices connected. Windows 7 was installed on this machine at the begining of this month. I have attempted to install the AE2500 on another windows 7 pc and it installed with no problems. I suspect the problem is the motherboard.

I'm trying to install a WMP54G PCI Version 4.1 in my Windows 2000 Pro SP4 computer. I ran the setup cd before installing the card, then took out the disk. After installing the card and powering the computer, the Available Wireless Network screen didn't appear. I also didn't get the Network Monitor icon on the taskbar. Network Monitor appears in the start menu, but can't be started. Device Manager says the card is working properly and there are no conflicts.
I uninstalled the software, removed the card, and repeated the installation process with the same end result. The card light blinks like it is receiving data. I'm using a Linksys WRT54G2 router. Both my desktop (W7) and my laptop (Vista) connect just fine. How can I get my W2K computer on the network?

I'm running Windows 7-64 bit. The AE1000 works great so far, in the one day I've had it, and it appears to start itself and connect when turning the computer on (unlike other people on here that I've seen). BUT, it's all pointless if I can't put my computer into standby. The adapter kicks it right back out as soon as I try to sleep the computer.
I've checked the device settings and "allow the device to wake the computer" is unchecked (in fact, it's grayed out). I rarely turn off the computer; I much prefer to just put it in standby. I don't want to have to unplug the adapter every time I do that.

Bought the AE1000. Hooked it up to my desktop computer (Sony VAIO), and it immediately recognized my wireless network in my house. However, when trying to log on, it asks for the network key, which I correctly enter and it attempts to log on, but fails to connect! I have called Linksys, and they claim it is my ISP's fault. I called Comcast (My ISP) and they claim it is a faulty product.

I have a Cisco Linksys WRT120N wireless router in one bedroom. On another bedroom which is hardly 15 feet away, I have set up my laptop to connect to it via a Cisco Linksys AE1000 wireless USB adapter. There are two thick walls between one bedroom and another.
Neverthess I find AE1000 dropping connection all the time. There are times I unplug the laptop and take into the same room as my router but it still doesn't connect. The wireless strength constantly varies from Very Good to Excellent but no matter what I try AE1000 never connects to it. If I restart my laptop, sometimes it does connect.
All in all its very frustrating that two Cisco products can't communicate effectively with each other.
P.S: I have both my ASUS tablet and my verizon droid both connecting to the wireless router from the same room as my laptop without any issues.

I've been using my AE1000 for about a month now with absolutely no problems. Yesterday it just stopped working, I removed it from the USB port and just about burned my fingers on the metal part that plugs into the USB port. BTW I am on Windows 7 64-bit.
Now it won't work. I've tried reinstalling the driver and the device just blinks in the "Devices and Printers" control panel. I removed it again and it was very hot to the touch after only being in the port for about a minute.

I recently purchased two of these units. One used with a quad core AMD rig and another with a single core AMD rig. Both systems are running Windows 7 but the older single core system is having issues. I noticed that I keep hearing the sound of a USB device being disconnected but wasnt sure what it was until I noticed when I try to copy large files over wireless the AE1000 disconnects from my system like I've unplugged it. I've swapped the two units and it didn't solve the problem. My newer quad core doesn't experience the issue at all. I've also tried different USB ports but that doesn't solve the issue either.

My computer is a desktop in a differet part of the house, away from the main computer. My computer is hooked up with an AE1000 Wireless USB. This USB is wirelessly connected to a Netgear Extender (Repeater) for a better signal strength. This Repeater is wirelessly connected to the router on the other side of the house, plugged into the main computer.
So my problem is, when im working on my computer or gaming on my free time, it randomly disconnects. My signal has a (!) inside of a triangle at the bottom right of my screen. I run the automatic troubleshoot on my Win 7, and it says either "DNS server not responding" or "Your computer is working properly, but some of your devices are not responding". Other times it works just fine and i run troubleshoot alot and it doesnt find a problem. Some days its running at 144 Mbps others 6.5...
I have checked that all of the devices are uptodate. .I've contacted GeekSquad and they said there was no problem. But obviously for them to connect to my computer the wireless has to be working, so they didnt find anything because it worked for the time being.I'm just woundering are there any capability issues with my wireless? Or any other problems im not aware of?

Ive been reading the forums up and down about this device and i notice other threads with users having the "Exact" problem im having. Only problem is im noticing a simaalar theme to ech of those threads. The issue doesnt have a resolution.
With that said i figured i would give this a try regaurdless. The problem i have is very simple.
Windows 7 Yltimate 64 bit.
Motherboard: ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO
Proc: Phenom x6
Ram: 8 Gb
Ive tried all USB ports (2.0) on the computer and they all exibit the same said behavior. This being that when you turn the computer off, restart it, or put it to sleep...the AE1000 will not power on and has to be unseated from the USB port and then reseated before the device is seen by the system and then and only then does it fire up, connect and work perfectly.
The drivers i have used have been the ones off the CD, Then i removed those and downloaded the ones from the website. These drivers have been installed after removing the entry from device manager manually after attempts to use the normal method resulted in the same behavior.
Also i have installed this device on my Dell E6400, Dell D620 Running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit and 64 bit and they also exibit the same exact behavoir.

I 'm very happy with the AE1000 & got it to work with my A31p by using a USB 2.0 adapter; (it only has USB 1.0) I think the ThinkPad PCMCIA card is faulty because it only works for a brief time & then dies (works fine with current machines)--then I noticed that the newest driver supports USB 1.0 but exactly how is that file implemented? I don't see .exe files, etc, & want to try to use the new driver--I'm using the latest XP--is there a step-by-step tutorial describing how to use the new driver?

After a lot of googling and scavenging of specifications, I've yet to fully understand what is the difference between the AE1000 and the WUSB600N. I need a good wireless adapter to pair with my E3000, so I'd just like to know what the difference is (if there is one) and which one I should go for.
