I have a simple question; Does the E4200 have a print server built into it? I have a usb printer that I want to attach to the router so multiple computers can print to it. The printer does not have ethernet or wireless. I will be upgrading the printer later but would like for it to work with all my computers at the moment.
View 9 RepliesI have an HP LJ4050 plugged right into one of the open LAN ports on my E4200 with a CAT6 cable. Can this router work as a LAN print server? I can't pull up the IP on a browser window or ping it successfully.The 4050 doesn't have USB capability and I don't want to use the parallel port on my PC unless I have to.If possible, I'd like to have wireless computers on the network be able to print to it as well.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an HP laser printer (network printer) plugged into one of the ethernet ports of the E4200. I am able to print and communicate with the printer (via the built-in web interface) for the first few hours after the printer is powered on. After a day or so, however, (when the printer has gone into sleep/power-save mode) I can no longer print or attach to it - it is seen as being offline. The only way around this is to power the printer off and on again.I never had this problem with the E3000 or the (non-Cisco) router before that. I do not see any settings that would cause this to happen.

I've tried several workarounds, learning things in the processs, but to no avail.I've set up a VPN connection with Windows 7. The RRAS server is at home and I'm attempting to access from school (or the internet anywhere).I have no problem establishing the VPN connection (that I can see). Port 1723 is forwarded for both UDP and TCP to a static LAN address (198.162.1.124) in the E4200. PPTP pass-through is enabled (as well as the other two options).I can't see anything on the server after connecting. I'm using a DDNS. It works just fine INSIDE the LAN; I've even mapped a network drive to "S:". Accessing ANYTHING outside of the LAN over a VPN, however, isn't working. [code]

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a WD USB with approx 70,000 songs on it. When I try and scan the Music, it gets approx halfway though the songs, then the Media Servers stops all communications.
The only way I can get the Media Server to recover is to power cycle the E4200
The e4200 1.0.03 DHCP server appears to be quite buggy. After configuring a static IP / reservation for a client which already had a dynamic IP from the pool, the e4200 continued to offer this client its pool IP. However, the DHCP client listing in the e4200 showed the client having the static IP even though it was still being offered that pool address.This may sound like user error, but I can assure you, it is not. I have had a very frustrating experience with this product, and rather than fool with tech support again, I ran `tcpdump -e -s1600 -n -vvvv -i eth0 port bootpc or port bootps` to absolutely rule out a mistake on my part, bug in the DHCP client, etc. I found that the client was always offered that old IP, even thought the e4200 status display showed the "new" static one, after doing a DHCPDISCOVER without requesting a specific IP. This condition persists across e4200 reboots even after having the client release its lease!I finally was able to resolve this by forcing the client to request the static IP from the e4200.This is unquestionably a bug in the DHCP server, and additionally, the user interface does not show the real state of the underlying DHCP leases held by clients which have static addresses / reservations. Troubleshooting this condition is well beyond the abilities of the average user.

I had to replace it with this new E4200 but don't see an option for it to act as a time source for my internal network.
Can this router be used for this function?

I have the unit set up to provide two dns servers to the clients, but the 4200 always provides itself as a third and it uses my cable providers dns servers. I am using a dns based filtering service to prevent certain material from being accessed within my network as the first two resolvers. So long as both or one of the provided servers is working it doesn't fall back to the unfiltered third, but I would prefer to remove it entirely.

When attempting to set up Remote Web Access, WHS continues to recoginze my E4200 model information and router IP address but delivers the message 'Remote Web Access to Your Server is Blocked'. Cisco and MS say the router is compatible with WHS and that it should set up through the wizard but no luck following many attempts, including manual set up of DHCP Reservation and Single Port Forwarding on ports 80/443 (not sure I did this correctly).
I've taken the router back to default settings with the exception of enabling Remote Management under the Remote Management Access section of the Administration menu tab; tried again with the same result. What settings to change to make this work?
I just bought a Linksys E4200v2 router and updated the firmware to 2.0.26.124551. The DHCP server is turned on however, it won't issue any IP addresses. I have to set IP reservations for all of my devices in order for the router to give them an IP address. This includes my printer, xbox360 and 2 computers. I'm also having this problem with the wired and wireless lan.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just bought an e4200. I was using a LinkSys WRT54GS running DD-WRT alternative firmware.
One feature that I really liked in DD-WRT was the ability to assign static IP leases from the DHCP server. I liked having all of my devices running with a predictable, known IP address on my network. I have a Home Theater PC, and various controller applications that run on iPhones, etc. - some pretty homebrewed. Configuring the firewalls, etc. was much easier with IP address based controls.
Is there a way to achieve the same within the e4200's stock firmware?
i've not seen anything that sugests this (also my E4200 is on order, pending delivery, so unable to look into it more), but is it possible to have a remote library with the E4200 media server? i currently have a server with alot of content on it, but it does not support uPnP/DLNA. would i be able to use the E4200 to connect to the server and access it via the E4200's media server?

The media server works fine but after a while i loose contact with the router and the server this means that the Cisco connect doesn't work, the 192.168.1.1 doesn't work and I can't find the disk via \. I do have internet connection via wifi as im using it now....why I loose connection to the router? The lease time is 24h and it can happen more than once in a day.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a 1TB drive attached to my E4200 that contains several videos sorted in a folder hierarchy, like this (these are just examples):

Supernatural
01. Episode 1.mp4

As you can see, all of my videos are in a carefully constructed heirarchy. This works with my old media server (Rivet for Mac). On the E4200, however, all of these MP4 files are merged together. My Xbox shows folders like "Albums" and "By Date", but these don't really mean anything -- all of my videos are jumbled into these folders and there's no way I can find anything.
Here's how the media server is configured:
If I can't find a solution, than the media server feature of this router is absolutely useless to me.
On my new E4200v2, after I tried to move beyond the disappointment of Cisco removing Internet Access Policy entirely, I decided to give the stripped down Parental Controls a try.
Sadly, I didn't have any luck doing what I needed to do... block my Tivo's from accessing Youtube.
I enabled Parental Controls, Added the Target Devices (my Tivo's did show up), and added "Youtube.com" as blocked site #1. Saved. Entered the parental password when prompted. Even rebooted the router.
But Youtube wasn't blocked. So I added to the target list a non-Tivo device (a Macbook) for a reality check, and rebooted the router again... still no luck. Youtube still not blocked.
So then I started to wonder if their Parental Control depends somehow on the local DHCP server & Client list. Because my E4200 has DHCP Server = OFF (I have always used a Windows Server for DHCP).
I tried to call Linksys support to get this working, but after 45 mins, including escalation to senior engineer, they really were pretty useless (no real familiariarity with my problem) then they disconnected my call!
I'm using .01 firware and I notice that after I reboot the router I get duplicate filenames on the HD attached to it with the video files. What folder or config file can I delete so it will do a clean rescan? please fix the E4200 media server in .02 firmware
View 9 Replies View RelatedI decided to play around a little more with the media server feature... I've succeeded in getting SOMETHING consistent out of the 1.0.02 firmware. It's not 100% useful.
Here's what I did - whether it's pertinent, who knows:
1) I made the Media Server "Name" completely unique. My router's name was "Penguin" and that seemed to proliferate throughout the settings on the router everywhere (SMB server name, FTP, Media Server, etc.). I decided to just call the media server "Server." I then checked the option to DISABLE the server, and saved settings.
2) With the Media Server OFF, browse to the share on the USB drive, and completely delete the T wonky folder.
3) On the Media Server page of the router config, add your media sources.
4) Enable the Media Server, save, and you'll then see the T wonky folder come back, and if you go into that folder, you'll see some files being "built."
I tested a few videos and some music with the XBMC media player on my Mac book and a Windows 7 PC. I was able to add music and video sources on my small selection of test music and videos. I was also able to play them. MP3 tags and embedded artwork showed up properly, and the streaming over wireless was very good.
Now... Here's the kicker. This was just a VERY small sample of my entire collection. I had about 5 albums in MP3 format on the drive, and about 10 movies that I personally converted to MP4 with Handbrake (ripped each movie to about 1.4gb). When I threw my entire 90gb music collection on the drive and told it to scan (it, being the router Media Server page), it seemed to populate the albums up to a certain point, and then crashed. I saw the data files in the T wonky folder getting larger for about 5 minutes, then it stopped growing. At that same time, XBMC wasn't able to see any music or videos. Even after turning off the media server, then re-enabling it, I wasn't able to see anything. If I deleted the T wonky folder, and went back to a smaller subset of my collection, it once again worked "reliably."
So, one of several things is happening here.
1) There are certain files the media server cannot properly parse, and it's crashing the services that run it.
2) Something is corrupting the media database files which then prevents it from showing up.
3) There's a maximum number of files or file size that your collection can be.
If only there was a syslog we could get to on the stock firmware... Linksys.
