Linksys Wireless Router :: How To Know If WRT54G Connection Is Secure
Jul 8, 2011
My friend walked in with his laptop and connected easily.Yet is said it was not a "secure" connection. How will I know if MY computer has a secure connection?
I recently had an issue with my laptop that required a complete reinstall of windows. As if this wasn't bad enough, I lost the password that I had for my router. Thinking it was no big deal I just went ahead and reset the router back to factory settings assuming I would be able to set up a network and encrypt it as I had before. Just testing the functionality, I was able to access my router while it was not encrypted and with the DSL modem plugged in, I also had internet access. I did this both wireless and with Ethernet cable. Â Happy to see this, I decided it would be a good idea to re-encrypt my router to prevent any outside access. So as I had done before I went to the setting page where I set up a network with a web key. The only thing I entered at all was the paraphrase for the key then saved the setting to test it out. I refreshed the available wireless networks and mine was there and was now listed as secure. I then proceeded to click on the network, entered the key, and then waited for it to connect. The problem is, it never would connect. It continuously tries to connect, and says it is trying to "acquire the network address" but never does. Since then I have been on the hunt trying many different suggestions I have seen online, but none of the situations were quite like this one.Â
I have a linksys system WRT54G at home. I had no problems with the Linksys router until about a month ago when I decided to make it a secure network. I run three computers of the wireless router (1 desktp and 2 laptops) Since making the wireless network secure I can not connect with my business laptop IBM Thinkpad X40, but thother e computers work just fine.
My ISP was unable to facilitate me, and neither was Linksys chat. I've searched and found many step-by-step guidesm kind of at my wit's end here.Right now when I connect wirelessly to the internet, it jumps on a connection labeled "linksys," which is my wireless router (BEFW11S4 ver. 4). It used to connect to "Jason" (me) but that's no longer a valid connection for some reason. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to set my connection back up properly and secure it as my own.
I had a secure connection, after trying to change the passsword, it now is unsecured. Â I was trying to connect a new Ipad to my router but I have failed miserably. Â How can I get my router a password and then use that password to connect an Ipad to my home network? I reset the router, but the connection is unsecured, I can't figure out how to get it back.Â
Situation: I have one Internet connection and I have need of two networks. One filtered with OpenDNS and the other unfiltered. I have a Speedstream DSL router provided by ISP for connecting to Internet. I have two WRT54G's and would like to utilize them to form two networks. The Speedstream is a router with a gateway address of 192.168.1.254.  From that Speedstream (only one network plug) I would like to go to a 5port switch. From that switch, I would like to configure the two WRT's to be two different networks (one using OpenDNS settings for filtering) with one having a 192.168.1.x address scheme and the other (no Internet filtering) having a 192.168.10.x scheme. Both would have DHCP enabled for their networks and the Speedstream would have DHCP disabled. There is not a need (at this point) to have the networks communicate.
Ive had a WRT54G v5 for awhile now. Â And just recently I went out of town and had turn off my router. Â When coming back and turning everything back on for some reason both wired and wireless components both have a connection then it loses the connection for awhile and comes back on. Â Ive power cycled both the router and modem. Called my provider and they said it was my router after doing some diagnostic tests. Â I tried to update the firmware and ive tried to restore to factory settings. Still it has a connection then it loses it.. Ive noticed on the modem when its not working that only the SENT light is flashing. (modem has power, received, sent, cable,pc). It is on AUTO DHCP and gets a ip and everything.
Linksys WRT54G in reset mode, that is no security, SSID broadcast as linksys as it would be after pressing the reset button. When I go into the network and sharing center on my laptop running Vista and try to connect to the network it doesn't show up in the connect to a network dialog box. Rescanning doesn't work. My friends MAC locates the router with no problem. Disabling and enabling the wireless adapter and rebooting the laptop doesn't work. I'm working right next to the router. If I go to Manage Wireless Networks and add add a new network manually and input the network name (linksys) and Security Type disabled then I can connect to the router and all is well. I've set up a few routers and never seen this problem.
I am trying to connect a myTouchQ (t-mobile) through my WRT54G. Â The android shows that I'm connected and have a good signal, but I can't access the internet or any data. Â When I turn off the wi-fi connection, I can access through the 4G network. My provider is Cox Cable. Â I've unplugged the modem and the router for 30 seconds and even reset the security.
I been using my WRT54G with no problems for 2 years now. I lost wireless. I have 1 pc wired to the router and it works fine, e-mail, accessing the internet, everything. But I have 6 wireless devices ( 2 PCs, a printer, Nintindo 3Ds, a laptop and a nook) that use the wireless part of the router at different times. Anyways, last night, one of the wireless PCs lost connection, not seeing the router. Then I checked with each of the other wireless devices. None of them see the router. I tried many different things: powering down the router for two hours, hitting the reset button for 30 seconds, I even uninstalled the router and re-installed it and ran the setup-wizard. Again the pc I have wired to the router works but none of the wireless devices can see the router.
Hooked up router and my laptop is connected to internet. Tablet attempting to get my wifi says " obtaining IP address from linksys" buts never makes the connection. how to get connection and keeping a secure wireless connection? Â Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet to Linksys Wireless G 2.4 GHz router model WRT54G v. 2
I have a 3COM cable modem and a WRT54GSV4 with v1.06.1 firmware for a home network. I have 2 desktop computers hardwired to the WRT54G and use 2 different laptops with internal wireless cards. All run Win XP Pro. I have spent numerous hours on the phone with Linksys support and always get the same response (reboot, unplug, reset, etc.)
I have to reboot my router a couple of times per day because I lose WAN access. Â This occurs with both the wireless and ethernet connections. Â Basically, I see that I'm connected to the router, but have a self-assigned IP. Â Power cycling the router does the trick. Â I never had this problem before, so I'm wondering what's up. Â The firmware has long been up to date. Â Router version is 8.0. Â
Wired connection to the router works fine. But it drops all the wireless devices (PC, phone, tablet) multiple times each day, sometimes only 30-60 minutes after reconnecting. Power cycling the router "fixes" the router and allows reconnection. There are 2 topics in the FAQ section that looked good: Getting poor or no signal from a wireless routerTop causes of dropping wireless connection on a Linksys routerbut clicking on those does not bring up anything.
I have this WRT54G wireless router and I just updated the firmware and everything. But I ran a speed test and the wireless speed is less than half the speed when I connect my pc to the router with a cable. i.e. I have a 32 Mb connection and with cable I get +31 Mb, but with wireless I barely get 13 Mb.
I have a WRT54G conected to a desktop through a wire, and conected to a laptop wirelessly. It starts working fine, and after a while i get no internet connection in my laptop nor my desktop. After this happens i disconect the power source from the router, i conect it back again and it starts working.
I have an Option wireless router that powers have of my house and i connected a WRT54G for the other end of the house, but the problem is that the Option router needs a password to access the internet for the first time, so when I try to do the quick setup on the WRT54G it can't find the internet to finish
My router's wireless connection goes down intermittently, about once a day. I can access the network with a machine that has a hardwired connection to the router only. To get it back up I have to perform the following steps.1) Reset the router.2) Go to the router web page, http:\192.168.1.13) Set router name4) Set router password5) Set wireless network name6) set wireless network secuity mode: WEP7) set wireless network password  LinkSys WRT54G V3.1 router with firmware update V4.21.1
I would like to enable VPn in WRT54G.Cann't find where to set up user name & psw. Is client necessary to set up user name & psw if there was no need to set up user name & psw for in WRT54G ?
My WRT54G lost the WiFi connection. I can get the internet if I connect the cable from my modem to my computer but my wireless connection is gone. So it's an issue with the router or settings. I called Linksys and was told the settings would have to be reset/updated. I was told there would e a fee. I did not want to pay a fee. I'd like to try to resolve myself. Â I have a Mac laptop. Verizon ISP.Â
Wired computer runs XP sp3. Wireless runs Ubuntu 10.04. Hooked to Embarq DSL modem. Setup worked flawlessly for a year or more. Now the router is sporadically dropping the internet connection for both PCs. I haven't discovered how to guarantee an immediate reconnection so the desktop is now connected directly to the modem. The modem is apparently stable as I'm not losing the internet connection. When the router is in the circuit, the internet connection may or may not appear shortly.Â
I have 2 laptops in my home, I had no problem getting one to connect to the internet. The second one I'm having trouble connecting, I am wireless, I didn't have a problem at my old house with another laptop connecting to the internet with this router. I'm trying to save myself some money by not going through my wireless company, and end up having to get their router, which I already have their modem.
I have a WRT54G router anf DSL modem. My router keeps losing connection, wired and wireless (My connection is not visible on any laptop). I tried briged mode on the modem and I tried the configuration CD. Everything works for some months or weeks. Sometimes the CD setup asks me for manual configuration. I am using modem to desktop connection?
I have to replace our WRT54G router--it's currently connected to a power booster and and omni-directional antenna. Is there a router with an antenna connection compatible with the WRT54G--preferably a single antenna model?
I have a WRT54G cascaded to an E4200 v2. I am closest to the WRT54G and connected at 54. If I am in range of the E4200, can I force a connection to it instead of the slower router?
I have the WRT54G router for years and use it to provide both a wireless network for our home computers and a wired network for by internet phone that connects me to my office phone system and for my work computer and printer. Last week, the wired network stopped working. I checked the wiring and plugged my wire into all four of the ports in the back of the router with no success. I followed the troubleshooting procedure that I found and changed the MTU setting. I tried to update the firmware but the screen seemed to lock up and I was unable to complete the task.
Is there a way to put the .EXE program in the start connection in Wireless Router WRT54G ? Â or a .ASPX page when start the connection ? I want to do it: Â I want to control the time that the users used the internet in the hotel. The users had the login and the password which one. And I want stop the connection when the user get the time.
I have some issue with internet connection and Router WRT54G. There is always "Local Connection" but no internet access. I checked that at two different laptops. One with Windows Vista and the other one with Windows XP. Both the same problem. There is a wireless connection with excellent signal strength but no internet access. I added a screen shut to see the Router setting. If more needed I will add more.
i have a linsys wrt54g router. my main computer is connected (wired) and works fine. until today my wireless devices were able to connect and access the internet using the router. now the ssid does not show as a possible network connection. i have unplugged everything, rest the router, checked setting, shutdown and reset every computer and all my wireless devices still cant locate the network connection???
We have a old Router and a new one(the Lynksys). The old one had problems with the Wifi so we bought this one. So when we connect This Router to the Modem it doesn't show connection to the internet. (The Setup fails because of this). But with the old one it does connect to the internet. So either my modem doesn't detect the new router or vice versa. So I am not sure why its not working since on the old one it works fine.
I have had a WRT54G V3 router working successfully for a number of years now with a couple wireless PCs through a cable modem with Comcast as my ISP. All of a sudden yesterday, neither PC could access the internet. No changes had been made to the router.  I contacted Comcast and they of course had me hard-wire one of my PCs into the cable modem. That worked and I was able to access the internet. However, when I tried to put the router back in place (in either a wired or wireless fashion), I could not access the internet.  I've tried following the online Linksys troubleshooting document ion. The lights that should be lit on the router are lit. I can access the router setup web page which shows the settings still intact. I've tried going through the power sequencing to no avail. Comcast says my router is the culprit of my problem, but I don't know why it would all of a sudden stop working. My wireless printer still works so it detects a signal and my PC shows it's connected, but no internet access is possible.  What do I need to do? Are there any other diagnostic tools available? I'm out-of-warranty.Â
