Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT54G Keeps Dropping Internet Connection
Dec 22, 2006
I have a WRT54G conected to a desktop through a wire, and conected to a laptop wirelessly. It starts working fine, and after a while i get no internet connection in my laptop nor my desktop. After this happens i disconect the power source from the router, i conect it back again and it starts working.

Wired connection to the router works fine. But it drops all the wireless devices (PC, phone, tablet) multiple times each day, sometimes only 30-60 minutes after reconnecting. Power cycling the router "fixes" the router and allows reconnection. There are 2 topics in the FAQ section that looked good: Getting poor or no signal from a wireless routerTop causes of dropping wireless connection on a Linksys routerbut clicking on those does not bring up anything.

I have a WRT54G wireless router and it goes through periods where it constantly has to be reset cause it keeps dropping the internet connection. Once you do a power cycle it starts working right again. But sometimes goes out 5mins later.I have the router hooked up to a Windows XP computer via an ethernet cable...and I have 1 Windows Vista laptop, 2 Android phones and a PS3 connected via wireless. The PS3 is set up following these directions: (not sure if this is what's screwing it up)
Â
"Step 1:Open a web browsersuch as Internet Explorer.
Step 2:Go to the Address bar and enter your router's IP address ("192.168.1.1" is the default IP of most Linksys routers) then press [Enter].
Step 3:When the router's web-based setup page appears, click Applications& Gaming then click DMZ.
Step 4:Select Enable on DMZ and under DMZ Host IP Address enter the PlayStation®3's IP address.
- Try 192.168.1.10 or 192.168.1.20 Save Settings.
- This IP address will need to typed in manually during online setup on ps3. I think its the first address you enter (I think this is the game's IP address).
- Use 192.168.1.1 for the wireless router's IP address on your PS3.
Step 5:Now, click Administration and Disable UPnP. Make sure you also disable UPnP on your ps3 online setup. Save Settings.
Step 6:Click Status. Write down the DNS 1: dns number and DNS 2: dns number on a piece of paper. You will enter these for DNS 1 and DNS 2 numbers during online ps3 setup. NOTE: The IP address listed on the Status page for your wireless router is not used for any setup on your ps3. Remember, to get into ps3 online setup, you have to choose Manual during setup so you can enter these numbers.
Step 7:The WP key crap and whatever during online setup should be skipped unless you specifically setup some kind of password for your wireless router when you installed it. I didn't and just left that part blank and skipped over it.That should get your wireless router and game setup. If you're still stuck, drop me a message. And, remember to do this setup after that:Linksys has a great tech support at their site. url...
I have a ps3 and did all of the wireless and ps3 online setup for it using their site technical support. Doing that seemed to throw a monkey wrench into my internet connection a while after that. I just left all of my game settings in place and did this: Logon on to your wireless router. To do this, you will probably go to url.. by typing this address into your address box on your internet explorer. Logon. If you don't know how to logon, go to and follow the instructions in technical support.

My old WRT54G V8 router has been acting up lately. It keep dropping the connection out of the blue. Sometimes I'd be browsing the Internet when the router's signal vanishes completely, it disappears from the list of available wireless networks on not just my computer, but my smartphone and all other devices in the household! Other times I keep connected to the network but there's no access to the Internet. Everything seems fine on the ISP's part, I can connect just fine directly from my modem, so I'm certain the problem is with the router. Besides, these problems are solved by just power cycling the router.

Currently running Windows 7, with internet explorer. I have most recent firmware installed on my e2500. The unit drops wireless connectivity on an intermittent basis. Sometimes after 5 minutes and sometimes after 20 or 30 minutes.

I had the 2 Wire Box that received TV and internet. Called my ISP and they gave me this access point to use instead. I hooked it up and it was fine for about 2 weeks. Suddenly for no reason it started dropping. Noticed it first when online gaming on my PS3. Checked laptop and all wireless devices down. Takes about 30 seconds.Â

Set up: Router: WRT110 1 computer connected via ethernet cable 1 computer using a wireless nic card from cisco
Â
The problem is thus: if the first computer is actively using the internet (even activities as mundane as browsing one's email) the computer connected wirelessly will lose its connection to the internet yet maintain its connection to the router. Both can be actively using the internet, but the wireless will seemingly at random drop internet access (usually in 30-120 minute intervals).
Â
The computer connected via the ethernet cable was unplugged for a week and during that time the wirelessly connected computer was used extensively and did not lose connection once.
Â
I don't understand how to even frame this problem in a concise manner, much less seek information as to how to resolve it. It's seemingly giving all priority to the computer connected via ethernet but I that's just intution speaking.

I recently changed the security mode on my router from WEP to WPA2 Personal. However, since that change, I've noticed that the wireless devices, 2-laptops, are intermittently loosing their connections. . I don't know if it has anything to do with the security mode change, but I don't want to go back to WEP for obvious reasons.

I've been using my Linksys WRT54GC for couple years now, and only recently have I started to have significant issues with the device. I'm using a 2012 Macbook Pro, and my internet connection seems to be randomly dropping every now and then. Sometimes it works just fine for couple of hours only dropping once or so, sometimes it starts dropping literally every few seconds. What I usually do is quickly restart my wifi and the connection comes back right away. I also tried not doing that, and the internet connection tends to come back up after a minute or so.Â
Â
I have read countless topics, also tried many things: changing MTU, the thresholds in router settings, security modes (it seemed to have worked fine after I changed it to WPA, not anymore though. I'm using no password now and it doesn't fix the problem either), changing the channel (my strongest signals around are on channel 1 and 11, thus I left mine on 6), I even reset the router today (held the reset button for 10 seconds~) but it didn't work either. I didn't upgrade the software since I heard stories about the software available on this site being corrupted or something, bricking the router, which is the last thing I'd want (I'm running on 1.00.7 now).
Â
I have the impression (but it's just an impression, it might as well not be the case, and just me trying to find out when it happens, since it's not always that it breaks the connection while doing that) that it breaks the connection on high load, I mean when I'm for example using skype and facebook, and then try to go on reddit at the same time - the reddit webpage won't load, and the connection is lost after few seconds. But it also started dropping every few seconds while I was playing an online game and skyping at the same time today, which isn't a particularly huge problem for a 23Mbps download and 1.5 upload speed internet I suppose, and which it never did before. I have never had such issues with my PC using a Linksys USB adapter. The connection would drop from time to time when, for example, accidentally going on pages with lots of thumbnail pictures, or trying to load 15 tabs of jpgs at the same time, it was never that much of a problem really though, I just thought it's normal.Â

my e4200 wireless. I have internet connection speed of 40mb and I have epc 3925 working in bridged mode as modem and E4200 as router. When I connect my laptop with wire on e4200 I am getting 37-38 Mbps on speedtest.net which is perfectly fine. But on wireless I am having a lot of dropping of speed: I have 2mps then jumping to 5-6 Mbps and so on it never goes more than 5-6 Mbps. When I disable WMM Support in QoS I am having perfectly constant 20mbps but... I have only g network 54mbps. [code]

I've recently purchased the EA3500 dual band wireless-N router to replace my old and somewhat tired WRT54GS.  The old router worked, I just decided to upgrade to wireless-N since all of my devices are now capable. My ISP is Comcast and I use a Motorola SB 6120 cable modem. After an extremely easy setup of the new router last week, I experienced one full day of glorious speedier network and internet traffic.  However, roughly 24 hours after installation I started experiencing intermittetent internet connectivity issues.  As in - the cable modem is accessible for 2 minutes and then can't be found for 2 minutes, repeat forever. Â
Â
After multiple different troubleshooting steps, including rebooting both the modem and the router together, separately, and releasing and renewing the router's IP Address through the router's admin page, I finally ended up resetting the router back to factory defaults and letting Windows 7 guide me through the re-installation rather than using the provided "easy setup" CD from Cisco.
Â
This seemed to have worked, but 2 days later, my "every 2 minutes" issue returned. Â
Â
Something important to note here is that all of my devices - both wired and wireless - are able to communicate with each other without issue. Â For example - while I have no access to the cable modem, I am able to stream music from a wired desktop through a wireless laptop to a wireless receiver connected to my TV. Â I am also able to access the router's admin tools during my connectivity issues.

I have to reboot my router a couple of times per day because I lose WAN access. Â This occurs with both the wireless and ethernet connections. Â Basically, I see that I'm connected to the router, but have a self-assigned IP. Â Power cycling the router does the trick. Â I never had this problem before, so I'm wondering what's up. Â The firmware has long been up to date. Â Router version is 8.0. Â

Wired computer runs XP sp3. Wireless runs Ubuntu 10.04. Hooked to Embarq DSL modem. Setup worked flawlessly for a year or more. Now the router is sporadically dropping the internet connection for both PCs. I haven't discovered how to guarantee an immediate reconnection so the desktop is now connected directly to the modem. The modem is apparently stable as I'm not losing the internet connection. When the router is in the circuit, the internet connection may or may not appear shortly.Â

I have a home network with a Linksys E4200 connected to the ISP's fiber box. The problem is that when I'm connected to the Linksys, either wired or wireless, the connection to the internet will drop after what seems to be a random amount of time (normally anywhere from 2-10 minutes). I can restore the connection by doing any of these things:-reboot Linksys-disconnect and reconnect cable from router to fiber box-if on wireless connection, make changes to the router wifi settings, like change the wifi channel. The internal network stays up, and I can ping both the internal and external ip of the router, but not the fiber box. I have also had the same behavior with an Edimax Wifi AP and less frequently with a Edimax router (once every 1-2 days). I have done everything I can think of:-changed the wifi channels-changed the ip ranges, subnets, turned router DHCP off and back on-booted the fiber box-changed cables-updated all routers to the latest firmware, the network cards with latest drivers...and loads other things that I don't remember right now. For the wifi side of things, there are no other networks in range that could interfere. The same problem occurs on both my and wife's Win 7 laptops and on the iMac (latest OSX). Here's a fun detail: while the Linksys has lost its connection to the internet, I can still access the internet through the old Edimax router connected to the same fiber box, either wired or wireless.

I've recently picked up a E4200 to build a dual band network which is targeting to link up (TV, media server, ps3, laptops) then (maintaining phones etc which only has b/g). While currently only laptops. Before doing any of these I have another cisco modem router DPC3825 which worked fine with giving wireless access.I first attemped to leave the modem router has is and connected the E4200 (ethernet 1 to internet), and changed ip to x.x.0.1 and x.x.0.2 while disabling wireless on the dpc3825 and the DCHP on the e4200 and have default gateway to x.x.0.1. My laptops can connect to wireless on E4200 but it couldn't get internet access.
Â
Then I tried turning the modem to bridge mode & resetted E4200 (factory setting x.x.1.1, auto DHCP), and then connected my devices to both wireless bands. At this point I see router status obtained ip from ISP and Internet reached full speed per ISP's mark but the connection only held up for about 1 minutes. I noticed all the devices still maintained connection to router wirelessly but the router loses internet connection (lost the ip and couldn't get it back).

One with Windows Vista and the other one with Windows XP. Both the same problem. There is a wireless connection with excellent signal strength but no internet access. I added a screen shut to see the Router setting. If more needed I will add more.

We have a old Router and a new one(the Lynksys). The old one had problems with the Wifi so we bought this one. So when we connect This Router to the Modem it doesn't show connection to the internet. (The Setup fails because of this). But with the old one it does connect to the internet. So either my modem doesn't detect the new router or vice versa. So I am not sure why its not working since on the old one it works fine.

I have had a WRT54G V3 router working successfully for a number of years now with a couple wireless PCs through a cable modem with Comcast as my ISP. All of a sudden yesterday, neither PC could access the internet. No changes had been made to the router.
Â
I contacted Comcast and they of course had me hard-wire one of my PCs into the cable modem. That worked and I was able to access the internet. However, when I tried to put the router back in place (in either a wired or wireless fashion), I could not access the internet.
Â
I've tried following the online Linksys troubleshooting document ion. The lights that should be lit on the router are lit. I can access the router setup web page which shows the settings still intact. I've tried going through the power sequencing to no avail. Comcast says my router is the culprit of my problem, but I don't know why it would all of a sudden stop working. My wireless printer still works so it detects a signal and my PC shows it's connected, but no internet access is possible.
Â
What do I need to do? Are there any other diagnostic tools available? I'm out-of-warranty.Â

I replaced a WRT54G2 V1 with a E1550 earlier this week. This router connects a sub-net of our office to the main network of our office. When the WRT54 was in place everything worked without a hitch, but the E1550 keeps dropping us from a server we have on the main network. The WRT54 is back in play until I can figure this out.

Situation: I have one Internet connection and I have need of two networks. One filtered with OpenDNS and the other unfiltered. I have a Speedstream DSL router provided by ISP for connecting to Internet. I have two WRT54G's and would like to utilize them to form two networks. The Speedstream is a router with a gateway address of 192.168.1.254.
Â
From that Speedstream (only one network plug) I would like to go to a 5port switch. From that switch, I would like to configure the two WRT's to be two different networks (one using OpenDNS settings for filtering) with one having a 192.168.1.x address scheme and the other (no Internet filtering) having a 192.168.10.x scheme. Both would have DHCP enabled for their networks and the Speedstream would have DHCP disabled. There is not a need (at this point) to have the networks communicate.

Ive had a WRT54G v5 for awhile now. Â And just recently I went out of town and had turn off my router. Â When coming back and turning everything back on for some reason both wired and wireless components both have a connection then it loses the connection for awhile and comes back on. Â Ive power cycled both the router and modem. Called my provider and they said it was my router after doing some diagnostic tests. Â I tried to update the firmware and ive tried to restore to factory settings. Still it has a connection then it loses it.. Ive noticed on the modem when its not working that only the SENT light is flashing. (modem has power, received, sent, cable,pc). It is on AUTO DHCP and gets a ip and everything.

I have attached a 320GB USB 5400 rpm hard drive to the router as NAS storage. The router is running 2.00.01 build 15 firmware. I get frequent drop-outs when transferring large files. Tonight I've been trying to transfer a 4.36GB file to the drive from my PC. I've tried several times. At exactly the same time, with about 377MB to transfer I get a message saying 'There is a problem accessing Z: make sure you are connected to the network and try again'.
