Network Switch Managed Vs Unmanaged High Network Speeds

Jun 5, 2011

I'm looking to connect my 50+ drops I have in my home based business. I transfer large files 5+gigs on a regular basis between the machines. I currently just have some cheap Netgear 8port, gigabyte switch's but when transferring files I max out around 12-15mb/sec. This takes WAY too long to transfer files.

I need a network switch so I can get my speeds up to 60+mb/sec at least. (my seconds job office has this ability)

What would I need to get this kind of speed? All my cabling is CAT6, with CAT6 ends. Would I need a managed switch to get this kind of speed?

I was looking at a couple switches. Cisco Sg 100-24 24-PORT Gigabit Switch $374 or Cheaper option Netgear Prosafe GS724T-300NAS 24 Port Gigabit Smart Switch W/ Rack Mount Kit $199

Or is there something else I could go with in this price range?

Managed Or Unmanaged Switch Network

Mar 21, 2013

i have a 20 story high rise condo bldg that i am providing internet service to. I have a 8 port managed network switch on the 1st floor. I have a cat6 line ran from each port to the 8 distrabution closets in the bldg.My question is this if i am using a managed switch to send the signal to the other switches, do the other switches also need to be managed? or can i use unmanaged switches at the other locations. I do not want each condo on those switches to be able to see or comunicate with the other condos on those switches. I am using 48 port switches in the 8 distrabution closets.

Home Network :: Managed Switch Selection For Video Streaming?

Jul 27, 2011

looking to pick a good managed gigabit switch for my central media server implementation.I will have probably 10-12 tvs connected to this along with other things like ip pbx extensions, music streamers, ip cameras etc.Now I can imagine about 2-3 tvs simultaneously streaming HD quality movies. In that case, I am assuming I will need a minimum 150-200mbps throughput switch. Is my assumption wrong?I have been looking at some switches which seem nice and relatively inexpensive but the throughput is much lower than that.If I wouldnt need that kind of throughput then can you explain me how do I come up with my max limit.I initially thought that since its going to be a gigabit switch it would be able to handle that kind of traffic through all its port at once, but I guess thats not a correct assumption. Throughput is what reall dictates simultaneous maximum? Am I correct?

Which Model Of Unmanaged Switch Can Handle 400-700 Client?

Sep 27, 2012

May i know which model of unmanaged switch can handle 400-700 client? i am currently design a hostel network.and my client will be about max 400-700 user, actually is 400 client, because maybe some of the client will connect their ipad and etc at the same time when they suffering the web.

i am gonna using Peplink Manage 580 which support 5 WAN ports.because my country ISP just provide max 20Mbps internet service to business. that's why i want a load balancer that support 5 WAN ports.i plan to use 5 line which is 20Mbps each and connect to the 5 WAN ports.after connect to Peplink balancer, there is only 1 Gigabit LAN port to let me to connect to the switch.

And i need a at least 40 port of switch which all the 40 LAN cable will connect to TP-link AP.mean that all my client is using WIFI to access to the network. And i don't have much knowledge about networking, so i wish to use and unmanaged switch which able to handle 400-700 clients.any plug and play unmanaged network switch (at least 40 port) introduce?

Home Network :: Gigabit Network Only Transferring At 10MB /sec Speeds

May 19, 2011

Cable modem into cisco-linksys E4200. 2 of the ports going out from the router plug into the wall, where one goes to the master bedroom and one goes to the living room. Once it gets to the wall jack in each of those rooms it goes out to a gigabit switch. Each of those two rooms has a computer and a TV connected, and the living room as a blu-ray also connected to the switch. The third port going out from the E4200 router goes to another gigabit switch, which is connected to a couple more computers in that room. All of the cables are either cat5e or cat6. The long cables running through the wall from the server room to the living room and master bedroom is 24gauge 4pair cat5e, it was run by a general contractor.

When I transfer between any of the computers on the network as it sits I get 11MB/sec. I get that number by clicking more details on the file transfer. In the network tab of task manager it sits pretty consistently at 10%.If I move any of the computers to be connected to the SAME switch (i tested all 3) i can transfer around 60MB/sec.Based on this testing my initial instinct is to say that the cable running between the rooms is limiting the transfer speed. However the cable is cat5e and rated for gigabit. Neither of the runs are anywhere near 300ft long. Plus the consistency of the transfer speeds at 11MB/sec makes me think it's being clearly capped at 100base-T speeds as opposed to just slowing down due to interference of the cable. As a side note there is a place in the router that tells you the speed of each port. For some reason it has one of my ports listed as gigabit and the others listed as 10/100Mbps. The yellow 3 foot cable i have is listing as gigabit, when i swap it with another cable in the router it changes the gigabit port to the one this yellow cable is on, very odd, however regardless of whether the router says its gigabit it only transfers at 11MB/sec anyway. What I'm wondering is what could be causing this limitation besides the two cables running through the wall? Is that the only thing that could be doing it? What is the best way to really test it out? Do I need to buy some kind of network testing device that tests throughput?

Dell XPS 720 H2C Internet Disconnects At High Speeds

Feb 11, 2013

Ok, so my internet disconnects while downloading at high speeds, anything higher than 2mbs. I end up having to reboot my computer because my modem looks fine and even if I reboot it, it does not fix the problem. Repairing the connection does not work either.I have a Dell XPS 720 H2C. The computer came out in 2007, costed like 6 grand lol. I'm happy with it aside form this problem though. It sucks cause they quickly stopped making the computer so tech support on it is tough to come by. I have Cox Communications and when I run speedtest.net I get 140/30. I'm hoping they aren't disconnecting people that reach a certain download speed.Anyway I'm fairly positive it is an issue with my computer or Windows Vista. I know I should upgrade to Windows 7 and I just might if it turns out to be the culprit. I just don't want to do that unless I absolutely have to. So ya, first off when using utorrent my internet will crash if I have a lot of different torrents open and downloading at the same time. It will also crash if I have one torrent active and that torrent goes above 2-2.5 mbs download speed. Also when downloading from a fast filelocker my internet will crash. The only filelocker that will crash my internet without me browsing at the same time is a filelocker called Gamerfront. The speeds are around 2mbs. I will also crash sometimes though if I'm downloading and browsing at the same time. My downloading speeds could be well below 2mbs but if I am watching youtube, streaming, or just browsing the internet sometimes the internet will crash.

That is the main problem, but sometimes, rarely I'll disconnect just from watching a youtube video. That's happened maybe 3 or 4 times. Anyway that is the summary of my issue. Again only a computer reboot will fix my connection. When I get disconnected the modem does not change at all and is still working perfectly. The modem is relatively brand new as well. I haven't tried much to fix it because I just have no idea what I could do. Device manager looks fine, no exclamation points. I know when most people have this problem it's because of a router or it's the modem but I don't use a router and my modem seems to be totally fine. [code]

Connecting 2 Public IP With Managed Switch And A Router?

Oct 11, 2011

I have two public IP's entering a location from two different sources. One is under our control and the other is a 3rd party. Lets say Ours: 1.2.3.1 3rd Party 1.2.3.2

One is coming in through a firewall/router and the other is a direct link. Each will come into a different network segment 192.168.200.0/24 and 192.168.210.0/24

some of the hosts one subnet will need to talk to the other.

My envisioned setup would be as follows.

1.2.3.1 will come in to the firewall/router into the managed switch. 1.2.3.2 will come in the the same switch but in a vlan The vlan will have a trunked port to the firewall/router to allow routing between the vlan (192.168.210.0) and the other subnet (192.168.200.0).

Cisco Switches :: SLM2048T Can Be Configured As Managed Switch

Feb 25, 2013

such as the SLM2048T can be configured as an managed switch.  Our schools have laptop carts and we want to put switches in the carts so that the laptops will be plugged into the network when not in use and software installs, updates, etc. can be pushed to the laptops while they're in the cart instead of waiting for them to be taken out, powered on and pushed over wireless.  I can find a 10/100 48-port unmanaged switch, but I really want a gigabit unmanaged switch, but they don't seem to exist so I was wondering if a managed switch can be configured and used as an unmanaged switch.  I don't want to have to assign a static IP address to the switch.

Cisco Switches :: Setting Up New SF-300 Managed Switch - Not Passing Traffic

Sep 15, 2011

I just purchased a new SF-300 managed switch for the purpose of using it on the DMZ, so we can mirror the internet port and monitor traffic for my company.  I have set it up from the web interface to miror port 1 to port 2 and that's pretty much it.  I decided to test it before putting it in production, by hooking it up to one of my core network switches, connecting a laptop to it and trying to get online.  It doesn't even connect to my DHCP server to get an IP address.  If I put the laptop back on the same subnet as the switch management IP, I can still connect to the switches web interface.  Isn't the basic functionality of a switch to pass traffic?

I should also mention that I'm not a network engineer, so there might just be something I'm missing with regard to a default setting that needs to be switched off?

Slow Speeds On PC Which Shares Wireless Network?

Aug 19, 2011

I have 3 or 4 devices connected via a wireless connection, 2 of which are in the same room. Roughly a week ago, my desktop (Vista OS) started to suffer from severely reduced download speeds (5-30kb/s), while my laptop (also Vista OS) which is on the same wireless network continues to run at normal speeds (500kb/s-1mb/s).

I have tried a system restore, scanning for viruses, updating/disabling antivirus and firewalls, connecting directly to LAN, changed wireless interface speed from g to b to mixed, changed wireless channels from 1-6-11, nothing seems to work.

I have a Thomson TG782T router with a D-Link wireless card (which is rather old).

Slow Wireless Network Connection Speeds?

Aug 13, 2011

I recently moved to a new apartment to be closer to work and this apartment complex is only covered by what I was told is a wireless hotspot.Basically, a wireless devices connects to the SSID, logs in, and then you're set with the most pitiful internet still available. Now I was told I could pay $70 bucks to have these people (Onlyinternet.net by the way) install a device that would allow me to connect my desktop to the internet service. Wasn't thrilled about that. Its $40 a month, for a 1Mb connection so that wasn't going to happen anyway.Looked up internet connection sharing and had setup my laptop to use it with my desktop. My connection on my laptop has always had a very low signal; between one and two bars no matter where I'm at in my apartment. If I go outside it'll get about 4 bars but that is about it. The actual speeds listed on the Wireless Network Connection Status go from 1Mbps, 2Mpbs, 5.5Mpbs and 11Mbps. Never higher.Today I went and picked up a NETGEAR N300 wireless router. My hope was that the router might be able to pick up the wireless connection and I could just connect through my router instead of having to use my laptop. Apparently, this is not the case.I have to use my laptop act as a modem and have it plugged into the Internet port of the router and then my desktop connected to one of the LAN ports on the router. Is this setup better then using the internet connection sharing deal? Is there any other way of increasing my signal strength and network speeds?
