Server 2008 R2 Windows Server Backup

Dec 14, 2010

I've been reading that the Windows Server Backup that is included with Server 08 R2 is pretty good. Is spending $400 on a third party utility worth it?

I'm asking because we're purchasing a new server soon and I want to know if the included backup is going to be good enough. Will be backing up server state as well as data to tape and possibly an off site server (server 2003) if I get my way.

How To Use Windows Server 2008 As Router

Sep 4, 2012

I am involved in a huge project that requires Servers PCs to function as Routers in schools to prevent broadcast traffic issues (Thread here: Need Professional Advice on 3 MANs implementations - Long story short: Can't buy regular routers because of budget and neet to use current equipment to make the network work, that is, Windows Servers 2008 with 2 NICs.

Now to the point. We are making tests but can't make Static routes to work properly. Design is as follows:

Now we have seen that we need to use this command (in cmd) to add a static route in W2008:

route add [NETWORK DESTINATION] mask [SUBNETMASK] [GATEWAY] if [NIC]

Q1: What exact command(s) do we have to use to make the Laptop in 10.10.10.0 to access Internet? How would you fill those fields based on the diagram?
Q2: How many Static routes do we need to declare? I am guessing we just need one, but I have been told that I need to activate two (one for packets sent by the laptop to the router, and one for the packets sent by the router to the laptop?)

We have tried several combinations and can't make laptop to access Internet, not even to ping 192.168.1.5. We have just accomplished pinging to 192.168.1.181 from the Laptop, and to ping 10.10.10.2 from the Server but that's as far as we went.

Windows Server 2008 R2 With Dynamic IP?

I understand how to set up a static IP address on Win Server 2008, but my provider will not allow for me to purchase a static IP because I'm a home customer, not a business. My question is this: should I just ipconfig my ip address every seven days and then change my server's address? Is there a software alternative? Is it necessary for me to change it at all?

Windows Server 2008 Core Installation

Jul 27, 2011

Any here ever used a Windows Server 2008 Core installation? Got one running on a VM right now, thought I'd try it. After installing VMWare Tools things really speeded up. Now gave it a static IP, installed Active Directory services (DNS along with it) and everything seems to work. The RAM usage is about the same, but so far it's been much more responsive, and it takes a lot less disk space, it needs just under 3GB for the moment. Any else here have one running, or seen one in a production environment? I don't think they're very common yet.

Windows 2008 R2 Server - Error 105 For Gmail Only?

Mar 8, 2013

I run a tiny home domain with 1 Windows 2008 R2 server and 2 clients (one for me and one for the hubby). Our server is DC, DNS, and DHCP server (and some other roles). Our clients are both Windows 8 but we use the standalone Chrome installation, version 25.0.1364.152 m.The problem is that on my Windows 8 client, every once in a while (not the same time period each time, but roughly every 6-15 days) I get the error in the title on one site when using Chrome only, which is Gmail. I can access and resolve Google and every other site, and my DNS server itself can resolve Gmail, but not until I flush the DNS of my local client will Gmail work again. Also strangely, I have left it on the morning when it happened before, and when I came home from work it had sorted itself out. The other client, hubby's Win 8 PC, also sometimes gets this issue, but not nearly as often as I do. Flushing the local DNS cache resolves it for him as well.

I used my ISP's DNS servers for forwarding initially, but changed to Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 when this kept happening, and it didn't seem to make a difference. I've enabled scavenging and aging and all sorts and those are faithfully renewing themselves as expected, but as the problem only lies on the clients and never the server, I'm quite lost as to what to try next.I've had a look on the Chrome forums (gulp) and nothing seems to be as specific as this fault

Windows 2008 Server / VPN Not Working Externally?

I just finished setting up VPN server on my Windows 2008 server. I defined the users that should be able to access the server and applied permissions. When I test the VPN connection on the LAN (loacally) I have no trouble connecting and establishing VPN connection. However when I tried externally it's a different story. I am not able to connect and always get the same not so clear 800 error ...The remote connection was not made because attempted VPN tunnel failed. I have Zyxel router for my internet connection and I have forwarded all relevant ports I think for the protocols I am using. Port such as 1723,1701,1702,47,50,51,500,1293,443,4500 are forwarded to the server.I am able to telnet to the server on port such as 1723.

Cisco :: LMS 4.1 Installation On Windows Server 2008 R2

Feb 7, 2012

As always, I am trying to install LMS 4.1 on windows server 2008 R2 and after the installation and login to the LMS I find the following:DCRServer is down or may not be completely up. Check if the DCRServer process is running. And after some troubleshooting I found that the LMS is not creating the CMF database and the other databases.

1. I have downloaded the installation file from Cisco website twice, so I do not think it is the file that is corrupted, also it is only evaluation license.

2. I have met all the prerequisites and requirement as in the documentation guides, but maybe there is something still wrong.

Two Nics Enabled But Cannot Access Windows 2008 Server?

Apr 15, 2011

The situation is I have a windows 2008 server with two nics, connected to two routers. The routers are connected together as well. This diagram might explain further:[url]....

Each router effectively defines a completely different network. The server nic connected to the internet facing router is configured with minimal properties (no ip6, no file sharing, no netBIOS over tcp etc), the nic connected to the internal router has mostly default properties. Both nics have static ip addresses. Both networks define a subnet of 255.255.255.0. The nics are not bridged in the server and it is not acting as a router or anything network related.

The problem is I cannot access the server when both nics are enabled. If I disable the nic for the internet facing router, then everything is fine. If I establish a connection to the server such as through remote desktop, then re-enable the nic it still works but I can't ping or make new connections.

Windows Server 2008 R2 - Benefit Of Dual Ports

May 23, 2011

I have a Dell Server on the way to me, a T110 to be specific. It will have win server 2008 R2 on it. I ordered it to come with Dual NIC cards. To be specific it is 1 card that has two rj-45 ports on it. My question is, what is the benefit of dual ports? I have heard of teaming but don't really know if that applies. I will be using this server for our company website and to facilitate local office backups as well as backing up our regional offices to it. I could see that it would benefit local LAN traffic speed, but outside of the LAN would it still benefit the speed of incoming connections from branch offices running backups?
