I have a windows 2008 foundation server at a clients property and they wish to have users access shares on a data drive that is seperate on the server.I have the server setup with active Directory Users and logon scripts to their local shares on the data drive but need to setup VPN so they can use their mapped drives at home.
View 1 RepliesI have two Windows 7 Ultimate computers and around 10 Windows XP (Home and Professional, SP2 and SP3) computers trying to connect to it. It's just a LAN (no internet access).I have set all of the password-protected sharing off on the Win 7 systems. I have tried opening up ALL of the permissions and such (since security is not really an issue).When I try to map the network drive, it won't let me merely connect to it. So, I have to click map network drive on the XP computer and hit "login with other credentials" and enter the username/pass for the user account on the Win 7 machine (we'll say Bob for user and Smith for password for the sake of example). It will mount the share (which is actually the C: root of the drive) just fine.
The only problem is the moment you restart the Windows XP system, it will lose the connection. My fix for it was to create a .bat file that contained the following: [code] I put it in the Progam FilesStartup folder to run upon boot. For the most part, it seems to work after a fashion. Some of the computers, though, will drop the connection to the two Windows 7 systems and need to be rebooted 1-2 times before they get it back again. Even clicking the .bat file manually will have the same result (you will have to reboot) if it drops the connection while you're using it. Plus, sometimes it doesn't map the drive correctly (I assume because the batch file is running before the connection has a chance to initialize on the LAN).I've also tried adding an "Everybody" user to the permissions on the Win 7 systems with full access, but it only seemed to cause problems with the existing connections.It might also be prudent to mention that both the Windows 7 and Windows XP systems are all 32 bit. I've also disabled the firewalls on the two Windows 7 systems. Neither of them have any antivirus or security software installed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedOur company has a SBS 2003 server, Netgear UTM10 router, 16 pcs. They all have static IPs assigned, and mapped drives to the server for different applications and files. Recently one machine (which I suspect has been using means to avert the UTM rules) lost connectivity to the server.I was able to get it restored.Upon getting it back on the server the user could access email and internet, but nothing else.All drives showed disconnected. The only way I could get them to connect again, was to remove the static ip address and dns information and let the pc choose.If I rebooted and put it back in, it lost the drives again.
View 16 Replies View RelatedI have set up a Home Server only running Windows 7 32Bit and all it does is store files and stream them to the devices around my LAN which is no problem because all I have to do is map the Network drive onto all the computers and when I want to manage and download files I just RDC to my lil server machine. Though what I'd really like is for my girlfriend to be able to stream media from it aswell though she lives 7 miles away so it would have to be done over the internet though I don't knowhow I could map the drives to her computer over the internet. I don't want to allow her to remote on and access the computer that way I just want her to have a selection of networked mapped drives to it in windows explorer is there ayway of doing this for free?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a network with a Western Digital NAS. Several computers are on the network, some connected via ethernet cable and some via wireless. The NAS has several shares that are password protected so that only certain users can map to them - each PC has its own private share used for backup.
The problem device is a Fujitsu Seimens Amilo laptop with Vista as the OS. When trying to display a map of the full network it is unable to display one - I have tried all of the solutions described by the Vista help but none of them work.When using Map Network Drive and trying to browse for the NAS, nothing is seen - the only computer showing on the network is the Vista laptop. If I type in the share name using \nas_nameshare_name it won't connect but if I use the IP address, such as \192.168.0.101share_name, then it does connect. I enter the password, select Reconnect at logon and the drive is mapped.
If I put the laptop to sleep the drive is still mapped when it wakes. The drive remains mapped for as long as the laptop is on but if I reboot it then the drive is lost. In fact, there are two mapped drives, one with a password and one without. After a reboot the drive with the password is still showing, but as a disconnected drive (double clicking brings up the password entry screen, and then the drive will be mapped). The drive without the password just isn't there at all.
I was battling why one machine was connecting to mapped drives correctly on reboot and someone else was not.Turns out if you use control userpasswords2 to turn on auto-login, then the network drives appear as disconnected on reboot.Turned off auto-login and it worked fine. Now this is an automated system that has to auto-login in case of a power outage.

Until now everything is ok.The mapped drives are there but I do not have access to them. The issue that is occuring is that the users indicate they temporarily loose network connection to their mapped drives on these servers. This may happen several times a day. The regional manager wants to say it's a network issue but I believe it's something b/t the server and workstation.I like to know if there are some additional parameters, debugging or configuration that might be recommended to perform on our (4) Cisco 3750G-48port POE switches (stacked) that would determine that it's not a network issue. I do not see any errors or collisions on the ports that the servers are connected nor am I seeing much of anything wrong with the user ports. There are only 3 vlans at this office, vlan 30=users, vlan 20=servers, vlan 40=mgmt.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a domain with a domain controller Server 2003. I have a backup dc running an application with server 2008. The shared folder I am trying to access is on an nt server 2000. We have had a mapped drive "I:" and have used it for years. Our copier also scans to a shared folder on the server 2000 machine. All of the desktop systems are xp sp3 with one W7 machine. A couple of weeks ago when user attempted to access the shared/mapped drive, an error would occur that "the drive was in use and they could not be logged on". Sometimes the error would say "you don't have permission to access the drive." Mind you no settings have been changed on the network. When either of these errors would occur it would occur for everyone but if I rebooted the server everyone could connect again. The same errors would occur the next day or 6 - 8 hour later. Now the error has occured "Drive is already in use and you cannot be logged in" (I have tried drive Z as well the drive is not in use) and restarting the serever no longer works. No one can access the shared drive. I have unmapped the drive on my system and have attempted to reconnect, I enter the path and check reconnect at logon and it asks for a password. I enter the administrator password (which is what I always used) and it just pops right back up asking for a password as if I entered nothing. I can ping the server with the shared folder and even logon remotely so I know it is not a physical disconnect. I am not sure what changed and have followed many suggestions found to no avail. We cannot access the shares or scan.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a file server running windows 2003 and five computers (1 windows 7, 4 windows xp-sp3).There are two shares on the server.When the router is setup with wpa2, three of the windows xp machines will have problems with mapped drives. Directly after the drives are mapped, everything works, but 10 or so hours later, users can no longer access these mapped drives and there is no way to reconnect them it seems.The other two machines (windows 7 and one windows xp machine) have no problems whatsoever.
The only thing that the three computers have in common is that they are also sharing a printer (an hp j4680) attached to one windows xp machine (not the server).If I set everything to wpa, everything works fine, but of course my wireless network speeds drop to 56mbps.
I planned for my customer to replace his old LMS 4.0.1 server under Windows 2003 by a new server under Windows 2008 R2.Customer wants also to set a new LMS name and IP address for the new server under Windows 2008 R2 and keep both servers on the network.I'm wondering what could be the best procedure to do that migration.Can I used backup / restore procedure in that case ?If yes, what file must I modify to adapt the new LMS configuration to new hostname and IP Address ?

Q1: What exact command(s) do we have to use to make the Laptop in 10.10.10.0 to access Internet? How would you fill those fields based on the diagram?
Q2: How many Static routes do we need to declare? I am guessing we just need one, but I have been told that I need to activate two (one for packets sent by the laptop to the router, and one for the packets sent by the router to the laptop?)
We have tried several combinations and can't make laptop to access Internet, not even to ping 192.168.1.5. We have just accomplished pinging to 192.168.1.181 from the Laptop, and to ping 10.10.10.2 from the Server but that's as far as we went.
I can't join a Windows 2008 Server from client computer running Windows Vista Business Edition. I get the message "Network path not Found" yet I can ping the server and the server can ping my computer.

View 6 Replies View RelatedAny here ever used a Windows Server 2008 Core installation? Got one running on a VM right now, thought I'd try it. After installing VMWare Tools things really speeded up. Now gave it a static IP, installed Active Directory services (DNS along with it) and everything seems to work. The RAM usage is about the same, but so far it's been much more responsive, and it takes a lot less disk space, it needs just under 3GB for the moment. Any else here have one running, or seen one in a production environment? I don't think they're very common yet.

The router does have a real IP address.There is a server on this network that I need to access through remote desktop. (Terminal services on Windows Server 2008)Normally I would just pass 1723 through the router and set up VPN. Without control of the router I am lost. View 1 Replies View RelatedI run a tiny home domain with 1 Windows 2008 R2 server and 2 clients (one for me and one for the hubby). Our server is DC, DNS, and DHCP server (and some other roles). Our clients are both Windows 8 but we use the standalone Chrome installation, version 25.0.1364.152 m.The problem is that on my Windows 8 client, every once in a while (not the same time period each time, but roughly every 6-15 days) I get the error in the title on one site when using Chrome only, which is Gmail. I can access and resolve Google and every other site, and my DNS server itself can resolve Gmail, but not until I flush the DNS of my local client will Gmail work again. Also strangely, I have left it on the morning when it happened before, and when I came home from work it had sorted itself out. The other client, hubby's Win 8 PC, also sometimes gets this issue, but not nearly as often as I do. Flushing the local DNS cache resolves it for him as well.
I used my ISP's DNS servers for forwarding initially, but changed to Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 when this kept happening, and it didn't seem to make a difference. I've enabled scavenging and aging and all sorts and those are faithfully renewing themselves as expected, but as the problem only lies on the clients and never the server, I'm quite lost as to what to try next.I've had a look on the Chrome forums (gulp) and nothing seems to be as specific as this fault
I just finished setting up VPN server on my Windows 2008 server. I defined the users that should be able to access the server and applied permissions. When I test the VPN connection on the LAN (loacally) I have no trouble connecting and establishing VPN connection.However when I tried externally it's a different story. I am not able to connect and always get the same not so clear 800 error ...The remote connection was not made because attempted VPN tunnel failed. I have Zyxel router for my internet connection and I have forwarded all relevant ports I think for the protocols I am using. Port such as 1723,1701,1702,47,50,51,500,1293,443,4500 are forwarded to the server.I am able to telnet to the server on port such as 1723.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAs always, I am trying to install LMS 4.1 on windows server 2008 R2 and after the installation and login to the LMS I find the following:DCRServer is down or may not be completely up. Check if the DCRServer process is running.And after some troubleshooting I found that the LMS is not creating the CMF database and the other databases.
1. I have downloaded the installation file from Cisco website twice, so I do not think it is the file that is corrupted, also it is only evaluation license.
2. I have met all the prerequisites and requirement as in the documentation guides, but maybe there is something still wrong.
