Sharing :: Unable To File / Print Share Between Windows And Linux?

Oct 21, 2011

I have between 8 and 10 computers on my home LAN. They are split between the default workgroup name 'WORKGROUP' and the name I have assigned to my home LAN.There is a mixture of Win XP, Win 7 32 & 64 and various levels of Ubuntu.

After 6 long days of trying I have made not one step forward in allowing file/printer sharing. The Windows machines are all running Comodo Internet Security, on one of which I have created my idea of a set of rules to allow file/print sharing. The Windows XP machine, with a user created set of firewall rules, can see no computers on the network (using My Network Places), aside from itself and the shares created on it.It cannot see the computers which are not in the workgroup.

The most common error message this computer generates is 'network path not found'. A win 7 32 bit computer, in the workgroup, can see all other computers that are in the workgroup, including itself, twice. It cannot access any shares on the Linux computers. It is able to access shares on the Windows XP computer.ufw Firewall is installed and enabled on one Linux machine and has a vaguely similar set of file/print sharing rules. That machine can see nothing at the Network place.A couple of hours ago it could see the machines that are NOT in my workgroup but could not see the machines that are!

Another linux computer can see the two workgroups (named and default) within the windows network, but cannot browse either workgroup. The most common error message from sharing attempts with the Linux machines is 'unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server'.Right now I am reduced to transferring USB sticks between adjacent computers....

Sharing :: How To Enable File / Print Share Through Comodo's Firewall

Oct 20, 2011

I've Googled without a relevant result. I've searched the Comodo forum at great length and in detail. I've read the Comodo guide (all 300+ pages of it). I cannot find a description, in language that I can understand, of how to enable file & print sharing through Comodo's Firewall, with their free Internet Security product, version 5.5.

File And Print Sharing Over The Internet?

Jan 20, 2012

I have two computers. One is on the East Coast of the US, the other is on the West Coast.I need to be able to "connect" these two computers for the purpose of sharing drives.I know all about Remote Desktop. This is not what I'm looking for. If I'm logged onto Computer A, I need for Computer B's disk resources to be viewable and accessible through the standard Windows Explorer as remote drives.I've already:1.unblocked TCP and UDP ports 135 through 139, and 445 in the firewall on both computers.2. completely disabled the router's firewall (one of the computers is hooked into a router; firewall has been disabled)3. forwarded the relevant ports (noted above) in the router's config to the computer I would like to access... no joy. When I try to connect to the remote PC, it comes up not found.

I can ping it, and I can connect via remote desktop (so I also know port forwarding on the router is working). But the standard "net use" and "net view" stuff is not working.I am suspecting my ISPs (on either the east coast or west coast) are filtering the "file and print sharing" ports (i.e. TCP + UDP 135 through 139 and 445), but trying to get a hold of someone at either ISP who knows about this stuff is impossible. Any experience with Comcast (West Coast) and Cablevision (East Coast), in terms of whether or not they filter traffic through these ports ?

Cisco LAN :: ASA 5520 / File And Print Sharing Through Firewall?

Feb 27, 2013

I have a network with multiple VLANs, all being firewalled on an ASA 5520. I want to be able to share drives and printers between subnets, yet even when I place a permit ip any any rule in both firewall policies, it doesnt work. It works fine between the two machines in question when they are on the same subnet, yet when they are on differing subnets, no joy.

Apart from access through the firewall, is there anything else required to make this file and print traffic pass the firewall? To my mind, it is ports 445, 137, 138, 139 that are required.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E3000 Support File And Print Sharing?

Jan 22, 2011

I recently bought an E3000 to replace my failed WRT54G v5.  With the E3000 I can't get my shared Windows folders to be accessed from my other PCs.  I called telephone support and they informed me that the E3000 doesn't support file & printer sharing.  WTH?  Is this true?  If so, I'm going to return the E3000 and get my money back.  But I never heard of a router not supporting file & printer sharing.  My WRT54G handled it just fine.

Sharing :: File Share Accessible From Mac But Not PC?

Jan 20, 2012

I created a share on our server for a few AD users and set those users up in a group I set that group to have the permissions to read/write this share. When one of those users tries to connect to the share from a PC, he is denied permissions, but when the same user connects to the share from a Mac, the file permissions work as they are set.I checked effective permissions for each user in the group, and they have the access they are supposed to. I've tried re-creating the share, recreating the group, and comparing the permissions to another share that is set up the same way (but working properly).

Sharing :: Network User Drive Showing (all Users) Personal File Share?

Jan 2, 2012

Having problem locating why when a user logs on to their profile, their personal network drive shows everyones personal drive file and they have acces to all files. This is a major security concern as uppper management files are then accessable. It is random, may not always be displayed, or always occur on the same user. The User drive normally displays.

joed on \serverusers$ (H:)

When this takes place the users name is replaced with just Users Users on \serverusers$ (H:) (This can sometimes change to Z drive)
This then exposes all user drives. This does not run from a script but is used in AD under the profile drive letter. Have tried to:Rebuild profile in Active Directory. (New Profile)Re Build user profile on workstation>Rebuild Operating system on Workstation.Change drive on the user profile in AD letter H to Z.Have also tried on a different workstation.

HP Photosmart 7150 - Mac File Won't Print Properly On Windows 7 Networked Printer

Apr 16, 2011

I have an HP Photosmart 7150 networked on a Win7 PC. I followed the below directions to set up the share on my Mac with SnowLeopard. My issue is that a file that is, say 700 kilobytes gets transmitted to the spooler as several megabytes. As a result when I print a file it runs through all of the paper in the tray. If there is enough paper loaded it will eventually print the file. Somewhere in the middle it will print several pages of garbage.

Make sure your printer is on and connected to the USB port on the router. In OS X go to System Preferences.Click on Print & Fax.Click the lock (to unlock) to make changes. Enter your password if you need to.Click on the plus (+) sign at the left to add a printer. In Leopard/Snow Leopard click on the IP tab.In the Protocol drop down, select HP JetDirect - Socket. In the Address drop down, type the IP Address of your printer (192.168.1.10)Leave Queue blank.

Give a descriptive name [Network Printer].Give a descriptive location. In the Print Using drop down either select your driver or choose the "select a driver to use" option.Choose the appropriate driver for your printer.Press OK and then click Add.

Home Network :: Get Windows 7 Laptop To File Share With XP Desktops?

Sep 26, 2011

I've recently bought a laptop with Windows 7 and would like to be able to connect to my existing home network which comprises 2 desktop PCs connected via a Dlink wireless N router which is acting as a WAP to my Billion non-wireless router (which the two desktop PCs are connected). ie the two desktops are connected via wire to the Billion. The DLink is just there to provide wireless for my laptop (and Ipod)

The first day I setup the new laptop it seemed to recognise the C drive and G drive on my desktop (which I had set to 'share'). i was able to do file transfers.

However, the next day, and since then, the C and G drives don't show up on when I click 'network' on my Laptop's Win Explorer... They did reappear once after I refreshed the Win Explorer several times, but that trick didn't work again

Internet is working fine on all computers. Just would like to be able to share files across the 3 machines...

I've experimented on the laptop with setting as 'public', 'home' and 'work' but didn't have any luck.

Setting Up Windows 7 File Sharing Permissions?

Jan 8, 2012

Im in the process of trying to setup a home network. Computer A and Computer B are in the same workgroup. Username/password are the same.

Computer A = Windows XP sp3

Computer B = Windows 7 sp1

The two computers can communicate on the network. Can ping back and fourth with ip and computername. Computer B can access from what I can tell the whole C:/ drive from computer A. Doesnt ask for a password or anything like that. Just works the way it should.

However, I cant figure out how to share the C: drive from Computer B with Computer A.

Computer B

Click on C: >> Properties >> Sharing
And this is what i see on the sharing tab

It looks like its shared cause i see the \inteli5c. But when i go onto the other computer I cant access it. This picture doesnt seem to want to work. But that link is the screen that comes up when i try to access the C: from the opposite computer.

PK5000 - Unable To Set Up File Sharing Between Wired PC And Wireless Laptop

Jan 29, 2011

After reading posts in this forum and others, and reviewing MSFT tech docs, I'm still not able to establish file sharing between the wired PC and the wireless-connected laptop. Maybe I'm working under some stupid assumptions. I am able to ping each computer by their IP address - I can ping the laptop from the desktop, and vice versa. The desktop shows the Basecomputer under network places, but on the laptop, nothing at all shows up under network places. Laptop missing something?

The details:
a) Connecting to internet via DSL, Qwest ISP, Actiontec PK5000 Advanced Networking Network Router. Advanced Networking router, to me, means that home networking shouldn't require any other hardware. Stupid assumption?

b) Desktop PC is connected to the modem/router via ethernet cable

c) Laptop is connected to the modem/router via wireless, (Dell Wireless WLAN 1350 WLAN Mini PCI Card). Assocation tab of the wireless properties gives the network authentication/data encryption types as Open/WEP.

d) Some settings of the modem, viewed via the browser (192.168.0.x)
- Wireless security type: WPA
- MAC authentication Enabled
- Firewall security level: Off (NAT only)

e) Desktop PC is Windows XP Home Edition, SP 3

f) Laptop is Windows XP Professional Version 2002, SP3

g) Both are running Windows Firewall; File and Printer Sharing is checked for both, under the Exceptions tabl

h) I ran the Network setup wizard for both, using same Workgroup name, called HOME. Desktop is called BASECOMPUTER, and Laptop is called LAPTOP. No errors in the setup. On the desktop PC, under Windows Explorer, Network Places -> Entire Network, I can see a 'Home' network under a Microsoft Windows Network icon, with the Basecomputer listed. However, LAPTOP is not listed. This is after a couple of restarts.

i) ipconfig and nbtstat ouput
From the desktop:

Netgear Router / File Sharing Between Windows 7 And Vista?

Jan 7, 2011

We have three desktops...2 Macs and a windows vista...my brother has a windows vista laptop, my mum has a Macbook laptop and for Christmas I got a windows 7 laptop! But that's not all that relevant because all I am really interested in is setting up file sharing between my old vista desktop and my new windows 7 laptop, so I can transfer my music, etc across. (I know that I could easily do this by other methods but I want filesharing set up for the future). Both computers are wirelessly connected to a Netgear router.Initially i tried fiddling around with various network settings and I've managed to get the two computers to recognise each other...and they can access the 'public' folder. I tried fiddling with advanced sharing to let them access other folders which appear as shared folders, but when i tried to access them from the other computer i was denied access.

WRT54GL - Why Does Windows 7 Make File Sharing Impossible

Oct 27, 2011

I want to transfer a few larges files from my mom's laptop to my laptop.

I brought my laptop to her house and connected to the network (her laptop is connected to Comcast through a Linksys WRT54GL router)

I made sure that network discovery, file and printer sharing, and public folder sharing is turned on for both Home/Work and Public Networks on BOTH computers. I then shared her "Downloads" folder with EVERYONE for read and write. I then located her laptop on the Network in Windows Explorer, and tried opening the Downloads folder but it won't let me, says I don't have permission.

What is the deal with this? This would have worked 100% with WinXP.

I then tried disabling Firewalls, rechecked all the settings, and then I even setup a homegroup and joined the homegroup. I saw her computer on the homegroup, double clicked it, saw the Downloads folder, double clicked it - SAME ERROR.

All I want to do is transfer a few files from her laptop to mine, why does Windows7 make this impossible?? I am so frustrated!

I then tried sharing a folder on my laptop and tried accessing it on her computer, SAME problem. What do I do now? I'm ready to uninstall Windows7 and reinstall WindowsXP, this is BS!

Sharing :: Windows 7 / XP Slow File Listings On Network Shares

Nov 2, 2011

Having got a new Windows 7 (64 bit Ultimate) PC, I decided to turn my old PC (XP Pro) into a file server. After much fun with Windows networking, I have one particular problem. Listing files on the server from the Win7 machine is ridiculously slow. A few directories have large numbers of files in them, around 10,000 image files. Browsing to one such folder on Win7, I have timed a listing and it took 48 seconds! That's a very long time to wait for a file listing. I have a network connection monitor running and it doesn't seem to be overloading the network- data was dribbling down the 100Base-T cable at about 200kiloBITS per second. Trying things the other way around, the same folder if placed on the Win7 machine and listed from the old XP machine can deliver a complete listing in about 5 seconds. I'm not sure which end has the problem; either the server is delivering file names very slowly or (my guess) the Win 7 machine is asking for them very slowly, perhaps asking for lots of crap that isn't needed like icons or file dimensions or something.
