my laptop has been stolen but I still have the box with all the details( Serial Number, MAC address for LAN and Wireless Product code etc) and I was wondering if there is any possibility in tracking it using for instance the physical MAC address.... I am sure that the thief reinstalled windows on drive C, as I was able to use and register my genuine copy of Win7 on a different laptop.

I was told it can be traced using the serial number this is not going to work as the serial number is not digital is this correct? If so is there any inbuilt device or software ect: that comes installed when you purchase the laptop? I am desperate to find my laptop as it has personal information stored on it of my partner who recently passed away and non of this is replaceable. I would prefer to find it without using the authorities as i know who this person is i just dont know where this person has stored the laptop. It would be best for the authorities not to be involved for my safety.

In the end host tabe we see only the MAC-Addresses of the host connected to this switch. No IP-Address. The corresponding IP-Addresses are in the ARP-Table of this non Cisco Layer-3 Device. The arp table can also be read by snmp. Is it possible to get the ip address in the UT End Host Table in such an environment?

The NIC is working because when I set a static IP address the machine can connect to the net. Using DHCP it goes back to that same IP address. I have tried a winsock repair as well with no go, as well as taking the machine off the domain and re-joining it. Is there something I can do on my end to get a different IP address through DHCP or do I have to get a Network engineer involved? This is a machine on a corporate LAN?

I have an HP 510 laptop running windows xp. Wherever i go, i am able to connect through wifi with a password except for where i live. I have had no problems connecting anywhere else. All other laptops and pc's connect through the network i cant access. I get a 'limited or no connectivity' message with details displaying either 'network did not assign a network address to the computer', 'cannot connect to the internet' or 'cannot renew ip address. I reviewed a few older posts and have tried ipconfig/release, ipconfig/renew, ipconfig/all to no avail. i also tried netsh ip reset reset.log and netsh windows catalog(or something along those lines) from the earlier post i read, still nothing. I do notice that when i go to properties the wep password always reverts to one i did not enter, and once in a great while when i re-enter it the icon will show 'connected to network, excellent signal strength' but Internet Explorer says not able to connect. I cant seem to figure out why i connect fine everywhere else, and why every other 'guest' computer connects to this network.
i connect using Intel(R) PRO/wireless 2200BG under properties>general under properties>wireless networks>association use windows to config is checked under properties>network>properties the network authentication is 'open' and data encryption is set to 'wep' while the network key reverts to something i did not enter. key provided is not checked under properties>wireless networks>authentication 'enable ieee 802.1x authentication for this network is not checked

Two days ago I had an Internet connection but I had to switch it so it would automatically find an ip address. I have been tacked with trying to reduce the amount packet broadcasts going through the network. I have been playing with Wireshark for a little bit only analyzing my packets but now I want to try collecting a couple of computers on my network. I know there is a little service that I can run with WinPcap but I am pretty sure there is a way to do it through the settings on my switches but i'm not sure what setting I need to use. I have 4 switches 2x Netgear GS724TS 2x Netgear GS724TR. I'm not sure what feature needs to be used to do what I want. All the switches can do SNMP and LLDP and I think it is one of these I need to use but not sure switch one to use.

Sometimes I connect it will be absolutely fine, but then the next time I log onto my laptop it can't identify the network, it says connected but doesn't have the globe in the bottom right hand corner of my screen. Then we have to reset the router a few times everytime until it recognises it, even though the settings are saved when we connected last time. It is the same with my sisters laptop. We both have Atheros network adapters so that may be a compatability issue with the router, but my brother connects fine on his everytime. A similar problem occurs with modern warfare 3 on my ps3, it won't let me sign in to playstation network half the time and keeps saying NAT type failed, even though NAT is enabled on my router. get this problem sorted and to get a consistent network connection that connects every time that would be great. We changed the security type to WEP on it a few days ago from WPA and that meant we could sign into modern warfare 3 some of the time rather than never, but we are still having issues.

(not that that matters),When the new router (Virgin Media / Cable) was installed all other laptops where connecting to it without any probs, but not this one.The laptop in question still receives an IP address, Subnet mask and Gateway from the router - Vista says Local only, no internet access. It cannot ping anything else on the network either. When I do ping it comes back destination host unreachable.

Now I've reinstalled it for better security using my newer laptop: no SSID broadcast and encryption set for WPA2-personal. However, when I enable Mac filtering and permit my newer laptop, the WAP54g does not recognize it.
Disable Mac filtering and my laptop is back on the network.
