View 1 RepliesMy Sony Vaio was stolen and I dont have any tracking software on it. I was told it can be traced using the serial number this is not going to work as the serial number is not digital is this correct? If so is there any inbuilt device or software ect: that comes installed when you purchase the laptop? I am desperate to find my laptop as it has personal information stored on it of my partner who recently passed away and non of this is replaceable. I would prefer to find it without using the authorities as i know who this person is i just dont know where this person has stored the laptop. It would be best for the authorities not to be involved for my safety.

View 1 Replies View Relatedmy laptop has been stolen but I still have the box with all the details( Serial Number, MAC address for LAN and Wireless Product code etc) and I was wondering if there is any possibility in tracking it using for instance the physical MAC address.... I am sure that the thief reinstalled windows on drive C, as I was able to use and register my genuine copy of Win7 on a different laptop.

We have an ADSL connection and use a D-Link DSL-320B modem. We have a D-Link DIR-120 router connected to this modem. This has worked perfectly fine up until today when we disconnected the router and connected a computer (call it A) directly to the modem because it was getting an unusable connection through the router for some reason. We later also performed a factory reset on the DIR-120 router.
Unfortunately, after the above steps the router did not receive any IP address (through DHCP) from the ADSL connection anymore. During my attempts to debug this I noticed that my laptop (call it B) didn't get any IP address either (when connected directly to the modem). I noticed the following syslog entries repeating over and over while trying to connect: [code]
At this point computer A could still get a connection just fine tho (when connected directly to the modem).
I then tried to change the MAC address of the router to an arbitrary one (a copy of computer B's MAC address but with the last digit increased by one). The router still did not get assigned any IP address. Finally I tried making the router clone the MAC address of a third computer (call it C). C has never been connected directly to the modem. Doing this worked. After cloning the MAC address of computer C the router is immediately assigned an IP address and the internet connection works as it did prior to all this.
Now, my question is, why would computer B and the original MAC address of the router not be able to get an IP address while two other computers worked just fine? Why would changing to an arbitrary MAC address not work while cloning the MAC address of another computer did? Could the router's MAC address have been blocked by the ISP for some reason (and what could cause this)?
but my situation seems more like a blacklisting of some MAC addresses rather then allowing just a single MAC address.
when i was on the computer last night, i noticed someone else's address at the upper right hand corner nest to "sign in". The person's address was Jaydogwalker45@yahoo.com. I also noticed a green circle next to the address, so i clicked it and i had the option of signing him out, so i did.

Finally I decided to format and installed new OS XP, though some wrong error was with my OS, unfortunately even after installing new OS still not able to connect, I checked the IP and tried both options and still cant access, i never experienced such..
I am currently living in student halls, and so far I have been successfully using the halls' provided internet (ethernet port in wall) via a wireless router (belkin wireless ADSL). Until now.I have been unable to connect or the internet either via the router, or by direct connection to the wall.Whilst connected directly into the wall socket via the ethernet cable, my pc still thinks that I am connecting directly into the modem, and still labels the wired LAN connection as 'belkin 54g', despite the router not being connected at all.I have called the technical support for the network, and they have told me that my computer is assigning the wrong ipv4 address, and they had me do a cmd prompt and run ipconfig /reset and ipconfig /renew. This still did not solve the problem, as my PC still tried to connect with the same incorrect IP address. I know the problem is not with the ethernet port or cable, as I have tried in another room that has a working connection, and I still am unable to connect to the internet (DNS error on chrome).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 2 servers. 1 is a terminal server windows 2003 sb terminal server.(working fine) and the other is server 2003 small business DC configured with dhcp, dns, SQL, & wins. Last week one of the network programs that is located on the DC started refusing connections. So doing some trouble shooting I noticed that when I ping the server name I get a local address of *.*.*.42 when the address the machine is assigned is *.*.*.5. When I do an Ipconfig /all on the DC it only shows the *.*.*.5 number. I look in DHCP and *.*.*.5 is reserved for the DC Computer. And the *.*.*.42 isn't even in the address leases. I have also looked through the DNS settings and see no alias with the .42 number. And the number does not show up in the reverse lookup zone either.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThere are 6 computers in our home network. It happens every few months or so that router would not assign valid IP address to one of the computers. So, most of the time everything works well, but there comes a moment when one of the computers (but not others) can't get valid IP address. We try turning off and then on the router and it solves the problem most of the time. But, there are cases when turning off and on the router won't solve the problem.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I was hosting a server on minecraft, a few people complained that the server was down. It was, and the problem is that my router switched to a dynamic IP after comcast installed a security system to my house. If I try to reset the router, the system goes down and takes a helluva long time to get back up. Whenever I try to switch to a static IP, however, I lose internet connection. Wondering how to fix this. Or do I have to switch back to my laptop - which might also not even work. (I'll go try that, but I'm using my desktop because it has extra RAM.)

I reviewed a few older posts and have tried ipconfig/release, ipconfig/renew, ipconfig/all to no avail. i also tried netsh ip reset reset.log and netsh windows catalog(or something along those lines) from the earlier post i read, still nothing.
