Wireless :: Laptop Wireless Good At Public Hotspot - Not At Home Wireless?

Jun 3, 2012

My Acer Aspire 5610Z laptop will automatically connect to public hotspot wireless network but when I attempt to connect to a wireless network at home, set up using a Netgear modem, I only ever get 'local' internet connection only. My wife's HP laptop has no problem making the home wireless connection.

Laptop Cannot Connect To Public Wifi Hotspot?

Aug 28, 2011

Anyway, I have a Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4056 with Win7 Home Premium 64-bit. I've had it almost a year now and have never had trouble connecting to public wifi.Recently, I moved into a new apartment with free wifi and I seem to catch the signal from my apt even though it is poor. Every time I try to connect with my Toshiba it says, "Windows is unable to connect to 'linksys'." However, my husband's HP laptop and my old eMachines laptop (7yr old) (which I am using to research the problem) can connect with absolutely no issues. When I go to the clubhouse, my Toshiba can connect, however it cannot identify the network and does not receive an actual internet connection.

So far, I have uninstalled/reinstalled and updated my network adapter (Realtek RTL8188CE), I've used Command Prompt ipconfig /reset and ipconfig /release along with several other commands suggested to other wifi connection problemsI've checked my DHCP and DNS to ensure they're enabled. As for firewalls, I have turned off windows firewall and have disabled Kaspersky protection, however I have yet to uninstall and reinstall, this being because I can connect to a password prompted internet connection at work.I am unsure how to check my IP address or any of that

Laptop Wireless Works At Home But Not School

Sep 26, 2011

1. Laptop wireless card works fine at home (wifi)

2. In the school wifi, it sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't work. e.g. I walk into a classroom and open my laptop, it works fine for 5 minutes and then no webpages will load for the remainder of the class and ping will not send another response.

This has happened in almost all classrooms so it can't be the location. There are some lucky times where I get wifi for the entire duration of the class.I asked several classmates beside me and no one else really had that issue so it must be my laptop. [code]

Home Network :: Connecting Tv To Internet Via Laptop Wireless

Apr 9, 2011

Just got an HDTV, has a load of fancy internet stuff, but only has a wired connection and I can't put my router in this room, and would rather not have to run a wire up from downstairs.

I'm guessing there is a way of connecting to the wireless on my laptop in this room, connect the laptop to the tv via an ethernet cabe, and bridge the connections or something so that my tv gets the internet from the laptop. That's gotta be possible, no? When I try it tho, the connections bridge, but the tv says "Gateway is not connected, gateway address wrong or unavailable". Using auto IP.

Home Network :: Laptop Wireless Causes Router To Disconnect

Jul 25, 2011

I have a HP G62 Laptop that's less then a year old (replacing a Dell we had for several years without problems) and a 2Wire router with ATT DSL that we've also had for years. Ever since we've had the new laptop we've been unable to use the wireless without problems. Periodically, (maybe once an hour or so) if the laptop is connected wirelessly it will make the router disconnect from the internet and cycle off. The router lights all go red, it cycles back on, green lights come on and re-connects.I've had ATT run a line test, had them send technicians here 3 times, they've gone through the house and followed the line to the box, trimming branches on the way. I've gotten a new router and I've tried a USB wireless adapter for the lap top. However, as soon as the wireless is disabled and it's plugged in by ethernet all of the problems go away. This would be fine if it was mostly used at a desktop but it's mostly used on the couch/around the house and the ethernet cables get in the way and keep breaking.

Home Network :: Best Option For Networking Two Computers With Only Hotspot?

Oct 30, 2012

I am working with a friend who has a home office that is not in a location where DSL or Cable is available. His only option for internet is using a hotspot - in this case, the Elevate Hot Spot from AT&T.

He needs to network two computers so that he can enable QuickBooks Pro in multi user mode - i.e., data file shared on Computer A, accessed by Computer B.

I thought at first that perhaps I could just setup a wireless connection for the office network - however, whenever that connection is on, then obviously neither computer can access the hotspot.

Trying to keep this at *minimal* cost.

My best idea is to old school network - i.e., connect the two computers via crossover ethernet. Am I correct that this will work? Seems to me that then both computers *should* still be able to access the hotspot via their wifi, yet also be networked for file sharing.

My questions are:

1.) Is this a correct assessment?

2.) Are there any road blocks I should be thinking about?

3.) Any reason not to do a direct connection (i.e., any reason I should entertain connecting to a switch instead?)

4.) Is there a certain order I should do things?

Toshiba Satellite Laptop Won't Stay Connected To Home Wireless?

Aug 1, 2011

I'm having trouble getting my laptop to stay connected to my wireless internet. This problem only occurs with my laptop (other laptops in the house are able to connect no problem) and with this particular wireless box (my laptop has no problems connecting and staying connected to other wireless networks, wi-fi, etc.).

I am able to connect to the wireless but it lasts only for a few minutes before connection is lost, so I basically have to connect to the internet through a ether cable (?) plugged into the wireless box.

I can't work out where the problem could be as the wireless works for other computers, and my computer works with other wireless networks!

I don't know if it matters but I am using a Toshiba satellite running on Windows 7.

Wireless Laptop Cannot Ping Wired Desktop On Home Network

May 7, 2012

I have a wired desktop PC (HP dx2480) running XP SP3 connected to a LinkSys Wireless 4-port router, and a laptop (Lenovo X61) running XP SP3 connected wireless to the same home network (192.168.0.x). The LinkSys connects by cable to a DSL router for internet access. Both PC and laptop get DHCP IPs from the Linksys (which I have hard-coded - mapped MAC to IP). They are on the same Windows Workgroup "HOME". Both Desktop and Laptop have same Windows User Logins. My desktop had a virus attack (trojan), which I removed and re-installed XP SP3 (from HP disks). Since then the PC seems to have "network sharing and discovery issues" on the network.

- The wired PC CAN ping the laptop, but laptop CANNOT ping PC.

- Both laptop and PC CAN access the internet.

- The laptop and PC COULD NOT see each other on Windows Workgroup, or see shares. This got resolved once I added IPX/SPX/NetBios Protocol on both the wired and wireless NICs on both PC/laptop respectively. NOTE: Before adding this protocol, I double-checked that File-Printer Sharing was enabled on both NICs, Windows Firewall had File-Print Sharing as exclusion. I tried everything including disabling firewall on both, disabling McAfee scanning on both, disabling Firewall on Linksys, but nothing worked.

- The laptop CAN see the NAS (Seagate GoFlexHome - connected by cable to LinkSys) using Seagate Dashboard software and direct IP. The PC CANNOT access the NAS using the Dashboard software but CAN access through direct IP. The NAS is named "goflex_home", which both can discover as \goflex_home from explorer.

- The laptop CAN see ITunes Home Share from a NAS, but the PC CANNOT see any home shares on the NAS (or from the laptop). I even added Home Sharing TCP/UDP ports as exceptions on the Firewall on the PC, but it still doesn't work.

- Some blog checking the node type on IP addresses given by DHCP. The laptop has Node Type "Hybrid", and the PC has "Unknown". I even went to PC regedit.exe and modified the and Change EnableProxy to 0 or 1 (instead of 2 that was in the PC as default).

- I have used SG TCPOptimizer on both laptop and PC to revert to Windows default?

Cisco Routers :: Is RV180 A Good Choice For Home Personal / Business Use

Apr 26, 2012

I am considering the RV180 as a wired router replacement to my current wireless and I can not find any user reviews, comments or ratings. I live in an area with a very poor wireless reception for our Sprint Cell phones (Still under contract) and I have a Sprint Airave which boosts the wireless signal for the cell phones. The Airave transmits on a 2.4Ghz band and it is stepping on my Internet wireless signal causing poor reception thought my 2-story house.

Due to this problem, I am considering installing a business class network with a router, PoE switch, and a strong Access Point. My house is pre-wired for with CAT5 wiring. I have looked at the EnGenuis EAP-350 Access Point (800Mw and 29dBm gain and PoE), The RV180 Gigabit Router, and the Cisco SD208P 8-port gigabit switch with 4 port PoE support for the Access Point. The switch will be located in a wall junction box so I need a switch with minimal ventilation requirements. Is the RV180 and SD208P the right choice to integrate in my network?

My experience with Linksys and Cisco products have been Great so I would like to stay with Cisco. I have looked at a competitors router (Netgear FVS318G-100) but the user reviews were very poor. I am not sure if I need a managed switch or not, as I will have one primary laptop running during the day and up to 3 other computes(2 laptops & 1 desktop), a wireless tablet (android), and a Xbox (wired connection) for the family (of course not all running at the same time).

Laptop Will Not Connect To T-mobile Hotspot Via Wifi

Jun 11, 2011

I just purchased a T-Mobile hotspot (ZTE) yesterday. It can connect to the T-Mobile network and appears to be working fine. My Wii can connect wirelessly to the the hotspot, but my laptop can only connect to the internet through the USB cord (which it's really not supposed to, because that's supposed to be for charging the device). When I try to connect via wifi to my hotspot, my computer can detect the network. However, after I immediately enter my password, it says that it cannot connect. When I click "Diagnose the problem" it says there was a timeout.I have Windows Vista and one of the tech support people mentioned that Windows Vista sometimes has problems connecting with handshake devices (but he didn't know how to fix it). Another person said I should have about 20 seconds to type in my password, so it shouldn't be timing out so quickly. Is it something with my computer? I have a Compaq Presario CQ60. I had this same problem when I tried to connect to a friend's hotspot a couple weeks ago (I don't remember if it was also T-Mobile or another provider, though).

Making Computer A Wireless Hotspot?

Dec 19, 2011

I have a computer hooked up to the internet with a cable modem via usb cable. The ethernet part of the modem is hooked up to my xbox 360.

I don't have a wireless router or a wireless internet connection but I do have a Belkin USB Wireless Adapter and I read on the web that you can turn your computer into a wireless hotspot if your computer has a wireless card with antennae or a usb wireless adapter.

Example, I have a Nintendo USB Wireless Adapter. All I do is stick it into my computer's USB port and it becomes a hotspot that I use to connect to my Nintendo DS to the internet wirelessly. So I basically thought that my Belkin adapter would be able to do the same thing only with whatever other devices I try, not my DS.

Can't Connect To Certain Sites Via Wireless Hotspot

Dec 9, 2012

My only options for internet have been 56k or wireless USB modems. That is, until recently. We switched from the wireless USB modems to a wireless hotspot from US Cellular (Samsung SCH-LC11). However, ever since making the switch I've had problems accessing certain websites both on our PC and on my Macbook Pro. I can't connect to Invision Free (or any of its user-created forums) or [URL]. It happens with other, random sites as well. I tried manually changing DNS settings to Google's and another one (don't recall which) and it did allow me to access the site. However, once there, every other site started moving slowly and eventually the ones in question timed out as well.

Iphone Connected To Laptop Through Wifi Hotspot But No Internet

Jan 17, 2013

I just bought a laptop installed with Windows 8. I want to connect my iPhone to the Internet through the laptop. I have tried using Connectify to set up a WiFi hotspot. It works only with WEP and my iPhone can connect to the Internet but my iPhone disconnects from the hotspot after a while and I need to restart my Connectify hotspot, which is really annoying.I googled online and find that I can use the netsh command to set up the hotspot. I run command prompt in administrator mode and type in the following:

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=adhocnetwork key=password

netsh wlan start hostednetwork

And then I share the wired network through control panel > network connections > ethernet > properties.I connect my iPhone to the hosted network and typed in the password. I see a tick next to the SSID, meaning it can connect to the hosted network.I also check the status of the hosted network. Both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity show Internet. But when I open Safari on my iPhone, it says no Internet.
