Linksys Wireless Router :: Wrt54gs Wifi Signal Weaker Than Befw11s4?
Aug 5, 2006I've had a LinkSys BEFW11S4 wireless router for several years now -- ever since it first came out (this is a version 1, not even a version 2).

View 3 RepliesI recently bought the top end ea4500 hoping its "high end" claims would get a better wifi signal in my bedroom(on my iphone 4s) than what i was getting with my WRT54G.The end result is it constantly drops signal completely or shows my network but when I try to connect says "cannot connect to wireless network" even though it's staring me right in the face. When I hook my WRT54G up, I get a signal.. all be it weak, but at least it doesn't drop out on me.Did I just waste almost $200 on a high end router that can't push a signal out stronger than my almost 7 year old WRT54G? or am i missing some setting that will make this EA4500 worth its claims? settings info:everything is pretty much on "default" aside from the SSIDs for the different bands and the corresponding WPA passwords.
also another problem, it seems like the router itself craps out every 60-120 minutes, no leds lit up on the router and my modem (Cisco DCP3010) shows no "link". Yet when hooked directly to the PC there is a "link", so pretty sure its the router and not the modem.
Just got the E4200 and it seemed great at first. Connected at 450mbps at close range (maybe 6ft away) and got 223mbps transfer. It seems that recently my signal is much weaker. I'm around 6-8ft away from the router and I'm getting between 270-360mbps, which to me is poor given the short range.
InSSIDer says the RSSI is -50, while my other wireless N router (dual band) is -35 and is in the exact same location. I'm using the 5ghz radio only, and it is set to N, and I'm using channels 44 and 48. I checked the hidden advanced wireless page and transmit power is already set to high.
My laptop has an Intel 6300 wireless card.I'm using the current firmware 1.0.02. I've noticed that the speed of the router randomly seems to drop off too (just as I type this, the link rate has gone back up to 450mbps... typical). Is the router throttling when it gets hot or something? So I just want to find out if others are experiencing similar rates at the same kind of distance. Seriously, how can you advertise something as 450mbps when you can't even get that link rate at a distance as short as 6ft?
I can't see any thing I can do to increase the link speed (back down to 270mbps now), short of a firmware update to increase the power and use higher channels. I hear the higher channels are much better, so who do I have to write to, to plead for new firmware? This is a great product, but it's totally ruined by stupid internal antennas and a weak transmit power. Maybe if we make a noise about the not so maximum performance, they might address it.
All my years on the computer and internet, i've only been connected via ethernet directly from my cable modem as i have just 1 desktop. Anyhow, i just bought a laptop yesterday and so, a router is a must to connect wirelessly. I received an old Linksys BEFW11S4 v4 router from a friend and decided to use it as it's still functional. Yes, i know it's an ancient router but i'm on a tight budget. The setup - I have the ethernet from my modem plugged into the router. I have another ethernet cable in slot #1 (router) connected to my desktop. For my laptop, it'll be a wireless connection.Issue - Now, the connection for my desktop (via ethernet cable in slot #1 on the router) works perfectly fine. I have it set up (on browser - 192.168.1.1), added the SSID, WPA Shared Key and such. The only issue is with my laptop. Everytime i switch on my laptop, i cannot establish a connection (after selecting the SSID and entering the key). The ONLY way for me to get a connection is if i power off then on the router. Each time i turn on/restart my laptop, i'll have to power off/on the router in order for me to get it to work.

However, whenever I try to connect devices to the wireless network, they can connect to the network, but they don't get any Internet. I've also updated the firmware, too.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had an XP machine using a wired connection with a Linksys WRT54GS 2.4GHz router. The only things connecting to it wireless were my wii and my PS3 which were in the next room, less than 15feet away. I purchased a Windows 7 machine for my wife for Christmas, and gave the XP machine to my kids. I moved the modem and router into the kids playroom, and set the Windows 7 machine up for wireless. Now the router is at one end of the house, and the 7 machine is about 45 feet away. The signal strength was never an issue until last week, and now the PS3 and the Win7 machine constantly have weak signal or no signal. I don't know a whole lot about networking. I am willing to move the router and modem to a central location as a last resort, but would like to keep them with the XP machine for our kids to use.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have two WRT54GS routers. I want to extend my WiFi from the router connected to my upstream in the office to a second router in the living room. I want devices configured for the SSID and passphrase of my current WiFi (which is find in the office) to work seamlessly in the living room. I understand I can do this by running a cable and configuring router 2 as a client of router 1 with router 2 exposing the same SSID and passthrase on a different channel.
But I really don't want to run a cable. There is a point where a client can see router 1 where an AP would cover the living room.
Can I put router 2 at that point, have it connect wirelessly as a client to router 1, and have it expose as an AP using the same SSID and passphrase? Can this be done without wiring the router?
Win7, wrt54gs,
It works sometimes. I imagine it has a noise problem since sharing files works, internet works. I cannot remember how to change channels on this router to save my life, though. What is special about sharing a printer?
Got a new e1000 after a RMA. The new unit has a very weak wifi signal. I've tried all different channels. It is running in mixed mode. No microwave, blue-tooth or other noise. 4 feet from the router and the signal is down to -90db. Take a few more steps away and the connection is lost.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy new EA4500 works fine all day, both wireless and wifi, on both bands, but nearly every evening, the wifi signal disappears, as shown on a wifi app for my smart phone, but not on Issid on my laptop, strangely, and my PC laptop and iPad both disconnect, then reconnect. Smart phone disconnects too. It isn't like the signal drops in strength, it just goes away! I have tried various settings on modes, and bandwidths, I am using different SSID's on each band, WPA2 security with a long non-dictionary passphrase and MAC filtering. The hardwire connection works great at 30+ Mbps even when the wifi is disappearing from the wifi scanner and the wifi connections are dropping. In other words, the cable connection/modem is working fine, but the wifi radio signal stops or the SSID drops off the signal. I really can't tell, but I know it is becoming very frustrating. The old WRT54GS works fine if I put it back on-line in the evening when these things start to happen.
I have turned off everything I can think of in the house that transmits or might transmit, in case it is an interference thing. I have tried disabling the 5 GHz side, since I can't see what is happening on that band, and the last thing I tried was changing the MTU from 1500 to 1400. So far, the past evening, it was okay, but I am not confident it will stay that way.
I've bought a E4200 router because of it's "maximum performance". With the normal settings i have a wireless range of maximum 10 m in the building. after 5m I've got a low signal.I tested a cheap Netgear-router, which had the same range as the E4200 a 125 Euro.Is my E4200 broke or is it just a bad buy? The settings are standard (that shouldn't be the problem, I guess!?)
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just discovered that my wireless download speeds are 5Mbps, compared to 16Mbps if my laptop is connected directly to the modem or wired through the router. Uploads are 2Mbps either way. I have a WRT54GS v.6 with firmware version v1.52.8 which I updated today, completed by setting factory default through the router webpage after I discovered this discrepancy. The firmware update did not improve the download speed appreciably, if at all.Should the wireless connection be that much slower than the wired connection through the router? If not, what sort of issues could I be having to account for this?
I did just replace my modem when I discovered I was having erratic speedtests and that corrected that problem. That is when I became aware of the wireless issue, so not sure how long that has been the case. I have Charter's 16/2 HSI, living in a sparsely populated area with solid internet service. There is no external nor internal interference on this 2.4Ghz band.
I just upgraded from a WRTG 54 version 2 wireless router to the Linsksys E2500. The reason for the change is to send a stronger wireless signal strength further in my house. Setup was easy to my laptop and XBox 360 but my Samsung Internet TV is another story. I can get my tv to get the wireless signal but when I click on an app nothing but error messages. Often times it will say to check my dns settings but I am not that tech savvy and don't know what to do.

I've been trying to hook it up but it will not open up when I type in the IP address. It was working last night, and it just stopped all of a sudden. Now my wireless internet is working perfectly! It loads up fast and everything, however, as soon as I plug in the cable that connects my laptop to my router, the internet gets weird. Only yahoo loads up. Gmail, facebook, and other websites dont. And when I type in the IP address, it doesn't work either. I tried to do it both with the direct internet plugged in, and then I switched to wireless. It didn't matter. Whenever the cable was plugged in, it caused problems. As soon as I unplugged it, the wireless went back to normal. I'm on wireless now without the cable plugged in now and it works fine.
