Why Windows 7 Wifi File Transfers Faster Than In Xp
Nov 30, 2012
I have a couple of pc's between which I transfer video files using Wifi, one is a laptop running XP and the other is a media centre which *was* running Windows 7. The laptop is connected to an N router using an ethernet cable to increase speed and because they are located next to each other, and the media center which is on another floor of the house uses a Wifi connection to the router.
The file transfers between the pc's used to run at about 70Mbits/sec which I was happy with. However due to problems with the media centre, I recently downgraded that pc to XP since I get much smoother HD video playback from XP MCE. But... since these changes the transfer speed has now halved to about 35 Mbits! Remember all the pc and network hardware is the same, the only change is to the operating system on the media centre pc.
At first I though maybe the different XP drivers for the network card on the media centre might be rubbish, so I changed the network card altogether, but the speed has remained the same. I have also stripped the networking configurations down to the minimum to reduce overheads, so have removed QOS and unnecessary file and print sharing etc. But none of this has worked. Am I missing something in the XP network configuration that might correct this problem, or is it simply the case that Windows 7 Wifi is just that much improved and faster than XP?

You would think that's easily found via Google but that is not the case Our firewall seems to be blocking some file transfers from wireless clients logged into the domain to our Server 03 file server so I need to make an exception but I don't know what port is actually used for that.

Netgear Wireless Bridge connects to my long term hotel's wifi, and feeds via ethernet into the Internet port of my WNDR4000.WNDR4000 has my Desktop and WHS connected via gigabit, while the HTPC is 450mbps wireless N with an Intel 6300n, and my Macbook air is connected via 5ghz wireless n as well.I'm having a very bizarre issue where all large file transfers - even over gigabit - are corrupted, while direct downloads are not. I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out why I CANNOT make a working windows install disc from a tech net iso, and eventually starting checking sha1 hashes. This is how I discovered that direct downloads to machine's hash correctly, but if I transfer it to another machine the sha1 is completely different.
For example, if I download the iso on my macbook air and transfer it to my WHS, the hash is correct on the MAcbook but on the WHS it fails. If I download it to my desktop and transfer it to the HTPC or WHS, same thing happens. There errors are bad enough that Windows setup errors out with a corrupt file error if I make the disc from a networked machine. I have to use the local file to get it to work.

I'm presently experiencing an issue with my Latitude E5410 notebook where the NIC disconnects during large file transfers. For instance, if I were to copy a large file (50+ MB) from a network drive (or vice versa, copy a 50+ MB file from my notebook to the network drive), the network icon in my taskbar suddenly changes to "No Network Access", the transfer fails, and I can't access any network resources until restarting my workstation.
At first I thought it was the network backbone in our office (SonicWALL Gateway + Dell PowerConnect switches), but this error also occurs at my house with my own networking equipment (D-Link) and NAS. The Latitude E5410 notebook is running Window 7 Professional SP1 and has a built-in "Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller", and a "Dell DW1501 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card". However, this issue seems to only occur with the Broadcom adapter when I'm physically connected to our network; when the Broadcom adapter disconnects, I can connect to our local wifi network and access network resources.

Region : Hongkong
Model : TL-WDR4900
Hardware Version : V1
Firmware Version : 3.14.3 Build 130320 Rel.39025n
ISP : PCCW Netvigator
I have upgraded to the latest firmware which solved lots of problems regarding unstable wifi connection as well as BitTorrent / P2P transfers. But I also observed that when my BT is on (Transmission for Mac) at around 50KB/s upload and download, my network latency hikes up from some 30ms to 500ms which affects a lot on web browsing or other apps requiring Internet. My BitTorrent app is showing I am merely making some 20 peers connection so I am not convinced that is an ISP problem but it's more about the router.

I live in an apartment complex with a few other roommates. We each have an ethernet cable jack in our rooms, and we also have a wireless router located in one of my roommates' rooms that we all use for WIFI. when connected to only WIFI, my interenet connection is faster than using an ethernet cable? Our WIFI network displays a speed of 65Mbps, while the ethernet network shows a 10Mbps.

I recently upgraded my internet speed from 16/Mbps to 50/Mbps download I have a linksys E2500 dual band router and various wireless devices. Some of the devices are not N capable and I don't expect they will benefit from the enhanced speed. However my N capable devices are not receiving the upgraded speed as well. I have them set to WPA2 personal and the only way I can get the 50/Mbps download rate is to bypass wireless and use an ethernet cable. If I do this then I get the speed I want and if I use Wi-Fi I get around 20/Mbps.

In University, the Wifi on my iPod is exceptionally fast. At home, I can't even load a Youtube video (music, no video) without having to give it about 20 minutes to let it buffer half way through, and the same thing on my Android phone. My Laptop is also on the network, but it is no where near as slow. I noticed the internet isn't as slow as Youtube is, so I guess it is just mainly streaming media that is slow. I have the D-Link DIR-185. I don't want to reset it, as it took me ages to get my printer set up on the network but if there are no solutions I might have to. As I am typing, the video has buffered 1/2 of the way there. I type 110WPM, so give it two minutes.

I have recently acquired a network connection of 100Mbps download and upload, and a dir 615 with dd-wrt.
I made all the connections and configurations , and everything seems to work fine it says it's connected at 300 mbps wifi, except it is not . I tested the internet speed and got this :
80 mbps Upload
35 mbps Download
I know that connecting via wifi will loose bandwith, the problem ins't that, I just cant seem to find the cause for the download rate to be less than upload and not equal... , when connected to the cable I get a stable 100/100.

am having speed issues on the wireless side of my WRT54GL v1.1 router. When I hook up a laptop to the wired port, am getting roughly 5.4mps down when wired, but only 1.2mpbs down on wireless. I am tried doing a factory restore. I have made sure that no QoS is in place. I have tried multiple devices to make sure it is not something on the device side causing this problem, but all the devices perform just as poorly on wireless but as well on wired.

I just got an E1200 router and connected wired to my win 7 machine, Im clocking in the single digit ranges (~8 mbs) download but on my dusty old win xp laptop wireless, Im getting 20 mbs (max speed from isp 20 mbs). Wife's Mac laptop wireless, same speed. What is going on? I updated the firmware, tried altering some settings based on other entries here suggested (WPA-personal, channel to "6") but no effect.

We have set up 1 computer (from now Computer A) running on windows xp as a "server" with other computers in a MSHOME group (from now Computers B -D). File permissions and sharing was set up to allow all remote users (Computers B-D) read and write access. This is however not always appropriate. Is there a way in which we can share a specific file or folder with Computer C (read and write) but not with Computer B and D?

The Windows XP SP3 PC can login to the Windows 7 PC's file shares without a problem. But, the Windows 7 PC cannot login to the XP PC's file shares. Using the GUI I always get error code 0x800704b3. Using the "Net Use" command I always get "System error 67 has occurred. The network name cannot be found."This problem occurs regardless of whether I try to connect to the Windows XP PC by network name or IP address. On the Windows 7 PC I can successfully ping the Windows XP PC by both network name and IP address.

I have a laptop and a desktop pc both connected to the same wifi network, both running win 7. File transfers are not quick enough for my liking over wifi so when I need to move a few files about I tend to hook the two together with an ethernet cable. When I try to copy a file however it defaults to using the wireless connection. I'm getting around this at the moment by just turning the wifi off on the laptop while I do the transfers but it would be nice to not have to.

I recently got a Static IP from my service provider, I'm working from home & configured a FTP server in my PC.
I have to transfer huge files say around 40 GB of data as I'm a Multimedia professional. I was using my web server, before for file transfers but there are lot of limitations to huge transfers.
My client, who is downloading using my Local Server says, it takes 3 mins to download a 9 Mb file, which took 17 sec before, when it was done with the webserver.
Does this have anything to do with my Internet connection speed as my speed is 1 - 2 Mbps. If not is there a possibility to increase my transfer speed ?

Im in the process of trying to setup a home network. Computer A and Computer B are in the same workgroup. Username/password are the same.
Computer A = Windows XP sp3
Computer B = Windows 7 sp1
The two computers can communicate on the network. Can ping back and fourth with ip and computername. Computer B can access from what I can tell the whole C:/ drive from computer A. Doesnt ask for a password or anything like that. Just works the way it should.
However, I cant figure out how to share the C: drive from Computer B with Computer A.
Computer B
Click on C: >> Properties >> Sharing
And this is what i see on the sharing tab
It looks like its shared cause i see the \inteli5c. But when i go onto the other computer I cant access it. This picture doesnt seem to want to work. But that link is the screen that comes up when i try to access the C: from the opposite computer.

I have a WRT54G v6 router and I am trying to get higher speeds from a wireless network, I have set up a dish and a cantenna and is going really well about 18-22dbi gain which is very noticeable but I have a question, does an ?Ethernet cable speeds up the transfers Like the Upload and download speeds will be faster? like a high speed cat7 or cat6 cable that can transfer data at much higher frequencies? I have cat 5 and get around 13Mbps, will cat 6 get me 16 or 17? or the router can't handle it?.Also another question is how can I make the gain on the dish higher?

I am a new network admin at my company, and I am investigating a problem that is on a network designed by someone no longer here. So, I can't ask why things were set up the way they were. Anyway, here's the issue:
We have 50Mbps WAN connections between locations. The WAN devices are 3750s, but the port plugged into the providers network is a layer 3 port. Config is below for one of the ports: [code]
So, these are Gig ports, but our service provider limits to 50Mbps. When we do a data transfer, we can't exceed about 20Mbps total on the circuit. The data transfers at maximum 15-16Mbps.
I'm not familiar with QoS. I've tried to read more about SRR, but don't understand it well enough to know. Are the QoS settings creating this restriction? Our provider swears that the bandwidth is allocated and its not being choked on their end. I have not taken off the QoS config to test it that way because I'm not 100% sure if its needed and serving some purpose. I don't want to break something in order to fix this.
Is the QoS causing this? Do I need to put a bandwidth statement on the port? Should we be using routers and LLQ?

We have three desktops...2 Macs and a windows vista...my brother has a windows vista laptop, my mum has a Macbook laptop and for Christmas I got a windows 7 laptop! But that's not all that relevant because all I am really interested in is setting up file sharing between my old vista desktop and my new windows 7 laptop, so I can transfer my music, etc across. (I know that I could easily do this by other methods but I want filesharing set up for the future). Both computers are wirelessly connected to a Netgear router.Initially i tried fiddling around with various network settings and I've managed to get the two computers to recognise each other...and they can access the 'public' folder. I tried fiddling with advanced sharing to let them access other folders which appear as shared folders, but when i tried to access them from the other computer i was denied access.

I would like to set up a home server, that will sit under the stairs so that it can link to out BT home hub (v3). The idea is then to connect the printer to it, so that we can have both a wireless printer and a central file store for pictures/vids etc.Is XP ok for this? if so, what settings do I need to change/add?Is there any software that I need to make it work? How do I make sure that it is secure for external hacking? As it will contain our personal docs/photos etc and I would hate to use them.

I have been having a number of different problems (Java not being able to start, polling jobs not being able to add devices, etc) and am wondering if the root cause could be a rights issue on my server. I have installed LMS (which was an upgrade from 3.x to 4.0 on one box and then 4.0 to 4.1 on a different box). The software is installed on a D: drive with C: as the OS drive. My understanding is that causer and local admins need full rights to the entire file structure of ..program filesciscoworks directory... and I am wondering if there are other locations that need additional access.

I want to transfer a few larges files from my mom's laptop to my laptop.
I brought my laptop to her house and connected to the network (her laptop is connected to Comcast through a Linksys WRT54GL router)
I made sure that network discovery, file and printer sharing, and public folder sharing is turned on for both Home/Work and Public Networks on BOTH computers. I then shared her "Downloads" folder with EVERYONE for read and write. I then located her laptop on the Network in Windows Explorer, and tried opening the Downloads folder but it won't let me, says I don't have permission.
What is the deal with this? This would have worked 100% with WinXP.
I then tried disabling Firewalls, rechecked all the settings, and then I even setup a homegroup and joined the homegroup. I saw her computer on the homegroup, double clicked it, saw the Downloads folder, double clicked it - SAME ERROR.
All I want to do is transfer a few files from her laptop to mine, why does Windows7 make this impossible?? I am so frustrated!
I then tried sharing a folder on my laptop and tried accessing it on her computer, SAME problem. What do I do now? I'm ready to uninstall Windows7 and reinstall WindowsXP, this is BS!
