My Windows xp computer can't connect to the DHCP server correctly and thus can't connect to the internet. It is connected through an Ethernet cable to a wireless router. All other computers on the same network connect fine to the router, both wired and wireless. This all started after I left my computer alone for a few hours and came back with it not coming out of idle. After shutting it off and turning it back on, it would not connect to the DHCP server. It assigned me the autoconfig address 169.254.189.73 because it couldn't connect to the DHCP server. I even tried a static IP but even that wouldn't fix it. I have tried the same ethernet cable in another computer and it worked fine so I know that it is because of my computer.I have tried renewing and releasing the connection using ipconfig in the command prompt but that did nothing. The settings are all the same as the other computers running through the same router. I have tried shutting down all the other computers and reconnecting the trouble one but again still nothing. The last thing I'm not sure about is the network adapter driver. I have reinstalled it but I'm not sure if the driver is correct. I have an NVIDEA nforce 10/100 Mbps Ethernet adapter. I attempted to reinstall but I'm not sure I selected the correct generation when I downloaded the driver installer. My computer says nothing about the generation of the adapter so I just chose the newest generation. My adapter is integrated in the motherboard.

We have a bit of a problem when deploying VTP v3 in our network. When command vtp primary vlan is issued, switch typically send query to appropriate multicast address in order to find out whether there is already some other one. The problem we are experiencing is that old primary server is not discovered, because it fails to reply on those multicasts.
This debug messages (from the old primary server )may be more describing.

So far, I haven't been able to find out the reason of this behaviour. In spite of that, no other strange behavior of vtp has been observed.

Im setting up SBS 2011 in a new office. From what I understand, SBS 2011 needs to be the network DHCP server for everything to run well under Active Directory. The conflict is with a FIOS router, that also needs to be the DHCP server in order to communicate with a set-top box (MOCA bridge.) Verizon lists a handful of network configurations with multiple routers that might work, although completely unsupported. Is it possible for router, SBS2011, and set-top box to coexist in harmony on the same network (preferably keeping DHCP server on the SBS box)?

FiOS gave me an Actiontec router that every other day is getting into a state where it refuses to give out IP addresses via DHCP. I have to reset the router to get it to work again. This seems ot have started in the last year, I assume due to some piece of equipment I added, or perhaps the VPN software or Windows 7 installed on my work laptop. I've not been able to figure out what is tripping up the Actiontec router, so I decided to try moving the DHCP function over the WRT610N that I have. I basically had the WRT610N setup without DHCP enabled, no NAT and no RIP, so it was basically just working as an access point. I left the Actiontec at 192.168.1.1 and assigned 192.168.1.2 to the WRT610N on the LAN side, while the WAN side is left disconnected.
I disabled DHCP on the Actiontec and enabled it on the WRT610N. I also set the DNS server to 192.168.1.1 so it would go to the Actiontec for name resolution. Using nslookup from a command prompt on a PC wireless connected to the WRT610N, I can see that names are indeed getting resolved. However, it looks like the WRT610N is setting itself up as a the gateway at 192.168.1.2. When trying to ping something out on the net, I get a message back saying that 192.168.1.2 is reporting the address as unreachable.
I assume this is because the WRT610N is handing out its own address (192.168.1.2) as the gateway. Is there anyway to get the WRT610N to hand out a different gateway address than itself? Optionally, is there a way to get the WRT610N to route requests coming to it over the Actiontec?I suppose I could just ditch the Actiontec altogether, but it seems a bit easier to use to setup port forwards and the like for various servers we have running. It also has a coax MoCA interface which I believe our FiOS set-top boxes use for their internet connectivity, so I don't want to lose that.

The e4200 1.0.03 DHCP server appears to be quite buggy. After configuring a static IP / reservation for a client which already had a dynamic IP from the pool, the e4200 continued to offer this client its pool IP. However, the DHCP client listing in the e4200 showed the client having the static IP even though it was still being offered that pool address. This may sound like user error, but I can assure you, it is not. I have had a very frustrating experience with this product, and rather than fool with tech support again, I ran `tcpdump -e -s1600 -n -vvvv -i eth0 port bootpc or port bootps` to absolutely rule out a mistake on my part, bug in the DHCP client, etc. I found that the client was always offered that old IP, even thought the e4200 status display showed the "new" static one, after doing a DHCPDISCOVER without requesting a specific IP. This condition persists across e4200 reboots even after having the client release its lease!I finally was able to resolve this by forcing the client to request the static IP from the e4200.This is unquestionably a bug in the DHCP server, and additionally, the user interface does not show the real state of the underlying DHCP leases held by clients which have static addresses / reservations. Troubleshooting this condition is well beyond the abilities of the average user.

Recently i had suffering with wireless connection problem, currently my wireless router connected to WAN directly, after that go into firewall and then go thru switch to end user PC, for LAN user there is no issue, but for wireless connected PC it is prompted with limited connectivity problem(DHCP is disable on router), after check with ipconfig /all. it seem likely due to wireless PC cannot get the IP from DHCP server. i am using DLink615 router. i had checked firewall setting there is firewall policy that connected all router ip into company LAN, but i don't think there is DHCP VPN setting up. is there anyway i can go thru firewall and get IP from DHCP server because if i set up DHCP on router, it cannot pass thru and access to LAN.

Is there a way to get the E4200 to NOT provide itself as a dns server to the DHCP clients? I have the unit set up to provide two dns servers to the clients, but the 4200 always provides itself as a third and it uses my cable providers dns servers. I am using a dns based filtering service to prevent certain material from being accessed within my network as the first two resolvers. So long as both or one of the provided servers is working it doesn't fall back to the unfiltered third, but I would prefer to remove it entirely.

I just bought a Linksys E4200v2 router and updated the firmware to 2.0.26.124551. The DHCP server is turned on however, it won't issue any IP addresses. I have to set IP reservations for all of my devices in order for the router to give them an IP address. This includes my printer, xbox360 and 2 computers. I'm also having this problem with the wired and wireless lan.

I just bought an e4200. I was using a LinkSys WRT54GS running DD-WRT alternative firmware.
One feature that I really liked in DD-WRT was the ability to assign static IP leases from the DHCP server. I liked having all of my devices running with a predictable, known IP address on my network. I have a Home Theater PC, and various controller applications that run on iPhones, etc. - some pretty homebrewed. Configuring the firewalls, etc. was much easier with IP address based controls.
Is there a way to achieve the same within the e4200's stock firmware?

The router always inserts its’ own address as the primary DNS server for the all DHCP clients even though you have set the DHCP server on the router to assign manual external addresses?
Oh I have a
WRT310n v2
firmware v2.0.01 build 004
Let me elaborate a little so I am clear what I am saying. On the router setup page go to the section that is labeled “DHCP server settings” enter 3 static DNS servers. Say 2 Google and one open dns.
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
208.67.222.222
Apply your settings.
Release your ip on your workstation, then renew it. And look at your DNS, the routers address is still the first entry.
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
I suspect this was probably a design decision so that they could allow a user to open their web browser and type something neat like [URL]. Which for the average user is fine and dandy. If my ISP didn’t suck and try to redirect everything to cached copies I probably wouldn’t have noticed it. But since I end up using the router for DNS and it picks up DNS from my ISP I end up getting Akamai IP addresses, and they have problems with SSL certs…. So you get errors.
I know I can go set the DNS server settings on the workstations. But I really don’t want to do this on all of my devices as they are mobile and switch networks, and on some networks not using the local dns breaks things. Like on the corporate network.

I am running into a DHCP problem on a Cisco 891 running 15.0(1)M2. I am running DHCP on the router and want to reserve an address for a printer. I have done this hundreds of times on hundreds of routers. Per Cisco recommendation, I let the printer lease an address to see whether it uses it's "hardware-address" or "client-id". This printer uses the "hardware-address" format. The printer has leased 10.0.0.102 right off the bat. I want it at 10.0.0.50.
I have a DHCP pool, like this:
ip dhcp pool CLIENT
network 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0
domain-name chsinc.ds
default-router 10.0.0.1
dns-server 10.0.0.1
lease 2
I create a "reservation" like so:
ip dhcp pool HP_LaserJet_Printer
host 10.0.0.50 255.255.255.0
hardware abcd.ef12.3456
Now I do a "show running-config" to see what I've put in and it looks just like above. Now we reset the network settings or change any network setting on the printer to force it to renew it's lease. What should happen and what usually happens is that the printer should request an IP, be offered 10.0.0.50, accept that IP and come up on that IP address. What is happening with this particular printer is that the printer requests a specific IP (the same IP that it had initially = 10.0.0.102), the router says OK and does not enforce the reservation. Then the router actually deletes the hardware-address config line right out of the running config. A "show running-config" shows that the reservation config now looks like this:
ip dhcp pool HP_LaserJet_Printer
host 10.0.0.50 255.255.255.0
See the logs below. Notice the ones in bold.
000226: Dec 12 17:34:01.382: DHCPD: Seeing if there is an internally specified pool class:
000227: Dec 12 17:34:01.382: DHCPD: htype 1 chaddr 101f.74b0.575c
000228: Dec 12 17:34:01.382: DHCPD: remote id 020a00000ae1e10100000001
000229: Dec 12 17:34:01.382: DHCPD: circuit id 00000000
[code]....
Is there a way to make the router enforce the reservation and not let clients just bring their own IP and actually make changes to the running-config of the router?

On my new E4200v2, after I tried to move beyond the disappointment of Cisco removing Internet Access Policy entirely, I decided to give the stripped down Parental Controls a try.
Sadly, I didn't have any luck doing what I needed to do... block my Tivo's from accessing Youtube.
I enabled Parental Controls, Added the Target Devices (my Tivo's did show up), and added "Youtube.com" as blocked site #1. Saved. Entered the parental password when prompted. Even rebooted the router.
But Youtube wasn't blocked. So I added to the target list a non-Tivo device (a Macbook) for a reality check, and rebooted the router again... still no luck. Youtube still not blocked.
So then I started to wonder if their Parental Control depends somehow on the local DHCP server & Client list. Because my E4200 has DHCP Server = OFF (I have always used a Windows Server for DHCP).
I tried to call Linksys support to get this working, but after 45 mins, including escalation to senior engineer, they really were pretty useless (no real familiariarity with my problem) then they disconnected my call!

I have had this problem now for a couple of weeks, can't seem to find a solution, even after trying all sorts of things I have seen on the web. I can not seem to get the wireless internet to work on my computer. The problem started a while ago and since then I've actually formatted my hard drive and reloaded Windows XP and everything else back onto my computer. I ahve tried connecting to the wireless at home and at work and neither is working. My computer can see the networks when but can not connect to them. I used to have no problem connecting to my home network, I have not ever connected tot he one at work, just thought I'd try it when I couldn't get it to work at home.
1. Updating my LAN driver (I've tried numerous ones and the one that works best is the one that came with my windows XP)
2. Ran both Spybot and AVG to check on spyware/malware/virus and there was not a single thing on either one.
3. Tried many combinations of setup configurations with my home wireless set up. It is a password protected hookup that I have never had problems with before. So in seeing several posts on here I have the following information from my CMD
C:>IPConfig/all
Windows IP Configuration
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : gateway-ta06zkr
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast

I haven't had internet in a couple of months until recently when I got cable broadband and a TP-Link wireless router. The setup works fine with a ADSL cable but I can't get my laptop to connect to any wireless networks including my new router. If I run a windows troubleshooting diagnostic it says I have no preferred networks. If I go to "manage wireless networks" the box is empty and if I click "add" NOTHING happens. I can see my wireless networks in the networks box on the taskbar but when I click on them nothing happens (secured or unsecured) I'm pretty sure the problem is not with the router but maybe with the adapter or the pc itself. Others can connect to the wireless network

I can use my computer just fine right now, but whenever I need to restart it, when it comes back on the internet is no longer detected. I am connected through an ethernet wire directly to the internet, with no intermediate router or network.
After failing to solve the problem on my own, the only way Ive found that has been after to restore the internet connection is using the Windows Restore centre and restoring it to about a month ago; restoring it to only a few days ago does not fix the internet.
However, also when I use the restore function, immediately upon starting my system up again I get an error message saying that the system restore has failed and that nothing was changed. But the internet now works again.
Im not really sure what I should do to check out the problem further, let alone remedy it. I run Windows Vista, 64-bit. I can provide further info if need be.
