I have had my router (linksys WRT54GS) for a few years now. I lost the disk for the inital set up and had the company send me the set up wizzard i get all the way to the last step and it tells me that the router either can connect to the router... now i was told i had to upgrade the firmware.

But the problem I'm having is not being able to make it a secure network to keep my neighbors from pinging off of my internet. I know when they come home everday without looking out my window. My connection goes from great to I'm not sure my page is ever going to load. This just started when they got two or more laptops.

Not all of the devices can get on at the same time so I called Linksys and they said our router only supports up to 11 or 12 connections.My question is how do I determine the amount of connections a router can handle at once so that I do not have this problem any more.

I've set a static ip, and setup everything according to portforward.com and previous experience, I've never had to get ports to work with either this router or computer, so I can't say if it's ever worked for either. According to [URL] the connection is timing out before connecting.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a 2wire modem connected to the Internet port of my WRT54GS which is connected to a D link DSS 16+ Fast Ethernet switch. Without the switch, I can connect wired and wirelessly to my WRT54GS. However, when I put connect my any port of my D link switch to ports 1 - 5 of WRT54GS, I loose internet all together either wired/wireless to the router or wired to the D-link switch.I wonder why the IP Address will change as I understand that the switch is just a pass through switch.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a very difficult time getting my WRT54GS to work with my Westell 6100 modem. I've been bouncing around gathering info, and what I've learned is that the goofy way CenturyLink tech support told me to hook up my old wired router (modem line into outgoing (LAN) router port) is because the Westell 6100 is a "smart modem/router". Therefore, when I run the Linksys setup CD, it sees the modem as a router, and won't properly configure. I've also learned that the Westell modem can be "dumbed down" into simply a modem by putting it into "bridge mode", which is where I'm at right now - trying to get it reset to factory defaults and resetting the connection type from PPPoE to Bridge. In the meantime, I also reset the WRT54GS to factory defaults, and now I've got another problem: the router will not allow me to set up encryption. The default setting is "Disabled", and when I click the down arrow and try to make any selection at all (preferred selection is WPA2 Personal), it reverts to Disabled. I've also tried to change the router's IP address to 192.168.2.1 (and alternately to 192.168.1.253), so it won't conflict with the modem's IP, and it freezes up every time I try.

So I didn't have to switch my Ethernet cable between my xbox and pc I bought another cable. Much to my dismay this new cable would not work. At first I thought maybe the cable was bad, but when I connect my pc directly into my modem it works fine. This had my come to the conclusion that it was my router. I have two pcs hooked into it that work fine and a laptop that connects to it wirelessly, but if I try to hook my xbox or pc to it using the new cable they just act as if there isn't a cable connected. When I look at my router the light for the ethernet port that the new cable is in will flash on and off. I've hard reset my router and updated the firmware.

All of a sudden i cant connect to the internet through it at all. when i diconnect it and hook my desktop directly to the modem it works but i need the wireless to use my laptop. View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to run a server for minecraft, which some of you may know primarily uses Port 25565. I have tried everything that I've seen suggested. I have a Linksys WRT54GS router that I have my 2 xboxes, playstation 3, pc, and wii connected to. Now, I don't use any of these components at the same time. I had an issue with my xbox and the game "Black Ops", where my NAT type was strict, but a microsoft support technician walked me through port forwarding for the xbox, and it worked. My NAT type was displayed as "open" now. This is not the case with Port 25565 however, as even though I've port forwarded 25565 to my static IP i set up for my PC (which is my server PC), Port checking sites such as "Yougetsignal" and a couple of others are still showing no connection for the current external IP and Port 25565.
I went through ipconfig in windows "cmd" and made sure I had all the ip's and subnets and dns' and whatnot correctly entered in my routers configuration page. I went into Windows firewall and put new rules for port 25565 into incoming rules. None of this seems to work. I even shut off the firewall completely (temporarily, mind you), just to eliminate that possibility, to no avail. Still getting negative responses from these sites. I am able to log into my server myself, using "localhost" as the address, but none of my minecraft buddies can get on my server. I've also tried to use Hamachi to set up a server, which doesn't need ports to be forwarded, but although they can join my hamachi network, they can't join the server. Obviously there is more of a problem than just not being able to open ports, and I am at a loss.
Also, I am aware that my external IP, given by my ISP, will change with every disconnect and reconnect of my signal. I got my current IP address during this time and gave that to my buddies so they could join the non-hamachi network. For the Hamachi server I edited my Hamachi network IP into my server software's properties file, where as it would be left blank for my non-hamachi server.
I've been using a Linksys WRT54GSV4 router since November 2005, and have rarely had any problems with it. Now today after the power went out, devices cannot connect to the internet.My PC connected directly to the cable modem results in internet connectivity.My PC connected to the router allows router access through 192.168.1.1.My PC connected to the router can NOT access the internet or otherwise get out to the modem.WiFi devices in the house cannot connect to the internet, but can still access the router through 192.168.1.1.Swapping cables results in the same behavior, so the PC can connect to the modem with either cable, and the computer can connect to the router with either cable.

I have not seen a way to go in and make any kind of security settings. Most of the files on my main computer which is connected via the wired router are labeled as private files.

View 6 Replies View RelatedCurrently I have Verizon DSL and which supplied me with a Westell 7500 modem/wireless router. I am also connecting a Linksys WRT54GS (firmware Version: 7.2.08) to the Westell 7500.
When I connect via cable or wireless to Linksys WRT54GS I am not able to establish VPN connection. I get the error “Error 619: A connection to the remote computer could not be established. So the port used for this connection was closed”.
However, when I connect via cable or wireless to Westell 7500 I am able to connect to VPN.
I tried resetting the Linksys WRT54GS to factory settings and reconfigured but no success to VPN.
At work we have a Windows 2003 setup with VPN Role on it and on my laptop I am using the built in VPN connection within Windows 7.
So the power light on my WRT54GS router is off but my LAN lights 1-4 and the WLAN light stay on when power is attached but no cables are in the ports.

I have recently upgraded my router for my home network from an old Linksys WRT54GS G router, to a new E2500 N router. I have heard/read that it is possible to reconfiqure my old router to act as a range extender for my network but I am unclear how to do so. I think this may be the same thing as an access point, but all the FAQ's I've found seem to have this work as a solo device, not as a device on existing network. I have my e2500 setup with the modem in my study and broadcasting from there, and would like to use my old G router set up as a range extender to be located in the front living room area and picking up the network signal and rebroadcasting from there without a modem or computer attached.
I changed the router's IP to 192.168.2.1 due to the same situation as this [URL] linksys and now I can't access my settings I have tried the both pips and nothing and I can't seem to get my linksys wrt54gs v7.2 to let two computers be on the internet at the same time both can be on the network but on one on the internet

I am trying to upgrade the firmware on my WRT54GS wireless router. I typed in 192.168.1.1 into the web browser and got to the setup menu but there is not much on the page. There are no menu options and just some of the information is on the page. None of the menu headers are listed. Is there any way to reset this so I can get the menu to work again?
