Cisco Firewall :: ASA 9.X Routed - Inspect Traffic For All L3 And Transparent Contexts
May 12, 2013
We are currently looking at design models for a Multi-Tenancy solution.The firewall layer will be 2 X ASA's running 9.X to take advantage of VPN's in multiple context mode and mixed L3 and L2 contexts.
We will be delivering services through multiple L3 contexts (between 2 and 5 L3 contexts for services) and 1 transparent context for customers infrastructure who will then have virtual firewalls for NAT's and VPN's etc withing their own environment.
I am not very experienced with IPS so my query is; if we were to get an IPS license for both ASA's how would the IPS fit in, can we use it to inspect traffic for all the L3 contexts and the transparent context?

We are deploying the Cisco ASA 5585 in transparent mode with multiple contexts, the port-channel was configured to connect to the core switches using dot1q trunk. We are experiencing an issue which is the core switches are configured loop guard globally, therefore the port-channel connected to the firewalls will be put into inconsistent state when the failover happen, and the two firewalls' failover can not fulfill the failover at last.
I have two queries below:
1. Does the firewall allow the BPDU passing through when it is in standby mode, for example, secondary firewall is active for group 2 and standby for group 1. does the secondary firewall block the BPDU from the vlans under group1 ?
2. Can we disable the loop guard feature on the switch port-channel or is there any other way to solve this issue ?

I have setup a 5515-X in transparent multi-mode and setup 5 security contexts with inside and outside ports, one admin and 4 others. The problem I have run into is setting up a management IP for each context. On one of my other transparent firewalls in production we were able to apply an IP to the security context (not interface) however the new firewall is running the latest software and this same functionality is not available. The only options for IP in context mode is IP AUDIT. So my next plan was to create sub-interfaces of the management interface and assign one to each context however the 5515-x does not allow sub-interfaces on the management interface. How I setup a management IP on each context?
Another interesting thing i read is that the managment IP assigned to a context (if i could figure out how to set it up), has to be in the same subnet as the data interface which if fine but it also says that the management interface should not be connected to the same switch as the data interface because of MAC address table update issues, meaning that i could not use a sub-interface of one of the already configured context ports.

have a Cisco ASA that I am trying to configure in a unique way, I want it to perform a variety of tasks;
VPN SSL
VPN Tunnels
Firewall Inside to Outside via versa
But the difficult task, is creating a DMZ with devices that are assigned fully routed IP addresses from our ISP directly, these are H323 and SIP devices that cannot use NAT, and must have a fully routed IP address assigned to them.
Obviously the problem I have with the Firewall in its default routed mode, is that it wont allow me to overlap IP addresses on the outside interface with the DMZ interface.
Could the Firewall be configured for Transparent mode between Outside and DMZ, but Routed mode between Outside and Inside?
Eth0/0: 10.0.0./24 (inside)
Eth0/1: 190.0.0.0/24 (dmz)
Eth0/2: 190.0.0.0/24 (outside)
[Code]....
But could the new Cisco ASA with the latest firmware and model be ale to do this with 1 physical firewall?

I am familiar with the PIX and ASA's. We have two Cisco 6509's with a FWSM installed in both. Our network is shown in the diagram. We use Blue Coat Packetshapers and Barracuda Proxy appliances. I plan on setting up HSRP on both 6509's for traffic coming from our ISP Cisco 2811's as well as use HSRP for our DMZ and internal network. I would like to setup the firewalls for statefull failover. We will be using PAT for our internal users and one-to-one static NAT for our DMZ.
Is it better to setup the firewall's as transparent or routed?
Since the firewall is built into the switch, how do I insert the Barracuda proxies? I can configure them as transparent or routed proxies.

I want to block some social networking sites using ASA 5510-CSC-SSM, As I searched and come to know that ASA 5510 can't inspect and intercept for https traffic because it is encrypted while traversing throught the ASA. I want the ASA to make functioning for https too, not only http. Can i perform this task by updating any software on existing device?

I've setup my Cisco ASA 5505 in transparent mode. I have a Cisco 1841 connecting to the ISP (DHCP client) and F0/0 for inside. The 1841 is the DHCP server. I have my ASA 5505 behind the 1841 in transparent mode (Vlan 1 for Outside and Vlan 1 for inside). The router config is good as when you connect a computer straight to the inside interface I get DHCP and can go to internet, no problems what so ever. But When you're trying to go through ASA isn't not working. if I add a ip any any statement to the access list it will work but having an "ip any any" in a access list is like having no firewall at all.
ciscoasa(config)# sh run

:
ASA Version 8.2(4)

firewall transparent
hostname ciscoasa
enable password zmQ6OnxvsOOEDNAy encrypted

As I am planning to deploy FWSM Module in 6513 chassis and need your valuable comments regarding the strategy that I create for this deployment.Initially (Without FWSM Deployment) all internal traffic moves in this manner.
7613(G9/5) --> 6513(G10/4) --> ISA (Internal Int.) [NATing] (ISA External Int.) -->
6513(G9/45){This is L2 port in VLAN 164} --> VLAN 164(SVI Int,IP:192.168.40.20) -->
(G9/44){This is L2 port in VLAN 164}--> ASR 1002 -->Router -->Internet.
As you can see from the Image that I am planning to deploy FWSM in transparent mode in between VLAN 164(SVI Int,IP:192.168.40.20) -[FWSM here]->(G9/44){This is L2 port in VLAN 120}By putting Inside interface of FWSM in VLAN 164 and create a new VLAN on 6513 i.e VLAN 120 and put G9/44 in it.know will this configuration will work regarding the passing of traffic through FWSM ? what improvement I have to made in this design. You can check the attached diagram.

We have a small cisco 1800 series workgroup router that seperates our network from the outside world. The data coming into our network goes into the router on interface fa0/1 and comes out on interface fa0/0. fa0/0 is split into 2 sub-interfaces (fa0/0.2 and 0/0.3). These sub-interfaces correspond to a desktop and server vlan on our network. The workgroup router is connected to a 3560G trunk port (we'll call it switch 1) and switch 1 connects to another 3560G (we'll call it switch 2). Recently I was asked to add another layer of security to our network by installing an ASA 5510 firewall and forcing certain types of traffic to authenticate using their domain credentials for our network. The firewall was set up between the router and switch 1 in transparent, multi-context mode. There are 2 security contexts, 1 for the desktop vlan and 1 for the server. Both have the same security settings applied to them since we want the same behavior regardless of whether they are trying to access the servers or the workstations.

I am working on a task of redirecting any unmatched http traffic to Symantec public transparent proxy through Cisco ASA. For the definition of uncatched http traffic, we have inbound squid servers for deploying IE proxy pac and redirect the http traffic to Symantec public transpraent proxy, however we can't deploy IE proxy pac to mobile device and non-support web browers.Since we have some application using IE proxy setting for direct http communication with external domains, the current symantec policy addes those domains in the exception list so that they are not redirect to Symantec public transparent proxy server.

I have my main branch router (3825) and two remote routers (2821's). They are connected through leased lines that do not touch the internet. For various security reasons I have to ensure that the traffic from the remote's are encrypted in a VPN tunnel even though it is still part of a private network.I have went ahead and created the tunnels and I can verify that they are up. I have applied the cryptomap to the correct interfaces, etc.So the question is - How do I ensure that traffic is not just being router out of the interface from the remote sites back to the branch router with or without using the VPN tunnel? I've taken down the tunnels and of course, the traffic is still being passed back and fourth.

In the latest code, is VPN still disabled when using contexts? If you use a 5520 as an ISP based firewall for customers, then what would be used for VPN access? Also how many contexts does a 5520 support, and would putting 2 interfaces into an etherchannel for inside, and 2 for outside work? Reason I ask about that, the inside and outside would connect to 2 different core routers. I would be for an MPLS setup.

ASA5510, ASA 8.0(4), ASDM 6.1(5), this is a productino ASA with plenty of lookups working through its 3 interfaces - outside, inside, dmz. The problem is a new use. I've segmented a switch on the inside network with a VLAN, and have a workstation routing through the switch to the default VLAN where all other hosts on the inside network reside so far. The ASA inside interface is the default gateway for the inside network. My test worksttion can PING inside hosts, so the static route is OK.
ASA 10.1.1.2/16 DNS Server 10.1.5.1/16

Switch 10.1.8.20/16

But lookups fail, Wireshark says the test workstation sends, the dns server receives and responds, but the test workstation never receives. I used the Packet Tracer tool, it gets to the last step syayin OK then finally "inspect-dns-invalid-pak". I can't find any more there to tell just what is invlid about it. So I'm trying to figure out global inspection. Here's an extract from the config:
class-map inspection_default
match default-inspection-traffic

policy-map global_policy
class inspection_default

Ive got a virtualised firewall running 3 security contexts in routed mode. What am experiencing is that i cannot connect to an OUTSIDE host through the security contexts. From the firewall itself i cannot ping the directly attached host on the OUTSIDE interface but i can ping the directly attached host on the INSIDE interface. When i reload the firewall box, the first ping to the OUTSIDE host would be successful but subsequent pings fail and thus total connectivity is lost.
I even tried upgrading to ASA version 8.4(1) but still the same.

I have two 7609S routers each with a FWSM running 4.0( 8). I am licensed for 20 contexts.
Recently, I added a context for a new application and required access to a VLAN that already had an interface in another context.
The MAC address assigned to the interface in the new context was assigned the same MAC address as the interface in the previous context. This caused an application running through the first context to fail.
I know that on the FWSM I cannot hard code a MAC address to an interface in a context so how do I get around this problem caused by the duplicate MAC addresses?

I'm having problems getting FTP to work through two FWSM virtual contexts which are connected via a vrf. All this is configured on a 6500 switch with the FWSM running 3.1(4)
CLIENT-----CONTEXT_1-------VRF------CONTEXT_2--------FTP_SERVER
At the moment we can make the control connection but when we issue commands the connection times out.
Looking at the logs we can see the initial connection made to the server on port 21 from the client, this is also seen on the second firewall context (nearest the FTP server). The data channel is then seen on the first context, made using high src & dst port numbers and initiated from the client, successfully passing the ACL/Inspection, then on the second context we see the connection being denied by the incoming ACL on the second contexts interface connected to the VRF instance.
The rules are identical on the contexts and have been made by copying and paste the rule using CSM, we are using the predefined service group 'FTP-Group' which contains both tcp 20 & 21. FTP inspection is at default on both contexts.
We have tested with Win XP (capable of Active FTP only) & Firefox 3.6.12 which is the connections we are seeing in the logs trying to do Passive FTP.
Is this a problem with teh contexts randomizing sequence numbers or TCP Normalization? Or do we just have a problem with the Inspection engine on one of the contexts (I would have expected to see this on both contexts if it was a bug).

I am just designing a solution where a FWSM consists of 2 contexts initially and has a shared outside interface pointing to the 6500 switch. There are 3 subnets connected to each of the FWSM contexts. So if anyone wants to access these 6 subnets then a route would be needed pointing to the interface vlan of the shared interface on the switch. But that would not be enough to access the subnets.. I am sure we have to define static NATS to point them to the right context where these subnets reside.
The FWSM is running version 3.x code So say 1.1.1.0(shared), 10.10.0.0(inside1), 10.20.0.0(inside2) and 10.30.0.0(inside3) reside in Context 1 and 1.1.1.0(shared), 20.10.0.0(dmz1), 20.20.0.0(dmz2) and 20.30.0.0(dmz3) reside in Context 2 in each of the context we would have to make three static NATS
static(inside1,shared) 10.10.0.0 10.10.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
static(inside2,shared) 10.20.0.0 10.20.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
static(inside3,shared) 10.30.0.0 10.30.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
The same would go for context 2 as well
static(dmz1,shared) 20.10.0.0 20.10.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
static(dmz2,shared) 20.20.0.0 20.20.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
static(dmz3,shared) 20.30.0.0 20.30.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
By creating these NAT statements, would the outside users be able to access the subnets residing in the context?
