Cisco Routers :: RV220W How To Enable Wake On Lan Over Internet
Aug 24, 2011
I am using RV220W with the latest firmware, I want to make "Wake on LAN" work for my NAS, I found the following description on Internet: "If you wish to use Wake On Lan over the internet you will need to set up your destination firewall/router to allow "Subnet Directed Broadcasts". Most routers and firewalls disable this option by default. You will then need to allow traffic through on your firewall/router on a specific port. The choice of ports is up to you."
So how can I enable "Subnet Directed Broadcasts" on RV220W?

We have acquired a cisco sge 2010 to replace our distribution switch. I set up the 802.1X network. Everything works great except I can not find how to enable 802.1x with 'Wake on LAN' on this kind of switch.
On catalyst I saw that it was sufficient to activate this control "authentication control-direction {both | in}" Except that it seems not to exist on this switch. Is there another way to enable 802.1x on WoL without using this command?
Or how to allow the magic packet (WoL) on a tagged port by unauthorized 802.1x?

My RV220W is sitting behind a Dynalink RTA1046VW ADSL Modem.
Can't get the RV220W to detect an internet connection through the WAN port. Have got the PPPoE profile set up etc. Have tried the Dynalink in bridging mode, but to no success. Tried the setup wizard.
Firmware is current: v1.0.2.4. The connection is picked up ok through the ethernet ports.

I currently have a RV220W connected over PPTP to the internet. I want to connect with an RV042 with a fixed IP Address. The connection is working, but I always have to add a static route to the remote IP-Adress that I can transmit data.Since my own IP Adress is a dynamic one that changes every day I have to enter every day in the static route as gateway adress the new WAN IP Address.

I Just got FIOS internet at Home with 43 Mbps down and 32 up (measured speed). I replaced the included router with my old reliable RV042 (V1) VPN router that I used with my old service in NY LI. This has been working very stable for week or two, but I use my old 042 to remote desktop via VPN from my work, that was limited to maybe 9-10 Mbps (Home to office) way down from the 32 up I have now (the office has 80Mbps down). So I researched that the RV220W had a VPN speed that was much faster and I ordered one that I am trying this weekend.Out of the box, I plugged accessed and just clone the MAC at the WAN port to match the replaced FIOS router. Power cycle and surprise, no IP from FIOS!. After trying a number of things, I gave up and updated the firmware to the last 1.0.2.4, and that fixed this. I still need to clone the MAC to void calling Verizon FIOS, but at least I get IPs and Internet with no trouble.Next, I configured a couple forwards for two web servers. I found about the bug in this same forum and just used the rules instead. Working good so far.
So now I test WAN bandwidths, and I found all kind of trouble. With the old RV042 and similarly to the included Verizon router I can do steadily 43d/32u. Especially at night is quite stable in these numbers. When I went and move the cables to the RV220W (exact same set up) the speed went all over the map from 4d/8u to 43d/25u. If I power cycle the box, things tend to be stable again around 43d/25u. So, after a while being stable in these numbers I start trying things to improve the 25u that should be around 32u, and recover the missing 7 mbps. Not much I can think, so I just randomly enabled the QoS settings trying to reserve full BW for my tests, and I found just that enabling WAN QoS, and nothing else, no profiles or changes in the Priority Settings, I go up to 30u consistently over a number of tests. This do not affect the down speed that is stable at 43 mbps. The surprising thing, is why this affect to the up speed when nothing else is going on in my network? and also where are the other 2 Mbps to complete the 32 Mbps that I can do with the RV042 (V1) or the cheap included router? In my opinion, if I don't use QoS, I should get full bandwidth to whatever application/computer that requests so, period.

Trying to configure my desktop to Wake on Lan. I have the BIOS set to WOL(PME) enabled, i have the ports set up, and everything. I installed a WoL Sniffer on the desktop, and sent a wake up command and the sniffer showed it came through (with the correct FF FF FF FF FF FF <Mac address repeating>). The router it's hooked up to has the UDP port 9 forwarding, ad that's what my WoL tool is sending, and i see the light by the ethernet port and it does indeed flash repeatedly when i try to send the WoL magic packet. However, nothing happens. It's shut down, plugged in, i used the soft shut down from windows,If it was the router, then the light wouldn't flash when sending it...

I have an RV220W running firmware 1.0.4.17. I have a couple of wireless laptop users that connect to the wireless without problems, but frequently cannot access the Internet. They can always access local network resources, but for some reason when laptops are first powered up or are idle for a prolonged period of time, Internet access is lost. Wired clients never experience this problem and always maintain local network and Internet connectivity.
To get the laptops to access the Internet over wireless, we have to run a TRACERT command from the command prompt to a public IP address, and then all Internet access is restored.

I am trying to configure wake on lan for my desktop and I can't seem to get it. I have tried using single port forwarding under the firewall settings but it never works. The computer's BIOS has been configured to wake on lan and so have the Ethernet ports. I have an app for the iPad that i used to use ot send out a ping to my old router (E2500) setup that used to wake the computer just fine. But this new router (RV110w) does not work at all even with the same single port forwarding set up.

Recently I bought a Cisco RV180W and would like to setup an IPsec VPN server for my team. However, it's asking for the remote client's IP or FQDN. How would I know the client's IP if I'm using WiFi connection from different places? Also, I'll be using my iphone to connect and the IP is not static. Is it Cisco not going to support this feature or already working on a fix? I searched the internet and some of the old topic on this forum. Seems like it's an old problem for RV220W and I don't see any intension that Cisco is going to provide a fix.
Also, I have an NAS and a PC connected to the RV180W on LAN. Seem like it's not possible remotely turn them on using Wake On LAN.

I have recently moved into a new flat and with my wireless router in my livingroom I am unable to get good signal in either of the bedrooms? Its a more or less open plan flat so unless I have lead in the walls or something silly like that stopping the signal. What I am trying to do is have a wireless router in the livingroom and then one in the hall way so if I have a laptop in either the livingroom or bedrooms I will still pick up signal from the closest router!I currently have a brand new Netgear DGND3300v2, Netgear DG834PN, Sagem F@ST2504 and a BT Home Hub 2.I have read about having routers act as access points and the like but I am not great with networking to be honest. I have good computer skills so if it is explained to me I can pick it up rather well.I would like the wireless router in the hall way to pick up the internet from the wireless router in the livingroom... wirelessly!

I saw older discussions over WOL and RV082/RV042. As router blocks broadcast packets from internet to lan, to make WOL work, i should change router's ARP table using telnet, probably with V1 and V2 versions this action was possible, but trying telnet connection (http://<Router IP Address>/ sysinfo123.htm?ConsoleSimulation=1 with RV082 V3 nothing appears, and telnet connection on standard port (23) fails.
How to make pass WOL magic packets through a RV082 V3 from internet to LAN ? Using simply port forwarding don't work, as router discard broadcast packets incoming from internet.

I have been trying in vain to setup my home network so that I can perform wake on lan (WOL) over the internet. I have been able to do WOL with a magic packet utility within my local network - so I know that the PC NICS are configured correctly - but this does not work when I try it from my office for example, over the internet.
I have a virtual server set up forwarding ports 9 and 7, UDP to 192.168.1.101 initially, but found some threads about using the broadcast address so changed this, but still no luck. I had to downgrade to 1.20 from 1.21 as I found several threads here about firmware versions not allowing broadcasts.
My setup is as follows:
Router: 192.168.1.1
PC1 192.168.1.101 (static assigned by MAC address in the router)
PC2 192.168.1.102 (static assigned by MAC address in the router)
Broadcast address was 192.168.1.255

I'm currently on market to get a new ADSL/WLAN/Ethernet router to my home office and I'm looking at the WAG320N as it is all-in-one solution and also 1G ethernet ports for fast file transfer. My setup is that couple PC:s and PS3 is connected with WLAN and a NAS with RAID2 is connected with ethernet cable. The thing I would like to do is allow subnet directed broadcasts from WAN side so I could use wake-on-lan feature to turn my NAS on from remote location. Does the WAG320N option "Filter Multicast" has this capability so I can send "magic packet" from Internet to turn on my NAS? How to test the WAG320N to use WOL from internet side?

Region : Germany
Model : TD-W8961NB
Hardware Version : V1
Firmware Version : 1.0.0 Build 110707 Rel.32779
ISP : Telekom Germany
I've just ordered the TD-W8961NB to replace my set of Modem & Router by one device.
Actual I have TL-WR940N, where I managed the Wake on Lan over internet by a port forward on port 9 to the local IP and setting up an IP&MAC Binding for this machine in the ARP table. By reading the user guide of TD-W8961NB, I'm missing the ARP Settings. Is there any chance to setup the WOL over Internet on this ADSL Router?

I'm having a problem with Wake on Lan. (I'll bet you never guessed from the title, eh?). I have an E4200 and I can not get WoL to work over the internet.(I'm assuming it's not actually going out to the internet when I wirelessly wake it using shawn.dynamicservice.com and the subnet, but rather the DDNS name is being resolved through the ARP cache, but I don't know. I'm still learning) Consequently, if the sentence above in parenthesis is correct, I am unable to perform WoL from outside my LAN. What am I missing?

I cannot find where on the Rv200W iset up the phase 1 authentication username and password which will then lead me onto the phase 2 stage of asking for a username password to allow me access.

Picked up a pair of RV220W's for a project I'm working on. I have several IP's available, 4 of which are assigned to/in use by a server behind the RV220W. All 4 of these IP's are static external IPs. How I can configure the RV220W so that requests to those 4 IP's get routed to the server.
Prior to purchasing this, I was under the impression what I was trying to do was called one-to-one NAT, but after reading the 'Help' document on the one-to-one NAT page, I don't think this is right. Emphasis added below: Cisco RV220W Wireless-N Network Security Firewall Help FirewallOne-to-One NATOne-to-one NAT is a way to make systems behind a firewall and configured with private IP addresses appear to have public IP addresses.One-to-One-NAT Rule TableThis table lists the list of available One-To-One NAT rules configured by the user. Private Range Begin: start ip address in private (LAN) ip addressPublic Range Begin: start ip address in the public ip address (WAN IP), Public IP Subnet Mask: The Subnet Mask of the public IPRange Length: Range length maps one to one private address to public address up to the given range.Service: This column shows service to be accepted by LAN Host. The actions that can be taken on One-to-One-NAT rules are:(Check Box At First Column Header): Selects all the entries in the table.Add: Opens the One-To-One NAT Configuration page, to add a new entry. Edit: Opens the One-To-One NAT Configuration page, to edit the selected entry.Delete: Deletes the selected entries.
So according to their documentation, the server in question would need to be configured with a private IP. Unfortunately, one of the applications I use is licensed via IP address and my understanding is that I cannot use the software with private/non-routable IP addresses.
Is the RV220W capable of not only securing the line (firewall, access rules, content filtering, port trigering & forwarding etc) but also doing what I was hoping to do (keeping the external IP's on the server, and routing appropriately)?

I'm using a RV220W router, and recently got shifted to a dynamic IP solution. Now, I've got a no-ip.org address, but the update service seems to be on no-ip.com. So, I try to enter mydomain.no-ip.org OR mydomain.no-ip.com in the dynamic dns settings, under Host and Domain Name, but when saving the settings it says
'The hostname specified does not exist in this user account' ,which seems to indicate that it manages to login to the update service but gets a negative reply. Is it possible to use the RV220W with no-ip.org/com?

We have 2 sites connected thru 2 RV220W routers via VPN and most things are working fine. I have noticed however, that any device that has a web interface, i.e. our Sharp Copier and our Freenas server, is inaccessible. The page tries to come up but then I get the Cisco "server is down" page generated by the RV220W.
I can pull up the web interface pages if I use a machine on the local LAN but not on any machine across the VPN. The only commonality I can think of is the RV220W blocking that traffic for some reason..

Is there anyway to associate a name to an IP in the RV220W? I am coming from a WRVS4400N v2. Folks are complaining that they can't connect, for example via Real VNC, via the PC name any longer. They have to use the IP address. In the past I put the names of the PCs in the WRVS4400N when I reserved IPs via MAC addresses (some call this assigning static IPs). There isn't any place in the RV220W to put the name. Even when I look at the DHCP list a lot of them show up as "unknown". I am sure this is a NETBIOS thing but I'd rather fix this in the router as I have always done in the past.

Having a strange problem that just started this week and got worse this evening. I have a RV220W that is feeding my network. The RV220W sits behind a broadband modem and acts as the DHCP for the network and those computers access the internet that way. Anyway, tonight started an issue where the the RV220W just disappears. Becomes unpingable. I recycle power, and within anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes, it's gone. No longer pingable. Even if I plug a latop directly into it.If I power cycle the RV220W it comes back and I can ping it and access it and its settings. 5 to 10 mins later, I again lose it. Nothing was done. Its been working fine for a few weeks. Had a similar outage last Tuesday, but a recycle of everything brought everything back into line. After I lose connection to it, the lights I expect to be lit remain lit.

I'm an IT professional with more than 10 years experience. I have spent last 5 days trying to figure out why the wifi connection to this router is so slow, but still no luck. I'm getting only 13Mbps even if my laptop is next to the router! (wired connection worked ok)
I have tried all sort of setting combinations, 2.4GHz/5GHz; N only/ G,N Mixed; Auto/20MHz bandwidth; different channels; WPA2 encrypted vs open; disable firewall; wmm enabled/disabled; 1.0.0.26/1.0.1.0 firmware... no matter what I try, I always get only 10 - 15Mbps speed.
Once I replace this router with my old router, it worked perfectly --- getting 70 - 80Mbps with exactly the same testing environment and configuration.
I really expect this router to offer much faster wireless speed according to this review: [URL]
