Cisco Switches :: Single Mode Fiber Link Between SGE2000P And Catalyst 2960?
Jun 4, 2013
I'm working with a customer who has an SGE2000P and a Catalyst 2960 to setup and configure a single mode fiber link. The SGE2000P has an MFELX1 fiber GBIC and the 2960 has a GLC-LH-SMD GBIC. When I have the customer plug in his fiber, there is a power light that comes on on the MFELX1 GBIC. Neither GBICs/switches show that a link or activity is occurring, but the presence of that light makes me think that they are connecting somehow. Are these two switches/GBICs compatible?

We have a project in which we are using 34 Cisco SG200-18's each with a MGBLX1 (LC Single Mode Fiber) SFP mini-GBIC.All the fiber's come back to one building where we must "bridge" all 34 fiber connections. What hardware should be used to accomplish this? A L2 switch? For example, a 12 port SFP Switch with Fiber SFP's accepting the first 12 fiber connections, then other switch with SFP for the next 12 and so on, until there is a overall capacity of 36 and having patch cables between the 3 switches?
what cisco or non cisco hardware would work with these SF200-18's to accomplish this?

I'm looking for switches that support single mode fiber connections and would like to know if "WS-C3750-FS-S Catalyst 3750 24 100BaseFX + 2 SFP" and "WS-C3750G-12S-S Catalyst 3750 12 SFP" can serve the purpose?

Prior we only had 62.5u multi mode.I've got 3750x switches and new SM SFP and yellow fiber patch cables. None of my links show connected. No lights and trunk port interfaces show down/down.
Is there a special command you have to do on a port when using SM fiber? Do you think I need cross over fibers?
Also, should I be able to see a laser signal light like MM or is SM a different frequency so it's not as visible as MM?

connecting a Cisco 3945 Router to an Ethernet WAN Link. The service provider has provided a 100M Ethernet Single Mode Fiber handoff to the customer premises with SC Connector. The CPE configuration proposed for this setup is like this. [code]
Since the SFP has LC Connector, i suppose i need to have an SC-LC Cable for connecting the Ethernet link. Do i need anything else, apart from above?

I have 3 Data centres which I am linking up via Single Mode Single Strand Fibre. The switches at each data centre are WS-C4948-E
-Distance between Data Centre 1 and Data Centre 2 is 60km single mode single strand
-Distance between Data Centre 2 and Data Centre 3 is 70km single mode single strand
What type of SFP do I need to use in each Data Centre for the WS-C4948-E switches for these distances.

I have a 7206vxr with a NPE-G1 card in it. I am planning to add some PA-GE card with a ws-g5486 to light single mode Gigabit dark fibre.
it seems that users are experiencing throughput of around 200Mbps. Is this per card, or for the entire chasis? I have 6 free slots, if i were to fill 3 of them up with PA-GE card would i get 200Mbps on each card ?

I'm having a problem with some new gear and can't seem to figure it out. I have a 3750X-48P-S with a C3KX-10G-NM using SFP-10G-LR transceivers and I'm trying to trunk that with a 6509 that has a X2-10G-LR transceiver over single mode fiber. This is not working. Cisco TAC says the SFP+'s that we just got brand new are both bad and we need to order new ones. I find that hard to believe but who knows.
The switch recognized the module and I tested all 4 ports in gigabit mode using GLC-SX-MM transceivers, all worked great. I have the SFP+'s in tengig1/1/1 and 1/1/2 as they should be. There are no other SFP's in the module either.
When I do a sho int tengig1/1/1 and 1/1/2 the media type doesn't show the transceiver that is installed like it does for the GLC-SX-MM ones. Maybe it's not supposed to or maybe it just doesn't recognize them and it's a hardware issue.

I have a requirement to connect two 3750 switch with 10G speed between two sites with 150km distance. We will lay-out our own fiber (48 core) between two sites. I just want to consult the following:
1. Could i use two core switch 6500 with single mode fiber as a transport equipment?
2. Or i need to use SDH equipment because of the distance concern? If so do i need a repeater?Could i use Cisco Metro Core ONS, which one?
3. Any other option to achieve this requirement?

I want to connect a Cisco small business switch (sf302-8) to a Cisco catalyst 2960S over a multi mode fiber. The transceiver I am using in the catalyst is a GLC-SX-MM. I presume in the SF302, I will have to use a MGBSX1. My question is "are these transceiver compatible with each other and if not, is there a transceiver that will suit both pieces of hardware?

Company I work for just moved into a new location. We have two data closets which are patched as independent entities, with no Ethernet tie connection. These closets are roughly 100 feet apart.
There is a fiber connection that runs between both closets, that the previous tenant used to connect the switches. I have placed a Cisco 2960 switch in each location, and added one mini SFP gbic's to each switch. After attaching both sides, neither light up. I do a sh inter gig1/0/49 on each and shows 'down down' (not admin down).
What is the trick on getting these to communciate, do I need to configure these ports, and are they supposed to light up?
What I am trying to accomplish is to get the one closet that is completely cut off, communicating by logically stacking, or 'daisy chaining' via fiber.
I turned off the lights and popped the fiber out, and I do see a faint red light (I did not look straight into it), so I think the fiber is active.

I need to connect 4 Floor Building with 4 Cisco 2960 - 48 ports switch each other and it needs to be through a fiber. So all PCs connected to each switch would reach the LAN/WAN from the other switch. (attached is the image here with)
I see that the 2960 has 2 SFP ports each port of each switch should connect each other or how?
My simple question is:
1. What cable / patch code I have to use = Single-mode or Multimode? ( distance for each switch will not more then 25 mts)
2. Do I have to use SFP or SFP+ module?
3. What kind of SFP/SFP+ module I have to use = Single-mode or Multimode?
4. What kind of connector should patch code have = LC / SC or ?
5. How to connect each switch with redundancy like ...each switch should be interconnected with each other or I have to choose Cisco 3750G which has more then 2 SFP ports (option#1 & opetion#2 = attached here with) =
Best practice for connecting cisco switches over fiber.

Is there a way to prevent resetting catalyst config by pressing and holding in the MODE button after powerup? I had entered in a basic config into my switch including passwords, etc. and was checking out different uses of the MODE button including setting the switch into express mode and I somehow managed to wipe the config and send the switch back into a default state by holding the mode button in for too long.
I want to prevent this from happening once the switch it is in production.
Not sure if it matters, but this is the 24 S model using the LAN lite image..

How can I configure Cisco 200 (SG200-08P) to learn Voice VLAN and CoS/DSCP from upstreamCatalyst 2960?
The Cat 2960 is today used together with LLDP-MED to announce config to Aastra IP Telephones. In some cases I need to use a small switch inbetween and plan to use the Cisco SG200-08P for this. However, I would like to avoid manual config of the Cisco 200 switch.

I have 2 devices which need to communicate through Logical Link Control. Each device functions like this: they have a built in network switch that allows their internal components to communicate with TCP/IP which is then encapsulated inside LLC frames and sent out a special port. The LLC frames from each device all come from a single source MAC address and are broadcast out the network. The receiving deivce receives the LLC frames, unencapsulates the data and uses it directly.
Using it this way through a single 2960 (such that device 1 is connected to fa0/2 and device 2 is connected to fa0/23) with its own dedicated VLAN and no other traffic on the switch (all other ports shutdown), the two devices are unable to "connect". Using a SPAN session, I can clearly see them exchanging LLC frames, but if I connect my computer to the internal device switch and try to ping the other device through the LLC encapsulated link, I get anywhere from a 25% to 100% loss with response times between 2ms and 15ms.
When I connect the special ports of each device together directly with a straight through cat-5e cable, they can connect and I can successfully ping through the link with sub-millisecond response times. The same goes if I connect them through an old unmanaged Linksys switch. I have toggled everything on the 2960 I can think of, including STP, CDP, LLDP, storm control, keepalives, IGMP snooping, management interface VLAN1, and QoS. In general, the more of those that I turned off, the faster the ping responses became, but nothing seems to stop the data loss.

I am trying to get QoS for my VoIP system setup on several SGE2000p switches and have got a question...How do I define the ACL for RTP? As far as I can tell it will not let me enter a UDP port range for the RTP traffic... And I cant imagine creating rules for each port would be very effective either. So, how can I define an ACL to cover the RTP traffic so I can classify it?

We have a potential new customer who is wanting to deploy a guest WLAN. I am happy doing this via a VLAN on the WAP4410N series AP’s. I would then create the relevant VLAN’s on the switch. Can each VLAN be assigned an IP address and allowing me to be able to add a static route on the router pointing the traffic for the Guest VLAN back to the switch?

I've got multiple SGE2000P & SGE2010P switches
Originally I was happy just set them all up in a stacked ring configuration. However I've become aware that my back bone fibre links are contantly pushed to their max.
So I've decided that I should change this configuration and unstack the switches and make them all stand-alone units. and I'll configure 2 cable LAG links between all my switches Theorically I should now get 2GIGs between each switch and to complete the ring in my network for redundancy I'll turn on Spanning tree.
However I've tested the speed and I just can not seem to get a LAG connection with 2 x 1gig cables to push more data than a single link 1gig link cable would.
My test enviroment(not using fibre optic cables just cat5e copper cabling):
4 x pc's(all gigabit network cards)
2 x sge2000p switches
PC1 ---(1G eth)--- /---(1G eth)--- PC2
[SGE2000P]===(LAG1 2x1G cables)===[SGE2000P]
PC3 ---(1G eth)---/ ---(1G eth)--- PC4
If I send files from PC1 & PC3 simultaneously to PC2 & PC4 They don't transfer faster than if I I just use a single 1GIG Link cable
looking at the LAG configuration it shows both cables are connected & the LAG looks like it's working. But it really doesn't seem to be running at the expected 2GIG?
The LAG fail over seems to work fine if I remove either of the 2 cables from the LAG the link continues to work. (sometimes it will drop a ping when removing or readding a LAG cable)

I'm planning to separate voice and data traffic with two vlans. I have a COR switch catalyst 3750, a UC560 for VOIP with SIP trunk and SGE2000P as access switches. The thing is i had configured VLAN1 (data vlan) and VLAN8 (voice vlan), i've created the vlan 8 in the database on 3750 and let pass those vlans through a TRUNK port. In the SGE2000P configuration i've created the VLAN8 and the the ports as trunk for letting pass the two vlans for the PC and the IP phone. This works but some phones aren't registering, and for example i've unplugged a register phone and plug and doesn't registering anymore.
