Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4506 / 6506 - Multicast Routing

Mar 8, 2013

I am configuring multicast in a environment where I have a 4506 at each site (4 total) and a 6506 as the core. Each 4506 is connected via layer 3 to the 6506. I have a mix of 3560s, 3548s, and 2960s connected to the 4506s and the 6506 via layer 2 trunk

I have multiple multicast sources and hosts communicating at a time (multiple cameras sending video / multiple computers receiving video).  So this is not a scenario where there is 1 sender and many receivers.  This would be many senders (~50) and some receivers (~10)

Sample Diagram:

->3560
|
6506 --> 4506 --> 3548
|   |
|    --> 2960
|
4506 --> 2960
|
-->3548

I configured ip multicast-routing on each of the 4506s and on the 6506. IGMP snooping is on by default on the 3560 and 2960 switches. CGMP is on by default on the 3548 switches.

I set up PIM sparse-dense mode and IGMP version 3 on each of the layer 3 interfaces for the 4506s and 6506 where they connect and on each VLAN that is sending or receiving multicast. Multicast is working throughout the network, however I am looking to verify the configuration as I scale this out to more clients on the network.

#1 - Is it correct to us sparse-dense mode in this configuration?

#2 - Do I need to configure a rendezvous points using AUTO-RP? (ip pim send-rp-announce INTERFACE scope TTL). Not sure here if I need to designate this and what to choose.  Right now I do not have this and it is working, but documentation seems to infer that I need to designate this.

#3 - Is there any other configuration settings I should be considering?  I hard to find real world configurations of multicast as examples or people that know multicast routing well.

D-Link DIR-655 :: Firmware Update Improve Performance?

Jan 22, 2012

I read the sticky related to firmware updates.  I have a DIR-655, that has been been giving me good service for quite a few years.  I subscribe to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy as I have managed to keep my home network and computers running over the years, but I'm not knowledgable in these matters.  I am still running firmware 1.10, and have not wanted to take a chance that if I upgraded I would find myself with numerous devices with no connectivity (running mix of Mac and PC desktops and laptops, XBox, Wii, Roku box, numerous iPhones and iPods, LG TV, and an iPad).

Recently I moved to the cable company phone, and they added a new modem.  They have it set as a gateway (I think that is the terminology), and my network works basically as it did before.  I have noticed though, that my Roku box, laptops, and skype on my Mac desktop seem to be having periods of slower download (Roku box), skype choppiness, and download that stop.  I was thinking that perhaps if I upgraded the firmware, my performance might improve.  After reading the sticky, it seems like firmware may not be the answer.  This is a reliable but older piece of equipment, and now I'm thinking that I just need to upgrade to a newer and perhaps more advanced router.

Belkin Routers :: F5d7230-4 / Would Updating Wireless G Improve Performance

Jan 29, 2013

I'm using a wireless g router (f5d7230-4) which for most purposes is fine? Specifically: 1. I can't seem to stream media content from my windows 7 pc to my lg tv (model 55 lw 6500), and wonder if the age of the router is part of the problem; 2. some iptv channels on my ps3 are slow to load menus, though programs run fine when I push play (I gather ps3 is restricted to wireless g but if I upgraded the router I would plug in the ps3 using cat6). When I speed test my internet connection I'll typically get results around 2.5-5 Mbps. I'm impressed that a router of this age performs so well it isn't obvious to me that upgrading will improve the setup.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E1200 - Constant Instability / How To Improve Performance

Oct 9, 2012

I've recently acquired a Linksys E1200 router--which is more than a week old--from the recommendation of a friend of mine. The service is great and all, but the one thing that frequently bothers me is the seeming constant instability of my router's model. There are moments when the router performs smoothly, but there is as much an instance because the router doesn't seem to work at all even when the lights (and the accompanying connection) on my modem seem to be working in good order.

I know that a router will always have its problems, but this is really a constant problem with the E1200; and if so, if there's any way possible on how I can be able to "stabilize" the said router's performance.

Cisco WAN :: 4948 / 6509 / 2960 - How To Implement Multicast On Network

Aug 4, 2011

We want to implement multicast on our network. We are going to use for  online teaching purpose. I am very new at Multicast and not have much  idea about it. We are not running any routing protocol in our network,  only static route. The multicast server is located at One of our office  and it is connected with L2 (Cisco 2960) switch, L2 switch is connected  to L3 switch(Cisco 4948). L3(Cisco 4948) and Core Switch(Cisco 6509)  with FWSM are connected with E-3 link with tunnel. Router 1 and Router 2  are connected with P2P ILL links which are terminated at serial  interface. The Multicast Server IP is 192.168.2.131/25. The scenario of  our network are mentioned below:

Multicast  Server--->(L2 Switch)--->(L3 Switch)--->(Core  Switch)--->(FWSM)--->(Router 1)---->(Router 2)--->(L2  Switch)--->(Multicast Client)

 We  have created a seprate vlan (i.e. vlan 102,   interface IP is 192.168.2.129/25) for multicast at L3 switch, enable  multicast routing, defined rp-address(i.e. 192.168.2.129/25), enable  sparse-dense mode at multicast vlan as well as at some other vlan also  for testing purpose and joined multicast group (i.e. Multicast IP is  224.3.3.5). At core switch we have also enabled multicast routing,  defined rp-address (i.e. 19.268.2.129/25), enable sparse-dense mode at  user vlan and inside vlan of FWSM and joined multicast group at user  vlan and inside vlan. At FWSM we have enabled multicast routing, defined  rp-address(192.168.2.129), doesn’t find any option to enable  sparse-dense mode and joined Multicast group at inside vlan and router 1  vlan. At Router 1, we have configured the same thing. We have  configured mroute at all the devices. We are able to ping from end to  end. We are testing multicast by Multicast IP checker tool (provided by  vendor). Multicast is working fine at L2 switch, L3 switch and Core  Switch, but not from Router 1. Ping is reachable from Router 1. After  doing mtrace at Router 1, the following output has come:

Router 1 (Mtrace with destination address 192.168.2.131)
mtrace 172.21.15.2 192.168.2.131 224.3.3.5

Type escape sequence to abort.
Mtrace from 172.21.254.50 to 192.168.2.131 via group 224.3.3.5
From source (?) to destination (?)
[Code] .....

If , we do mtrace from gateway IP address(i.e. 192.168.2.129) as  destination address then mtrace is getting completed, but if mtrace is  done from Mutlicast server IP address(192.168.2.131) as destination  address, then mtrace is not getting completed.

  We  have connected one laptop at Router 1 vlan to test Multicast. The host,  which is connected to Router 1 vlan is able to send multicast packet to  other host and other host at different vlan are receiving it , but it’s  unable to receive multicast packet send by other host of different vlan.

Do I need to enable igmp snooping at L2 switch, L3 switch and Core Switch ? I am not able to understand or can't figure out where i have configured wrong.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 650x How To Improve Link Failure

Jan 27, 2013

I have implemented in my company network recommended by cisco scheme with MEC etherchannel from some segment distribution layer (VSS) to core switches (legacy 650x) exactly as on picture: Core switches  have rather old  IOS (Version 12.2(33)SRB4 and i have reasons not to upgrade it now) which dont support many functions - like BFD over Etherchannels and Enhanced PAgP. And we run a OSPF/MP-BGP/MPLS bunch over those links with OSPF reference bandwidth configured to such values that failure of one link in etherchannel will not lead to link cost changes (we dont have a lot of traffic for now on those links and 1 link can handle it easily) and consequently will not trigger changes to RIB and BGP topology table.

Problem is that i am afraid that in case of one of link of portchannel will fail (but without port down event - unidirectional link or smth else) it will take rather long time to converge - and im talking about L2, not L3 protocols. Cos i cant implement BFD and ePaGP over this link - best i can do that improve 30 seconds PAgP hello timer to 1 second. But at least 3 seconds of possible traffic blackholed - is rather big problem.First time i considered 2 possible solutions:

1) BFD - but even i can use it, it will not improve much recovery time cos 750 ms for BFD over etherchannel not much better that 1 second PaGP fast timer.

2) ePAgP - as i understand this protocol have enhancements to discover failed link faster and improve recovery time, but all information i can find about it - is how to use it for dual active detection and none about timers improvements. So i cant be sure that i should upgrade IOS on Core switches and it will improve my failure detection time. ( if it possible adduce some links to description of this protocol enhancements in comparison with PAGP)

For now im already thinking about using four L3 links (instead of 2 portchannels) and BFD over those links with 50 ms hello timer. But in case of link failure reconvergence of OSPF will take some time, and BGP will react to this no immediately, so i am afraid that even using aggressive timers for routing processes and hellos i will not win much time.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Catalyst 4506 / Routing For Internal And Guest Network

Dec 19, 2011

I am implementing a guest wireless network to work alongside my internal network. The guest network will use the existing switching network and will be separated by VLANs. I have the ASA set so that traffic can get to it and out to the Internet. I can set up a workstation on the same VLAN as my guest network and can route inside my network (strictly doing this for testing purposes). Where I am having problems is with the Catalyst 4506 switches and the ip routing. I had two separate "ip route" statements defined on my switches.

ip route 10.200.2.0 255.255.255.0 10.200.2.254
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.100.100.254

I have discovered that the traffic is always following the default route despite the fact that my IP address on my test workstation falls in the 10.200.2.x network.  I was looking at documentation and found that it is possible to set up policy-based routing on the core switches. Can you have two "ip route" statements defined like this to segreate traffic or do I have to use PBR for routing (or a combination) in this case? If I define PBR then how does that impact my existing routing? I need to make sure that I can still route the existing traffic while I'm configuring this change.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4506 Resilient Routing Design With OSPF

Aug 27, 2012

We have 2 sites, each with 2 x 4506 switches which will be connected togther using an etherchannel. The switches will provide access ports for client devices and will be configured with HSRP to provide gateway redundancy. SW1 will be HSRP active.2 metro ethernet links will be installed in each site which will connect back to our HQ sites. OSPF will be used over the backbone to provide resiliency and to allow shortest path routing to each HQ and to prevent traffic over the HQ to HQ link.

The 4506 will be trunked togther with an SVI for providing OSFP adjacency.For the traffic flow from SW2 to HQ2, traffic will hit SW1 and then route back to SW2 and then to HQ2. Is this the best way to do this? Should a second link be connected between switches just for routing or should something like GLBP be used?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4506 Connecting Switches Together With IP Routing

Aug 31, 2012

CiscoSwitch1(4506) has 3 VLANs(12,13,14) and Switch2(4948) has 3 different VLANs(22,23,24) and IP routing has been enabled in both switches with SVI interfaces for each vlan. intervlan routing is works fine.Now there is a requirement to connect these switches together. Vlan 12 on the Cisco switch 4506 has to be made available from vlan 22 from Switch2(4948).  basically Vlan 12 is having a multicast source (225.0.0.0 & 226.0.0.0) which should be accessabile from vlan 22 of  cisco switch 4948.I got 2 ideas

1)  Create a trunk between these switches and configure L2 vlan(12) in cisco 4948...i know theoritically it should work but what my concern is Ip routing enabled in both switches will it create any issues? is it a gud solution to this requirement?

2) Create a separate IP network on the ports connecting to both switches and set up routes to the networks.ex- console(config)#ip route 192.168.10.10 255.255.255.0 192.168.20.1.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3560 Implement DHCP Snooping

Oct 12, 2011

I have attempted to implement DHCP snooping and have been having some strange issues. I have 5 3560s taht I use for my edge and when I attempt to implement on all five, the VLAN that houses my voice data appears to no longer be able to recieve DHCP lease renewals so after the 24 expiration all of my phones lose their configs. Once I roll back the changes the voice VLAN comes back. The other VLANs seem to function correctly as theya re able to renew their DHCP addresses.

The 3560s tie into each other using GIG Ports 1 & 2 and the top and bottom switches tie into our core switch, a 4507. The config that I use is below, failry simple and straightforward.

4 of the 5 switches feed our general office vlans for voice and data however the 5th switch is there for expansion and not in use. As such I have left the config changes in place on it and have tied myself and a colleague into it and have been operating fine for over a week now. So the config that I use seems sound in theory and should work on the other 4 switches with no issue.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: PXE Failing With DHCP On 4506?

Jun 11, 2012

We are attempting to PXE boot from clients obtaining their DHCP lease information from DHCP pools configured on our 4506.  The PXE server, and the client are configured in separate VLANs.  We have configured option 66 to point to the PXE server IP address, and the bootfile option to point to the PXE boot configuration filename.  On the client side SVI, we also have configured the ip helper-address command to point to the PXE server (which also acts as another DHCP server for redundancy).

The PXE boot continuously fails stating it is unable to find the configuration file.  If we remove the DHCP pool from the 4506, and allow the client to receive their DHCP lease info from the secondary server (Windows 2k8 - same server as PXE server), they PXE boot with no issues.

We have no problem obtaining DHCP info, just completion of the PXE process.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Implement ASA 5510 / 5505 For Existing IP Block

Jun 5, 2012

some recommendations for product selection and overall infrastructure setup for our datacenter:  We have an old, legacy setup, and are looking to replace equipment, improve performance, enhance security, and implement hardware redundancy (if cost effective).

1)  We now have (2) IP blocks from our provider, and need to support both (because we have mailers on older IPs with a good reputation rating).
2)  We have (2) aged Sonicwalls, one for each IP block, each connects to multiple internal subnets (some internal subnets need connectivity to eachother, some don't).
3)  We have (mostly) public facing web servers (Linux/Apache), as well as database servers (with no external access).

Questions-

1)  Should we implement a Cisco ASA 5520 w/ or w/o SSM modules for the new IP block (for webservers)?
1a)  Should we implement a Cisco ASA 5510 or 5505 for the existing IP block (for mailers)?
1b)  Or, can we have multiple public IP blocks connected to a single ASA 5520 (or 2 ASA's w/ failover)?
2)  Can we connect both firewalls (5520 and 5510/5505) to a single Catalyst 3550 (or similar) using VLANs, and have 6 - 10 VLANs for webserver subnets, with ACLs controlling which subnets/servers can connect to eachother?
2a)  Should we implement a second Catalyst 3550 (or similar) for redundancy (webservers have multiple network cards).
3)  From our provider, we only have (1) dmark which both IP blocks connect through.  Currently we have a switch connected to the dmark in order to 'splice' the connection, and have both existing firewalls connected.  Is there a better approach to this?
4)  We would like to implement SSL-VPN, and possibly site to site IPSec VPN, but only if there will not be significant performance degredation.
5)  Other thoughts/recommendations for new features, enhanced security, or redundancy?
