Cisco Switching/Routing :: Relay Agent And Forwarding Query On 2960?

Nov 23, 2011

I need support on understanding and configuring dhcp relay agent And forwarding. Lets say a bunch of TCP/IP devices required a dhcp ip where it is installed on a perticular server to run so. The server having dhcp pool where it provide the devices with IP addresses as he recieve queries from them requesting to release their addresses. On 2960 switch no dhcp configured and ports assigned under specific vlan under those devices. The issue here, if power goes down and booting process started, the devices started to ask the server for ip add and it takes too much time and somehow it does not take ip and those request kind a dropped. As the minimum requirement is to configure relay agent on the switch and forwarding and multicast?

Cisco WAN :: 2960 Network Design Query

Aug 22, 2011

I am in the process of planning our new network. Our business is changing from hosting its own data centre, to moving it to a professional facility. We have 120 users, over 100 servers (physical and virtual) and three sites (main premise, data centre, dr site). The new network will connect all three. Our new WAN links are almost ordered. We will be making use of a managed MPLS IP VPN, with a 100M access rate at each site. I am currently focusing on the desing of the network at the main business premise. We have a significant investment in Cisco 2960 & 3750 switches and Fortinet firewall appliances. I plan to re-use these in the design.

Our current LAN is very flat and I want to segment the network. My plan is to create a number of VLANs, enable the Inter VLAN routing on the 3750 and then attach the 3750 to the Fortinet appliance which will provide stateful firewalling and traffic policin based on the VLAN (subnet) addresses. It is important that the traffic be routed as quickly as possible from this site to our prod and dr data centres.The 2960's act as the access layer, the 3750 as the distribution layer. The 2960's will connect via port channels (layer 2) to the 3750's and the VLAN interfaces will be configured on the 3750.

I was then planning on creating a VLAN on the 3750 to connect to the Fortigate appliance with a /29 address to limit the addresses used whilst also providing some flexibility for any future design changes.I want to implement a little security between the VLANs on the 3750 switches. I have a question about this coming up.I then plan to use the Fortigate appliance to do basic traffic policing based on source/destination addresses.

The WAN routers will connect to the Fortinet appliance on a Gigabit copper interface. The WAN routers will run HSRP between themselves and only one router will be active at any one time. The failover will be managed by the Fortigate and Cisco routers.I plan to define those addresses hosted at the other data centres and associate them with the interface associated with the WAN.I will then define the routing on the firewall for the two other data centres through summary routes for each of the sites. We will run static routing from the Cisco 3750 to the Fortigate and Fortigate to WAN router. We have no other networks/sites and won't have any others in the future.

I would like to be able to query the dot1dStpPortState obect on the Catalyst 2960-S on our LAN . Cisco Switching/Routing :: DNS Query Fails Behind DHCP / NAT - Router ISR 861

Nov 18, 2012

in my simple network setup, I cannot resolve DNS queries from inside my NATted network. On the router I can ping both IP-addresses and names. Ping from the  local machine works for IP-Adresses but not for names. When doing nslookup, addresses are not found and a SERVFAIL  message is returned. I use a Cisco ISR 861 Router to connect our local LAN to the Internet (The WAN of the 861 is connected to another DHCP/NAT-Router, which in turn connects to the ISP-Modem). Addresses in the local LAN are DHCP-distributed, the DNS-Servers from my ISP are configured on the Router and the DNS-Information is distributed correctly to my local LAN machines (as I can verify by doing nslookup on Linux).

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 5548 Nexus 5K And 2K - Ports Configuration Query

Feb 16, 2013

I have two 5548s as core. 8 FEXs are multihomed (advanced vPC topology?) to both the cores.Suppose, I have to configure a bunch of ports on the FEXs, say Eth101/1/10 - 20. I would login to the first core and apply the configs.

My question is - do I have to do the same on the second core also? Or would the first core replicate the stuff to the second core? I know about port-profiles/CFS and such. But, without that would it automatically sync to second core?

For testing purpose, I went to Core 1 Eth101/1/10 and put a description "TEST". Wrote the config. After 5 minutes logged into second core and did show run Eth101/1/10. But, the description "TEST" didn't show up there.

Also, doing sh run on any FEX port is faster on one of the cores and very slow on second core... all the FEXs have 20 GB uplink to core 1 & 2 (so total 40GB in vPC, max pinning 1)

Cisco VPN :: 880 / 1800 / 2960 - DHCP Relay Through IPSEC VPN Tunnel

Mar 11, 2011

Here is the high-level question, please only respond if you have a conclusive answer with documentation to back it up. It seems simple, but all my research on forums and things have been confusing and conflicting.

When "ip helper-address" is used to enable the dhcp-relay function, will the DHCP packets get relayed through the VPN tunnel (if thats where the DHCP server is?)  This question applies to Cisco IOS Routers and VPN appliances which have a Site-to-Site IPSEC VPN Tunnel to a place that hosts a DHCP server.

I'm using the Cisco 880 and 1800 series routers.  I've already got DHCP relaying through IPSEC tunnels, but so far I've only set it up where my 2960 switch relays the DHCP messages to the VPN router on site (which is a separate device). I want to know if the router can pickup and relay through it's own tunnel natively.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2821 Multicast Routing Relay Basic

Mar 12, 2013

I  start configuring Cisco 2821 router for multicast . First short  description and attached sheme explanation. Let we say  I have small  network with 100 users. One router and Cisco switch 3560. Two VLAN’s,  one for data another for multicast. Data from internet works fine but  now I want to connect multicast servers (or source of more multicast  streams) from another subnet. Router have three interfaces.I expect there should be no problems with multicast configuration, but unfortunately it is not like I expect. What I did ?

First step:  enable multicast routing

Second step: on both interfaces (Fe 0/1 and Fe 0/2)  - ip pim sparse-mode

Third step: configure switch that users are connected to access port in VLAN 222 (temporary to see if multicast work)

When  I start VLC on computer nothing happend. If I try to connect computer  on same subnet where is source of multicast streams it works fine.What  I am doing wrong ? Is there anything about routing ? All subnets are  directly connected. RP is not needed if I have one router or ?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: N7Ks / DHCP Relay On NX-OS?

Nov 30, 2011

I am trying to get an understanding of some behaviour I am seeing on my N7Ks regarding DHCP relay.I have two identically configured Vlans interfaces both configured with the same two dhcp relay servers in the same order. The only difference between the two vlans is that one is HSRP active on the A side switch and the other is active on B side switch. All clients in Vlan136 (active on B side) are getting DHCP leases from the first of the two dhcp relay servers configured while all clients on Vlan 137 (active on A side) are getting DHCP leases from the second of the two dhcp relay servers. I would expect that all clients on both vlans would get leases from the first relay server configured unless that device was unavailable.

1. My questions are when there is power-supply faulty, the Minor Relay Connctor (right picture) will be short-circuited, right?

2. If we connector the two ports (ports 4 & 5 at the left picture) with a normal cable to drive an Alram Bell (in short-circuiled or closed loop situation), do we need an external power supply to the Alram Bell? Or there will be power supply from Catalyst 2955 to the Alram Bell as well?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: TR50 - Priority Queuing Of Packets On Frame Relay Subinterface

Nov 13, 2011

I need to get some low volume, interactive data, prioritized on frame relay PVCs across our network. I have followed the CBWFQ examples from cisco.com, but my test packets are still showing latency over 1 second. My lab set up has a corporate connected gateway router linked via FE to testrouter 50. TR51 has a T1 frame relay loop to another router acting as a frame relay switch. The other side of the FR switch has a 56k link to  testrouter51. I am sourcing test pings from my desktop PC, that are marked as AF43, and leave at a rate of 1/second, when the response comes back in time. I am using a Smartbits to generate some default class traffic at a rate of about 56Kbps only in the 'outbound' direction, toward TR51, as this emulates a file copy from corporate to remote sites, that is causing the AF43 traffic to suffer. Here is the relevant config on the TR50 device:

class-map match-all rtu-data
match ip dscp af43
!
policy-map frame-56
class rtu-data

The trunk lines are configured and working and I have assigned ip addresses to each of the Vlan interfaces on the 3750. I only have 3 vlans on the 3750 that have hosts directly connected (vlans 2, 10 and 40) the other vlans ( 20 and 70) don't have any clients plugged into them on the 3750 but the hosts reside on 2 different 2960s that connect via trunk ports. How do I keep the vlan interface on the 3750 switch pingable when I don't have hosts directly connected in that vlan on the 3750? (yes, I have enabled ip routing on the 3750)

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2960 / SG 300 Switch - VoIP Setup - Asymmetric Routing Not Working

May 21, 2013

I have a Cisco SG 300-20 as the core switch, layer 3. It is 192.168.4.6 on VLAN1 and 192.168.5.1 for VLAN2 (VOIP). All the ports are set in trunk mode. DHCP relay is setup on this switch.

The phones connected into a layer 2, Catalyst 2960-S switch. All ports are set in trunk mode. Default gateway on it is set to 192.168.5.1.

DHCP for both VLANs is provided by a Windows Server 2008 R2 server (the relay IP 192.168.4.15).

There is also an ASA 5510 in the mix which is 192.168.4.1. It has a route added to it for the 192.168.5.0 network to go to the SG 300 (192.168.5.1).

Just the two switches can ping each other on the 192.168.5.x network when I "add vlan 2" to the trunk port that is connected between the SG 300 and the 2960. The phones don't get DHCP on the 2960 switch. And I cannot ping 192.168.5.x from the ASA or anything else on the 192.168.4.x network.

After a bit of reading on intra-vlan routing for the SG 300 switch, I am thinking the SG 300 has to be the "center" of things so I need to make it 192.168.4.1 to be the gateway for both VLANs and change the ASA to 192.168.4.2 for VLAN1, etc. And I really can't do asymmetric routing with this switch.
