Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2821 Multicast Routing Relay Basic
Mar 12, 2013
I start configuring Cisco 2821 router for multicast . First short description and attached sheme explanation. Let we say I have small network with 100 users. One router and Cisco switch 3560. Two VLAN’s, one for data another for multicast. Data from internet works fine but now I want to connect multicast servers (or source of more multicast streams) from another subnet. Router have three interfaces.I expect there should be no problems with multicast configuration, but unfortunately it is not like I expect. What I did ?
First step: enable multicast routing
Second step: on both interfaces (Fe 0/1 and Fe 0/2) - ip pim sparse-mode
Third step: configure switch that users are connected to access port in VLAN 222 (temporary to see if multicast work)
When I start VLC on computer nothing happend. If I try to connect computer on same subnet where is source of multicast streams it works fine.What I am doing wrong ? Is there anything about routing ? All subnets are directly connected. RP is not needed if I have one router or ?

We've got a cisco 2821 router which periodically stops routing all traffic. It seems to happen about once every 2 weeks, and I can't find anything that could be causing it. There are no entries in the log and the router stays up and running but requires a restart to begin processing traffic again. We're running 12.4(13r)T11.Any thoughts, or troubleshooting steps to track this down?

I have just bought myself a Cisco 2821 ISR.At present in my home I have a Cisco 2621XM. Fast Ethernet 0/0 is connected to a 3524XL as a trunk to provide my LAN with inter-vlan routing. it works great. Fast Ethernet 0/1 is connected to my ISP's cable modem and uses the command "Ip address dhcp" to get an IP and all other info from my ISP.FA 0/1 is Ip nat outside and the FA 0/0 and all sub interface like 0/0.1 .24 .168 etc all ip nat inside.I get intervlan routing and access to the internet via this router.I have this 2821 to replace the 2621XM as I plan to run CME on it and want gigabit routing on my vlans as at the moment on the 2621 routing between vlans it at half duplex or seems to be.I have configured the 2821 to ip nat outside on gig 0/0 and ip nat inside on gig 0/1 and all of the sub interfaces (same setup as my 2621 but with gig ethernet)I have no access to the internet at all but I can ping www.google.co.uk and other domain names from the terminal session when I am connected to the 2821 via the console or telnet/SSH. the gig 0/0 has an IP assigned from my ISP too but no other nodes on the network can ping outside.Am I missing something here? the version of IOS is V 15.
My access list goes someting like
access-list 1 permit 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255
access-list 1 permit 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255
access-list 100 permit ip 10.0.0.0 0.255.255.255 any
access-list 100 permit ip 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255 any
and so on
I still cannot access the internet.....

I have a problem on my catalyst 6509 on which I would like to do the following things :
I have some Vlans in which multicast is enabled.
In tose Vlan theres is a router which is default router for equipements.
I had enabled multicast routing because some Vlan needs to exchange multicast informations, but I wolud like to make difference between Multicast traffic. For example I have 5 vlans:
Vlan 1 and 2 need to exchange Multicast informations but the don't need multicast information from Vlan 3 and 4
Vlan 3 and 5 need to exchange Multicast informations but the don't need multicast information from Vlan 1 and 2
Vlan 5 is independant Vlan but doesn't need to have multicast information from all others vlan.
Last problem, equipement on differents vlan can use the same Mulkticast group address. In this case, Multicast routing is not working between Vlan 1 to Vlan 2 and Vlan 3 to Vlan 4.

I am configuring multicast in a environment where I have a 4506 at each site (4 total) and a 6506 as the core. Each 4506 is connected via layer 3 to the 6506. I have a mix of 3560s, 3548s, and 2960s connected to the 4506s and the 6506 via layer 2 trunk
I have multiple multicast sources and hosts communicating at a time (multiple cameras sending video / multiple computers receiving video). So this is not a scenario where there is 1 sender and many receivers. This would be many senders (~50) and some receivers (~10)
Sample Diagram:
->3560
|
6506 --> 4506 --> 3548
| |
| --> 2960
|
4506 --> 2960
|
-->3548
I configured ip multicast-routing on each of the 4506s and on the 6506. IGMP snooping is on by default on the 3560 and 2960 switches. CGMP is on by default on the 3548 switches.
I set up PIM sparse-dense mode and IGMP version 3 on each of the layer 3 interfaces for the 4506s and 6506 where they connect and on each VLAN that is sending or receiving multicast. Multicast is working throughout the network, however I am looking to verify the configuration as I scale this out to more clients on the network.
#1 - Is it correct to us sparse-dense mode in this configuration?
#2 - Do I need to configure a rendezvous points using AUTO-RP? (ip pim send-rp-announce INTERFACE scope TTL). Not sure here if I need to designate this and what to choose. Right now I do not have this and it is working, but documentation seems to infer that I need to designate this.
#3 - Is there any other configuration settings I should be considering? I hard to find real world configurations of multicast as examples or people that know multicast routing well.

I would like test multicast routing with cisco1801.i create 2 Vlan. Vlan 200 (192.168.200.x) affect Fastethernet 1, Vlan 130 (192.168.130.x) Fastethernet 5.
Version IOS is : adipservice-k9 124-9.t1
ip multicast-routing
#int Vlan 130
ip address 192.168.130.254 255.255.255.0
Ip pim dense-mode
#int Vlan 200
Ip address 192.168.200.254 255.255.255.0
Ip pim dense-mode
I used VLC for my test.When i connect source (224.10.10.10) and recever ( Udp://@224.10.10.10:1234), that's ok!But, source is on the Vlan 200 and reicever on the Vlan 130, is not good!I test with "sparse-mode", i have same problem.

I’ve been trying a few days now to implement multicast routing on my home network in order to make airplay work between subnets. Specifically between an iphone and a hifi separated by different vlans. Failed, as I have no experience in multicast routing. we have a clean configuration and simple network which consists of two SVIs
Vlan 10: 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
Vlan 20: 192.168.2.0 255.255.255.0

I have a Cisco 2821 Router. Its ethernet Interface(E1) is connected to an ISP's Gateway.The outside interface IP is 207.x.x.1, The ISP has given 6 public IPs (202.x.x.1- 202.x.x.6) to use in LAN.
I have configured the router`s Internal Interface(E0) with a public IP address. (i.e. 202.x.x.1)
My Internal LAN PCs are in a private range of 192.168.1.0/24 subnet. Now I wanted my PC users to access the Internet while the Routers public IP remains on internal interface. How can I do the same?

We currently have 7 Cisco 3524-XL switches (10-12+ yrs old) which are 10/100. We purchased a handful of Cisco 3750X switches to replace them going with the whole stackwise and redundant power supplies. Our current configuration on the old 3524 switches is that they have hardset all the ports on them to 100MB/FULL since devices would auto-neg to 100/Half. Since we're going from 10/100 to 10/100/1000 switches, I want things to auto-neg as I have heard in the past and experienced that things work better when it auto-neg to gigabit. My upper management is afraid since the old switches wouldn't auto-neg correctly that we should hard set all the ports on the new switches, which would be a nightmare since some ports would be hard set to 100/FULL others to 1000/FULL, etc.. We've tested just about all of our devices at auto with the switches and they've all auto-neg to the correct speed. In short, is Auto-Negotiation the way to go with the newer switches or is it still better practice to hard set your ports?

I am trying to configure the FE8 (WAN port) to connect to the Internet. We're swtiching ISP'ssoon so this router was set up at my office and has since been deployed at the client site. So far it is just plugged in and powered, with a console cable attached but no LAN cabling since this router will replace an existing one using the same addressing (except the WAN settings of course). So for now I am just focused on working on the WAN side since I have the ISP's cable modem attached . I had intiially used CP Express to config the wan port with an IP and mask and the various port forwarding options I intend to use. Now, connected via console cable, I tried pinging the IP of the wan port, which works. Beyond that, can't ping anyting (8.8.8.8 - a Google IP), also can't resovle any DNS names which makes sense with no apparent connectivity. Likely my config is just imcomplete. Nowhere in sh run do I see a Default Gateway, yet this ISP did specify one so I assume I need to enter it. Not sure what's the right way - I get confusing results on searches telling me either to use ip default-gateway or ip default-network. I want to think that it's as simple as entering in the IP but so far I've learned with the IOS that you never do anythign without knowing all the possible implications, which I don't. Also while I am at it, I don't know what I should have for DNS entries. This router will not be a DNS server for any internal systems that function will be managed by the two Windows 2008 R2 DNS machines. The ISP has also provided two IP's for their DNS servers. I thought it would be a simple matter of just adding two entrires via ip name-server command, which I did. So now I have four entries, first the two internal servers (inaccessible currently due to no LAN cabing to this router), and the two ISP servers. Can't ping those either, but again there's no default gateway.

First time user of cisco hardware and we just purchased the 4900m catalyst switch. My question is very general. I am simply hoping to network 3 servers together and I do not wish to do any fancy or advanced configuration. Can I simply use the web management interface for network administration and setup? I just downloaded the Catalyst 4500 Series Switch Cisco IOS software configuration guide and they talk about Cisco View network management system, is this my answer or is this what most people use for basic configuration and administration?

I' ve three 4900M switches equipped with the WS-X4920-GB-RJ45 module and the WS-X4908-10GE module. Now I'm started to setup these switches in our lab environment for the first time. They behave a little bit strange in comparison with the C3750 series which I used before and which I will replace by these powerful machines.
I tried to setup these switches to be managed through the management port. I configured IP address, default route in the management vrf, set the source-interface for tftp,ssh,ftp and tacacs to use the management port. Ping using the manangement port was successful. After finishing theses steps I configured the TACACS and AAA settings accordingly the informations I found on CCO. I tested the settings with "test aaa group authentication" command- without success. On my Cisco ACS no request was received and the switch told me he could't reach the tacacs server. Other switches in the same IP subnet are working without failure, so firewall or server should not be the problem.

I am trying to get an understanding of some behaviour I am seeing on my N7Ks regarding DHCP relay.I have two identically configured Vlans interfaces both configured with the same two dhcp relay servers in the same order. The only difference between the two vlans is that one is HSRP active on the A side switch and the other is active on B side switch. All clients in Vlan136 (active on B side) are getting DHCP leases from the first of the two dhcp relay servers configured while all clients on Vlan 137 (active on A side) are getting DHCP leases from the second of the two dhcp relay servers. I would expect that all clients on both vlans would get leases from the first relay server configured unless that device was unavailable.

I come across to use the Catalyst Switch 2955 and it has two Relay Connector with one Major (MAJ) and one Minor (MIN) as below picture.There is command line to trigger these two Relay Connectors. As below command to set the Relay Connector to minor for monitoring the power supply: alarm facility power-supply relay minor
1. My questions are when there is power-supply faulty, the Minor Relay Connctor (right picture) will be short-circuited, right?
2. If we connector the two ports (ports 4 & 5 at the left picture) with a normal cable to drive an Alram Bell (in short-circuiled or closed loop situation), do we need an external power supply to the Alram Bell? Or there will be power supply from Catalyst 2955 to the Alram Bell as well?

I need support on understanding and configuring dhcp relay agent And forwarding. Lets say a bunch of TCP/IP devices required a dhcp ip where it is installed on a perticular server to run so. The server having dhcp pool where it provide the devices with IP addresses as he recieve queries from them requesting to release their addresses. On 2960 switch no dhcp configured and ports assigned under specific vlan under those devices. The issue here, if power goes down and booting process started, the devices started to ask the server for ip add and it takes too much time and somehow it does not take ip and those request kind a dropped. As the minimum requirement is to configure relay agent on the switch and forwarding and multicast?

Static address assignment allows full network functionality. I enabled debug ip dhcp server packet. I need to get some low volume, interactive data, prioritized on frame relay PVCs across our network. I have followed the CBWFQ examples from cisco.com, but my test packets are still showing latency over 1 second. My lab set up has a corporate connected gateway router linked via FE to testrouter 50. TR51 has a T1 frame relay loop to another router acting as a frame relay switch. The other side of the FR switch has a 56k link to testrouter51. I am sourcing test pings from my desktop PC, that are marked as AF43, and leave at a rate of 1/second, when the response comes back in time. I am using a Smartbits to generate some default class traffic at a rate of about 56Kbps only in the 'outbound' direction, toward TR51, as this emulates a file copy from corporate to remote sites, that is causing the AF43 traffic to suffer. Here is the relevant config on the TR50 device:
class-map match-all rtu-data
match ip dscp af43
!
policy-map frame-56
class rtu-data
priority percent 20
class network-mgt-data
bandwidth percent 5(code)
