Cisco WAN :: 6500 Series Switch / Configured Port Channel On Both Switches With 2 Gig Interface
Jan 9, 2012
we have cisco 6500 series switch and configured port channel on both switches with 2 gig interfaces on both switches.
When we enable the port channel mode to as desirable to the interfaces on both side and applied the port channel to physical interfaces switch will go down and if we remove on any one side switch will come up. we have enabled globally the following commands. [code]

I has a issue about etherchannel beetwen 02 Catalyst 6500 switch, i need your comment about it. if you had any similar experience:
1.- On Catalyst Switch 6500-1: I configured interface port-channel 4 and associated it to G6/29 and G6/30 interface Port-channel4description IUU1_Gn1_HLIMSGSN01_Port_channel_6_29_6_30switchportswitchport trunk encapsulation dot1qswitchport trunk allowed vlan 406,408switchport mode trunkswitchport nonegotiatelogging event link-statusload-interval 30mls qos vlan-basedmls qos trust dscp!
2.- On Catalyst Switch 6500-2: I configured interface port-channel 4 and associated it to G6/29 and G6/30
interface Port-channel4
description IUU2_Gn2_HLIMSGSN01_Port_channel_6_29_6_30
switchport
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 407,409
[code]....
and i see output "show interface Po4A" up up on switch-1, "show interface Po4B" up up on switch-2
5.- In the show running-config not appear configured Po4A and Po4B. it only show on outputs
6.- Po4A and Po4 was not configured on neither switches, my question is why appear Po4A and Po4B on switch-1 and switch-2 respectively? and why Po4 appear in down down.
7.- I solved this issue by shutdown and not shutdown to the interfaces on both routers, currently all is OK.

Configured Layer 3 portchannel from 6500VSS enabled switch to two different 6500 standalone switch. Configured first ip on VSS switch, second ip on standalone switch1 and third IP on standalone switch2. My question is
1. Will the portchannel be up?
2. If port channel is up, will I able to ping the connected IP's.

I am testing rogue on wire using 5508 WLC and , I have a dedicated AP configured as rogue detector and configured the switch port where the Rogue detector is connected as trunk. I have plugged in an autonomous AP with open authentication to the same switch so that it can act as a rogue. On the WLC, I can see that Autonomous AP as rogue on Wire. But along with that I am seeing another AP as rogue on wire, even though i have plugged in only one Autonomous AP to the switch.

We have one cisco core switch 6500 series which was configured portchannel on several gig interfaces. This port is used as a trunk to enable communication between VLANs. The VLANs is where several high-end servers/hosts reside. After we disable / unbind the portchannel, the port turns amber. The following is what we did on the interface
1-no switchport command
2- make the port as access mode #switchport mode access
3- shut and no shut
4- clear arp
5- clear mac
what else can we do on that particular interface. It is just on that particular interface, the rest are ok.

I found the following on the link bundling page for the 12000 series router:"In both EtherChannel and POS channel link bundles, the Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) for signalling and the 802.3ad protocol for automatic negotiation of the channel are not supported. This means that in order for the channel between two routers to be active, you must disable signaling on switches (such as the Cisco 6500/7600 Series) in the channel, and configure the switches in ON mode."
So, my question is, if lacp isn't supported, is there another way to mimic its functionality on a 12000 series router? I want to connect 2 routers together with a port channel that will pass through our layer 2 network, and I want to make sure that any failures in the path will shut down the affected link on both routers.

I have a pair of 6500's setup with VSS and there is currently only one link between then. However one end of the link is on Po10 and the other end is on Po25. If I move the Po25 over to Po10, will things break? It seems to be working fine now. I'm about to add a second link and I'm concerned about the current configuration. It makes more sense to me to have both ends of the same link on the same port-channel ID. I've seen documentation which states otherwise however.
interface Port-channel10
no switchport
no ip address

I have 2 cisco 6500 in a VSS configuration , All of my Lan access switches are Stack switches and every Stack is connected to the VSS in a Port-channel so basically this is a loop free environment with no blocked ports .As a best practice I left STP in the Background (mstp)which enhanced cisco features to STP should I configure on the Aggregator (6500-VSS) and on the Access switches ?
Because of my topology I dont see the need in configuring most features like Uplink Fast and Backbone Fast but I have configured Loop Guard in addition to UDLD on the 6500 Aggregation Switches (on the port-channels).On the access ports I have configured portfast , bpduguard and guard root (seems a little pointless to configure the two...)
1.should I Leave UDLD on and get rid of LoopGuard and configure Guard root instead ? since LoopGuard cannot be configured with Guard Root.
2.should I configure GuardRoot on access ports if I already have BpduGuard on them ?
3.Is there anything I need to configure on the physicall interface or is everything configured on the port-channel since STP reguards port- channel as a single interface ?

I need adding a vlan to the trunks bundled in port channel. I know how to add v lans to a port channel with Cisco IOS but with CAT OS.
I have 2 ports bundled to form ether channel in switch which is running CAT OS. There are already few v lans allowed in the trunk of each interface. now I need to add one more v lan.
For Example:-
v lan 135 needs to be added in addition to the existing v lans.
clear trunk1/2 1-112,115,117-134,136-4094
set trunk 1/2 on dot1q 113-114,116,135
and similarly on the 2nd interface
so if I add vlan135 to the trunk one after another will it cause any service disruption?

I currently have a Cisco 2621 powering a network at our co-location facility... It's a simple setup and is working well. The colo provides a redundant HSRP uplink, so I have their two uplinks going into a Dell switch. From that Dell switch I have a uplink into FastEthernet0/0 on the 2621, configured with my routing network, and then FastEthernet0/1 gets an address from my block of routable IP. FastEthernet0/1 then plugs into another Dell switch where I have all my servers connected. The servers get public routable IP addresses and use the address on FastEthernet0/1 as their default gateway.
It's time to upgrade off the 2621, so I aquired a Cisco 2811 which has two FE interfaces, as well as a modular HWIC-4ESW switch. My question is, can I get rid of the Dell Switch A in the setup above and just use the internal switch on the 2811 to accomplish the same thing? And I if I did this, would my two uplinks from the colo plug into ports 1 and 2 of that HWIC, and then port 3 would physically connect into FE 0/0? Or can I logically do that via configuration in the Cisco? I'm not sure how all this works and haven't received the new router yet, so I thought I'd get a head start and reach out to the experts.
My second question is unrelated, but each port on the HWIC switch cannot be configured as a network interface right? I'm pretty sure they can't as they aren't considered network interfaces but just thought I'd ask.

such as the SLM2048T can be configured as an managed switch. Our schools have laptop carts and we want to put switches in the carts so that the laptops will be plugged into the network when not in use and software installs, updates, etc. can be pushed to the laptops while they're in the cart instead of waiting for them to be taken out, powered on and pushed over wireless. I can find a 10/100 48-port unmanaged switch, but I really want a gigabit unmanaged switch, but they don't seem to exist so I was wondering if a managed switch can be configured and used as an unmanaged switch. I don't want to have to assign a static IP address to the switch.

My task is to upgrade a couple of 6500 series switches, 6513 with SUP720/MSFC3 (WS-SUP720) and Policy Feature Card 3 (WS-F6K-PFC3B) installed. How to upgrade those switches if in SSO redundancy mode with two SUPs installed?
I understand that it is good to connect to the MSFC3 via console and upgrade this first, is this correct?
I also have to upgrade some 6509 but I only can test it on one 6509-E, how to get everything up to date. [code]

how to safely remove the WiSM2 from the Catalyst 6500 series switch? According to the documentation "Catalyst 6500 Series Wireless Services Module 2 Installation and Verification Note":
To remove the WiSM2, perform these steps:
Step1 Shut down the module by one of these methods: In privileged mode from the router prompt, enter the hw-mod module mod shutdown command. NoteIf you enter this command to shut down the module, you must enter the following commands in global configuration mode to restart (power down, and then power up) the module: Router# no power enable module modRouter# power enable module mod If the module does not respond to any commands, press the SHUTDOWN button located on the front panel of the module.
Step2 Verify that the WiSM2 shuts down. Do not remove the module from the switch until the POWER LEDis off.
But, in the case of Step1 (1st methods) I do not see a option "shutdown" in the command "hw-mod module 3"...
All I prompted to enter is: c6500#hw-module module 3 ?
boot Specify boot options for the module through Power Management Bus control register
reset Reset specified component
simulate Simulate options for the module Is it hidden options?
IOS version of c6500 is 12.2(33)SXJ1
In the case of Step2 (2nd methods) there is not any button on the front panel of the module?
And yet, it is better to remove the module configuration manually or use the command module clear-config prior to removing the module?

I have created 5 new 2 Gig port channels on a 6513 WS-X6516A-GBIC blade connecting to 5 4510R+E switches. 3 of the 5 Port-channels show up/up. 2 show down/down. However, for the 2 showing down, a duplicate Po interface was created with an "A" appended to the name that shows up/up. E.g:
Port-channel26 unassigned YES unset down down
Port-channel26A unassigned YES unset up up
Each of the 4510s has a second 2Gig PO to another 6513 with an identical config and all of those come up fine.

how to configure this. I did it in the past but kind of forgot how I did it.I have a stacked 3750 (two physical switches) connecting to a 2960.
I am creating trunk ports with limited access to VLAN 300, 600, and 700.
There is two interfaces connected from the 3750's(one on each physical stack member) to the 2960.I have the physical interfaces configured exactly the same.
3750 Config:
interface Port-channel2
!
interface FastEthernet1/0/46
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 1, 300,600,700
switchport mode trunk
speed 100
[code]....
Should I keep the configuration on the physical ports and not configure the Port-Channel Interfaces? Do I need to configure port-channel load balancing? Is the channel-group mode sufficient? Goal is to basically create 2 links to the 2960 to double the bandwidth and provide redundancy.

The new PC couldn't connect to the network and it's mac address has not be learned on the interface. Why?Which commands should I use to clear an old mac address and enable port-security with the new mac address.

On the supervisor card of a cisco 6500 series, according to the following link, [URL] it only has 2 uplink ports on the card. Would I be correct in assuming that I only have those to ports that I can configure IP addresses on?
The cisco that is being devlivere is coming with a 48 port switch and 24 port fibre switch. Could I change any of those ports into a router port and configure IP addresses on those?
The supervisor card is a ws-sup-720-3b the 48 port switch is a ws-x6748-ge-tx the 24 port fibre switch is ws-x6724-sfp

1. Is this following solution a good one (does the link between swhitches will work when computers will access to servers) ?

I have a customer that would like a 40Gb port-channel between two 3750-x switch stacks. When I try to activate four 10Gb ports in the channel, they go into error-disable. However, I am able to create a 20Gb port-channel without issue. I have had my configurations verified to Cisco best practice.
Is there a limitation on the amount of throughput that the 3750-x can handle? According to the data sheet the 3750X-48T can handle 101.2mpps, based on two 10Gb uplinks so if my math is correct then a stack of two 3750X-48T should be able to handle 202.4mpps.

I am little confused about the location of FIB table and adjacency table in both cisco 6500 series and fixed ports switches .In case of 6500 series switches
"Central CEF mode:The CEF FIB and adjacency tables reside on the route processor, and the route processor performs the express forwarding. Use this CEF mode when line cards are not available for CEF switching, or when features are not compatible with distributed CEF."
If line cards do no support CEF, then FIB and adjacency tables are built and are located on route processor( control plane ). Data plane operations are implemented in software and route processor performs those operations.
Some Cisco switches actually use different hardware to control the different planes. For example, the Cisco Catalyst 6500 is a modular switch that uses the Multilayer Switch.Feature Card (MSFC) for control-plane operations, and the supervisor Policy Feature Card (PFC) for the data-plane operations.
Supervisor module has has MSFC and PFC. MSFC implements control plane operation where as PFC implements data plane operation. But the first paragraph says in Central cef mode, both data plane and control plane operations are implemented by route processor. [code]
Do these switches implement the Central mode cef in same way as mentioned above. i.e
"Central CEF mode:The CEF FIB and adjacency tables reside on the route processor and the route processor performs the express forwarding. Use this CEF mode whenline cards are not available for CEF switching, or when features are not compatible with distributed CEF."Or fixed ports switches such as 3750 implement data plane operation in hardware where FIB tabe and adjacency table are maintained on Data plane.

We have one 3825 router used as voice gateway. For redudancy, we want to connect it to two different switches which has STP and HSRP running. Can I create a port-channel with two Giga interfaces in 3825 and connect to two different switches? Should I configure port channel in switch with only one port in each port-channel? I know server can be connected to different switches with NIC teaming. I just want to mimic that kind of setup. I did one time for port-channel in 3825, but it was connected to a stacked 3750X. So it's different case now.
