Cisco WAN :: Nexus 5K With N2K Layer 2 Mode With VPC

Mar 19, 2012

N5K will be running on Layer 2 mode. vPC configured between N5K and N2K Servers are part of Vlan 10, 20, 30 and Juniper SRX firewall is the gateway for all the servers. SRK firewall is Active/Standby mode.

Questions are

1) Is there any non-vPC link required between N5K in this scenario?

2) N5K will pass in/out traffic to juniper SRX firewall durining SRX failover as well as normal operation

Cisco :: How To Configure IP On Layer 3 Interface On Nexus

Apr 11, 2011

With most of my Layer2/Layer3 switches, I'm accustom to giving them a SVI on my management VLAN, and calling it a day. I can't find in the Cisco Nexus guides how to do something similar; everything points to the mgmt0 physical interface, which seems like I need to uplink it to an access port on another switch. Can somebody point me in the right direction for how to do give the Nexus an IP that I can ssh/snmp into it across a trunk for management? I must just be missing the keyword.. NX-OS is still quite a different beast.I see in the manual it says: "SSH has the following prerequisites: You have configured IP on a Layer 3 interface, out-of-band on the mgmt 0 interface or inband on an Ethernet interface." Cisco Nexus 5000 Series Switch CLI Software Configuration Guide page 284, How do I configure an IP on a Layer 3 interface on a Nexus?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Nexus 5k / 5500 And 802.1AE - Layer 2 Crypto

May 4, 2011

There is very little and quite diverse Information regarding the if, where and how of a Nexus 5000 or 5500 series Switch and support for IEEE 802.1AE Link Layer Encryption (also called MACsec).

For example: the official FAQ denies that the Nexus 5500-series supports 802.1AE at all, while the data sheet says that only "downlink ports" are supported (host access).

On the Nexus 7000 platform the 802.1AE link layer encryption is part of TrustSec (feature cts) and much better documented.

The Question is: If and under which circumstances (configuration, L3 modules, license, NX/OS version) does a Nexus 5k or 5500 series Switch support 802.1AE on 1G or 10G interfaces that are directly connected to a Nexus 7000 (with the necessary cts feature licensed/configured)?

Cisco Switches :: SF300-24 Layer 3 Mode Routing?

Dec 14, 2012

i've a problem with my SF300-24 routing. That's my network configuration:

Port 1 to 12 assigned to VLAN 10
Port 13 to 23 assigned to VLAN 20
Port 24 has an ip 10.17.7.254 to connect with my deafult route, beacuse I've also a Linksys RV042 router, connected in turn with my ISP router, having an ip 10.17.7.1.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Nexus 5000 / MTU Mismatch In Layer 2 Network?

Dec 26, 2012

I am just wondering on how mismatched MTU sizes are handled in Layer-2 networks and also inside a particular switches internal architecture.Layer 2 devices do not do fragmentation in the even of MTU mismatch. is this because Layer 2 devices do not re-write header information (like inserting destination IP and next hop MAC into the newly created frame.) i believe this is what they call per-hop behaviour? if this not the reason, then...? assuming this is the reason, let me proceed to my next question.     When we set MTU on an interface , there is no mention of direction (ingress or egress), so i take this as means in both directions. so if a jumbo frame comes in on an interface which is set to recieve jumbo frames and forwarding decision is made and the frame is scheduled to egress via an interface whose MTU is not set for Jumbo frames, will the switch drope the frame at the egress buffer? if not, this implies MTU is an ingress property(only for incoming packets). But, again if it drops the packet, then MTU shoud have been system wide or global configuration as opposed to interface level configuration (just like nexus 5000).

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Cannot Change SG300-28 To Layer 3 Mode

Jan 31, 2012

it says that the cisco sg300-28 managed switch default system mode is Layer 2. but i want to change it to layer 3.

i can't get inside the "Console Interface Main Menu" where the switching from L2 to L3 will be done.

I have done the ff:

1. Upgraded firmware to 1.1.2.0 (latest)

2. Reset the switch to factory defaults.

3. The guide stated that in order to perform telnet to the switch, you need to enable it. So I logged in first in to the web GUI and enable telnet service.

4. I can now start telnet on the switch but I can't see the "Switch main menu".

All I can see are these lines from telnet:

User Name:cisco
Password:******

switchd5928c#

I just want to know how to get into the console interface main menu where these lines should appear so that i can change the system mode:

• System Configuration Menu
• Port Status
• Port Configuration
• System Mode
• Help
• Logout

Cisco Switches :: SF300-24 Can't Change To Layer 3 System Mode

Mar 16, 2012

My SF300-24 switch has been working 100% as a backup switch for a client of mine. At my clients premises it was running 3 Vlan's and doing inter VLAN routing. When my client received their original switch back, I obviously brought my SF300-24 back to the workshop, reset it back to Factory defaults and tried to do a fresh installation on it. I can not get it to change from Layer 2 to Layer 3! I installed the latest firmware but still no go.

Everything works a 100% via the console, but when I go to the System Mode menu and try and edit it, it justs sits at layer 2 and will not chage to layer 3!

Cisco Switches :: SG300 - Setting Management Interface In Layer 3 Mode

Jun 13, 2012

How to set the management interface on a SG300 Switch in Layer 3 mode? I've some vlans configured on the switch with interfaces in each of them:

Vlan 100 (10.0.1.254 /24)
Vlan 200 (10.0.2.254 /24)
Vlan 300 (10.0.3.254 /24)
...
Vlan 900 (10.0.9.254 /24)

Now, the management interface is listening on all interfaces (IPs). But I would like to configure the switch to only listen on 10.0.9.254. What I need to configure or whether it is possible?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2900 - Nexus 7010 Layer 2 VLan 11 Active But Interface Shutdown

Sep 13, 2012

I understand the vlans on the catalyst side of the house on 2900 to 6500 Catalyst switches.

This 7010  running nx-os 5.1(3) I did not setup, but have to manage it.  Hasn't really been a proble till now.

My nexus 7010 has a Layer 2 only vlan 11. It is "Active" but the interface is "shutdown".  Yet, it is passing traffic across the directly connected  ports on the nexus 7010 and to other switches in my network.  Vlan 11 is being set out via VTP to all my switches and things are running fine.

I need to create another L2 only Vlan.  I can't seem to find any docs  that indicate that a Layer2 vlan Interface on nx-os should be in  "shutdown" mode as part of the setup. I do see in the docs where it has  to be set "Active" as part of the process.

Is this the correct way to seutp a L2 only vlan on nex-os? Leave the interface in "shutdown" but make it "Active"?

Mystery Vlan 4 and 6
The mystery deepens.  I have other L2 vlans ,Vlan4&6 that are NOT defined as "Interface Vlan4" in the nexus config, yet it is applied to GigE ports on the nexus and these Vlans 4/6is also being sent out VTP to all switches.  Even weirder is that these vlans have names associated with the numbers.  These are valid Vlans that were configured on the old 6509 before the Nexus was installed.

I have checked all switches, NONE are running in Server mode for VTP, all are in CLIENT. The nexus 7010 is the only device running in VTP Server mode.

3) just have the management address as the peer ip's.

Cisco Firewall :: ASA5510 Single Mode / Move To Multi Context Mode

Sep 16, 2012

I got an ASA 5510 system currently in single context mode, with CSC SSM installed. Single ISP uplink to internet, no VPN. And now customer would like add another ISP uplink, without invest another box for HA.What come across my mind is make the current box into multi context. There's some area i need to concern and also need yours perspective on it.

Question 1: For making the firewall into multi context, am i need to do it from scratch, issue mode multiple command. Then rebuilt the current production config into one of the context, then another context meant for the new IPS uplink, and one admin context?

Question 2: For CSC -SSM licensing requirement, model ASA 5510 with security plus license is able to support 2 context. So if i split my firewall like what i mention in question, what exactly number of context do i own (admin, context A, context B)?

Question 3: For CSC-SSM module in multi context mode, so the management port of CSC SSM must attach at admin context?

Question 4: After configured all the policy and traffic to scan, how exactly i should do in order apply this policy to the interface?  Should i only enable at admin context, then firewall service-policy rules, and apply it global, OR should i also do the same action on context A and Context B?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Changing 4510-SUP-6E Redundant Mode To Share-Backplane Mode

Mar 12, 2013

I received the following info from Cisco's TAC and wanted to inquire further before I start reconfiguring the switch:

In a redundant Sup-6E setup, the following configuration is supported :

- 1 TenGig uplink on Active Sup and 1 TenGig uplink on Standby Sup
- 1 TenGig uplink on Active Sup and 2 Gig uplinks on Standby Sup
- 2 Gig uplinks on Active Sup and 1 TenGig uplink on Standby Sup
- 2 Gig uplink on Active Sup and 2 Gig uplinks on Standby Sup

If you invoke shared backplane mode, the following configuration can also be supported:

- 2 TenGig uplinks(blocking) on Active Sup and 2 TenGig uplinks on Standby Sup
- 2 TenGig uplink(blocking) on Active Sup and 4 Gig uplinks on Standby Sup
- 4 Gig uplinks on Active Sup and 2 TenGig uplinks(blocking) on Standby Sup
- 4 Gig uplink on Active Sup and 4 Gig uplinks on Standby Sup

Here's the command and information about the "shared-backplane" mode :- [URL]

Currently, we have 2  SUP 6-Es(Module 5 - Active and Module 6 - Stand-by) setup in a redundent mode. I am planning on changing the redundent mode to the shared backplane mode so I can use 2 TenGig converters to uplink 2 access-switches. We purchased 2 TenGig converters and here is how I am planning on using them:

1- One will be used  to uplink to two 3750 switches(stacked)
2- One will be used to uplink to a 2960 using a Gig SFP

My questions are:

1- Do I have to install the 2 TenGig converters(4-Gig Uplinks) in the same Module? Or can I use one one in module 5 and the second one in module 6?
2- Will changing the redundant mode to the shared backplane mode require rebooting the switch or disrupt the funtionality of the other linecards?
