Cisco Wireless :: 5508 Controllers - After 7.0.116.0 Upgrade Intel Wi-Fi Link Cards Fail

Nov 10, 2011

Just recently upgrade our 2 5508 controllers from 6.0.199.0 to 7.0.116.0.  Since that upgrade, I have a handful (8 to 10) of wireless laptops that now refuse to associate to any access points.  The thing these laptops all have in common is some variation of the Intel Wifi Link AGN cards.  I have about 200 other clients out there working just fine.

I've tried everything under the sun that I can think of.  Patches, drivers, the whole sh'bang.

Is there a known issue with 7.0.116.0 and these particular cards?

Cabling / Cards :: Losing Connection Using Intel Wifi Link 1000?

Jun 14, 2011

I have the same issue and have been surfing the web for the solution for quite some time. Brand new Sony VAIO laptop with blu-ray has an Intel WiFi bgn 1000 wireless network adapter. It worked fine for couple of days, until i brought it to work. We use wireless connection in our office. Maximum 7 computers are connected at a time. All other 6 laptops connect to our network with no problems (all of them are on win7x64). Now, back to the problem. Wireless works at home and at work in the evening , when no one in the office. I've removed all 3rd party software, uninstalled Intel software. Am using clean driver from the Intel website. Tried different revisions of the driver - issue is still there. I've contacted VAIO support. This is not known issue to them. They offered standard actions (unisntalling the driver, power management options, enabling VAIO Smart Network). No updates of fixes on their support website. I have also checked in the event viewer. There is only one service being enabled and disabled constantly (TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper) - which is happening at the same time with wireless drop. There are about 5-8 drops per minute. Computer browser service disabled. Firewall disabled, antivirus disabled. We assume this could be an interference with mobile diveces. While now, we have disabled all wireless cards on all computers, switched off mobile phones. And... AXAXAXAXA!!! BSOD 0x00000018 (0x000....00, 0xFFFFFA800754A750, 0x00...02, 0xFC01020EFC01020B).

Cisco Wireless :: Setting Up Redundant 5508 Controllers

Mar 10, 2013

I am setting up two 5508 controllers, one in HA mode, and one the primary for the remote sites in question. I plan to have these units service wireless for MPLS conected regional sites (each with their own local subnet). I was planning on using the cabled hosts network in each site for the wifi addressing and was thinking a different addressing for Guest Access, is this common? I'm obviously concerned with guest access clients but don't know enough how their trafiic is segregated from normal wifi traffic.

Also, when I stand up the controllers the management interface and ap-manager won't be in the same network as where the hosts or LWAP's will reside (routing access will exist though).

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 - Replicating Between Controllers Automatically Without HA?

Jun 11, 2013

We have 2 Cisco 5508 WLCs, each wtih 50 licenses. What I would like to do is split the 50 odd APs between the 2 controllers load balancing the traffic. If a controller goes down or there is a break in the path all APs would failover to their configured secondary controller.  So far so good.

However there seems to be no way to 'replicate' the configurations between controllers unless I setup HA  , but as I understand it HA is Active /Passive, so essentially, unless you get a failover situaltion, completely 'redundant'.

Is there a way or either replicating between controllers automatically with out HA, or is there a way of making HA Active / Active?

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 - Reduce Controllers Overall Footprint

Aug 12, 2012

I'm looking into upgrading our 4400 series controller to 5508's.  Currently we have a few sites that have 8-9 4404 100AP controllers and I'm looking to condense these down to either 3 5508-500 or 5 5508-250 depending on cost.  I'm wondering what a good port to AP ratio is for controllers with licenses that can handle over 100 AP's.  I know the general rule of thumb is 25 AP's per port, but that seems to me to be 4400 way of thinking.  I'm trying to also reduce the controllers overall footprint, i.e. ports on the uplink switch, power consumption, rack space etc.

Cisco :: Load Balance 2 5508 Wireless Controllers?

Aug 1, 2012

--- I have 2 WLC's 5500 that I have to set up on my network with the same configuration except I am not sure that they can be load balanced.

--  My only thought is to take a full class C and on each WLC set up a /25, thus each device can provision 120 IP's

--- This seems a bit archaeic, but is there anything else smarter to do? Can they be load balanced?

Cisco Wireless :: Configure A Wired Guest Network With A Combination Of 5508 And 2504 Wireless Controllers?

Apr 7, 2013

Is there any way to configure a wired guest network with a combination of 5508 and 2504 wireless controllers? I am aware that the 2504 does not have wired guest functionality, however is it possible to set up a wired guest on the 5508 and using mobility anchors, transmit the l2 information through eoip to communicate with the remote vlan?Home built NAC solution, using 802.1x authentication on switchports for public areas. If user is an employee, communicates with the supplicant on their machine, and places them on an internal vlan.If user is a guest, user fails 802.1x check and is placed on a "guest" vlan with an ACL and external DNS.If placed on the guest vlan, the user has to accept a terms of use form. This is working currently with our 5508s without any issue, however we have some remote offices we'd like to roll this out to that are using 2504 controllers. I'm hoping there's a way that I can use the 5508 as an anchor or vice versa to make this work.

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 / WLC Proxy ARP Fail

Jun 9, 2013

I have a lab network setup at my house with similar equipment to our office that I use for testing different features and functionality.  Since I have had this installed (~ 2 years) I've had an intermittent but recurring problem with connectivity to various wireless devices that I have never been able to fully resolve.I have a 5508 Wireless controller with a handful of 3502i APs spread throughout my house.  The controller is connected to a 3560X switch.  And I have an ASA 5510 firewall as my Firewall/Internet Gateway. When I work from home I most often work from a desktop computer in my office and have a Windows RDP session to a laptop located in another room in my house on one of my monitors as a working space (I know this is weird but there is a good reason).  This laptop is connected via WiFi at all times.Occasionally, I will lose connectivity to this laptop (or not be able to connect back to my desktop from it) and have to start an extended ping from the laptop to the desktop to re-establish connectivity.  A while ago I performed some deeper analysis on what was happening and what I found is that when the connectivity breaks the problem is that the desktop is unable to resolve the MAC address of the laptop.  It sends out ARP requests but never receives any reply back.

Why would the controller stop replying to ARP requests for the IP address of the laptop? If I log into the controller while this is happening it shows the laptop as a connected client, and has its IP address and MAC address listed fine in the clients section.  In order to avoid getting up every time I need to reconnect, I normally hop to a system I control across one of my VPN tunnels via RDP, then connect BACK to the laptop and start the ping to re-establish connectivity back to my main desktop machine.  This works because the firewalls ARP cache hasn't cleared yet.  And then everything works fine again... unless I manually clear my ARP cache.  Sometimes clearing the ARP cache will result in the exact same problem again and I will lose connection.  Other times it seems to repopulate almost immediately and the connection doesn't drop.

A wireshark debug from the desktop reveals that ARP requests simply go out with no reply, confirming what is happening. As a note, I have set both the User Idle Timeout and the ARP timeout to 24 hours to try but this has not had any effect. This problem seems to go away and then come back.  In fact, I havent been experiencing this issue for probably a couple months recently and then it just started again in the last few days which is why I am back to posting here.  No changes to the network were made in the meantime that could account for this change in behavior.  I am currently running version 7.2.111.3 but this behavior has persisted through at least four software upgrades so I don't think it's an issue with a specific version but I don't really know.I occasionally epxerience connectivity issues in my house to other devices as well that I use less often like a printer, network camera, apple tv so I now feel like these issues are likely all related.

Cisco Wireless :: Set Up Fail Over Capability On Two Active WLC 5508

Mar 18, 2013

for some reason some AP's are terminating the association to either one of the controllers for a short period of time. When this happens and the AP re-associates itself with either of the active controllers, it looses the information of what group it previously belonged; and it gets dropped in the default group, broadcasting every single SSID available.

What I would like to see happen is that if for some reason an AP terminates association, but restablishes it shortly; it can automatically go to the correct group.

Both WLC are running the same version and have the same amount of licenses, they can hold all the AP's one of the WLC came down. Config-wise they are identical except that the groups are named differently but ultimately configured the same. If that is an issue we can change it no problem since it's only the name.

Cisco :: Rolling Upgrade Of WLC 4402 Controllers And APs

Nov 3, 2011

In need to upgrade the software on two WLC 4402 controller in a hospital.   Both WLCs have the same config and one is primary (has all APs connected) and the other backup (no APs connected.)  The APs are placed so there is still coverage if one goes down in an area.    My question - is it possible to do a rolling upgrade to have no downtime for the wireless clients?  My plan would be to upgrade the backup WLC then selectively move APs to it.  If I swap the primary and secondary controllers in the high availability tab on each AP, do I need to do a reset (General - Hardware Reset) or will it automatically reboot and connect to the upgraded backup controller?   When I'm done, I'd upgrade the primary controller and now call that backup.   Does this make sense?

Cisco :: 5508 Controllers Not Redirecting Client Requests To ISE

Jun 5, 2013

Please find attached a simple BYOD/ISE document I uploaded to kick start my new Wireless setup. Its all configured on my ISE sever and Controller as per doc.My setup:

-3600 AP's
-Internal 5508 Controller
-DMZ 5508 Controller (acts as a DHCP server for wireless clients)

Controllers have established connectivity (mobility acnhors), as a client I can connect fine to my new SSID get a DHCP IP address back from DMZ WLC and at the moment can connect out to the Internet fine (using no WLAN Security as a test). So this part is working.I have now followed the document configured ISE, enabled AAA on the Internal WLC only and used the AAA override setting on WLAN as in the attached document.I connect to SSID expecting to be redirected to my ISE Guest Portal, nothing happens other than connecting to Internet WebPages. My question is, if I have followed this document correctly why is the Internal WLC not redirecting client requests to ISE, is this because my mobility anchors need to be re-configured, perhaps the AAA/ISE config needs to be applied to my DMZ WLC not internal WLC?

I would prefer the Internal WLC to redirect the login to ISE, doesn't make sense to traverse through the DMZ Firewall onto DMZ WLC back into the Internal Network again to the ISE to authenticate.Or am I missing something additionally to this document to make sure clients are directed to the ISE Guest portal login.

Cisco :: 5508 - DHCP Load Sharing With Redundant Guest Anchor Controllers

Jan 28, 2012

I have 2 x Redundant Guest Anchor Controllers (5508) located in 2 separate Data Centers with all the management and guest user VLAN spanned between two. Everything is working fine with the Guest WiFi access except the DHCP functionality as the Controllers are acting themselves as the internal DHCP Servers.

This is how I tried to distribute :
network. 10.1.0.0/23
gateway: 10.1.1.254
Controller 1, DHCP Server pool: 10.1.0.2 - 10.1.0.254 Gw: 10.1.1.254
Controller 2, DHCP Server pool: 10.1.1.2 - 10.1.1.254 Gw: 10.1.1.254

As the user load balancing between the Anchor Controllers cannot be controlled (i.e. they are active/active), the same client sometime getting 2 different IP addresses from both the Controllers (as they do not talk to each other in terms of DHCP) hence depleting the pool addresses.

I guess one way of solving this is to just run 1 DHCP server in one of the controllers but that defeats the purpose of having N+1 Controllers. Is there a better way of doing the DHCP load balancing and having full redundancy at the same time?

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 / H-REAP LWAPs Losing VLAN Mapping When Fail To Secondary WLCs

May 2, 2011

I have three 5508 WLCs, running code 7.0.98.0 supporting 100+ LWAPs in H-REAP mode. The LWAPs are servicing 2-3 WLANs each. Some are using central authentication and local switching, some are configured for central authentication and central switching. When the LWAPs fail from one WLC to another WLC, the LWAP's lose all of their VLAN mappings and pick up the VLAN of the management interface on the new WLC.

All WLANs are configured to use the management interface on the WLC and the VLAN mappings are configured per LWAP on the H-REAP properties  tab.  The WLAN ID numbers and all the WLAN settings are the same across all 3 WLC's. I have created AP groups on all 3 WLC's and the AP group config matches across the 3 WLCs.

I can get the LWAPs to keep their VLAN mapping by creating an interface on the WLC with the VLAN ID of the locally switched/remote site VLAN and then setting the interface for the WLAN to the new interface. However, then the WLAN doesn't work, because the centrally located WLC doesn't have the remote site VLAN. It also seems to keep the VLAN mapping if I create the locally switched/remote site VLAN interface on the WLC , and point the WLAN to the management interface. This shouldn't be a necessary step though... In H-REAP with local switching, the LWAPs aren't using the interface on the WLC.

I found a note in the 7.0 WLC config guide that explains why the VLANs are picking up the management interface VLAN, but that same note says the VLAN mappings can be changed per LWAP/WLAN!

From config guide: For hybrid-REAP access points, the interface mapping at the controller for WLANs that is configured for H-REAP Local Switching is inherited at the access point as the default VLAN tagging. This mapping can be easily changed per SSID, per hybrid-REAP access point

Using H-REAP and been able to get the LWAPs to keep the VLAN mapping when failing from one WLC to another?

D-Link DIR-601 :: Intel Pro / Wireless 2200BG Will Not Connect

Jan 21, 2012

My RIM Playbook will connect to the DIR-601. My HP Laptop with the Intel WiFi 5300 AGN will connect to it.

However the Acer Aspire 1640 with the Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG will not.

SYMPTOMS:  The system can see the network SSID, even seems to pick up the correct encryption (AES or TKIP) and also whether I've configured it for B or G modes.  However when I attempt to connect to the network, the system prompts for the key, then pretends like it never did.  A second attempt prompts for the key, and attempts to connect, but fails, simply saying "Cannot connect."

SOFTWARE: This laptop is running Windows XP Home Edition SP3.  I've tried connecting using the Intel client PROSET software (the newest version, just downloaded) as well as the native Windows client.  THE EXACT SAME BEHAVIOUR OCCURS, leading me to believe it's not a software issue.

HARDWARE: This is a D-Link DIR-601 at Hardware Version B1 and Firmware Version 2.00NA

I have the router set to WPA-Personal, WPA2 Only, TKIP (have tried it on AES too), G only (have also tried B only).  The router has already been hard reset and I started over from scratch.  I've also ensured I have the latest drivers for the wifi adapter.

Other laptops, tablets, and even phones can connect to the router with no issue.

Seems like this is an incompatibility with this particular Intel WiFi adapter, but cannot find any official list of incompatible hardware I can use to confirm.

Would changing the software to DD-WRT work in this case, do you think? Or is this more likely to be a hardware thing?

No response to attempts to SSL via Putty. I powered it off, verified the memory was indeed fully seated, and re-installed the original 256 MB module. It powered up normally in less than 5 minutes.
