Cisco :: Rolling Upgrade Of WLC 4402 Controllers And APs

Nov 3, 2011

In need to upgrade the software on two WLC 4402 controller in a hospital.   Both WLCs have the same config and one is primary (has all APs connected) and the other backup (no APs connected.)  The APs are placed so there is still coverage if one goes down in an area.    My question - is it possible to do a rolling upgrade to have no downtime for the wireless clients?  My plan would be to upgrade the backup WLC then selectively move APs to it.  If I swap the primary and secondary controllers in the high availability tab on each AP, do I need to do a reset (General - Hardware Reset) or will it automatically reboot and connect to the upgraded backup controller?   When I'm done, I'd upgrade the primary controller and now call that backup.   Does this make sense?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Rolling Stack Upgrade (RSU) With 3750X (IOS 15.0.1-SE3)?

Jun 17, 2012

Switch 2 has an interface configured in RSU Standby.Switch 3 has an interface configured in RSU active. The upgrading sequence is : Switch 2, Switch 1, Switch3.The aim of the test is to prove that there is no loss of IP connectivity throught the RSU process.During the RSU process, there are ping between all the computers.

IOS starting version : 15.0-1.SE3
IOS upgrading version (with OVERWRITE) : 15.0-1.SE3 (same version)

1rst step : Switch 2 reboot and come back master but isolated from original stack (switch 1 and 3)

2nd step : Switch 1 reboot, and come back with switch 2 into the upgrading stack.

Issue : at this step :

-  Switch 1 put its interface (IP 192.168.5.254) up :

-  Switch 3 has not reboot and still has its interface (IP 192.168.5.254) up

=> we have some OSPF adjencies and mac flapping issues : switch 1 and 3 are trying to mount there OSPF adjencies on the same IP. We loss our IP connectivity since step 3 is not over.

3rd step : Switch 3 reboot and come back up in the upgrading stack. The IP connectivity is back, and the RSU process is done.Is that a normal behaviour ?How can we avoid to loose IP connectivity during RSU process ?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Rolling Stack Upgrade Of Catalyst 3750

Apr 1, 2013

I want to run rolling-stack upgrades on several stacks containing Catalyst 3750X-switches. I have done as follows: Configured the redundant uplinks as active and stand-by.Started to upgrade by using archive download-sw /rolling-stack-upgrade /overwrite /reload The upgrade starts as expected BUT switch number 2 in the stack is reloaded BEFORE switch 1 is finnished, the result is of course downtime for the stack. The documentation says something about the command "boot time", but what is this command doing? The default seems to be 7 minutes, it this parameter the time the upgrade-process waits before booting the next switch in the stack? I would expect that switch number 2 is reloaded when switch 1 is up again after reload, and not after an absolute number of minutes, is the rolling-stack-upgrade not working this way ?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750X Rolling Stack Upgrade / Update

Mar 19, 2013

This feature doesn't work as advertised on the Release Notes and other documentation.  After 12 hrs of lab work and a tlwo day support call to TAC, they finally came back to me that:

IOS Upgrade works well if you use the command force-reload, without force-reload, it won't work.  --"of course with this command the complete stack will go down and the purpose of RSU will not serve"

Then they pointed me to a bug that I could not find in the bug tracker unless I searched by the bug ID number ??   CSCua78897

Unfortunately this bug has a closed status and is not slated to be fixed ?

Cisco :: WLC 4402 - HTTPS Access / Controllers Cannot Be Reached

Aug 1, 2011

I am working in an environment with 6 4402 all running 6.0.119.4 code and WCS 6.0.196.0.  I keep getting an alert from WCS that the controllers cannot be reached "Controller '10.x.x.x' is unreachable. - Controller Name: 'Name'"

Now when I go to access the WLC through HTTPS I have no access at all but controller still responds to ICMP, HTTP, Telnet, SSH.  I know I should have HTTP and Telnet disabled but since HTTPS keeps failing I would have no way to get into the controller. Is this a known issue in the 6.0.199.4 code? should I consider upgrading?  The only fix I have found to work is to disable HTTPS reboot controller enable HTTPS and reboot again.

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 Controllers - After 7.0.116.0 Upgrade Intel Wi-Fi Link Cards Fail

Nov 10, 2011

Just recently upgrade our 2 5508 controllers from 6.0.199.0 to 7.0.116.0.  Since that upgrade, I have a handful (8 to 10) of wireless laptops that now refuse to associate to any access points.  The thing these laptops all have in common is some variation of the Intel Wifi Link AGN cards.  I have about 200 other clients out there working just fine.

I've tried everything under the sun that I can think of.  Patches, drivers, the whole sh'bang.

Is there a known issue with 7.0.116.0 and these particular cards?

Cisco Wireless :: WLC 4402 Software Upgrade

Nov 7, 2011

I ##have a customer with  WLC 4402 in use, running software version 7.0.98.0, and supporting 11 APs at present. The customer wants to enlarge the WLAN, which involves increasing the number of APs. I #####have purchased a new WLC5508, and have installed it onto the network alongside the 4402. the 5508 is running software version 7.0.116.0. Because the wireless network is critical to the user, we want to move the APs over to the new controller while the network is up and running, then remove the 4402.

However, when we set the 5508 as the master controller, or tell one of the APs to use the 5508 as its primary controller, the AP connects to the new controller, downloads the new software version, attempts to load it but reports an error with the unzipped file size of the software and fails to boot. formatting the flash on the AP, then disconnecting the 5508 from the network and rebooting the AP allows it to connect to the 4402, it downloads the older software and boots as normal. A new AP, if connected to the 5508 in a test scenario (ie no 4402) connects, downloads and boots perfectly.

I #have the upgrade software to allow the 4402 to be upgraded to 7.0.116.0, but I am concerned that, if this is installed, the existing APs will then fail to boot from the 4402 or the 5508.all APs are 3502s, running IOS version 12.04(23c)JA when connected to the 4402 and 12.04(23c)JA2 on the 5508.

Cisco Wireless :: Cannot Console Into WLC 4402 After Upgrade

my client claimed that right after thry upgraded their WLC 4402 to version 7.0.220.0 from the version that came preinstalled (factory) the can no longer console into the device. They were able to console into the 4402 before the upgrade but now they can't. I'm thinking that maybe they upgraded straight to the new version and didn't verify to see whether they were allowed to upgrade directly to that version 7.0.220.0 or if they needed to upgrade to a intermediate version , the proceed to upgrade to the 7.0.220.0.

Cisco Wireless :: WLC-4402-25-K S/W - Upgrade Went Wrong

May 3, 2012

WLC-4402-25-K S/W - Primary and Secondary Controllers were running 4.2.130 to begin with. Customer upgraded remotely using NCS -  Primary to 4.2.209 and then to 7.0.230 and all that went fine and is in Production.

Then customer upgraded Secondary also using NCS  also from 4.2.130 to 4.2.209 in preparation to upgrade to 7.0.230 and he lost contact with the controller. Sent a technician to site to troubleshoot by connecting to Serial Port. Technician #ESCAPED out of the boot sequence and from the BOOT MENU tried to boot the Primary Image and it failed with CRC error on Flash. He then tried to boot the Backup image and had the same problem. He then tried to manually load 7.0.230  - ER (Boot Software) using TFTPD32.EXE and that went fine. He then tried to load 7.0.230 "aes" S/W  - The big over 70 MB file and went through most of the file transfer but failed saying:

ERROR: Transfer Failed.

TFTPD32.EXE said something like "Data Packet too Short or some such thing". Sorry did not write down what TFTPD32.EXE said.

Then we thought "may be" a power cycle of the unit is required after the ER Boot Loader Image was loaded. When we did that the unit died. That is - no communication with the Serial Port. We don't think we have any choice other than RMA - Do we?

Customer says he did read and follow this link - especially Table 10-1. {URL}. He said he used NCS to do the Upgrade. I a not familiar with NCS.

I want to be sure is this the IOS that the AP download after the Software upgrade??

Cisco Wireless :: After Upgrade WLC 4402 Doesn't Boot

Jun 10, 2013

I wanted to upgrade our three WLC 4402 from software version 5.0.148 to 6.0.202.0. The upgrade on the first controller was working. Unfortunately he lost all the local management users and it's MAC filters, but restoring this was not the problem. After upgrading the second controller.... the device does not boot anymore! The alarm led is RED and I don't know what to do. The only way to get connected to the controller is via the console port. There I can see a "parse error" but I don't know if that is the problem. Please look at the "log" attached. I'm not sure if the red alarm led was there before upgrading the controller software because the device is located to another place. I'm really concerned about upgrading the third controller because it's the most important wlc.

Cisco Wireless :: 3850 - L2 / L3 - Difference Between Controllers?

May 2, 2013

which describe that

L2 roam occurs when the user roams from an access point connected to its controller to a different access point connected to another controller, where the two controllers are L2 adjacent to each other.

L3 roam occurs when the user roams from an access point connected to its controller to a different access point connected to another controller, where the two controllers are L3 adjacent to each other.

so what exactly this mean the two controllers are L2/L3 adjacent to each other , what is the different between them.

The one with the newest version runs 7.2.103.0 while the other one runs 7.0.220.0 I want to run them together in the same subnet and use them for redundancy (10 AP's will connect).

Is there a way I can download the software from the controller, just like I am able to do with an ASA firewall? Then I can upload it to the controller with the older software version.

Cisco :: 5508 Controllers Not Redirecting Client Requests To ISE

Jun 5, 2013

Please find attached a simple BYOD/ISE document I uploaded to kick start my new Wireless setup. Its all configured on my ISE sever and Controller as per doc.My setup:

-3600 AP's
-Internal 5508 Controller
-DMZ 5508 Controller (acts as a DHCP server for wireless clients)

Controllers have established connectivity (mobility acnhors), as a client I can connect fine to my new SSID get a DHCP IP address back from DMZ WLC and at the moment can connect out to the Internet fine (using no WLAN Security as a test). So this part is working.I have now followed the document configured ISE, enabled AAA on the Internal WLC only and used the AAA override setting on WLAN as in the attached document.I connect to SSID expecting to be redirected to my ISE Guest Portal, nothing happens other than connecting to Internet WebPages. My question is, if I have followed this document correctly why is the Internal WLC not redirecting client requests to ISE, is this because my mobility anchors need to be re-configured, perhaps the AAA/ISE config needs to be applied to my DMZ WLC not internal WLC?

I would prefer the Internal WLC to redirect the login to ISE, doesn't make sense to traverse through the DMZ Firewall onto DMZ WLC back into the Internal Network again to the ISE to authenticate.Or am I missing something additionally to this document to make sure clients are directed to the ISE Guest portal login.

Cisco Wireless :: Setting Up Redundant 5508 Controllers

Mar 10, 2013

I am setting up two 5508 controllers, one in HA mode, and one the primary for the remote sites in question. I plan to have these units service wireless for MPLS conected regional sites (each with their own local subnet). I was planning on using the cabled hosts network in each site for the wifi addressing and was thinking a different addressing for Guest Access, is this common? I'm obviously concerned with guest access clients but don't know enough how their trafiic is segregated from normal wifi traffic.

Also, when I stand up the controllers the management interface and ap-manager won't be in the same network as where the hosts or LWAP's will reside (routing access will exist though).

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 - Replicating Between Controllers Automatically Without HA?

Jun 11, 2013

We have 2 Cisco 5508 WLCs, each wtih 50 licenses. What I would like to do is split the 50 odd APs between the 2 controllers load balancing the traffic. If a controller goes down or there is a break in the path all APs would failover to their configured secondary controller.  So far so good.

However there seems to be no way to 'replicate' the configurations between controllers unless I setup HA  , but as I understand it HA is Active /Passive, so essentially, unless you get a failover situaltion, completely 'redundant'.

Is there a way or either replicating between controllers automatically with out HA, or is there a way of making HA Active / Active?
