Cisco Wireless :: Migrating From 4402 To 5508 - AP Compatibility

May 30, 2013

We currently run six 4402 Wireless lan controllers - these are managed by a WCS server - soon to be replaced by Cisco Prime. We run a mixture of LAP1242 and LAP1142 wireless access points. I need to add more but have been told by my supplier that the both these AP's are now end of sale and cannot be purchased.

The replacement AP's are the 2600 series - but I have been told that these are not compatible with my existing 4402 controllers.

To make matters worse I was then advised that if I purchase the new 5580 controllers the older LAP1242 access points will not work with it and require replacing - this, for me, is a lot of access points.

What I need to know is:

What access points, if any, are currently available that are compatible with my 4402 controllers and a future 5508 installation?

I ssem to be in a situation now where I cannot buy any access points that will work with my 4402's but if I upgrade all my current 1242's will not funtion with the new 5508 controller!

Cisco Wireless :: Migrating 2 Standalone 5508 To One Mobility-group

Jan 23, 2012

for some reason our wlan-controllers were build up to be standalone instead of beeing one mobility-group. I would like to change this in order to use all features of HA.

let me describe our scenario: two WLCs 5508 running SW ver. 6

- same subnet

- both are running in master controller mode

- different hostnames, ip-addresses, etc

- all settings for WLANs and AP-groups (exept the APs themselves in these groups) are the same

- in total at this moment we are running around 100 LAPs configured one half on WLC#1, the other half on WLC#2

I don't know exactly why, but when that setting was installed, someone already configuredHA for each accesspoint... e.g.:

- AP#1 primary WLC#1, secondary WLC#2

- AP#2 primary WLC#2, secondary WLC#1 but without WLC#2 knowing the configuration for AP#1 it makes no sense, correct?

so my question is: how should I do the migration in the best way?
is it easy as:

- disabling master controller mode on WLC#2

- configuring both WLCs into one mobility group

--> WLCs are negotiating their configurations for the APs

Cisco Wireless :: WLC 5508 Migrating With Clients Connecting To Old WAPs?

Aug 26, 2012

I'm working on migrating autonomous WAPs to lightweight mode in a WLC 5508. Some of the older WAPs are being decommissioned at the same time.

One issue I have found is that after replacing an old WAP in autonomous mode with a new WAP (3502); some clients near the coverage of this new LWAPP are now connecting to another WAP in autonomous mode that has not been converted or replaced yet; but that is located quite far away from where these clients are, actually two floors down. Users on these clients have reported wifi dropouts, which is obvious due to the distance where the old WAP is. A workaround that seems to work is removing the wifi profiles in the client machines and recreating them again, which is not a good solution for all of the wifi profiles we have in place. At this point of time we still need to have the older WAPs until they are all replaced.

How can I get clients connecting to a LWAPP that is closer to their location? I'm wondering what causes those clients to look for an existing older WAP rather than connecting to the new LWAPP, which is broadcasting the same SSID closer to where they aree. Bear in mind that the new LWAPP is working fine and has live sessions working just fine.

Cisco :: Migrating APs From WLC 4400 V.4.0.179.11 To WLC 5508 V.7.2.110.0

Jun 11, 2012

I am replacing an old 4400 series WLC running version 4.0.179.11 to a new 5508 WLC running version 7.2.110.0.

We currently have 70 x 1131 Access points on the 4400 WLC.

With this upgrade, do i need to upgrade the old 4400 to version 6.0 so the AP's get an up to date IOS or can i directly migrate all AP's over to the new 5508 without any version incompatabilities on the AP's?

I am abit worried that the AP's are running a very old IOS on the 4400 v.4.0.179.11 to go straight to the new 5508 v.7.2.110.0.

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 / FlexConnect Compatibility With Access Point

Apr 22, 2013

Subject: FlexConnect compatibility with Access Point? We have today one Cisco 5508 and those access point on remote sites

o CISCO AIR-LAP-1131AG-E-K9
o CISCO AIR-LAP-1231G-E-K9
o CISCO AIR-LAP-1142N-E-K9

We plan to use redundancy on the controller and implement Flexconnect on the remote site. What we need to know is if I can implement Flexconnect on all actual access point - I think it is possible on 1142N + 1131G but do not know on 1231AG - is it correct or I'm wrong ? We plan to install the latest SW version for 5508 controller.

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 And 4402 Controller Anchoring?

Mar 11, 2012

I am running 5508 wireless controllers. I pass along another agency's WLAN across my wireless network that is anchored to their older 4402 controller.

I wish to run the new 3600 series APs and am planning on migrating to NCS and the new 7.2 code.

I know that the older 4400 series controllers will not handle the newer 7.1 or 7.2 code. However, i still wish to maintain this anchor relatiosnhip with the older 4402 controller. I need to know if this will work or not.

Cisco Wireless :: Replace 4402 With 5508 Controller

Oct 6, 2012

I'd like to replace my 4402 Wireless controller with a new 5508. I have migrated the exact configuration from my 4404 controller to the 5508 and they are both running the same version of code. I'm worried that if I replace the 4402 with the 5508 controller, the Access Points will not rejoin to the new controller or they will join but will have lost their configuration e.g. AP Name/location etc etc. AP models registered to the existing controller are 1131, 1142 and 3502. I am also using Cisco WCS.

As long as the new controller has the exact same configuration, is it possible to replace the 4404 with the 5508? Will the existing Access Points join the new controller? Is there any other configuration required? I have read about doing this using mobility groups however would rather not if possible.

Cisco Wireless :: WLC 5508 Tunnel To 4402 Anchor

Jul 5, 2011

We have got a WLC 4402 as an anchor that provides guest internet access to our visitors. Our wan sites have 4402's running a tunnel to this anchor for guest traffic. We have got a new site coming up that will have a 5508 as its WLC. I am trying to determine if the 5508 will successfully form a tunnel with the existing 4402 anchor. I am assuming that it will be ok or maybe the 4402 will require an ios upgrade. Our AP's everywhere are 1131's but the new site will have the later versions which can work with the CAPWAP based 5508.

will the tunnel between the 4402 and 5508 work well or will it require an ios + bootstrap upgrade on the 4402 and subsequently the rest of the 4402's or it will not work altogetherwill the CAPWAP AP's at the new site work well with the 4402 LWAPP anchor - I am assuming that they will since the CAPWAP compatibility requirements are really between the AP and its local WLC. Our 4402's are on 4.2.61.0 and I am proposing to management that we should upgrade these to 7.0.116.0 to prepare the infrastructure for any potential issues.

Cisco Wireless :: 4402 And 5508 Controller Installation

Oct 30, 2012

My client has on cisco 4402 controller running with 48 AP on this. Client requires to add another 25 AP but licence on the current controller is not supported client bought another controller 5508 with 25 AP.

I have been tasked to installe 5508 with conjestion of 4402. I have make the software version on both of them as below

AIR-CT5500-K9-7-0-235-3.aes
AIR-WLC4400-K9-7-0-235-3.aes

To match the same IOS version on both the controller. I have following challenges with me.

- 5508 will registered 25 AP while .. 4408 will continue with 48 AP.
- 5508 is going to be in DC and it will be directly connected to firewall as default gateway for guest SSID. 4402 is going to be on another building.
- How can I make sure that Users connected to AP registered with 4402 will have the same deafult gateway as 5508. Thre is no layer 2 connectivity between this two controllers.
- There is no romaing going to happen between this two controller as both are two different locations and user will leave one location will disconnect and it joines bak when it reach to another controller.
- Is there any way to configure 5508 as master and 4402 as slave kind of connections?

Cisco Wireless :: 4402 Guest Anchor Controller 5508 Software 7.2

Nov 6, 2012

We currently have all of our foreign AP controllers on software version 7.0.116.  This consists of a mixture of 4400 and 5508 WLC's.  Our guest anchor is a 4402 on version 7.0.116.  We are replacing the guest anchor with a 5508.  We are also upgrading our 5508 wireless controllers to version 7.2 to support the 3600 series AP's.  My question is what is the recommeded code that the anchor controller should be on?  Should it also be upgraded to 7.2?  If we upgrade the anchor controller to version 7.2, will this affect anchoring to 4400 series foreign controllers still on7.0.116?

Cisco :: 5508 / 4402 - Office Extend Suggestion

Dec 15, 2011

I have attached a diagram of the current topology. At present, we have two 5508 connected to our core. We also have a 4402 behind the firewall (DMZ) just purely for guest access. So the staff users connect to the access point which in turns connects to the Staff WLC 1 (if this fails then to Staff WLC2). any guest user connect to the access point which in turn connects to Staff WLC which anchors to Guest WLC which then provides access. Since the guest is behind the DMZ they can only access the internet and not out internal network.

Now we want to office extend our network - we want our users to use 1132 AP at home to access the Infrastructure. is there a way we can do this without disturbing the existing infrastructure. On reading Cisco website, i know the best practice is to use 2 5508 (one behind the firewall and the other anchored to this access the internet network ) i thought since we have a Cisco (dmz) switch (48 port) and only the 4402  (Guest WLC) is connected to it, maybe purchase another 5508 WLC and connect to the 48 port Cisco (dmz) switch. will this work?

Cisco WAN :: Migrating From A PIX 501 To ASA5505

Jan 22, 2011

We are pulled the plug on our PIX 501 as its not letting us use all 100Mbit that our cable provider is now piping to us. I read the conversion guide but it made no mention of the 501's. Only the 515's or newer. The ASA5505 is putting up a little bit of a fight (This what I get for failing my CCNA??)After refusing to configure the LAN ip address to something other than what it was shipped with, I broke down and connected to the management console and forced an IP address on the LAN side. Now I reset my default config and everyone can get on the internet.Until the ISP cuts you off because you forgot to set your static IP. Oh, and by the way, they dont support Cisco gear.

When I attempt to assign the IP to the outside interface, it accepts without a hitch, but everything grinds to a halt. I cannot have this, as I have off-site users that operate with dedicated ports using Remote Desktop.  I've attempted to set the IP via both ASDM and management console. I've tried setting a static route, but that doesnt give me any love either. Im running ASA Version 8.2(1) and ASDM Version 6.2(1)Once I get the static IP set and working properly, I can tackle moving the port configs.

I successfully performed it for IP settings, it was easy since the data format was the same.

But the format differs quite alot for Interface and Port data, here is an example:

export from LMS 3.1
IF-hostname/17 [Gi0/0.524] [10.55.254.3]; INTERFACE:;IF-hostname/17; MANAGED_STATE:;EXPLICITLY_UNMANAGED
export from LMS 4.2.3
INTERFACE:IF-hostname/17 MANAGED_STATE:MANAGED GigabitEthernet0/0.524

It looks like I have convert interface names, sort and delete stuff to make it look the same.

Cisco VPN :: Migrating From PIX 515e To ASA 5510

Jan 28, 2011

I have recently migrated from a PIX 515e to an ASA 5510. In the main this was successful. However, I have a number of L2L VPN's (all connecting to Cisco PIX 501 or 505). The majority of these VPN's are working fine. However, I have a couple of VPN's that are causing me a problem. It seems like the tunnel is established for anything between 10 minutes and 4 hours before going 'down'. I cannot initiate the tunnel again from the hub end (ASA 5510) of the VPN.However, if the remote end reboots the PIX, the tunnel is re-established.The ASA is running 8.3(1) and the remote PIX's will be running various versions of code but will all be 6.3(x). The strange thing here is that the majority of the sites are working and the config for each tunnel is identical other than the access-lists for interesting traffic and peer address.

I've been tasked with migrating to the new ISP, which provides us with Cisco ME-3400E switch and /26 public subnet. I currently have 15 static NATs and 14 L-2-L VPN tunnels configured in ASA. Is there a way to configure additional Outside int on ASA and use it to migrate the existing VPN tunnels and static NATs? I'm trying to avoid downtime and hope to do it step by step. I'm thinking about adding additional Public switch, so I can also migrate vendor's router and VPN concentrator, which need to be in parallel to ASA. Assuming that this is possible I'd would like to do the following:

1.Configure and connect additional Outside Interface on ASA - public IP address and ACLs

2.Connect it to additional "Public switch", which would be configured with public IP address and connected to new ISP's Cisco ME-3400E.

3.Migrate my VPN tunnels and static NATs.

4.Migrate vendors equipment/VPN concentrator

5.Update my global NAT pool

6.Shut down old ISP
