Cisco WAN :: Migrating ASA 5510 To ASA 5505?
May 7, 2013
for testing purposues i wanted to exchange a running ASA 5510 with a ASA 5505. I included the running configs from both the ASA 5510 and the new configured ASA 5505.
On the running ASA 5510 there is:
one interface for WEB
static IP xx.xxx.xxx.178
route 0.0.0.0 xx.xxx.xxx.177

I have recently migrated from a PIX 515e to an ASA 5510. In the main this was successful. However, I have a number of L2L VPN's (all connecting to Cisco PIX 501 or 505). The majority of these VPN's are working fine. However, I have a couple of VPN's that are causing me a problem. It seems like the tunnel is established for anything between 10 minutes and 4 hours before going 'down'. I cannot initiate the tunnel again from the hub end (ASA 5510) of the VPN.However, if the remote end reboots the PIX, the tunnel is re-established.The ASA is running 8.3(1) and the remote PIX's will be running various versions of code but will all be 6.3(x). The strange thing here is that the majority of the sites are working and the config for each tunnel is identical other than the access-lists for interesting traffic and peer address.

I currently have the following set up (excuse my quick drawing):
--------------Vendors VPN Router----
| ------Cisco 3000 VPN------ |
| | | |
Private Network-------ASA5510---------Pub Switch------Cisco Router 2x T1
I've been tasked with migrating to the new ISP, which provides us with Cisco ME-3400E switch and /26 public subnet. I currently have 15 static NATs and 14 L-2-L VPN tunnels configured in ASA. Is there a way to configure additional Outside int on ASA and use it to migrate the existing VPN tunnels and static NATs? I'm trying to avoid downtime and hope to do it step by step. I'm thinking about adding additional Public switch, so I can also migrate vendor's router and VPN concentrator, which need to be in parallel to ASA. Assuming that this is possible I'd would like to do the following:
1.Configure and connect additional Outside Interface on ASA - public IP address and ACLs
2.Connect it to additional "Public switch", which would be configured with public IP address and connected to new ISP's Cisco ME-3400E.
3.Migrate my VPN tunnels and static NATs.
4.Migrate vendors equipment/VPN concentrator
5.Update my global NAT pool
6.Shut down old ISP

Attached is a diagram of my network. My company has leased some office space to an outside company that handed me a 5505 and said "We want to VPN to our HQ through your Internet". I have two issues: I need this to work and I need to be able to access the 5505 from the management network. I don't care about the VPN aspect as much as making sure that I have basic communication down. I have everything configured per the diagram, but I can't ping the 5505 outside (Vlan 2) interface. I want to be able to configure and test the VPN setup on the 5505 from Putty on my PC.
The default route on the 5520 sends traffic to 10.10.1.1 and the default route on the 5510 sends traffic to the WAN interface. I added this route on the 5510:
outside 10.94.4.0 255.255.255.0 10.10.8.1
I still can't ping the default gateway on the 5505. There is a switch between my PC and the 5520 but the default route passes the traffic to the 5520. However on my tracert I don't even get to the 5520. Do I have to add a route to the switch just to manage the ASA 5505?

-access-list outside_in extended permit icmp any any unreachable
-access-list outside_in extended permit icmp any any time-exceeded
-access-list outside_in extended permit icmp any any echo-reply
when i traceroute it only goes one hop.. Maybe thats the way it suppose to be? I need to know all the hops between the outside interfaces on the 5505 to the outside interface on the 5510.

I am absolutely new in the enterprise firewall world but I would like to start learning how to configure ASA 5505 and 5510. I did some research myself and I found that the material or the topic itself is a huge adventure (lots to read and understand). My company uses IOS versions until 8.2 due to the differences in the NAT-ting rules with 8.3 and 8.4.

I have not really set up ASAs nor VPNs on Cisco devices before. I'm currently attempting to configure a remote access VPN between ASA devices, a 5505 and a 5510. The 5510 is meant to be the server and the 5505 is meant to be the easyvpn client. The reason I am opting for remote access as opposed to site to site is that I have many 5505s at remote sites that I will need to configure in the future, and they will be moving around a bit (I would prefer not to have to keep up with the site-to-site configs). The 5510 will not be moving. Both ASA devices are able to ping out to 8.8.8.8 as well as ping each other's public facing IP.
Neither ASA can ping the other ASA's private IP (this part makes sense), and I am unable to SSH from a client on the 5510 side to the 5505's internal (192) interface. I have pasted sterilized configs from both ASAs below.
ASA 5510 (Server)
ASA Version 8.0(4)
!
hostname ASA5510
domain-name <domain>
enable password <password> encrypted
passwd <password> encrypted

I currently use MS ISA Server 2006 to protect a windows internal network, where there is also an MS Exchange server. I have acquired a Cisco 5510 to enhance security at main office. Later I will have ASA 5505 for branches, including VPN-ning. to have firewall at main office. I have several public IPs and would like to setup DMZ for Web, Exchange server and FTP. How do I setup interface and sub-interface for the DMZ?Can I continue using ISA Server connecting to Cisco 5510 on the perimeter? If so, How do I set the interfaces (and sub-interfaces) as well as NAT-ting and access configuration between the inside and outside?

There are three different sites, two are composed of Multilayer switches cisco 3560 and 3570 as core switches (a 3560 in one site and a 3570 in another site), the last site doesn't have any routers just a 2950 switch. Each site has two asa 5505 as firewalls. Two Internet connexions are connected to every site, one on every firewall. One Internet line is used to connect the different sites together using VPN crypted with IPsec and the other line is just for Internet access. The line that is used to interconnect sites contains voice and data traffic. At the moment all the routes are static routes, the network isn't too big for now and counts not more than 20 subnets. But it is evolving, and I want to use dynamic routing, EIGRP to be more accurate. I've looked into it and I'm not sure how to make it work. The VPNs active on the ASAs don't support dynamic routing, so I thought about GRE tunnels but the ASAs don't seem to allow it either.

Trying to figure out how to configure the VPN client side to access a remote LAN.
Lan A - 172.16.17.0 - ASA5505 8.2(3)
Lan B - 200.200.0.0 - ASA5510
Cisco Client - V5
At present there exist a VPN tunnel between LAN A and LAN B. The client has a VPN tunnel to LAN A to run software package X on the LAN A server. The client also needs to run software package Y which needs access to a database on LAN B. The computers on LAN A have no problem using package Y since a VPN tunnel exist between LAN A and LAN B. How can I get the Client to also access LAN B on the same tunnel created when the client connects to LAN A? I can't seem to get packets that are directed to LAN B to cross the Client tunnel to A which would then hopefully move onto the LAN A/ LAN B tunnel.

We have a new site-to-site configuration comprised of two ASAs (a 5505 at the remote site and a 5510 locally). The site-to-site tunnel is up and appears to be working fine, with the exception of one thing; two identified IP addresses on the remote end cannot seem to communicate across the tunnel.
For example: address 192.168.3.81 is able to see resources at our facility, but 192.168.3.82 (an HP Laser jet P2055dn) cannot. However, 192.168.3.82 is ping able from the inside interface of the remote ASA and doesn't appear to be having any other connectivity issues. Also, the default gateway of this device appears to be set properly. When checking the real-time log viewer, I'm not seeing any error messages, it just appears as if the .82 device is not routing to the remote ASA, but strangely enough the local ASA's logs do seem to show communication with .82. (See the below logs.)
When we attempt to ping the 192.168.3.82 address from a local PC (10.10.10.10) that participates in the VPN tunnel, we see the following:
Local ASA
6|Jan 31 2012|16:03:53|302021|192.168.3.82|0|10.10.10.10|512|Teardown ICMP connection for faddr 192.168.3.82/0 gaddr 10.10.10.10/512 laddr 10.10.10.10/512

[ code].....
We can successfully ping 192.168.3.81 from the same local workstation we see the following on the remote ASA :
6|Jan 31 2012|16:03:38|302021|10.10.10.10|512|192.168.3.81|0|Tear down ICMP connection for faddr 10.10.10.10/512 gaddr 192.168.3.81/0 laddr 192.168.3.81/0
[Code]....
We have no IP address overlapping and neither ASA's logs show any errors. Unfortunately, we don't have access to the remote site's router configurations, but we've been assured that the issue is not on their end.

We are pulled the plug on our PIX 501 as its not letting us use all 100Mbit that our cable provider is now piping to us. I read the conversion guide but it made no mention of the 501's. Only the 515's or newer. The ASA5505 is putting up a little bit of a fight (This what I get for failing my CCNA??)After refusing to configure the LAN ip address to something other than what it was shipped with, I broke down and connected to the management console and forced an IP address on the LAN side. Now I reset my default config and everyone can get on the internet.Until the ISP cuts you off because you forgot to set your static IP. Oh, and by the way, they dont support Cisco gear.
When I attempt to assign the IP to the outside interface, it accepts without a hitch, but everything grinds to a halt. I cannot have this, as I have off-site users that operate with dedicated ports using Remote Desktop. I've attempted to set the IP via both ASDM and management console. I've tried setting a static route, but that doesnt give me any love either. Im running ASA Version 8.2(1) and ASDM Version 6.2(1)Once I get the static IP set and working properly, I can tackle moving the port configs.

I need to migrate DFM alarm settings data from LMS 3.1 to LMS 4.2.3 and I want to use this method, [URL] , to extract the data from 3.1 and then inport it into 4.2.3.
I successfully performed it for IP settings, it was easy since the data format was the same.
But the format differs quite alot for Interface and Port data, here is an example:
export from LMS 3.1
IF-hostname/17 [Gi0/0.524] [10.55.254.3]; INTERFACE:;IF-hostname/17; MANAGED_STATE:;EXPLICITLY_UNMANAGED
export from LMS 4.2.3
INTERFACE:IF-hostname/17 MANAGED_STATE:MANAGED GigabitEthernet0/0.524
It looks like I have convert interface names, sort and delete stuff to make it look the same.
