Cisco :: 5508 / 4402 - Office Extend Suggestion

Dec 15, 2011

I have attached a diagram of the current topology. At present, we have two 5508 connected to our core. We also have a 4402 behind the firewall (DMZ) just purely for guest access. So the staff users connect to the access point which in turns connects to the Staff WLC 1 (if this fails then to Staff WLC2). any guest user connect to the access point which in turn connects to Staff WLC which anchors to Guest WLC which then provides access. Since the guest is behind the DMZ they can only access the internet and not out internal network.

Now we want to office extend our network - we want our users to use 1132 AP at home to access the Infrastructure. is there a way we can do this without disturbing the existing infrastructure. On reading Cisco website, i know the best practice is to use 2 5508 (one behind the firewall and the other anchored to this access the internet network ) i thought since we have a Cisco (dmz) switch (48 port) and only the 4402  (Guest WLC) is connected to it, maybe purchase another 5508 WLC and connect to the 48 port Cisco (dmz) switch. will this work?

I have finally got my office extend AP to connect to my companies 5508 controller by enabling NAT on the management interface and can see all the cooperate SSID's. However when I try to connect to the SSID my client either gets a local IP address from my home router or then cannot get any IP address.

Cisco Wireless :: 5508 - Multiple Office Extend APs Behind NAT To Single Address

Feb 29, 2012

I have a situation where a user needs more than one office extend AP in his home. My office extend controller is a 5508 running 7.0.220.0. Are there any issues NATing multiple OE APs to a single address? My initial lab results indicate that each of the AP's associate with the controller and establish a DTLS tunnel. I see the SSIDs get pushed to the AP and then it seems to restart the process never being fully operational. Is there a workaround that will allow me to run mutliple OE APs?

Cisco Wireless :: AP 1131 As Office Extend With Local Ssid?

Feb 15, 2012

I have an 1131ag AP attached to our 5508 as an OEAP over the Internet.  Everything with the corporate SSIDs is working correctly, so no issue there.  I was wondering if a local ssid can be configured on the AP, similar to what can be done with the OEAP600, in order to provide wireless access to the Internet only?  On the WLC, on the H_REAP tab, there is a button labeled "Reset Personal SSID"

Cisco Wireless :: Replace 4402 With 5508 Controller

Oct 6, 2012

I'd like to replace my 4402 Wireless controller with a new 5508. I have migrated the exact configuration from my 4404 controller to the 5508 and they are both running the same version of code. I'm worried that if I replace the 4402 with the 5508 controller, the Access Points will not rejoin to the new controller or they will join but will have lost their configuration e.g. AP Name/location etc etc. AP models registered to the existing controller are 1131, 1142 and 3502. I am also using Cisco WCS.

As long as the new controller has the exact same configuration, is it possible to replace the 4404 with the 5508? Will the existing Access Points join the new controller? Is there any other configuration required? I have read about doing this using mobility groups however would rather not if possible.

Cisco Wireless :: Migrating From 4402 To 5508 - AP Compatibility

May 30, 2013

We currently run six 4402 Wireless lan controllers - these are managed by a WCS server - soon to be replaced by Cisco Prime. We run a mixture of LAP1242 and LAP1142 wireless access points. I need to add more but have been told by my supplier that the both these AP's are now end of sale and cannot be purchased.

The replacement AP's are the 2600 series - but I have been told that these are not compatible with my existing 4402 controllers.

To make matters worse I was then advised that if I purchase the new 5580 controllers the older LAP1242 access points will not work with it and require replacing - this, for me, is a lot of access points.

What I need to know is:

What access points, if any, are currently available that are compatible with my 4402 controllers and a future 5508 installation?

I ssem to be in a situation now where I cannot buy any access points that will work with my 4402's but if I upgrade all my current 1242's will not funtion with the new 5508 controller!

Cisco Wireless :: WLC 5508 Tunnel To 4402 Anchor

Jul 5, 2011

We have got a WLC 4402 as an anchor that provides guest internet access to our visitors. Our wan sites have 4402's running a tunnel to this anchor for guest traffic. We have got a new site coming up that will have a 5508 as its WLC. I am trying to determine if the 5508 will successfully form a tunnel with the existing 4402 anchor. I am assuming that it will be ok or maybe the 4402 will require an ios upgrade. Our AP's everywhere are 1131's but the new site will have the later versions which can work with the CAPWAP based 5508.

will the tunnel between the 4402 and 5508 work well or will it require an ios + bootstrap upgrade on the 4402 and subsequently the rest of the 4402's or it will not work altogetherwill the CAPWAP AP's at the new site work well with the 4402 LWAPP anchor - I am assuming that they will since the CAPWAP compatibility requirements are really between the AP and its local WLC. Our 4402's are on 4.2.61.0 and I am proposing to management that we should upgrade these to 7.0.116.0 to prepare the infrastructure for any potential issues.

Cisco Wireless :: 4402 And 5508 Controller Installation

Oct 30, 2012

My client has on cisco 4402 controller running with 48 AP on this. Client requires to add another 25 AP but licence on the current controller is not supported client bought another controller 5508 with 25 AP.

I have been tasked to installe 5508 with conjestion of 4402. I have make the software version on both of them as below

AIR-CT5500-K9-7-0-235-3.aes
AIR-WLC4400-K9-7-0-235-3.aes

To match the same IOS version on both the controller. I have following challenges with me.

- 5508 will registered 25 AP while .. 4408 will continue with 48 AP.
- 5508 is going to be in DC and it will be directly connected to firewall as default gateway for guest SSID. 4402 is going to be on another building.
- How can I make sure that Users connected to AP registered with 4402 will have the same deafult gateway as 5508. Thre is no layer 2 connectivity between this two controllers.
- There is no romaing going to happen between this two controller as both are two different locations and user will leave one location will disconnect and it joines bak when it reach to another controller.
- Is there any way to configure 5508 as master and 4402 as slave kind of connections?

Cisco Wireless :: 4402 Guest Anchor Controller 5508 Software 7.2

Can we create a 2nd tunnel between the same devices ( asa5510 and thei juniper device) as the IP remains same, only the internal remote networks will change for me. do i need to make any changes to the present tunnel??

D-Link DIR-655 :: Suggestion On Expanding Wireless Coverage

Jan 3, 2012

My router (D-LINK DIR-655) is in the living room under my TV in a cabinet with the lid closed (i would like to keep it that way, because the DIR-655 has the brightest led lights ever). My ground floor coverage is decent except in my back yard where i only get 1 bar or lose signal (we are talking about 10-15m distance). I am using mixed G & N mode with auto 20/40 MHz. In the past i had full bars in my back yard using a Linksys WRT54GL (Wireless-G) with DD-WRT firmware.

I have the following devices connected on my router: ISP MODEM / DREAMBOX / HTPC / DNS-325 / TV

1st Floor: I don't have any wireless coverage here, sometimes one bar but keeps dropping. This is where i would like to expand my wireless coverage in the whole floor.

2nd Floor: Here is my attic which i don't basically need any wireless. My main concern is in the 1st floor.

Using POE To Extend Wireless Network

Jan 13, 2012

My b/g/n router is at one end of the house and on the second floor needs to be. I currently have a b/g/n wireless bridge hooked to a LAN port of an b/g/n router that I am using as an access point almost in the center of the house, about thirty feet away with one wall between them. I get good connection speed on an Internet TV that's about 7 feet below the access point with one floor/ceiling between. I get a reliable but slow connection to an Internet TV that is about 20 feet from the access point with two walls between. I get intermittent, slow connections with portable devices near the opposite end of the house on the first floor. Measured horizontally, they are within 15 feet of the upstairs TV that has a slow connection and about 9 feet below it.

The ceiling of my unfinished basement stairwell is a few feet below my router. I am thinking of putting a wireless bridge in the stairwell and connecting it with ethernet cable to an access point located in the crawl space, which is very dry, under the house directly below the upstairs Internet TV. It would be about 12 feet below the TV with a floor and a ceiling/floor between. That location would put it within 15 feet of the wireless devices on the far end of the house that now have a poor connection, with only a floor between. My primary goal is to get a better connection for them, but I'm hoping for a better one to the upstairs TV. My house is of frame construction with mostly plaster interior walls.

I want to use a POE access point under the house because I think it would be easier and safer than running a long extension cord. Looking at POE devices in catalogs, it is often not clear to me whether the device in question expects to be powered over ethernet or expects to power other devices over ethernet.

I have the following questions:

Does my plan sound feasible, and would it be expected to accomplish what I want?

How can I be sure that, when I order a POE access point, it expects to receive power over ethernet, not provide it?

Can POE devices be cascaded? If I do this and find that I did not get the coverage I hoped and, therefore, want to add another POE AP, can I add a POE hub or switch and run cable from it to the additional POE AP? If so, is there any particular monclature for devices that expect to both receive and provide POE? Can such devices receive and provide over any port, or do they have to receive power on a designated one and provide it to the others?
