Cisco WAN :: 2821 - Router Suggestion For Multihoming 100Mbps Internet BGP
Aug 12, 2012
I am looking for a simple router recomendation for multihoming dual 100Mbps internet connections with BGP routing. What are the current best practices regarding required resources for the full Internet BGP routing table? We were thinking of specing a 3945 for this application, but is that overkill? The customer has a 2821 that is not in use, I'm thinking this would be too slow for Internet BGP routing combined with the 100Mbps line speed.

It seems that Cisco mentioned, in their data sheet of 2921 ISR, that it can support up to 50Mbps. However, from Google search, it says 2921 can handle 100Mbps with no problem.I am planning on getting 2921 ISR in small office where only ~10 people are connected to it. And we do have two different line of 100Mbps ISP internet line and wish to share them in the office.I am confused why ~$2k router can not support 100Mbps where ~$100 consumer routhers like Linksys has no problem with handling that speed. The reason why I am planning on 2921 is the rich feature like Voip solution (CME) it offeres. I have several remote offices that needs to be connected with Voip phones. and I could go with UC500 series but it seems to me UC500 does not support IP Phone 9900 series.

Currently we have a 50mb pipe with our carrier SONIC. We have signed another contract with another provider here in town (Charter) to multihome our Internet connections in an active/active configuration. We have leased our /24 space through our carrier SONIC. ARIN has already approved our org-ID for an ASN and they will be sending us that once the billing portion is finished.
There a few design considerations I was hoping I could get some insight from the community on.. Before I start, the ultimate goal for us to use BOTH Internet connections in an active/active configuration - utilizing both pipes..
Disclaimer: I have gathered this design from a lot of other posts that have somewhat of a similiar topology with ASA-->3750-->router pair-->CPE--internet...
What kind of routes should I get from each carrier? I have been told that partial/partial routes plus a default route form each carrier is the way to go. Also, I've heard mention that full routes from both carriers are preferred. My ASR1001's can support ~500k routes. I know the global table is approximately ~337k routes. My goal is to use both pipes and use the best outbound path per carrier.
We will be leasing our /24 space from SONIC. I plan on running OSPF on the DC-Edge-SW1 in conjunction with iBGP - so I can default originate two equal cost routes back to my ASA. My confusion is when the traffic hits DC-Edge-SW1, there will be default equal-cost iBGP routes to both ASR1001's (DC-Edge-RT1 & DC-Edge-RT2). If the switch does not have the BGP table, it will just load-share across both ASR's. When the traffic hits the ASR's, will they know which carrier has the best path and route accordingly?
Should the iBGP connection between both routers be directly connected ? Or will it suffice through the L3 3750 connection? Also, with the limitations on the routes for the ASR1001 at ~500k. If we end up getting full routes from carriers and create a iBGP neighborship between both routers, will this exceed the route limitations on this platform? On both routes, I will have the network statement 'network 12.231.69.0 mask 255.255.255.0.' This is a leased network from SONIC, and we NAT everything on our ASA to 12.231.69.10. My question is, will this be a problem broadcasting this network from our AS to both carriers AS? Refer to bgp-design.jpg - is it a requirement that I use our leased public subnet 12.231.69.0/24 for the interfaces from ASA5510 -> 3750 -> ASR1001?

Currently I'm looking for a way to failover our internet connection from one site to another site over our MPLS line, should that internet connection go down.
My layout: Internet > Cable internet modem (Site B) > ASA 5510 (Site B) > 2821 Router (Site B) > MPLS Line > 2821 Router (Site A) > ASA5510 (Site A) > ISP provider internet router (Site A) > Internet
Facts:Site B is the one with the internet issues. The MPLS line is routed using BGP. [URL]

we have a cisco ASA5510 and our client owns a Juniper device. we already have a vpn tunnel in place between the two locations and its working fine. Now, they have some networks which are in more secure zone, if we add those subnets to the present tunnel we are not able to access them. so what they are suggesting that we can reconfigure the VPN to be a route based VPN instead of policy based OR configure a second VPN tunnel.am not sure of cisco ASA supports route based tunnels???.. Can we create a 2nd tunnel between the same devices ( asa5510 and thei juniper device) as the IP remains same, only the internal remote networks will change for me. do i need to make any changes to the present tunnel??

What is the best way to monitor an Internet Edge router from the Internal network behind the Firewall? We want to pull more information from the edge router like netflow. We can use SNMPv3 and ACLs to keep the router secure.
But I am looking for the best config to keep both the router and firewall as secure as possible while still allowing us to monitor performance and faults.I am running an ASA and a 2821.

I have attached a diagram of the current topology. At present, we have two 5508 connected to our core. We also have a 4402 behind the firewall (DMZ) just purely for guest access. So the staff users connect to the access point which in turns connects to the Staff WLC 1 (if this fails then to Staff WLC2). any guest user connect to the access point which in turn connects to Staff WLC which anchors to Guest WLC which then provides access. Since the guest is behind the DMZ they can only access the internet and not out internal network.
Now we want to office extend our network - we want our users to use 1132 AP at home to access the Infrastructure. is there a way we can do this without disturbing the existing infrastructure. On reading Cisco website, i know the best practice is to use 2 5508 (one behind the firewall and the other anchored to this access the internet network ) i thought since we have a Cisco (dmz) switch (48 port) and only the 4402 (Guest WLC) is connected to it, maybe purchase another 5508 WLC and connect to the 48 port Cisco (dmz) switch. will this work?

My router (D-LINK DIR-655) is in the living room under my TV in a cabinet with the lid closed (i would like to keep it that way, because the DIR-655 has the brightest led lights ever). My ground floor coverage is decent except in my back yard where i only get 1 bar or lose signal (we are talking about 10-15m distance). I am using mixed G & N mode with auto 20/40 MHz. In the past i had full bars in my back yard using a Linksys WRT54GL (Wireless-G) with DD-WRT firmware.
I have the following devices connected on my router: ISP MODEM / DREAMBOX / HTPC / DNS-325 / TV
1st Floor: I don't have any wireless coverage here, sometimes one bar but keeps dropping. This is where i would like to expand my wireless coverage in the whole floor.
2nd Floor: Here is my attic which i don't basically need any wireless. My main concern is in the 1st floor.

I have a PC with a Realtek onboard Ethernet controller, running Windows XP. It's connected to an Asus RT-n16 router loaded with TomatoUSB, via a Cat5e cable. When I set it up a month or two ago, I confirmed that I was getting a Gigabit connection to it--the little network connection icon in the Windows XP taskbar indicated "1.0 Gbps." All well and good. I just happened to check it today, and it now says "100Mbps." Nothing, as far as I know, has changed to the configuration. I went into the Device Manager, and saw that under the driver settings, in "Speed", it was set to "Auto-Negotiate." When I tried setting that to "1.0 Gbps" instead, the network connection icon in XP's taskbar once again indicated "1.0Gbps." As an experiment, I then changed it back to Auto-Negotiate, and once again the taskbar icon read "100Mbps."So I guess I have two questions. 1) Should I leave the driver setting on 1Gbps rather than Auto-Negotiate? (2) Why might the speed have switched from 1Gbps to 100Mbps over the past month if nothing's changed?

Vista 64 Intel Pro 1000 with latest driver Here is a shot of the lagometer in COD Black Ops when all is good. I used to see this with my old WRT54GS and connected at 100Mbps Full Duplex or Half Duplex and I currently see this when connected through the E4200 at 100Mbps full or half duplex AND when connected via Gigabit via one of the 4 ports on the back of my cable modem, a Motorola SBG6580 [URL] This next screen capture is what happens when I try to connect via Gigabit thru the E4200. It either starts out like this right away or within 30 seconds to a minute this will start to occur. I believe the red spikes indicate packet loss. [URL]

We have multiple cisco routers and most of them have dual WAN connections thru different ISPs. So, we use IP SLA monitor with tracking object s to monitor each ISP availability/reliability and switch routing accordingly ( by IOS). So far, it has been working ok. However, recently, we had some ISP high latency and the connection to one ISP will be so slow but the IOS keep seeing it as UP, thus sending traffic thru it. So, I tried to change around the threshold numbers around with no luck. Is there any configuration/commands or tricks that can do the job here? I don't want the users to be the one to detect the Internet slowness and have me manually shut down an interface or change the static routes metrics. here is a sample of my config:
ip sla 1 type echo protocol ipIcmpEcho x.x.x.x isp 1 gateway threshold 3 frequency 5ip sla monitor schedule 1 life forever start-time now
ip sla 2 type echo protocol ipIcmpEcho x.x.x.x isp 2 gateway threshold 3 frequency 5ip sla monitor schedule 2 life forever start-time now

We are using Cisco Wireless solution in our network. Using 4400/5500 WLCs and 3500/1130 series APs.
A new requirement has come up and we need to provide connectivity between two buildings (which are within 1 km) using wireless. This link should be able to give >=100Mbps.
As we already have 3500/1130 APs, can a wireless bridge be established using them which can also give >=100Mbps? Can this be done using a WLC based solution? What I mean is: Do I need to have a standalone AP solution or can it be done while both the APs register to WLC? What are the AP models/antennas that can meet my requirement?

Virgin Media just upgraded my broadband to 100mbps. My main PC is in a place where unfortunately I cannot hard wire it to ethernet, and also the wifi signal is a bit rubbish - therefore I have been using D-Link Powerline AV Homeplugs DHP-307 200Mbps (N.B. I am fully aware that 200mbps doesn't really mean that through homeplugs, please read on)
Ages ago when my I first set this up my connection speed from Virgin Media was 50mbps and, after installing, I tested it a few times and got about 45mbps, which I was happy with.
However, due to the upgrade I thought I would test it again, and now I'm only gettin about 20-25Mbps. I did some diagnistic checks as follows:
A laptop plugged directly into my router via ethernet got 97 Mbps My laptop sitting next to my PC connected via wifi got 54 Mbps My PC connected via wifi with the ethernet/homeplug disconnected got 26 Mbps (I think my wireless card in the PC and the aeriel are both a bit rubbish though anyway)My PC connected via ethernet homeplug with no wifi got 23 Mbps
What I don't understand is:
1 - In the configuration utility for the homeplugs it says that the link speed for this plug is 96 Mbps, so how come that's not coming through?
2 - Why would it have one time been higher and now not? If it wasn't for point 1 above I might put it down to interference in the elecrical circuits, but I thought that's what the link speed would be showing me
I guess the best option would be to try and get VM to install a proper ethernet port in my study, however I can't imagine how they would do this without running cables through the house, which I don't want, so I'm trying to exhaust other options. I'm happy to ditch the homeplugs if there is something better.
