Cisco Wireless :: Using AP541N As A Bridge With RV220W

Sep 25, 2011

trying to get my new router and bridge to work I am close to give up.

1. I have bought a RV220W router this will be connected to Internett and all wireless devices will connect to it. It seems to work fine. I have enabled on AP profile where others easyli can access internett through router WAN port

2. I have bought a AP541 Access point that i want to have as a bridge (We earlier used 3COM without problems) Some Computers and other stuff like printers  will be connected to this through a switch for the Ethernet port on AP541. (I dont want any clients to connect wireless to AP541N)

Before I start asking detailed questions, i want to verify that my setup is possible. Reading the Information on the shops webpage clearly states that AP541N can work in bridge mode, but struggling to find any good explenation makes me wonder if this really is true.

Can Cisco AP541N works as a bridge together with RV220W.

Cisco Wireless :: Connect AP541N To RV220W To Use Same SSID

May 21, 2012

I would like to connect the AP541N to the RV220W and use the same SSID assigned to both throughout the office, for seemless client movement.  I would like to keep the AP541N connected via the internet cable, as it will be on a switch which is on the same segment.  The access point has many different configuration methods available, but the router appears to only have WDS as an option to connect the two devices.  I would rather not use the WDS feature on the AP, as I want to utilize as much bandwidth available as possible, and I assume using that method I would need to remove the ethernet cable from the switch.

Is it as simple as configuring both devices with identical VLAN settings?  I am preconfiguring the devices before installing them, as to minimize downtime, so would like to make sure the configuration is correct.

Cisco Wireless :: AP541N Bridge With WPA2

Aug 23, 2010

I purchased quite a few of these APs as they listed the ability to function in WPA2-PSK mode, but on initial configuration I see that this may only apply to standard AP mode?  Is there any way to configure WPA2-PSK on an AP541 to AP541 bridge?  Unfortunately, this is a must have for our client.  If not, what would allow for this with an external antenna port?

COundt access them but they were still delivering 'wireless' so to speak I have recently put them back to defaults to try and get them back in to CCA. i had one, but not the other. They would work fine via GUI/web access. Then i updated them to 2.0.4 (both images) and since doing that i have no access to either of them via any form.

Cisco Wireless :: Misconfiguration Of Management ACL On AP541N-A-K9

Nov 20, 2012

I mistakenly mis-configured "Management ACL mode" on my AP541N.

Administration>Administration Access Control>Managment ACL Mode

I set this to "Enabled", the problem is I only entered 1 IP address, and that IP address is the SAME IP as the AP's own internal interface.  I was not thinking and entered that IP out of habit when I meant to enter my workstation's IP.  The FW does not have a safeguard against this.

So, as you can see, this is a big problem, because now I have completely cut off all access (That I can think of) to the router.  I can never access the AP as that IP because if I set my workstation to that IP, 1) There will be an address conflict, 2) My computer won't route traffic to the AP out its NIC because it recognizes that IP as itself.

Cisco Wireless :: AP541N Drops All Clients?

Jun 20, 2010

As I posted about in the other AP541N thread about degraded performance, mine did a strange client disconnect last week. It dropped all authenticated clients, but they all thought they were still connected. A quick disable/enable of the wireless card on the laptop would get the computer back on the AP.

This same thing happened again today.

Cisco Wireless :: AP541N Connectivity And Web Management

Apr 18, 2013

we have two AP541n APs that were clustered togehter.  They are powered using PoE.  The other day I discovered one of them wasn't working properly.  I couldn't log into it from the web interface so I unplugged it and plugged it back in from the PoE switch.  That didn't work.  Since then I have taken it off the network and have tried to reset it and I still can't access it.  I've tried connecting to it from the default IP, which according to the admin guide is 192.168.10.10, and that doesn't work.  I have tried using Telnet and SSH to connect to it using the default IP and the static IP we had set for it.  I have set up a little linksys router and plugged the AP and a laptop into it in hopes it might get DHCP, but that hasn't worked either.  I have also noticed the WLAN 2.4G and WLAN 5G lights are not coming on.  The PWR, SPEED, and LAN lights all come on.  The DIAG light comes on when it's furst plugged in and then turns off.  Right now it is not plugged into PoE so that light is off too.  We had both APs plugged into an ESW-520 that was plugged into a UC560 which had recently been updated to the latest firmware: 8.6.1. The short story is I don't have any connectivity to my AP541n, even after being reset. No wireless, no Web GUI, no ping, nothing.  Has this thing become a large paperweight?

Cisco Wireless :: AP541N Keeps Dropping Connections

Mar 6, 2013

I have 2 AP541N's set up using a WDS bridge, broadcasting a single SSID. I am using WPA-PSK for the bridge and WPA/ WPA2 and CCMP (AES) on the SSID. I only have around 75 (Mac, PC, iPad, iPhone and Android) devices that use wireless. Some are laptops that roam around from AP to AP, and are using LAN when they are not roaming. I have increased the roaming agressiveness on PC clients and this doesn't seem to have resolved the weak connection. At most, I have 50 clients trying to access the wireless at one time. My problem is that they keep on dropping the connections and have real problems reconnecting once it's dropped. After 4 or 5 tries, they may or not be able to reconnect.

Cisco Wireless :: AP541N - Computer Not Switching Between AP's

Jan 4, 2011

when moving throughout our building my laptop will not switch between AP’s unless it loses its connection with its existing AP then it will see the other AP that is closer and connect to it.

For example, I start at one end of the building where it connects to AP#1 at 270Mbps, if I then slowly go to another section of the building, the speed will drop all the way down to 24Mbps, but it will not switch over to AP#2 unless I turn off AP#1 then the laptop instantly switches to AP#2 at 160Mbps. Again the same behavior if I start walking back the other direction. The laptop will not disconnect from AP#2 until the signal is lost.

With my 2.4GHz wireless 802.11g AP’s (WAP200) I can roam around the building and the laptop will happily jump between AP’s always staying with the faster of the two available.

Settings are all pretty basic.

Mode is set to 5GHz 802.11n Channel is set to AutoA single SSID is running WPA Personal using wpa2, CCMP (AES)Channel is set to AutoChannel Bandwidth is set to 40MHzClustering is enabled and the AP’s see each other just fine.

Cisco Wireless :: Are There Multiple Models Of AP541N

Nov 6, 2011

We are considering order the AP541N for our network. A few questions...

1). Are there multiple models of the AP541N? or just one cisco part number?

2). I am assuming the basic antenna comes with it. If this is something that I need to buy seperate.

3). Are there part numbers for the POE injector? Need to know part numbers on the AP541N and the poe injectors?

4). We would buy a couple of these and run them in cluster mode. My understanding is that I won't need a controller. Do I need to buy a certain model to use the clustering or is that available on all the AP541N?

5). Can I have this talk to active directory to authenticate users? Is that tough to do? Do I need install some kind of agent on a domain controller? I have configured the ASA to use Active Directory for authentications. Should it be any more difficult that that?

I have setup a few other Cisco APs before and am generally familair with wireless. But, I am not a "wireless expert" and don't have any experience with this particular product.

Cisco Wireless :: Difference Between WAP321 And AP541N?

May 21, 2012

I was looking for some clarification on the capabilities of these devices to allow roaming of clients between AP's.  Take a basic scenario of 3 AP's and a single SSID.  I know the AP541N has clustering which uses the Fast Client Roaming Protocol, which basically does a quick re-connect to the new AP.  Not quite as seamless as using aironet and a controller, but still pretty good.

Question 1 How does the WAP321 handle roaming?  Obviously without the clustering feature you would have to configure each AP independently.  But after setting them up, would it support roaming in a similiar way to the AP541N??

Question 2 Would running three standalone Aironet 1141's operate any differently in terms of roaming?

In summary I like the roaming capability of the AP541N but hate the large clunky form factor.  I need something that can be mounted in an office environment (ceilings) that will handle easy client roaming.  A short disconnect isn't a concern as long as it reconnects on it's own.   Wireless controllers are a little out of the price range for this setup.

Cisco Wireless :: SA520W And AP541N Are Not Repeating Traffic?

Jul 15, 2010

Any AP that would be able to wrielessly repeat traffic to my SA520W (so that the AP has no ehternet wiring at all).  First off, there is no WDS option anywhere in the SA520W, so there is no method for which to simply create a WDS link between the two devices.  Yet the Factory Default Settings table in the SA520W Admin guide indicates there should be (search on WDS in the PDF to find this). both at the lack of integration of these Small Business Pro devices, and moreso at the fact that I was told that these two would be compatible for wireless-only repeating.  I've been messing around for hours trying to get something to happen.  Maybe I'm just missing something obvious as this is my first time trying to get an AP to talk wireless-only to a wireless capable internet gateway device (the SA520W).

Cisco Wireless :: WDS Bridging Between AP541N And WAP4410N Incompatible?

May 19, 2012

I 've bought an AP541N & WAP4410N for the purpose to wireless(ly) bridge my TV with the Internet. The AP541N is connected to a AS5505 > Internet. My TV is connected to the ethernet port of the WAP4410N. (Also tried my laptop) I 've set WDS bridging on both APs:

- with and without encryption

- with same and different SSID and/or channel

In AP541N I can see that the WDS is up. However I cann't ping the WAP441N (hardset IP-address in same subnet as AP541N) from the AP541N. Therefore not strange that my TV/laptop doesn't get an ip-address through DHCP.

Although I tried this for home purposes, I gathered that if it worked it would be a nice SMB solution. I 'm a freelancer and I want to be sure that what I propose as a solution/option actually works.

I 've read in this forum that it might not work because of incompatible chipsets? If this is the case Cisco should mention in the datasheets so I don't waste my money or loose my credibility !

2) The second VAP I only wish to give internet access and no access at all to our internal network (for guest access). I am also using HTTP redirect with this.

how can I achieve the setup in number (2)? This is to give internet access, but not share the internal network.

Cisco Wireless :: AP541N Clustering And Roaming Clarifications

Dec 5, 2011

I'm looking to deploy a 2504 controller and some AP1142s but would like to provide the client with an alternative, lower initial-cost option in my proposal.  I've been researching the AP541N access points but several areas of their implementation seem unclear to me.

Clustering: For the clustering feature is it necessary for the network to have other SBCS components (500 series platforms)? All of their other features are either unapplicable to or already implemented in the network in question; if I have to add another appliance I would rather go the LWAPP route and use a true WLC.

What are the cababilities of clustering? Can I implement some form of wireless resilience by spacing APs closer together than necessary and they will lower transmit dBm and intelligently respond to attempt to cover a new cell where an AP has gone down?

What about roaming? I believe Cisco advertises this as part of a small business voice solution. A client roaming between two access points in the same mobility group (cluster?) on a wireless voip phone should be able to keep connection, as it's analogus to some critical UDP communications that are going to take place on the clients.
