Default Gateway Switches To Cable Modem?

Apr 28, 2012

Lastnight I power cycled my cable modem, and router in an attempt to get a Slingbox to work. What ended up happening is that after the modem and router came back online all the computers on my wired home network changed their default gateway to the IP of the modem and not the router. Two of the computers are fixed now, but one of the laptops is still not able to get to the internet using DHCP. I can use a static IP with the correct default gateway for the router, and succesfully get to the internet, but then I can't see my server on my netowrk. And the same is true in reverse, in order to see my server I have to go back to DHCP, but I can't get on the internet

Verizon FIOS Modem - Default Gateway Is Not Available?

Feb 13, 2012

For some reason, whenever I go home (I'm in college right now), my internet goes haywire. It'll connect for about an hour or so when I first load it up, but after that, it refuses to connect at all. If I restart my modem (verizon fios modem), then it'll connect for about 5 minutesIf I run the troubleshooter, sometimes it doesn't detect anything wrong with it, and other times, it says "the default gateway is not available"[CODE]

Modem And Router (D-Link DIR-601) DHCP Giving Out Wrong Default Gateway

Nov 6, 2012

So network was running fine for about a year or so. Network consists of 1 Motorola SB6120 cable modem attached to a D-Link DIR-601 wireless router. All settings were default except for SSID and WPA password. One day I just couldn't access internet anymore. I've narrowed it down to the default gateway that is being given out through DHCP. The default gateway that is being given out is the IP of the modem (192.168.100.1) and not of the Router (192.168.0.1). I can't find any option on Wireless router to be able to force the gateway address when handing out the gateway IP. Theoretically I thought I should be able to put router on same subnet as modem as 192.168.100.2 but that still doesn't work. If I set the IP adresses statically on the PCs and give it the Gateway of the Router everything works fine. I should mention this is for my boss' house and basically I dont want him calling me everytime he has a friend come over and I have to talk em through setting up a Static IP.

And just for an example this is what I get if I use DHCP:

IP Address: 192.168.0.155
Mask: 255.255.255.0
DNS: 192.168.0.1
Default Gateway: 192.168.100.1

And If I want it to work I have to change the default gateway to 192.168.0.1 I've tried updating routers firmware and reset to factory default numerous times. Is it possible for a router DHCP stop working?

Cisco Switches :: SG300 Static Route Default Gateway Per VLAN

Jul 27, 2011

We have recently purchased a Cisco SG300 and have been configuring it. [code] The VLANs have ACLs set up to prevent any communication between the Holly and Tempo VLANs (and their associated WAN VLANs).Each VLAN has a WAN available for it's use, which connects to external networks (including the Internet). In order to facilitate this, we have set up all the necessary ACLs and routes and confirmed that this all works. However, the problem comes when we assign the static routes that specify the default gateways. We add the two static routes below:

-0.0.0.0 next hop 10.10.200.254 metric 1
-0.0.0.0 next hop 192.168.200.254 metric 1

In this case, only one of the VLANs has WAN access.  It is either Holly or Tempo (it can be either if the order the static route is added is changed). What we need is to force Holly to use Holly WAN and Tempo to use Tempo WAN, but we cannot see a way of doing this.Effectively, we want the following static routes: [code]

Cisco WAN :: SG500-24 - Switches Between Cable Modem And Router?

Feb 25, 2013

Currently, my Cisco DPC3010 cable modem is connected directly to one of the Ethernet ports on my Linux router.  All works quite well that way.  However, I'm curious to know if there's some what to separate the router and cable modem over 2 switches?

The coax enters the house in my living room and connects to the CM there.  The router is also sitting in the living room, and it's connected to a Cisco SG200-18 switch.  I have Ethernet running from my living room to my basement, where a Cisco SG500-24 switch sits.  The two switches are connected via a 2xGigE port channel.

I want to move the router into the basement.  Ideally, I'd like to move the CM down there with it, but I don't have the necessary coax run.  So for now, that's out.  But... can I go from something like this:

--coax----- Cable Modem ---GigE----- Router ---GigE---- SG200-18 ===2xGigE==== SG500-24

To something like this:

--coax----- Cable Modem ---GigE-----  SG200-18 ===2xGigE==== SG500-24 ---GigE----- Router

I tried it, complete with a separate VLAN specifically for the CM traffic.  And the VLAN was properly trunked between the two switches.   But for some reason, the router was unable to communicate via IP to the upstream.  I'm not sure if there are config bits I need to set on the SG200 that the CM is connected to?  I thought I'd read somewhere that CMs don't like broadcast technology such as LLDP and/or CDP, so I disabled both of those on its port.  Did I miss something else perhaps?  Or am I trying to do the impossible?

For what it's worth: the IP connectivity is static.  There's no DHCP running between my router and the upstream cable provider.  The cable modem is literally acting as a L2 coax-->Ethernet convertor, more or less.

I then started the set up wizard and followed the instructions, turning things on in specific order etc. After input the IP and DNS info it reports an error and tells me to check the address information is correct. My internet is a static IP connection (so it tells me and the IP information doesn't change).

Default Gateway Not Available

May 3, 2012

Periodically, I drop internet everywhere around my college's campus. I'm literally four feet from a router, but it doesn't seem to matter. I'll disconnect, run troubleshooter, and I'll get the error message saying that the default gateway is not available. My college is designed for Macs, but I'm running Windows 7. My Mac colleagues do not experience problems. The computer works at home and at nearly every other wireless network I've brought it in range of. Specifically, either IBM or Dell.

Linksys Cable / DSL :: WCG200 Bridge Mode From Wireless-G Cable Gateway To Wired?

Mar 14, 2013

Our family has about three computers that use a wireless network that we all share. We have an old Gateway, a WCG200, that is bridged to an E2000, which was set-up ever since we required better security when someone used our connection to illegally obtain movies. We got a letter which warned us of any future violations that could cause legal action, so we looked into our wireless connection to better secure it from any other individuals outside of our household. The WCG200 is connected to the outlet in the wall via cable, and then connects from the Ethernet to the E2000. The E2000 has a stronger security setup than the WCG200, which is the advice we received from our ISP and would allow us to keep the Gateway. It provides a strong signal, but from time to time, we suffer latency or slow loading through all of our online devices, even though our connection speed displays a solid 72.0 Mbps. I've tried the Event Viewer to see any problems, and I have noticed some small things:

- WLAN AutoConfig service has successfully stopped.Wirel?

- WLAN Extensibility Module has stopped. Module Path: C:WindowsSystem32cmihvsrv64.dll

- The server {E10F6C3A-F1AE-4ADC-AA9D-2FE65525666E} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

- Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet: The network link is down.  Check to make sure the network cable is properly connected. [This last one is strange, since I use the Wireless Network Connection with a DW1501 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card, while the Broadcom adapter is under the Local Area Connection and displayed as not connected.]

Other than that, I'm not quite sure what the recurring problem comes from. Our WCG200 has a firewall enabled and our E2000 has an SPI firewall enabled. The security mode of the E2000 is a WPA2 setup. We have disabled the wireless network of our WCG200 in order to make use of the E2000.

Mar 28, 2012

I am trying to get rid of 2 old 2651xm's and 2 2950's from my CCNA days and want to get into the ASA realm. Can I be able to use the ASA, not only as a security appliance / firewall, but also be able to write the access lists, etc, to be able to use this as my router to push packets to and from my internal LAN to the outside world? I guess I should have stated as this being the front end device to my network, just after my DSL Cable modem, that is..and being the only device. I am trying to have this as my main router /firewall solution and then I have an old Linksys router I will pipe off one of the L2 ports to have an AP for my wireless devices? Media Disconnected And Default Gateway Not Available

Dec 28, 2012

I had problems connecting to my wireless internet for extended periods of time with my lease expiring almost instantly. Nobody else in my house had trouble connecting, only me. Troubleshooting the connection only showed that the default gateway was not available and failed to allow me to connect despite "fixing" the problem. I attempted the ipconfig/renew, netsh int ip reset reset.log, and netsh winsock reset catalog operations in cmd as an administrator to no avail. Finally, as a last resort, I reset my modem and that finally allowed me to connect although occasionally I would be kicked off the connection and have to restart the modem again. I would still like to know the problem and a possible solution since my friends seem to have a similar problem with their wireless internet.
