View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running XP Professional 32 bit SP3 on a Dell workstation.I am in a serviced office with internet connection via single ethernet port. This is set up as a VLAN for which I have 4 assigned IP addresses.I am using a Netgear GS605v4 switch to create a small network on my side of the port. Hooked to this is the workstation, the mybook live, and a laptop. All 3 connected components are assigned their IP addresses by DHCP. Both the workstation and the laptop can see the internet without difficulty. The networking of the components is another matter. Focusing on the workstation for the moment:On the workstation, I can ping the mybook. I have always been able to see its upnp logo in My Network Places, and double clicking always takes me to the web browser based dashboard where I can set up the device. I was initially able to see the public folder in My Network Places too, and could map a drive to this in an Explorer window. Typically after some time, the mapping would be lost (even without re-booting the machine), but I would be able to delete the connection and re-map it. After several attempts at this I could no longer map the drive or see the public folder in My Network Places anymore. After much internet searching and playing with lots of the suggested fixes (checking all required services available, matching user names between XP and the drive, playing with 'net view' etc) I was finally able to see and map the public folder yesterday by playing with the 'enable netbios' function in network connections (currently set to 'enable' from 'default' though this had not made any difference previously). I could see the drive in 'net view' though no master browser was listed, and once again map to the public folder, and access files on it.On turning on the workstation this morning I find that the mapping has again been lost. This time net view is back to reporting a system 53 error. I can ping the drive and use the dashboard, and I can see the public folder in My Network Places, but clicking it or mapping to it results in the usual 'network path not found' errors. The laptop is running Windows 7 and has not lost its mapping overnight, and can still access the public files.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAt work we have a private network set up so that any computer that is plugged into the wall is on the same network. (i.e. all ip addresses are identical except for the last block of numbers)All machines are running WinXP.We have one computer set up as a file server (computer with shared folders) that is plugged into a wall socket. We have 3 other machines that can see and access the shared folder on the server computer once they are plugged into a wall socket. The odd thing is that these 3 machines have different settings as far as I can tell. They are all on different workgroups but they have no problem finding the shared folder. However, when I go to plug my laptop into a wall socket, I am not able to map a network drive. The error msg says it cannot find the drive. I have my laptop set-up on the same workgroup as the server computer and the server computer can see my laptop. But when I double click on my laptop in the server computer workgroup I get a msg saying permission is denied.
My laptop can connect to the internet, but cannot find the shared drive. I have tried turning off my laptop firewall, the server firewall, both firewalls etc with no success. In my Local Area Connections I have the following all enabled "Client for Microsoft Networks", "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks", "QoS Packet Scheduler", "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)".
I have a WRVS4400N router and have successfully connected via Quick VPN Client 1.3.0.3 from my laptop running XP. I can ping any IP on my network, I can access HTTP addresses and remote desktop (VNC) applications but I cannot map a network drive.
The network drive is on a PC running XP, I have tried mapping using the system name as well as the ip and neither work. There are no problems mapping the drive(s) when connected directly to the router LAN/WLAN.
what is the difference between network drive and map drive?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have never had to share an Ubuntu drive to windows before, and I never thought it would end up being this difficult. What I need to do is share my 500gb drive in ubuntu, it is a secondary drive, not the primary with the OS on it, to my windows xp and my windows 7 machines. So far I have samba installed on the ubuntu machine and I have formatted and set everything up. The issue is that I just cant figure out how to connect to it in windows becuase when i use the map network drive feature it says something about no network found.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently set up a an external hard drive as a UPnP media server through my router. My media devices and my computer can see the drive fine. My question is, what is the best way to add files to the drive? It seems like a hassle to plug it into a computer directly every time I want to add more files, and FTP is kind of clunky. Is there any sort of software I can put on the drive or any better way to drop files onto it?I'm using a Seagate 2TB USB Drive formatted as FAT32 connected to a lemonade-equipped Westell 7501 router. I understand that it may be that I'm trying to get too high tech with my $7 router, but it seems that there should be a better solution.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have several computers on a network hooked to a server. All of these computers are running XP and have are mapped to a drive on my server. The problem is, once in a while the mapped drive will suddenly not be there. I can manually remap them and sometimes I have to remap 2 or 3 times before it keeps.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have w7 and the D-Link DIR-655 router.I just replaced the same router that crapped out on me.I'm online with no issues but for some reason, I can't map some of my computers to one another. At first, it seemed like it was going well on a couple of them. Others ask for the windows password.I'm not sure, but I think it's the Homegroup password?I remember one of the the homegroup passwords and all computers are joined, but the only password I recall/know isn't working on any computers.
Questions: Can't I map network drives through the router functionality and do away with the homegroups altogether? I'd really like to do that. I'm not really impressed with homegroups.
if the answer is no, how the heck to I figure out or get new passwords? This wasn't an issue in the past. Not sure if somehow, I changed a setting? While searching around, I found the "manage credentials" area. Never noticed before.
I have a medium enviroment with 2 x Cat4500 switches and 50 x Cat3650 plus few Cat3750 switches. I'm looking for a network mapping tool to map all the network equipment so I can easy to manage or trouble shoot the network. It doesn't matter if it's free or paid but something I can try first before buy.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a windows 7 desktop with an SSD and regular mechanical hard drive where I keep my data. I also have a laptop with a small SSD as well. I wanted to keep the laptop free of non-critical data so I decided to setup a file share between my desktop (Windows 7 home prem) and my laptop (Windows 7 pro). I was able share the files and navigate to my desktop through my laptop. I successfully mapped the folder as a network drive and all was well. Then I rebooted and I was disconnected from it, it remembered that it was there but I needed to manually connect to it and I needed to provide my login credentials. There is no password just a username.
What is causing this and is there a way to get around this? Also is there a way to set a timeout because if my desktop is not on and I want to use my laptop, the boot times are much longer compared to when I don't have the mapped network drive on my laptop at all.
I'm trying to see if I can fix my friend's NAS which apparently has some pretty important data on it that wasn't saved anywhere else. They actually had the Geeksquad look at it and they've come to the same conclusion I have so far, but I figured I would ask the internet before I gave the thing back to them and said Geeksquad was right.
Anyways, they have this 5 drive RAIDed NAS which apparently just stopped showing up on their network. I borrowed it from them to see if I could figure it out. It turns on just fine and my router assigns it an IP address, but the IP address just takes me to a blank LaCie dashboard screen. It's weird because it's clearly running it's web server because it's just a gray background with an empty white box and "(c) LaCie 2010" at the bottom. No content at all.
Additionally, I tried installing the LaCie Network Assistant on my home computer and it says it cannot find any network disks. I've tried the "wake up a device" where I enter the mac address, but that doesn't do anything.
All the lights are solid blue on the front and over all the drives so it doesn't appear a drive has failed or something. Even so, that wouldn't really explain the blank dashboard right?
My WLSE 1030 hard drive failed and I have replaced it with a new drive but when I boot from the 2.15 recovery CD the disc boots and runs, within the console connection I get the error "ERROR: version information not found in flash" the disc is the ejected and the system reboots. How can I reload the system software.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI keep having pop-ups from my McAfee informing me that an unknown device is attempting or has connected to my network which I don't understand as my wireless router is encrypted with a password. My neighbours aren't likely to be technical enough to break this and the signal isn't exactly strong anyway so is unlikely to reach much further outside, that being said I always mark them as intruders. Now I continuosly get pop ups saying "a device you marked as introduer has connected to your network. Mcafee has blocked the device from accessing your pc". or words to that effect. what's the difference between this 'network' and my internet? I don't really understand what it's saying, I haven't set up any network that I know of... none of my computers are 'linked' so to speak.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm a newb at this stuff and hope someone will take pity on me and point me in the right direction? In a nutshell, we run a SBS2008 server at work with 20 users. Our company has a domain name which, via DNS hosting is pointed to our static IP. Email address's are handled via the server using Exchange 2007. Documents and files are stored on a data drive on the server (lets call it Server 1). We have now setup a second business with a different domain. I now have 10 users who will need access to the files on Server 1, but will run under a different domain (and need different email addresses) and need to have access to files stored on Server 1 and the new Server 2. The current setup is simple. ADSL comes into the server room and goes to a modem/wireless. From there it goes to the server which handles the DHCP. The server is in turn connected to a 24 port switch which then feeds the workstationsI have access to purchase another server and whatever hardware is required. No amount of Googling matches my scenario hence my question. What I'm really after is a mudmap showing setup or the right way to set this up

The problem is that the main PCB has a realtek chip which I believe has the most basic webserver abilities that is used in the most basic way possible. To use it ARP commands were used to assign an IP address to the chips MAC address e.g. something like: arp -s 192.168.2.5 00-05-a4-00-a8-f8(the actual MAC address was lost along with the HD)So now I'm starting from scratch in XP, how do I find the MAC address in the first place?

The router needs to be security enabled...the equipments needs to be a router by defination (not a layer 3 switch)..As per my understanding there is limitation on number of HWIC-2 FE that can be put in ISR G2 series due to which I cannot reach that figure...
Kindly let me know if i can use SM-ES3-16-P in the place of HWIC-2FE for this kind of requirement.
What is the difference between networking and network programming? Is it the same? If no, then does networking involve programming using languages such as c++ and java? Im thinking of doing a networking course and I don't know basics in any computer languages such as C++, Java and stuff. Can the course be done w/o any knowledge of languages I mentioned above whatsoever?

Then I have 3 computers connecting to this router (local IP 192.168.1.2-4).Assuming I want to access a network drive named "ADrive" (on the same corporate LAN) from any of those 3 PCs, how do I do it? ("\ADrive" does not work, neither does replacing the network drive name with its IP, cannot ping either - it's like I'm on a totally separate network).

It just continuously prompts for username/password.She is running Win 7 Pro, server is Server 2008. The server is on a domain, she is not. She already has a mapped drive to a different folder on the same server as well as to a folder on another server. We are trying to map using the IP address (\IPFolder) and have tried putting the username as IPUsername and just Username with no luck. Tried mapping with net use. Found some stuff online about changing some registry values - tried that. Change the network type from "Home" to "Work" and still no luck.
