Mapping A Shared Ubuntu Drive In Windows 7?

Jul 7, 2012

I have never had to share an Ubuntu drive to windows before, and I never thought it would end up being this difficult. What I need to do is share my 500gb drive in ubuntu, it is a secondary drive, not the primary with the OS on it, to my windows xp and my windows 7 machines. So far I have samba installed on the ubuntu machine and I have formatted and set everything up. The issue is that I just cant figure out how to connect to it in windows becuase when i use the map network drive feature it says something about no network found.

Sharing :: Mapping Network Drive Windows XP

Aug 8, 2011

At work we have a private network set up so that any computer that is plugged into the wall is on the same network. (i.e. all ip addresses are identical except for the last block of numbers)All machines are running WinXP.We have one computer set up as a file server (computer with shared folders) that is plugged into a wall socket. We have 3 other machines that can see and access the shared folder on the server computer once they are plugged into a wall socket. The odd thing is that these 3 machines have different settings as far as I can tell. They are all on different workgroups but they have no problem finding the shared folder. However, when I go to plug my laptop into a wall socket, I am not able to map a network drive. The error msg says it cannot find the drive. I have my laptop set-up on the same workgroup as the server computer and the server computer can see my laptop. But when I double click on my laptop in the server computer workgroup I get a msg saying permission is denied.

My laptop can connect to the internet, but cannot find the shared drive. I have tried turning off my laptop firewall, the server firewall, both firewalls etc with no success. In my Local Area Connections I have the following all enabled "Client for Microsoft Networks", "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks", "QoS Packet Scheduler", "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)".

Mapping Network Drive On Netgear Switch?

Aug 24, 2012

I am running XP Professional 32 bit SP3 on a Dell workstation.I am in a serviced office with internet connection via single ethernet port. This is set up as a VLAN for which I have 4 assigned IP addresses.I am using a Netgear GS605v4 switch to create a small network on my side of the port. Hooked to this is the workstation, the mybook live, and a laptop. All 3 connected components are assigned their IP addresses by DHCP. Both the workstation and the laptop can see the internet without difficulty. The networking of the components is another matter. Focusing on the workstation for the moment:On the workstation, I can ping the mybook. I have always been able to see its upnp logo in My Network Places, and double clicking always takes me to the web browser based dashboard where I can set up the device. I was initially able to see the public folder in My Network Places too, and could map a drive to this in an Explorer window. Typically after some time, the mapping would be lost (even without re-booting the machine), but I would be able to delete the connection and re-map it. After several attempts at this I could no longer map the drive or see the public folder in My Network Places anymore. After much internet searching and playing with lots of the suggested fixes (checking all required services available, matching user names between XP and the drive, playing with 'net view' etc) I was finally able to see and map the public folder yesterday by playing with the 'enable netbios' function in network connections (currently set to 'enable' from 'default' though this had not made any difference previously). I could see the drive in 'net view' though no master browser was listed, and once again map to the public folder, and access files on it.On turning on the workstation this morning I find that the mapping has again been lost. This time net view is back to reporting a system 53 error. I can ping the drive and use the dashboard, and I can see the public folder in My Network Places, but clicking it or mapping to it results in the usual 'network path not found' errors. The laptop is running Windows 7 and has not lost its mapping overnight, and can still access the public files.

Cisco VPN :: Mapping Network Drive On WRVS4400N Router

Mar 13, 2011

I have a WRVS4400N router and have successfully connected via Quick VPN Client 1.3.0.3 from my laptop running XP.  I can ping any IP on my network, I can access HTTP addresses and remote desktop (VNC) applications but I cannot map a network drive.

The network drive is on a PC running XP, I have tried mapping using the system name as well as the ip and neither work.  There are no problems mapping the drive(s) when connected directly to the router LAN/WLAN.

Connection To Shared Drive Lost Over Wireless

Jan 4, 2011

My problem: Shared network drive (folder), when accessed over wireless from more than 1 PC (2 or 3) simultaneously, drops everywhere with a "The specified network name is no longer available" (in Windows Explorer), or "File cannot be read" (in a program). And I don't mean accessing the same file; yes, the files I've tried with are in the same folder, but when the connection is lost a)one client is streaming video from one file and b)another client is copying over some other file to the same folder. It even happens, for example, when one client is transferring a file, and another tries to list the folder. The connection for the file transfer is immediately lost.

My setup: Home network. 4 clients (3 laptops - 2 running XP and one running windows 7, and a desktop, running windows XP). 1 server, running windows server 2003 Enterprise Edition, 2Gb RAM, 2.66 Celeron CPU, and with a 1.3 TB Shared drive partition. The idea is to use the server as a NAS. The desktop and the server are connected via 100MBit UTP/Ethernet, to a DLINK DI-604 Router (WAN port of the router used for Internet). To another one of the LAN ports is connected a Wireless router, NETGEAR WGT624 v3. Wireless connection for the laptops is established at 54 Mbits. The share is mainly used for movies and music sharing between the PCs. When using the shared drive from the desktop (or if I use a LAN cable to plug directly to the DI) I have zero connection problems. For the wireless, however, as I mentioned before, the second I do two twings on two different machines that are connected over wireless simultaneously (and I've tried *all* combinations) the connection is lost for 5 seconds, which is not significant, but enough to be annoying if watching a movie or trying to use the "robust" file transfer of Windows.

What I've tried so far: Perfmon was showing that Page Reads were high, so I upgraded the RAM TO 2Gb(previously the server had only 1Gb or RAM). I tried having each client map the drive using its own account, that did not work either. I've been dealing with shared drives a lot (on win 2000-win 2008 servers), but not nearly as bad of behavior. Worst I've had is having to remap the drives every once in a while if not used or a client gets restarted and loses the mapping. However, I've dealt primarily with sharing over Ethernet, and not WiFi. I'm not a rookie by any means (I've covered CCNA and have done quite a bit of sys admin work as a hobby) I've done all of the basic troubleshooting, the problem is very specific and not a general networking problem by any means.

Unable To Set A Hard Drive Partition To Be Shared?

Feb 18, 2013

Two physical drives. Drive 0 has two partitions C and D. C is operating system (XP Pro) and D is data only. Drive 1 has one partition F and is used for internal backup. Drive F can be set to be shared. Partition D on Drive 0 will not accept sharing. It reverts back to the $D admin share after setting up a new share. The icon (hand) that indicates shared drive does not appear either. I assume there is a registry setting that has drive 1 blocked, but am unable to find it.

Sharing :: New Wireless Router Doesn't Connect To Shared Network Drive

Oct 25, 2012

Our previous wireless router (Netgear Rangemax wpn802) died yesterday so I went out and bought a Western Digital My Net N900. The issue is that now anyone using the wireless signal can't connect to a shared network folder that they were previously able to connect to using the old router.

I'm not able to log into the old router to see any of its settings. I do have access to the server that has the shared folder - I just don't have any idea what needs to be set in order for the N900 to allow me through to the shared folder - whether it's on the router side or the server side.

Protocols / Routing :: Secure Wifi / Public Shared Drive One Computer

Jan 6, 2012

I am trying come up with a setup that allows for a computer to simultaneously be connected to the web via a secure wireless network and to provide a shared drive via an unsecured (possibly ad hoc) wireless network.Which is to say, the computer needs to be able to use the web wirelessly via the secure network, and people need to be able to share files with it wirelessly whether or not THEY can use the secure wifi. One last requirement is that I need a this to be something that I can set up in a given location with no more configuration than required to connect to the secured wifi - if the setup requires me to mess around with the configuration of the router for the secure network itself, it won't work.

Linksys Wireless Router :: Doesn't See Shared USB Drive Connected To E3000

Jan 15, 2012

I have a E3000 with a USB hard drive plugged into it. It works perfectly as a shared storage drive from all my computers. But as a Media Server it is not working. I purchased a Sony SMP-N200 Steaming Media Server that found all the PCs in the house and can stream music and photos fine. It does not see the shared USB drive connected to the E3000. Sony's web site says it uses DLNA to find and stream music and photos. It says Windows 7 is one example of DLNA When I go to DLNA.org and check to see what routers are DLNA compliant, it says the Cisco E4200 and E4200v2 is. Is Cisco going to make a firmeware upgrade to include DLNA for the E3000?

Networking :: Best Way To Connect Windows Server 2003 And Ubuntu 10

Mar 14, 2011

If I have two servers, one running Windows Server 2003, and one running Ubuntu 10, what would be the best way to 'map' one's drive to another? Either way is fine. They are each in a different state, and each have an external IP. I just need to do some processing on the Ubuntu server, then write the file either to its own drive, and have the web server (Windows) read it, or, have it write to the Windows HDD, and have Windows read it.

Sharing Files From A Dual Boot Ubuntu / Fedora With Windows 7

Jan 26, 2011

My setup was as follows:

Computer 1 - Win7 ip address 192.168.1.2
Computer 2 - Ubuntu 10.10 ip address192.168.1.3

Had samba working Ok Decided to check out Fedora 14 so set it up as dual boot on Computer 2 and installed samba.

Computer 1 - Win7 ip address 192.168.1.2
Computer 2 - Dual boot Ubuntu 10.10/Fedora 14 ip address 192.168.1.3

When Ubuntu is running, Win 7 sees shares for Ubuntu. If Fedora is running win 7 cannot connect to any shares stating a bad file path. From my understanding as both linux os'es are on the same computer, using the same connection, the ip address for both would be the same and thats probably were Win7 must have problems. From what I've read on the net it seems changing the netbios name or computer name would not work as Win7 would only use these to resolve the ip address which in this case would be the same.(Could be wrong). So essentially is there a way for Win7 to recognise which linux os was running on Computer 2 and display the shares accordingly.

Linksys Wireless Router :: WMP54Gv4 Won't Install On Windows 7 Or Ubuntu

Mar 10, 2012

I came into an old Win 7 computer (64-bit) with a WMP54G v4.0 wireless card in it. Apparently the driver had already been installed previously but when I booted the computer it didn't acknowledge the existence of the card or drivers. I installed the driver from here[url]... and restarted the computer when prompted (the card was already in the computer). Upon restart the setup was supposed to complete, but it never came up. When I re-ran the setup it just said the driver is already installed. The card still isn't being recognized, scanning for new hardware in the device manager doesn't bring it up. There is an entry for a "Network Controller" with no driver installed, it may be the WMP54G but trying to manually install the driver doesn't work. Windows just says it can't find the driver even when I point the install wizard right to its location.

Restricting Shared Folder Access Windows 7?

Mar 3, 2011

We have recently ordered a laptop along with a docking station with the intention of connecting it with the desktop PC in the office. We want the documents folders of both computers to be synchronized and to that end we want to share the folders between each computer. However, to do so we will have to connect the laptop to the larger network in our office. Given the sensitive nature of the documents we only want the desktop PC and the laptop to be able to access these files and synchronize them.

Is there anyway in Windows 7 to specify exactly which computers are allowed access to shared folders on a computer? What's the best way to achieve the file synchronization between the two?
