Homegroup / Network Running 32-bit Windows 7 Starter Not Working
Jan 3, 2011
I have three computers (all hp): a netbook running 32-bit Windows 7 starter, a laptop running 64-bit windows 7 premium and a desktop recently upgraded to 64-bit windows 7 premium. The desktop was previously running vista, and the network worked fine under vista. The computers can ping one another by IP address.

I have recently bought a Asus Eee PC with Windows 7 starter. It will connect ok to public Wifi (i.e. at the Qantas lounge) but will not connect to my home Wifi network - Netcomm N150 Router. The two other computer at home (running full versions of Windows 7) work fine over this network. When I look at the Station list in the Router's interface the MAC address for the new laptop appears but it has no IP address. [code] Have tried the obvious things like power cycling.

this is crazy - when i came back from out of town i tried to see if my problem still existed. it did - the win 7 laptop still could not "see" the win xp computers on the home network but all of the xp computers could see the win 7 laptop. just before sending this reply, i tried it "one more time". wa-lah, the laptop can see the other computers. this happened once before, it was seeing them, i had to leave the system and come back the next day - when i came back, the problem had returned. i did notice when i came back from out of town, my power had gone off and came back on- but this was b4 i checked it only to find the problem was still there, as just mentioned, i tried it just b4 writing this reply and the problem was no longer there. i just rebooted the laptop and as we speak, i can see all 3 of the xp computers from the win 7 laptop. i really can't make any sense out of what's going on but am beginning to think its in the modem.

I'm running a HP Mini 110 1191eo laptop with Windows 7 Starter. Every time I open up a browser, EI or Firefox, it says that it cannot display the webpage etc. The weird thing is however that the connection bar is showing full connection to the wireless internet! The connection should be up and running, but I can't get anything on any browser.I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for the network cards, both wireless and ethernet, but no luck. I don't what to do, as I'm no expert on these computer matters.Oh yeah, another weird thing: this laptop offers some kind of program before Windows loads, where you can perform basic stuff like connect to the internet, check your mail etc. Here I can connect via the wireless network! But not in Windows when I load it up.

I have a Windows XP Laptop and an Windows 7 Starter Netbook. I have recently changed internet provider, returned the previous (Netgear) router and configured a new (D Link) router. Prior to the change of internet provider, both laptops could connect wirelessly without issues. After installing the new router provided by new internet provider, my Windows XP laptop can connect to the internet wirelessly without problems, the signal is strong and the speeds decent. My Windows 7 Netbook can connect to the network and to the internet, however, the speed on it is so low that pages do not load at all. Whilst it remains connected (the connection does not drop), it does not display web pages. Occasionally it displays a page or two, and it seems the problem is fixed, but this lasts no longer than a few minutes, after which it starts displaying "white" pages again. When the connection to the router is wired, the problem disappears and I can access the internet and the pages load well, so the problems is strictly a Wi Fi connectivity issue.
The Windows 7 Starter Netbook that has this problem at home, connects to every single other network I have had the chance to test it on (at work, at internet cafes, at my parents, at my sisters) and it also used to work flawlessly with my home network before I changed internet provider. On all other networks, it works really well. The new (D Link) router seems to work, otherwise my Windows XP laptop would also be having problems... but it doesn't.So both the new (D Link) router and my Windows 7 Starter Netbook work well separately. They just don't work together!I have tried a number of things: restarting the Netbook, restarting the router, re-installing Windows 7 Starter completely, disabling the network adapter and re-enabling it, updating the network driver, unprotecting the network completely, disabling Windows Firewall, disabling antivirus, changing the channels on the router, placing quartz crystals next to both devices and chanting. Below, I am pasting IP Config files showing the details of the settings in both devices (the one that works and the one that doesn't). As far as settings on the router is concerned, I have checked that they are the basic default ones that technical support are recommending.

Dell Studio PCWindows 7 Home Premium SP1Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (Network Card)I have a mix of computers and operating systems (1 x Windows 7 and 2 x Windows XP). I can share files on the Windows XP computers from the WIndows 7 computer but I can only share files in the Public folder from my Windows XP computers. When I look at the network map it states that I do not have a network connection - but clearly I do as I can share some files. This may be due to my network profile being Public (current profile) and not Home or Work as I believe network maps cannot be shown if the network profile is Public. If you agree this may be the problem, how can I change to a Home profile. I cannnot find any setting for changing the profile from Public to Home. When I try to set Network Discovery to "On" in the Home and Work section of the Network and Sharing Center it does not 'stick' and reverts back to the "Turn off network discovery" setting (see attachment).

I have two laptops(Win7x64 Home Premium) and a desktop(Win7x64 Professional)set up to use Homegroup. I can access each computer from the other, however, the desktop folders that are set to Specific Person under shared can not be accessed by either laptop; public folder is ok. I am using Live ID on all three computers. I tried to add the folders to the libraies that I can access and I still can not access them. However, the odd thing, to me anyway, is if I use Explorer and type the Desktop address I can access the folders.

My main computer is a desktop PC, which is in my upstairs study. It is connnected wirelessly to the internet, and the Virgin router is downstairs in the living room. This has worked perfectly for 2 years. The computer uses Windows 7 ultimate. (COMPUTER 1), I recently purchased a laptop (COMPUTER 2) and installed Windows 7 ultimate. This uses the same wireless connection and at first I had no problem setting up a homegroup so that I could watch videos stored on Computer 1 on the laptop. The first problem is that the homegroup stopped working some time ago and when both computers are switched on, I get the message on both computers: "no other homegroup computers are currently available."
I figured I could leave the homegroup and start again but if I try to leave on either computer I get the error message: "Windows couldn't remove your computer from the homegroup." In services, both the Homegroup settings (listener and provider) are started, as are the peer networking options. I have tried disabling them and re-starting to no avail. Now, this hasn't been a major problem because I have still been able to access files on Computer 1 via Computer 2 by clicking on network>Computer1>user. But here is where it gets complicated. I have now purchased another desktop PC (COMPUTER 3) which I intend to place in the living room and connect to my TV, so that I'm not constantly connecting wires from my laptop (computer 2) if I want to watch something on the big screen. Again, Windows 7 ultimate installed.

I have a desktop and laptop running Win 7 and a WRT54G router. The desktop has a cable connecting to the router, and the laptop is wireless. Both connect to the network and internet fine, but I can't get the Windows 7 homegroup thing to work. Ran thru the troubleshooter a few times and got nothing out of it.
I just got the laptop so I could do programming homework and I'd like to be able to keep things synced with subversion wirelessly. Worst comes to worst I can use a USB key but it seems silly to do that when both computers talk to the same router.

It works then it stops seeing the homegroup machines. After struggling with this I have determined some things.
When it stops seeing any homegroup machines, xp, vista 64 and two dlink 323 nas boxes, I can get it working again by restoring the drive with a backup for a time when it did work.
I ran a lan software that showed me mac address, ip address, master brower and workgroup of every machine on the network. I ran the software when the Windows 7 home premium machine didn't see the workgroup. The software showed the windows home premium 64bit machine was not reporting the homegroup name. Looks to me like something is changing causing the win 7 home not to report the workgroup name. I tried changing the workgroup name, rebooting, changing it back then rebooting and it didnt' fix it.
When the machine is not seeing the workgroup I can ping the other machines but I can't map them using their IP addresses. When it lost the workgroup lately I noticed the first sign this time was I could see the machines and directories but could not access them being told I didn't have permissions/access basically. Can't remember the exact wording.
I am at a loss of what to do to fix this and I would perfer a fix verses reinstalling everything from scratch which may or may not perminately fix the problem.

I've come across an older IBM ThinkPad 2687 via work that was just collecting dust, and it was able to connect to a wireless network.Due to other issues with the machine, I had to do a complete refresh on it, so it only had the XP OS.
I had to update the drivers to make sure other things like connecting to a flash drive, and connecting to a local area was possible, which is how I'm able to connect now. However, I've been unable to access the wireless connection within Network connections. I've downloaded the different drivers from the Lenovo IBM ThinkPad website, but still no luck.

I have "Xtreme" internet service with Time Warner Cable, and it isn't so Xtreme. The modem/wireles router is the Ubee DDW3611.I was doing some work earlier this morning, and the lawn mower guy was here in the back doing his thing. All of a sudden the internet goes out. I see that damn dreaded yellow exclamation mark in the taskbar superimposed over the wireless internet icon. My first thought was that the lawn dude ran over some wires.I went outside to see if any wires were exposed or had been damaged. I noticed about a yard of wire was exposed above ground, but did not appear to have any damage.Anyway, I've been trying for the past few hours to fix this darn thing (before the technician gets here around 4pm). I've tried all the simple stuff like reset the modem, restart, mess with dns settings, but I have no idea where to go after this.
Here is what I get when I go to cmd > ipconfig /all:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

C:Windowssystem32>ipconfig /all

But I don't know how to fix it. No networks are found at all and internet only works when it's wired. I've worked on it and read on it for almost 2 days and I'm stuck. I'm using a Win 7 Pro desktop that is hardwired and a Win 7 Home Premium laptop wireless. Both current on all updates.
My Comcast modem is hooked into a WRT160N that is hardwired to the desktop PC and to a WRT400N which is being used as an access point. Both routers have the latest firmware. Both routers have the same SSID, security and password but use different channels. (2 & 6) Internet works perfect both wired and wireless through both routers.
The homegroup has been set up through the desktop but I've removed and added homegroups on both machines multiple times. My problem doesn't go away. The homegroup works when the laptop is either wired or wireless using the WRT160N. It will not work at all through the WRT400N. I can be in the room with the WRT160N hooked to the homegroup, when I move to the other router so the wireless switches to the WRT400N, it drops the homegroup. The internet stays connected just fine as I move back in forth so the IDs and security has to be correct. Once the laptop drops the homegroup, it can't find it until I go back and connect to the main router.
Both machines have IPv6 addresses, auto discovery is on.
I also have an XP machine hooked to the main router. The desktop can see it but it also is invisible to anything using the WRT400N router. I also made sure all PCs are using the same Network ID with no password.
It seems to me that neither Homegroup or Home Network are passing between the two routers since everything works fine using just one router.

I am having problems with any type of Network Card or Network USB adapter working with my PC running Windows 7. I had a LinkSys WMP54G PCI card working on this computer about a year ago as I was needing to use a wireless connection but then I didn't use it for 6 months. When I went to use it again, it wouldn't pick up connections at all.Thinking it was an issue with the card, I picked up a Edimax 7612UAn USB adapter thinking it should work out of the box. When I plug the USB adapter in, the standard Windows driver installation tries to run but an error message occurs stating "Device driver software was not successfully installed" accompanied by "Realtek RTL8191SU Wireless LAN 802.11n USB Failed". If I try to install the drivers manually, nothing changes and in Device Manager the following error message is displayed under Device Status "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)".

My laptop won't connect to the internet at all and status shows limited access to router. It was fine a few days ago until a Windows update. I did a system restore on it back to before the windows update and the internet was working just fine but then there was an automatic windows update again and the connection is gone again. When I try to troubleshoot it says the network adapter is not working properly. I'm currently using the main computer in the house. I can't access any network at all on my laptop and I'm nearly in tears. This has happened before about 7 months ago after a windows update. At that time I did a system restore and reinstalled the updates and it worked just fine. This time nothing. I have tried to check for updated drivers for the network adapters but windows says I'm running the recent ones.

When they left earlier today i switched on my pc and there was a virus alert so i ran a scan. These got put into the chest. I then attemtpted to close down the programmes that had come back up when i switched on and this is when it happened. The pc told me it was going to shut down and when it restarted i had not internet connection. I checked the modem and the ethernet light is out.

We're trying to get a new ASA 5505 put in place on our network after the untimely demise of our 1841 router. One of the functions of the router that we need to get back up and running is a pair of VPNs to employees that we have working from offsite. These are site-to-site VPNs.
They worked with the 1841 in place, so I know that the other end works. I'm just having trouble configuring the ASA to match. I've been through the wizard in ASDM a couple of times, but have yet to have any luck getting it to connect.
Attached are config files for the 1841 (with both VPNs) and the 5505 (with only 1 VPN in place). What I may be missing in order to get this working?
One note - I am having some trouble with my NAT configurations (another post pending), but I think they are close enough that I hope it's not interfering with the VPNs.
If I can get one running, the other has a nearly identical set up, so I should be able to get the second pretty easily.
