View 1 RepliesI have an existing home network with several win7 and XP machines connected.I would like to connect a new iPad wireless to th same work group. The iPad connects fine to the network and can access the internet. However, the iPad doesn't seem to see the other computers in the work group I want to connect it to, nor do the windows computers see the iPad. This is surely due (at least in part) to not having specified the work group name on the iPad, which I cannot figure out how to do.

View 10 Replies View RelatedDell Studio PCWindows 7 Home Premium SP1Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (Network Card)I have a mix of computers and operating systems (1 x Windows 7 and 2 x Windows XP). I can share files on the Windows XP computers from the WIndows 7 computer but I can only share files in the Public folder from my Windows XP computers. When I look at the network map it states that I do not have a network connection - but clearly I do as I can share some files. This may be due to my network profile being Public (current profile) and not Home or Work as I believe network maps cannot be shown if the network profile is Public. If you agree this may be the problem, how can I change to a Home profile. I cannnot find any setting for changing the profile from Public to Home. When I try to set Network Discovery to "On" in the Home and Work section of the Network and Sharing Center it does not 'stick' and reverts back to the "Turn off network discovery" setting (see attachment).

View 2 Replies View RelatedIve just installed Windows 7 on my PC and created a homegroup with the wizard but my laptop isnt detecting the homegroup so i cant "join" it.
My pc is wired to the router and my laptop is wireless.
I have two laptops(Win7x64 Home Premium) and a desktop(Win7x64 Professional)set up to use Homegroup. I can access each computer from the other, however, the desktop folders that are set to Specific Person under shared can not be accessed by either laptop; public folder is ok. I am using Live ID on all three computers. I tried to add the folders to the libraies that I can access and I still can not access them. However, the odd thing, to me anyway, is if I use Explorer and type the Desktop address I can access the folders.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy main computer is a desktop PC, which is in my upstairs study. It is connnected wirelessly to the internet, and the Virgin router is downstairs in the living room. This has worked perfectly for 2 years. The computer uses Windows 7 ultimate. (COMPUTER 1), I recently purchased a laptop (COMPUTER 2) and installed Windows 7 ultimate. This uses the same wireless connection and at first I had no problem setting up a homegroup so that I could watch videos stored on Computer 1 on the laptop. The first problem is that the homegroup stopped working some time ago and when both computers are switched on, I get the message on both computers: "no other homegroup computers are currently available."
I figured I could leave the homegroup and start again but if I try to leave on either computer I get the error message: "Windows couldn't remove your computer from the homegroup." In services, both the Homegroup settings (listener and provider) are started, as are the peer networking options. I have tried disabling them and re-starting to no avail. Now, this hasn't been a major problem because I have still been able to access files on Computer 1 via Computer 2 by clicking on network>Computer1>user. But here is where it gets complicated. I have now purchased another desktop PC (COMPUTER 3) which I intend to place in the living room and connect to my TV, so that I'm not constantly connecting wires from my laptop (computer 2) if I want to watch something on the big screen. Again, Windows 7 ultimate installed.
I have a desktop and laptop running Win 7 and a WRT54G router. The desktop has a cable connecting to the router, and the laptop is wireless. Both connect to the network and internet fine, but I can't get the Windows 7 homegroup thing to work. Ran thru the troubleshooter a few times and got nothing out of it.
I just got the laptop so I could do programming homework and I'd like to be able to keep things synced with subversion wirelessly. Worst comes to worst I can use a USB key but it seems silly to do that when both computers talk to the same router.
I have three computers (all hp): a netbook running 32-bit Windows 7 starter, a laptop running 64-bit windows 7 premium and a desktop recently upgraded to 64-bit windows 7 premium. The desktop was previously running vista, and the network worked fine under vista. The computers can ping one another by IP address.
[code]...
It works then it stops seeing the homegroup machines. After struggling with this I have determined some things.
When it stops seeing any homegroup machines, xp, vista 64 and two dlink 323 nas boxes, I can get it working again by restoring the drive with a backup for a time when it did work.
I ran a lan software that showed me mac address, ip address, master brower and workgroup of every machine on the network. I ran the software when the Windows 7 home premium machine didn't see the workgroup. The software showed the windows home premium 64bit machine was not reporting the homegroup name. Looks to me like something is changing causing the win 7 home not to report the workgroup name. I tried changing the workgroup name, rebooting, changing it back then rebooting and it didnt' fix it.
When the machine is not seeing the workgroup I can ping the other machines but I can't map them using their IP addresses. When it lost the workgroup lately I noticed the first sign this time was I could see the machines and directories but could not access them being told I didn't have permissions/access basically. Can't remember the exact wording.
I am at a loss of what to do to fix this and I would perfer a fix verses reinstalling everything from scratch which may or may not perminately fix the problem.
Im looking to create a home network with a wireless router.I have three machines, one computer is downstairs connected to the router with an ethernet cable, my other two machines are upstairs and connet to the internet wirelessly through the same router downstairs.I want to be able to connect to my upstairs computer with my laptop and access my files, i have an external hard drive connect to my computer and want to be able to back up to it from my laptop without removing cables. All three machines are running windows 7, the homegroup doesn't seem to work?

I thought that you just turned on the IPad2 and it would automatically connect to my Dell Studio 5010 DW1501 WiFi Half Card to my new IPad2. No way, I have spent the best of 5 days trying everything including re-installing Windows 7 Pro including the latest DW1501 drivers, but to no avail. I just can not connect. I hear that there is a patch to make Windows 7 compatable with IPad?

I can use the router with my laptop so I know the connection and password are ok.I've seen two administrators on here suggest the same thing. And one person responded that it worked. The identical directions were:
Try changing some advanced wireless settings on the router.Connect the computer to the router with the Ethernet cable. Open the setup page of the router.Click on wireless tab and set the configuration view to manual. Change the wireless channel to 11. Save the settings.Go to wireless tab and click on Advanced wireless settings.Change Beacon interval to 75, RTS threshold to 2307 and fragmentation threshold to 2306. Save the settings.Try to connect to the wireless network again and see if that works.
1 - I think my computer already is connected to the router with the Ethernet cable - I mean there is an Ethernet cable attached to both my computer and my router - in slot 1 on the router
2 - the only thing I know how to access is the Linksys EasyLink Advisor. What and where is the setup page of the router?
What should i do ? Reset ? How ? maybee i did not set the cable properly ( what is an ethernet cable ? ) the one i have is a short cable with what looks like telephone jacks at either ends. one end is plugged in my comcast modem and the other into my mini mac.
