Linksys Wireless Router :: E2500 Local Host Name Resolution?
Aug 7, 2011
I just purchased an E2500. I have a small home network dominated by Mac and Linux boxes, with an occassional Windows machine. On my previous router I had been running OpenWRT.
One of the nice features of DNSMASQ is that it will do local name resolution from the /etc/hosts file on the router. Is there anyway to turn on similar features in the E2500? I have a NAS box and a networked printer that require local name resolution. I had hoped that I could just create a DHCP reservation for them, and that the router would resolve their names for other hosts on the network. This does not appear to work.
Should I just be boxing this thing up and returning it in favor of a unit I can flash better firmware on to?

I have a E2500 connected to a cable modem as the base of my home network. Hard wire connected to the E2500 is an linksys 8 port hub and a couple of computers. The 8 port hub is connected to a couple of computers and a xbox. I have the hub as a distro point to cut down on wiring. Wirelessly connected to the E2500 are a variety of laptops, netbooks, ipods, an ipad, a playbook, an iphone, a android phone, a wireless printer and a Ps3. Most of the devices are just using the wifi for internet access. Most devices have been setup with their own ip addresses to avoid ip conflicts. The computers and laptops/netbooks are running either Windows XP, Windows 7 or Mepis Linux. Up until now everything was going as good as can be expected, all the computers could see each other and most could transfer files between each other except when Windows gets picky. In the last few days no computers can see each other. Windows or Linux.Everything can accsess the internet and wirelessly print still just can't see each other. I reset the E2500. I updated the firmware on the E2500. I installed the Cisco Connect software (just in case I was too stupid too setup a router). Still nothing. I can ping other machines from a command prompt in windows or a terminal in Linux and get a good ping back. In the router setup via a browser I can go to the status page and see other devices on the local network but most are just ipods, ipad, playbook and the wireless printer, If I go to the administration page / diagnostics I can ping other computers and get a good answer. I just can see them from each other. I think I've rebooted every thing at least once. Yes the workgroup names are all the same (workgroup) and yes file sharing is turned on on all computers.

I am using an E2500 as an access point, which is working fine. I have an Ethernet cable on one of the LAN ports of the E2500 connected to a LAN port on my gateway router. The LAN address of the E2500 is 192.168.7.3 and the LAN address of the gateway router is 192.168.7.1. Clients on the E2500 wireless network have no problems getting to the Internet through the gateway router. Clients on the E2500 wireless network can reach the E2500 local management port at 192.168.7.3 on port 80. On the gateway router I am forwarding WAN port 8083 to LAN address 192.168.7.3 at port 80. But I cannot access the E2500 local management interface via the gateway router. The E2500 should see the request as from 192.168.3.1 due to NAT in the gateway router, right? I can reach any of my actual access points this way, just not a router being used as an access point. Security/design limitation of the router?

With my current setup on the 5508 controller, I don't have the ability to see any name resolution for wireless clients. I'm wondering if there is some way that I can enable this.
The reason I think this should be pretty easy is because if I enable the access point feature of a smart phone (Android or iPhone), when a client connects, it shows the client name on the smartphone. What's different about how a smartphone sees the wireless client and how WLC/WCS sees it?

I'm adding another router to my home network to extend my WiFi range. (Linksys e2500.) I'm trying to change its IP from the default 192.168.1.1 so that it doesn't conflict with my primary (dhcp) router.
To isolate matters I've reset the router to factory settings, turned off my mac's WiFi and then connected the Mac to a Lan port on the router. Now I can view the router's admin page at 192.168.1.1.
Now I change its local IP to 192.168.1.3 and leave the subnet as 255.255.255.0. The router reboots and after several minutes is inaccessible at any IP I try (still hardwired to the Mac with WiFi off). Ifconfig doesn't show the router and the only way I can get it back is to factory reset it again.

I'm running a Windows Server 2008 R2 connected via cable to my RV220. The server is hosting several websites running in separate virtual machines. These websites are accessible through a reverse proxy set up on the 2008 R2. In addition the 2008 R2 provides access to storage over Windows file sharing (client backup, file sharing ...). Most of the clients are connected via wireless. My problem is that after some time (~24h) I lose the connection to the services provided by the 2008 R2 server as a result of (host) name resolution has stopped working. This only happens for wireless clients. Wired clients are not affected. To give more details: Network clients connected via wireless can't see clients connected via Ethernet and the network shares are not accessible anymore (even by putting in manually "\hostnameshare", but "\[IP address]share" still works). Being connected via Ethernet the communication between client and server works flawlessly - the server appears immediately on the network device list. The other way around is also not possible: the server can’t see clients connected via wireless. The reverse proxy is still accessible through wireless connection by putting in the IP address, e.g. "http://192.168.1.123/homepage" but "http://hostname/homepage" won't work.A restart of the router will fix things but only for the next couple of hours.

I like the ASA 5505 for SMB and Home Offices very much, but I'm missing sadly a DNS Server or at least the ability of the DHCP Server to use static addresses for certain MAC's. In SOHO's the ASA is the only thing always powerded on and often even a Server where a DNS Server could be installed is missing. So is there a chance to see such a feature (DNS Server and/or static DHCP) in the next SW Release? how name resolution in a small LAN can be done without a local DNS Server?

I have an out of the box configured RV220W and was wondering if it supports local DNS resoltuion for DHCP addresses it issues. I have a few reservations and a custon search domain configured ('local') but it will not resolve a name fromt the terminal using the search domain (see below):
It resolves freenas but not freenas.local.
macbookair:~ brantwinter$ dig freenas
; <<>> DiG 9.8.1-P1 <<>> freenas
;; global options: +cmd

i'm trying to setup a local DNS server to manage small office local-only domain names for our servers. i have the DNS working properly (resolving local machines and using the ISP dns if it can't). so i put the DNS server ip into the "Static DNS 1" field of the router settings. the other 2 static dns fields are empty.the problem is that the router is still using the ISP dns server as the primary and my local dns server as the secondary. i verify this in two places. first, if i go to the "status" tab, DNS 1 shows the ISP server while DNS 2 shows my local DNS server. secondly, if i connect to the wireless device with a linux-based machine, the /etc/resolv.conf file shows the nameserver ips in the same incorrect order.

I'm currently setting the MAC address filtering for my Linksys E2500 router. I have about 20 devices which i'm allowing to access my router, so i keyed in the MAC addresses into the config page and save setting. But only 16 addresses are registered, the rest refused to register no matter how many times i key in, it just reset back to 00:00:00:00:00:00 after i click on save setting.

we are observing the no. of conn thru asa 5580 is getting increased and one a fine day it will stop sending/receiving traffics.firewall# show conn count 1900000 in use, 2000008 most used As per the datasheet of this asa, the max conns permissible is 2 million (20 lacs). and the output shows that currently 1900000 connections are there and 2million+8 connections are most used.when i run " show local-host | include host|count/limit ", below are the outputs showing for max connections..
local host: <172.x.x.x>,
TCP flow count/limit = 35857/unlimited
TCP embryonic count to host = 25
UDP flow count/limit = 0/unlimited
local host: <DC01>, TCP flow count/limit = 306/unlimited TCP embryonic count to host = 8 UDP flow count/limit = 736807/unlimited
local host: <DC02>, TCP flow count/limit = 246/unlimited TCP embryonic count to host = 2 UDP flow count/limit = 582010/unlimited
local host: <172.y.y.y>, TCP flow count/limit = 1/unlimited TCP embryonic count to host = 0 UDP flow count/limit = 308412/unlimited
These are the top 4 connections, i wonder should we consider only the tcp flow count or udp as well ?

I previously entered in settings for the "Static DNS" 1 through 3 (using ip addresses from OpenDNS and one from Google DNS).
I want to remove these so the router reverts to using the DNS allocated to it by the ADSL modem (which will likely be the IP of the modem, which then forwards the requests to the DNS from the ISP).But I can't clear the Static DNS settings. I have to put in 0.0.0.0 but the last zero is not accessed. I get the error: The value is out of range [1 - 254].So I end up with 0.0.0.1 and then all Internet access is lost on the computers because they are being given a bad DNS IP.
How can I reset the static DNS ip address back to 0.0.0.0 ?

In the past few days I have seen an odd named Client Host "The-Britannic" show up on my DHCP Active IP Table list. There is no device (that I'm aware of) with that name on my network. I delete it but it reappears, and is linked to the same IP (192.168.1.101) and MAC address everytime, so it appears to be a legitimate device. Although it looks like a legitimate device, it's not - so far as I know. I have added the MAC address to the blocked list (internet access / access restriction) to see if I or anyone in-house losese internet connectivity on any. So far, no. Searching various malware and spyware sites turn up nothing.
I realize the IP address is assigned by the router through the automatic DHCP assignement process. I do not broadcast my SSID and have a complex passcode assigned to both the wireless and internal network. Of course, that is no 100% guarentee that someone has not gotten in.I'm running a WRT54GL, all Windows 7 PC's on a home built network. I'll probably change all the passcodes (wireless and Windows Home Network) to see if that disallows access.

I want to add my E2500 as a second wireless router to cover my entire house.I have a Motorola Surfboard SBG6580 cable modem (Time-Warner) at one end of the house.I added via powerline Ethernet connection a new E2500 wireless router at the other end of the house. The E2500 set-up with all defaults and has the same SSID and Password as the Surfboard cable modem. It seems to work OK, but I wonder about network confusion/interference.Do I have to configure the E2500 in some manner to allow seamless roaming of my wireless devices (iPad, Cell Phones, Netbook)?I had an RE1000 with just the Surfboard, but it did not quite do the trick, and does not like both routers connected at either end.

DHCP is disabled on the E2500. I can use my E2500 as a wired access point with no difficulty I plug something in and it calls the router and gets an address, but I can not get DHCP through the wireless of the E2500.

I have Time Warner as my internet company. I recently purchased a new Linksys Router Mode E2500 because I have been having issues with my old router. My internet was disconnecting sporadically. After connecting the new router, a started getting the same issue. I replaced my internet cable modem to a Cisco 2100 modem (provided by Time Warner). I noticed that the issue keeps happening sporadically which makes me believe it is my Linksys router. Every time a new wireless connection is connected, my modem circuit dies. This happens sporadically.

I have bought and installed an E2500 router 4 days ago. Installation of router and network using Cisco Connect was easy and without problems. However, after 4 days of usage, not changing anything in the network nor running Cisco Connect or accessing the web interface, I tried to start Cisco Connect and got the message "Cannot access your router".Internet is running, router is accessible via 192.168.1.1 in a browser window, Cisco Connect also works fine on my laptop. The only solution I found on this forum is: reset your router and reinstall Cisco Connect.and then every 4 days resetting my router and reinstalling the software?

I am working with vpn setups for the first time. I would like to be able to connect to a computer on a home network through a linksys E2500 router. I have found alot of documentation on connecting to an external vpn from a computer on the lan side of the router, but nothing on connecting from the outside in. The router does have a static ip address with my internet provider, so I can contact the router from the outside. But makeing the connection to the computer on the other side of the router is where I am missing something or I dont realize that it is not possible. On the LAN side I am using DHCP to assign the address to the computer I want to connect to. Perhaps I need to make it have a static address also? I realize that when I configure the connection from the outside that I need to direct the connection to the remote computer in some way, unless vpn connections are fully passed through the router and the connection issue I am having is with the "inside" computer.

Since i configured i can access from wireless PCs to servers and PCs in the wired subnet but cannot access from wired computers from to wireless PCs. I suppouse it is because traffic is restricted from Wan to Lan.

I have a E2500 connected via LAN to my network via a switch or hub through a sonic wall and into the modem out to the internet. The problem is that I am only getting +/- 5Mpbs Down and +/-7 Mbps up through the router.
If I connect my computer to the network with out going through the router my speeds are more in the range of +/-28 Mbps down and 16Mbps up. I have been working with Linksys support but they have not been able to assist me with this yet! Is there any configuring I should be doing at the firewall or to the router to tell it to open up the port for faster speeds?

Cisco Linksys E3000
I have different types of network clients connecting to both bands of router (5 ghz and 2.4 ghz), and both bands set to WPA2 only. Everything has been set up and working for the past year with no problems.
Suddenly this morning, none of the 2.4 ghz clients can connect and get authenticated. When I attempt to ping them from a Windows 7 desktop connected by a LAN cable, I get Destination Host Unreachable.
The 5 ghz clients are fine and have had no problems. I tested this with the New iPad connected to the 5 ghz band.
Rebooted the E3000 router and the Comcast cable modem, then installed the newest firmware on the E3000 using the web access portal at 192.168.1.1, and still not working.
Changed the WPA2 Personal security mode for the 2.4 ghz band to WPA2 Personal/WPA Mixed Mode, and now all the clients are connected and authenticated and working OK, albeit slower.
What happened? And how can I fix this so I can change the security mode for the 2.4 ghz band back to WPA2 Personal?
P.S. The types of clients that connect to the 2.4 ghz band are 2 Windows 7 desktops, a Windows 7 laptop, and 5 Cisco Wireless N Internet Home Monitoring Cameras. The camera feeds have slowed down considerably using this Mixed mode.
