Motorola SBG901 Wireless Connection Is Very Slow
Aug 12, 2012
I have Bright House as my ISP and did not want to pay a monthly rent (and an additional $45 for installation) so I decided to buy the SBG901.
Long story short I discovered that the variable and slow wireless speed is because of the wireless feature and not Bright House.
Have tried to modify several settings (as the ones found on Amazon's reviews) but still get 4-5 MB instead of the 7MB that I get with a wired connection and sometimes I do not get any wireless internet at all !
I am about to purchase a modem and a separate router if I can't find a solution for this. Unit is out of warranty so Motorola won't assist either.

I have a Motorola SBG901 router/gateway that is hooked to my desktop. I recently purchased a Netgear WNR2000 to use as a router to connect to a Blue-Ray player to receive firmware updates wirelessly. On every attempt to access the netgear unit to set it up as a repeater, I get nowhere. I tried hooking the unit up to my laptop and login in under the admin account but again to no avail. I really don't want to have to disconnect the SBG901.

I've been trying to connect my D-Link DIR-601 router with a Motorola SBG901 cable modem. The modem itself has a built-in WIFI (G) and one ethernet port, but not good enough for my purposes. I need more wired connections and an (N) WIFI connection, which the D-Link could provide, if I could get it to work. I just cannot get the two pieces of equipment to talk to each other. I can set up 2 independent LAN's, but no WAN (internet connection) from either. D-Link has provided pages of instrutions, but nothing works.

I have a Motorola SBG901 router. Typing ipconfig showed that 172.18.8.1 is the Default Gateway and this is the URL I always used to access the router login page.
I reset the router today by holding the reset button. Now typing the URL 172.18.8.1 does not work. The router user guide says to go to 192.168.0.1. I have tried this but it also does not work. For both I just get the "problem loading page" in Firefox.
The Internet works fine both with an ethernet connection and wirelessly. My only issue is that I cannot access the Motorola router login page. I could access it fine this morning before I reset the router.

The speeds for my internet connection seems to vary significantly. For most of the day I have checked the speed of my internet from various websites such as speedtest.net, speed.io, speakeasy, 2wire, etc. The upload speeds are fine and are close to the advertised 4 Mbps upload speed that I am paying for.During the early afternoon, the download speeds are around 15 Mbps and start to slowly decline until it reaches 1 Mbps at around 9 PM. This has been going on for months and I pay for 30 Mbps download speed from Charter. I've checked this on three different computers throughout the day and they all read the same thing. I don't know if it's a problem with my router or a problem with the wiring in the house. the modem/router I have right now is a Motorola SBG941. url...

ISP provides us with 20 mb/s download speed. Both Toshiba laptops used to be able to attain this but after reinstalling windows xp on this laptop, it can only achieve 8mb/s. The other laptop will get 20 mb/s whether connected wired or wireless. For the life of me cannot figure what has changed. I have installed all windows updates including SP3 and updated all drivers via Toshiba and Intel websites. It uses the Intel 3945b/g network card and the router is a motorola sbg 6580.

So I've had this problem before and normally I solve it by simply unplugging everything from my modem and router but ive tried that this time several times to no avail. The internet suddenly cut out one day and when I did my usual unplugging thing it came back unbearably slow.Right now I'm running off a motorola SB5100 Surboard modem and a linksys WRT54G2 router and its not my computer, everyone in the house is getting terrible speed.

I have Comcast cable and prior to a couple days ago, it has always been smooth @ 36mbps download and 5mbps upload. I have a Netgear WNDR3700 and Motorola 6121 connected to my PC via Ethernet cable. Up until a couple days ago, I've been getting lag spikes where my games would completely freeze for a good 2-3 seconds and resume, as if the entire connection dropped and reconnected. I did a speedtest and I was getting around 4mbps download and 1-2mbps upload with huge fluctuation in speed.
I called Comcast and they said they were seeing a "red" signal error from their end so they sent out a tech to my house. He came over, changed some cables outside because they were corroded and that's about all he did. I tested my connection while he was still there and I was again getting 36mbps download and 5mbps upload. It was a quick 1-2 test so everything seemed normal until I started to see lag in games again.
I am getting the same lag spikes, albeit it's not as bad as before but it's still pretty annoying. Using speedtests, I am still getting 36mbps download but the graphs show that there are inconsistencies where there would be sudden drops in speed and picks back up still to show 36mbps. These drops are what I assume are the lag spikes. The upload is also suffering now, dropping down to 2-3mbps and it takes the test about 20-30seconds to load the upload portion of the test. Even loading web pages, sometimes it locks up for a few seconds longer than it should, which is normally instantaneous.
I have tried connecting my PC directly to the modem to bypass the router and am still getting the same lag, probably a little LESS but still the lag is there. My router is has always been updated to the latest firmware.

I have a Motorola surfboard sb5101. Provider is comcast.I have never had any problem with my equipment until now. Here is whats going on. I bought a used sb5101 a week ago so that I would not have to pay the rental fee anymore. Comcast activated it, and it worked fine for a week or two. The other night I got disconnected from XBOX live randomly in the middle of a game. Thought maybe just a hickup, no biggie. Well it happened 3 more times in a few hours, then again the next day.So thinking maybe this used modem is bad, I plugged back in the rental from comcast which I still had. Worked fine for a while, then the same thing, random dissconnects after 10 min, 30 min, 2 hrs into a game...etcOn both modems, the 1st and 4th green light are solid, the 2nd and 3rd green light are flashing when the connection from LIVE drops. So I'm starting to think know that neither of the modems are bad. I then try going directly to the modem instead of the router, never had any problems with the router but figured I try.I even went into the attic and got rid of the 4 way splitter that feeds cable into all the bedrooms and put in a 2 way instead hooking up only the cable line im using for xbox. Thought maybe the signal is getting degraded to bad, eventhough never had a problem before. So now I'm practically hooked up right to the line coming off the street, ethernet cord plugged directly into the modem, no router. Still dropping connections randomly with same 2nd and 3rd light flashing. The connection needs to be completely stable for multiple hours. Also, I called comcast when I had to reactivate the rental modem, so they did refreshed that modem and reactivate it, but still had the disconnects the next day.

Trying to figure out if I have a bad modem or bad wiring leading to the modem.I'm losing connectivity usually in the evening when I'm sure everything is more loaded.he reason I'm concerned about the modem is that when I lose connectivity, I can't access the modem through my browser. It won't respond. This isn't just for a moment. I'll unplug the modem and plug it back in. I can access the modem after that with my browser, but more often than not, I don't regain connectivity. It keeps trying and failiing.its a Motorola SB5100 from 10 years ago. how to seperate bad wiring from a bad modem?

Motorola Surfboard 6121, Every since Com-cast has updated their network (two months ago), my Internet connection is VERY unstable.Com-cast says it is my problem because I can get reliable service at high speed using just my laptop: Win 7, and the Motorola modem. The modem does show high speed connection (blue light) when the only thing connected is the laptop. If I connect the rest of the home network; ,LinkSys BEFSR11 router, Netgear FS #108 10/100 switch, then my laptop. The Surfboard modems light turns orange (lower connection speeds). do I need to replace my NetGear switch and my router? This constant up and down intermittent connection is terrible!

I have a Motorola modem SURFBoard SB4200, along with a wireless Linksys router that connects to that modem. The router works normally but the modem often dies and restarts itself after about 1-2 minutes.
What could be causing this problem? How should I start debugging it?
Could an excessive amount of network traffic be bringing down the modem? Are there any tools that can monitor the modem?

I am using a Samsung N210 with 2GB of memory in it and Windows 7 Starter. When I use the wireless connection the "Connection Status" shows as 72Mbps, which is to be expected considering I am only a few feet from the router.the speed is nothing like that in reality. I tested the actual transfer speeds for the wired and wireless connections by copying a 238MB folder with 77 photos in it. I copied it from the NAS device, where I store all my files, to the local disk of the netbook.

I recently moved back home with my desktop that use to be plugged in via ethernet. I bought a PCI Wireless card and I have been having problems connecting to and staying connected with the network. Once I am connected the connection speed is very slow. I have tried reinstalling windows and my card several times, even going to the store to swap it out. I have a feeling that one simple setting is changed, but I can't figure out what it is. I am currently on a laptop that is also running windows 7, but has none of the problems of the desktop. I tried to run the Netalyzer program on the desktop, however, the network disconnected as soon as I tried. Here is the link to the results from my laptop that is connected to the network: ICSI Netalyzr — Results

i have a 4Mbps DSL internet connection with 3 PCs connected through a router. 2 are connected wirelessly and the other is wired via an ethernet cable.i noticed that when downloading a file from an international server, the transfer rate on the wireless PCs is 2-3 times slower than on the wired PC. the wireless PC would get about 150-200kb/s, whereas the wired PC can max out to 450kb/s on a single download.however when i download from a local or nearby server instead, the transfer rate on the wireless and wired PCs are the same and can both reach up to 450kb/s per download.i don't understand why the wireless connection is slower to international servers compared to the wired PC. don't they all go through the same router? or am i missing something?my wireless signal is at 54Mbps with "excellent" strength. i also tested the ping results from both the wireless and wired PCs to international servers and they are pretty much the same. there doesn't seem to be any extra latency all PCs are running windows XP SP3- the modem/router is a D-Link 2640B

I just had comcast internet installed, and am using a linksys wireless router (WRT160N). When I connect my netbook to the network it gets 0.7mbps on speedtest.net, when I use my girlfriends laptop it gets 16+mbps. I have tried everything, I am at my whits end. I have updated my firmware, updated windows to the the limit and reset the settings on my router. If I connect my netbook directly to the router I get 20+ but wireless is 0.7 and upload speed stays the same. I am using an HP Mini 210-2000 with windows 7 starter, I have updated it to service pack 1 and have all the windows based drivers installed. I have not tested it on another wireless network to see if it gets the same terrible connection. I don't know if its something with my computer, windows 7 starter, or the way my computer talks to the router

So, first of all, I have two PCs in my home, one connected directly to the router, the other connected through the wireless network. I use the wireless connected PC. In the past I've had some issues of my connection cutting out on random occasions for about a minute then reconnecting back. This happened to every single user connected to the network, including the one connected directly to the router. It was just a minor nuisance so I just put up with it. However, one day my internet just slowed down to a crawl and I don't think any hardware/software changes were made to cause this, but I may be wrong. What confuses me is that, now the internet has slowed down, the disconnecting issue is a very rare occurrence. It happens probably once a day, where as before it was much more frequent. I assume it has something to do with my network not being so strained. The PC connected directly to the router does not seem to have this issue, in the speed test below, it has a higher download rate, around 6-7mbps I think (it's pretty bad in this area, but it's usable).I have done some research as to why this is happening, but there are so many different diagnoses for a slow internet that finding the one I'm having is really difficult. I thought it was just my ISP performing maintenance but it's lasted for about 4-5 days now.

I recently moved to a new apartment to be closer to work and this apartment complex is only covered by what I was told is a wireless hotspot.Basically, a wireless devices connects to the SSID, logs in, and then you're set with the most pitiful internet still available. Now I was told I could pay $70 bucks to have these people (Onlyinternet.net by the way) install a device that would allow me to connect my desktop to the internet service. Wasn't thrilled about that. Its $40 a month, for a 1Mb connection so that wasn't going to happen anyway.Looked up internet connection sharing and had setup my laptop to use it with my desktop. My connection on my laptop has always had a very low signal; between one and two bars no matter where I'm at in my apartment. If I go outside it'll get about 4 bars but that is about it. The actual speeds listed on the Wireless Network Connection Status go from 1Mbps, 2Mpbs, 5.5Mpbs and 11Mbps. Never higher.Today I went and picked up a NETGEAR N300 wireless router. My hope was that the router might be able to pick up the wireless connection and I could just connect through my router instead of having to use my laptop. Apparently, this is not the case.I have to use my laptop act as a modem and have it plugged into the Internet port of the router and then my desktop connected to one of the LAN ports on the router. Is this setup better then using the internet connection sharing deal? Is there any other way of increasing my signal strength and network speeds?

I've just had a custom computer built and I seem to have a problem with my wireless internet connection. I have a Realtek 8185 extensible 802.11b/g wireless adapter. My computer recognizes my house's network and is connected to the internet with a good connection, but when I open up my web browser it takes a very long time for the page to load and sometimes never does. The laptop I'm on right now is connected to the same internet and it is running just fine. I've uninstalled the device and rebooted to have the driver reinstalled but the problem still occurs.

Having some issues with my wireless connection which only seem to occur after 12-1AM, my signal according to windows 7 seems be lowered which results in anywhere from 2-10 seconds stall in service, sometimes even disconnecting me all together.
I get no issues during the day of any sort where i have 4+ other devices constantly using the router but I'm the only person in the house that uses the internet this late in the night so I'm completely stumped on what the problem could be.
Using the Dir-655 router with B1revision with 2.0 firmware, connected with an older wireless G adapter.

I originally installed my DIR-655 as a wireless access point, not using the wired ports at all, and it worked fine like this. Trouble with my trying to set up my Bell router/modem with port forwarding prompted me to change my configuration so my Bell router /modem is now only a modem, and I am using the DIR-655 as a wired as well as wireless router. I have a separate network server and so don't use the DHCP on the DIR-655, and I only use one port to connect to a separate gigabit switch that serves the network.
I am finding that the wireless connection works really well with the few wireless devices I have connected (mainly an apple tv, and a MAC book) but my wired connections to the internet "feel" slow, sometimes with a significant delay before links to sites are established. I click a link, and wait for several seconds before the site shows up in the browser; sometimes after that the same site seems to respond at normal speeds, other times there are added delays.
Is there something in the DIR-655 settings that would cause this? The wireless connections seem fine.
Should I be looking at a new router/modem (rather than separate boxes)? If so what would be the equivalent D-Link model?

I've been having this issue since I set up my service and am stumped. Although the ethernet connection runs at close-to-top speed (768k/sec), my wireless connection is incredibly slow on all my devices (Two PCs, HTC Titan, Asus Eepad). Browsing is an exercise in frustration and downloads top out around 95k if I'm lucky. I'm using an Actiontec GT784WN (my own modem/router) with Verizon DSL. I've also tried using two USB adapters, a Belkin and a T-Link with the same results.
when I test at Speedtest.com, my speeds appear to be at full, 768k down/24k up and my ping is always under 60ms.
