I have been in this field for a few years and I found this book, Network Performance Toolkit: Using Open Source Testing Tools, to be very useful. It is full of great open source testing tools and has easy to use instructions for them all.However, to be more specific, I am looking for a packet generator that can simulate network packets over an extended amount of time. So the end result is I have this generator test my physical network for an hour but it simulates a week of real network traffic. Any tool, ideally it be open source?
I would like a free tool that would moniter the internet usage of our network. it has about 20 computers and would like the following features: be able to show the usage of each computer the type of usage, ie, browsing, downloading, streaming a total usage Is there such a free program? would Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4 be able to do the trick if i learnt how to use it?

I have a medium enviroment with 2 x Cat4500 switches and 50 x Cat3650 plus few Cat3750 switches. I'm running Windows 7 Pro. I noticed tonight when I clicked on Network in Windows Explorer that in addition to my home PCs there is a PC with someone's name on it. My suspicion is that my wireless ISP has screwed up in some way. I ran SoftPerfect's Network Scanner and don't see any strange IP addresses, so this stranger's PC is not on my subnet. What tools are available to scan my network and give me more info about the stranger's PC?
To test the VPN performance of ASA 5540, I will have to build at least 1000 VPN tunnels. It is time-consuming works if I put all of commands line by line manually. It looked like a bundle of VPN tunnels won't be created by ASDM. I am wonder if there is any generator tool for this. I just tried to google it. I found a software is named as VPN Configure Generator, but it is not free.
I have developing a utility which lets a user do the following :-
1)Identify the internet gateway device / router using uPnP
2)Check for the portmappings present in the gateway
3)Add / remove a port mapping from the gateway device
4)some other functions like loopback interface testing etc
Now , I need a router simulator (or any other way )which supports the following to test my work uPnP+ NAT +can be configured using SOAP XML messages although this is not a requisite as I am using Microsoft's SDK for uPnP ?Host 3 (or may be 4 is the RAM allows) virtual machines , connect them into a subnetwork using this software and then testing for the above requirements .

I am connecting to a Wireless network, through a ZyXel ZyAIR G-4100v2 router. My problem is that I am experiencing very regular packet loss every minute or so. This lasts for around 5-10 seconds on average. I am running XP with the latest service pack. So far, I have checked out;Wireless Zero Config scanning of new stations (disabled that feature).Xirrus network scan (signal is fine and consistent). I am not suffering from any degredation in signal, the problem seems to be that the router is simply not allowing anything through at regular intervals.

I was using my computer, and it was fine. Then my Mom used it, and when I got it back, the Internet didn't work. The network connections page looked completely different. It looked like it converted to ancient networking software. There's this American Family Insurance (my mother used to work there) connection that I didn't even know was there. They want me to use dialup for a broadband connection. All the stuff is just dial up and so old I don't remember seeing that stuff anytime recently. How do I change my network connections page so it can use wifi (what this comp has)?
I have just installed Cisco Prime LMS 4.1 from .ova file on a VMware architecture. My customer wants to know if the server is compatible with vmware tools.
I am unable to get traffic from any VLAN to communicate outside of the router, as well as get any traffic from outside of the router to communicate with any device on either VLAN. I am able to ping the router from each device on each VLAN, and vice versa. However, the traffic seems to die at the router, and I cannot figure out why. I know it's probably a small, easy fix, but I cannot seem to find any kind of documentation on it.
Today i has tryed to update the firmware of my DIR-655 router, but in the screen under the administrative tools menu there is nothing to use.
how do I update the firmware and bring up all the necessary tools?Dir-655 works because they are connected to the internet and manages the wireless network.
I have recently been testing out the Kaillera netplay application thats embedded into a few old console emulators. Now the major problem is the de-sync between clients and I was wondering which is the best to reduce this.Say I have an upload speed of 1.2 Mbps and a download speed of 11.28 Mbps. Obviously, I am capped by my upload speed when it comes to changing how many packets i can send/receive per second because its all one setting and I am usually playing P2P.So, I am not entirely sure how big the packets are that are being sent, I am guesstimating based on what they said on Kaillera website that it is around 200-300 bits.Anyway, with my current upload speed I can transfer at a rate of like 600-800 packets per second depending on packet length.De-sync's happen quite often especially in the higher rom size games like Mario Party because of all the data being transferred. Would it be wiser to increase my setting of pps from 20 packets/sec to 60 packets/sec?
My company is moving the datacenter to our new building on Saturday, however the users will remain at the old building until late next month so they bought a 100M Metro E VPLS circuit through their ISP. I went to test it today but could not ping the workstation from my laptop. I wanted to do some bandwidth testing with iperf but could never get to that point because ICMP connectivity wasn't even there. From what I understand, VPLS is just a layer 2 extension so they way I'm testing the circuit below SHOULD work, but it isn't. Spoke with the ISP and they tested the circuit end-to-end on their equipment which was fine so am I missing something?
how can i check my wirless lan card, i have a wireless internet connection at home but now a days i am getting low speed on laptop and signals on the wireless device are full but on my laptop i am getting less signals.
My Dell laptop on my home network was connecting fine until I tried to figure out why it was booting and running so slowly and tinkered with the settings (per a web site with recommendations). Now it says no connections are available (there are, and other devices are fine). I tried all the simple solutions and have made any programs automatic that even vaguely look internet related and I still can't connect. The wireless adapter is enabled. I need to know what settings in the administrative tools/services should be enabled. The laptop is running Win 7 pro.
Yesterday I had a installation of LMS4.2.2 who was working fine. I followed the procedure to install VMware Tools on the virtual appliance on this thread url...
Now I have a problem with the processes of LMS, but maybe it is not linked. I forget to do a snapshot before installing VMware Tools so I need to find a solution. A whole bunch of services do not start know. I tried to uninstall the VMware tools, to regenerate SSL certificate, I rebooted the server several times. It is running under VMware 5.1. [code]
We are facing issue related to STP.I am getting MAC FLAP error on Cisco 4510 switch. The effect on network is intermittent Pkt drops in the network. When I checked the specific Ip address I am getting the same with two different. [code] Vlan is created on CORE switch and assign priority 0 than CORE switch should be the Root. but instead Root port is becoming the port where server is connected. Server at last connected to CORE switch via HP switch via other Vlan to CORE switch and creating a loop as shown in Diag. [code] The Priority of Vlan 102 is changed and Root port has been changed due to that. The Bridge ID is the same as CORE switch.
We are having issues transferring a 200GB VHD file across our point to point without being corrupted in the process. Any good application for testing the line quality across the point to point?Preferably we want something free, but if there is an in depth tool that costs money, we are open to that option as well.
I always test ethernet family links(E, Fa, Gi) sending pings with MTU equal to 1500. Since most hosts uses MTU 1500 I think is not necessary to test using a high MTU size like 18024.
At our small business I would like to be able to test connecting to some of our websites as an external IP address user outside of our network although still being physically connected to the internal network. Any thoughts on the simplest way to set this up? I have the capability to setup vlans on our switch, could I make one of the vlans/ports have an external connection instead of an internal?
