Networking :: Internet Very Slow Unless Reboot Router Every Few Days WRT160N
Mar 10, 2011
A few weeks ago, I noticed that my Internet connection had slowed down to a crawl. I waited a few days hoping it would go away on its own, but it didn't get better. So I asked this question about how to make it faster.
The problem went away after I updated to the latest firmware, so I didn't follow up too carefully. But every few days since then, my Internet has slowed down again. Unlike before, all I have to do to fix it is open the router administration page and press the "Reboot" button. Nothing else seems to work, though I'm sure there are options I haven't tried.
If it makes a difference, my girlfriend and I both transfer large amounts of data fairly routinely for school (videoconferencing, downloading entire recorded lectures).
The router is a Cisco/Linksys WRT160N v3 that's about a year old. Most of the time, it deals with just two standard Windows 7 laptops.
What could be causing these slowdowns, and how can I get rid of them?
I installed dd-wrt on my router, and I seem to be getting higher and more consistent speeds. Perhaps more importantly, my memory use is fairly constant.

I've recently purchased a WRT160N router, and I'm using it in conjunction with a WMP54G wireless PCI card. I've set the router up to my requirements, and can get a stable wireless connection.. but internet speed seems excessively slow. While I'm able to get up to around 4MB/s transferring files over the network, running speed tests, it consecutively shows my download speed to sit around 400KB/s, whereas I'm able to get a steady 1.1MB/s on another desktop that is wired. Disabling the LAN adapter on that computer, and connecting via wireless, brings down the speed that that computer is able to get to around 400KB/s as well. Hence, I don't think it's my wireless cards, but something to do with the router itself.I'm also experiencing lag spike issues in online games, which I can only attribute to the current wireless setup, because I've previously had no issues with it. All relevant ports are forwarded, so that is not an issue. After doing some Googling on the subject, someone had suggested running SpeedGuide's TCP Optimizer, and changing the RWIN - I ran it, and set it to the 'optimal' settings, and after a reboot the wireless seemed fine - I was getting just a tad under what I should (about 950KB/s).. but after a short while, it just went back to 400KB/s. After further investigation, it seems that Vista automatically changes that RWIN value to optimize network traffic.. but I never had this issue with my old wireless gear, so I can only assume that the way Vista is reacting is based on the way the router is interacting with it.

my PC and laptop are both suddenly running sluggish since yesterday morning. pages take forever to load; slow to start videos, etc. i called ATT this morning...the auto test said i needed to talk to someone because there was a problem noted. but the live rep ran tests and said the speeds were within the norm for my service. i asked her why the auto test reported an issue, and she checked, only to come back to say "it's a problem with the modem." oh, and a new one from them is $80-100+

I have a problem with my internet connection, I live in the university dorm and I connect the internet by wire. When I start the computer on normal mode, the internet is very slowly and sometimes disconnect, and few times just work fine ( doesn't last more than 2 minutes). however, when i put it in safe mode with networking, it works perfectly. Not sure what is the problem.

I have a Linksys WRT160N V2 wireless router that I am using with my Comcast Internet service. When I connect to the router via cable, I get download speeds up to 52Mbs (per www.speedtest.net). When I test my wireless connection, I can only get download speeds up to 14.5 Mbs, even though the Windows “Wireless Network Connection” speed shows 54.0 Mbs. I also verified this with another laptop, and got the same results. I also checked upload speeds, both wired and wireless I get the same speed of 11 Mbs.
Is there some reason I can’t get faster download speeds with a wireless connection?

As of last night my router has been producing slow connectivity when multiple users are connected to it, but it's perfectly fine when only one user is connected. I am on a laptop myself, but we also have a second laptop and a desktop where the modem and router are set up. I have upgraded the firmware so that is up to date. We have Comcast Fiber Optics so my internet speed is normally quite fast even when all of my computers are connected.
I am using DHCP Configuration. My Channel Width is set to 20 MHz and I am using Channel 11. The Security Mode is set to WPA Personal. I had it on WPA2 Personal but I read that changing to WPA Personal might work and so far it doesn't seem to have done anything. I set the Beacon Interval to 50, Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, and RTS Threshold to 2304. Everything else is set to the default factory configuration.
Just today I received a notice that said "Windows has detected an IP Address Conflict", but ever since I reinstalled the Firmware it hasn't come back. I've rebooted both my laptop and the desktop to confirm it hasn't come back as well. I've tried everything that I could think of including reconfiguring my router and restarting my modem as well.

Today I set up a home network:Cable router plugged in to......Homeplug network, (D-Link DHP-307AV/B 200 MBPS PowerLine Homeplugs) plugged in to a LAN port of......a spare adsl router configured as per here: Connecting Additional Routers | Tech Support Forum...with two desktop machines plugged into the LAN ports of the ADSL router. Both of the desktops have got similar specs, are equi-distant from the ADSL router, and are both connected using Ethernet, not wireless. One of them gets a 9MB/sec ADSL [URL]download, the other can't even bring the webpage up and times out if you ask Google to do a search.Taking out the adsl router and plugging the desktop straight into the homeplug gets a network speed of ~13MB/sec on [URL].Plugging a computer directly into the cable modem gives network speeds of ~40MB/sec on [URL] How can I improve on this, and have it so that both machines can access the Interwebnet at a decent bandwidth?

I have a home network with a media center. I have the hauppauge 1212 HD pvr so that I can record video in HD to my hard drive. I want to stream this content to the differnet PCs on my home network. Every TV in my home I have hooked an HTPC to it. I use them to play dvd's. Stream netflixs etc. My problem is that I am getting a terrible transer rate wirelessly. 600 -750 kbps. (tested by transfering large files from pc to pc) All computers have 300Mbps wireless n cards. all are recieving max signals. There are either 3 or 4 pc's connected at a time depending on whether my laptop is connected or not. Obviously this is way to slow to stream video. Made sure my network name is unique. changed to wireless channel 1 I do think I have WEP 64bit encription could this be an issue?

I've just setup a box with Windows Home Server 2011 RC. It's a AMD X2 with 3GB RAM. Everything is fine with that, but I'm noticing my internal network speeds are pretty slow. I'm seeing on average 0.8MB/s transfer speed between my PC's and the server, and between the PC's themselves. I have everything wired through a Linksys WRT54GS router. Is this as much as I can expect from this setup? It's painful trying to copy media files (music, pictures and HD video) to the server at such slow speeds! What would I need to do to get better speeds? I'm assuming a different router could do better.

I recently changed internet provider and rented a D-Link N 300 Router. On most days everything works well. However on some days the internet connection on my new laptop that has Intel Centrino Wireless-N 130 network adapter get really terrible (usually on Friday and Saturday). At first I thought that the problem was with provider, but now I find out that my old laptop that does not support 802.11n (only 802.11g) has excellent internet connection (at the same time when the new laptop struggles).
How can I troubleshoot what is causing this problem - the laptop network adapter or the router? Is there some setting for network adapter to force using 802.11g?
My laptop is running Windows 7, if that matters.

I have copied my computer's time in the router time setup under Time in the "tools" section of the router setup. After a few days of the router being up without a hard restart, it has lost 10 minutes somehow. I went to the logs and cleared them out and then looked at the entry showing that the log was cleared and looked at my computer clock and the time stamp of the log entry, and it was 10 minutes slower than my computer clock that I had originally set it from. I have a clock plugged in by the computer, and my computer always matches the clock that it plugged in, so I know it isn't my computer loosing time. What is going on here? Why does the router loose the correct time after it has been up and not unplugged or rebooted at all? I know that the router will loose the time if you unplug it, but this isn't the case here.

I have setup an Asus RT n16 with 3 computers that support gigabit ethernet and a media server on one floor. On the other floor I have set up a fast ethernet switch (connected to my asus router) which is connected to several fast ethernet enabled computers.
Would the fast ethernet devices slow down the entire gigabit networking to 100mbps connections on my floor - similar to how a wireless n network running at 300mpbs must slow down to 54mbps when a wireless g device is connected to it?

One address is reserved. Not sure what other details you need.Router is used for online gaming, video streaming, and typical internet browsing.

We have a home use WRT160N router linked to a PC desktop and two wireless laptops, Yesterday bought a new I-Phone, but could not link to my network (entered the security key many times). I accidentally connected to computer fix it firm that linked to my PC and wanted a large sum to fix the problem which he said was due to large number of temp?? internet files and once removed he would change the IP address of the desktop computer? Is this diagnosis logical and can I do it on my own. The router is definetely working - both laptops access the internet and I was recently able to hook up a Samsung Blu-Ray player using the same security code I used for the I-Phone.
