Super Slow Wifi Only Computer Only On Home Network

Aug 15, 2012

Normally use internet explorer 9, but I've tried Firefox and Chrome also. For some weird reason the Wi-Fi on my computer is super slow. My roommate has no problems at all. Same issue when only one of us are connected. What's really weird is that it's only on my home network the speed is a problem. At school and at other family members houses everything is working perfectly. I now use wired internet connection, and when I take a speedtest it is around 13MB, so the speed is pretty good.

I can mention that sometimes if my computer has been closed and the cable is taken out, when I turn the computer back on the Wi-Fi is suddenly working perfectly. Only for a while though, and then it's not working anymore. Has happened more rarely recently.I've been having this problem for around 7weeks now. When I first discovered the problem I tried to uninstall the latest updates (among windows updates), and it actually worked. But I want my computer to be up to date, so it's not a go to use those settings.

I have tried to reset the router to factory settings, but that did not work.We share internet with our landlord, so to privatize what we do, it's set up like this: Landlords modem -> switch in our apartment -> wireless router But that should not be problem. It's working on everyone else's computers. My mobile phone as no issues either;I've tried to update the driver on the wireless card, but it's up to date.

Linksys Wireless Router :: E4200 1.0.03 - Web Interface Over Https Is Super Slow

Oct 22, 2011

Just upgraded my E4200 to firmware 1.0.03 (from 1.0.01). I have some new issues, questions, and some outstanding issues.

1) Web interface over https is now painfully slow.
2) Does DDNS work in bridge mode? DynDNS allows the sending of an update without an IP address, so it should be able to work.
3) Does accessing the management interface in bridge mode count as local or remote?
4) I'd really like to be able to get WOL working through the router. I managed to create a static DHCP reservation for 192.168.1.254 to ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff, but I don't think the router added that entry to the ARP table, is there any way to do this.

(I think have WOL forwarded to 192.168.1.254). 5) Should the router be providing some local dns hostnames? For example I have the device name set up in the local network setup, but it won't resolve. Similar for connected devices, especially those with with a DHCP reservation. 6) In bridge mode, does it matter which port is used to connect to the other network device? Does it have to be the WAN port?

Apple Airport Extreme Router - Hawking HWUN3 Wireless Has Become Super Slow?

Jun 19, 2011

For the past year my wireless has been working great and I have being playing games/doing homework with no hassle. Yestetday my internet connection became very slow. After countless restarts, router/modem resets nothing has changed and I only get like 5kb of download speed. Since my internet connection was lost naturally I unplugged the wireless card and re-plugged it, didn't change anything. After that I restarted my computer, but nothing changed. AFTER THAT I unplugged my router, then reset my router to factory settings, which did not change anything. Since everything was backed up I thought I would reinstall Windows 7 to nuke any hidden problems. After 2 reinstalls of Windows 7, nothing has changed. Next I had Comcast reset my connection with them which did not work. Though it did work with my brothers desktop. After some more time just fiddling around my connection went back to lightning speeds. no.....4 hours later my connection went dead.At all times my computer will see my network but it either will not connect to it or it is really really slow now.

D-Link DIR-655 :: Getting Super Slow Download Speeds With Router

Dec 14, 2011

I had my Dir-655 router for over a year & this is is a first. My firmware is 1.21 & I only use my router for gaming when I'm not on my PC for home use. I have only one PC in the house that is not shared, I have also not downloaded any virus or maleware. So the past month I decided to buy a wired ethernet cord to connect to my gaming systems rather than using the wireless option to get an extra bit of speed. That has been working fine up till yesterday when all of a sudden my download speeds dropped from around 20Mb down to barely 1Mb down (I can't even get the speed test site to fully load anymore). The upload & ping remains unchanged though. Only my Download speed is being affected. This is both when I'm on the PC & when I'm online gaming.

I unplugged my D-Link router & plugged my modem directly to my PC & I got back the 20+Mb speed, so the modem or cable company are not at fault (I even called them to see if there were any problems on there end).

-I tried turning off my Firewall on my PC.
-Resetting & rebooting both my modem/router/PC.
-using different DNS numbers.
-using /flushdns.
-using /Iprenew.
-Messing around with my router configurations such as:
 turning off QoS Engine.
 turning off wireless.
 turned of MAC filtering.
 unchecked "Add DHCP Reservation".
 unchecked SIP.

None of it worked. I'm still browsing at around 56k dial up speed for the past day+!I read up on the internet for similar problems, but the only solutions I saw was turning off the firewall on the PC, but that hasn't worked at all.

One Computer's Download Speed On Network Is Slow?

Sep 1, 2012

When connected to my router on my main desktop, I get download speeds of about .3-.85 mbps, I have comcast and a linksys N router, as well as a N wireless adapter in my desktop. If I use my laptop, I get around 10 mbps download speed, (Speeds are as of [URL]) but they still remain at .3 mbps on my desktop. I have tried two different wireless adapters in my computer. One is the Linksys AE2500 Dual Band N adapter, and the other is an ASUS N13 N Adapter. I have gotten the latest drivers of both adapters, but speeds stayed very low. When I connected the computer via ethernet cable, it ran at 16mbps. So I think that something must be wrong with some wireless settings, since I've tried 2 different adapters and was getting the same result, unless both were faulty I suppose. I also don't think it's my router's issue, because the wireless is working great on other wireless devices. I am using windows 7 on the desktop.

Computer Causing Internet To Be Slow On Entire Network

May 4, 2012

I have 2 computers on a network, and 3 devices that use wifi on the same network. Basically when ever computer A is connected, every single computer or device on the network runs extremely slow, if at all. I get anywhere between 1200-2000 ping on pingtest with 2-60% packet loss. Even the speed on the "infected" computer A downloads extremely slow. I'm at a loss for this problem, everything runs slow and its because of the one computer connected to it. I have virus software on this computer, but its not the best so i'm not ruling out malware or viruses right off the bat.

Devices: Blackberry, Iphone, macbook (all wifi)
Computer A
Runs windows xp 32 bit,
amd processor
onboard video

[code].....

The internet modem runs to a router (Dlink dir615) then to a switch (or hub, if you will) and then to the 2 computers. The entire problem is solved by unplugging computer A from the system. But other than that I have no alternative.

Wireless Internet Slow On Single Computer Only?

Aug 2, 2012

It should be known that this is not MY specific issue, it's a friend's issue... but I am posting it for him as I know nothing about networking. Don't worry though, anything you post here I will relay for him to do.Is this a wired or wireless connection issue?

Wireless

How to run and post an ipconfig /all output of the computer(s) in question for review. Here it is:

So here's the deal, my friend has horrible down speed, usually less than 1MB/s according to Speedtest.net, sometimes it hits 2MB/s. However, his brother's in the house have at least 17MB/s, which I can assume is their actual speed that my friend should have... however, he specifically does not.He had a very old wireless card that was installed on his motherboard (desktop PC) that I assumed was the issue upon him first telling me, and from the issues I was personally able to see. For example, he'd constantly disconnect... his internet would just die for him specifically, and then come back. His brother's never lost internet when he did.

After that, I figured his very old wireless card that was installed was just kicking the bucket, so I instructed him to replace it. He went out and bought a new wireless USB adapter, and then uninstalled the network card.Even after all of this, his internet is still poor in terms of down speed. HOWEVER, rather than his internet dying for a few minutes at a time every so often, his internet "stays connected" if that makes sense? For example, we'll be on Skype in a conference call, and his internet will be loading pages very slowly, and Skype will constantly show that it's going from "green - online" to "gray circle - connecting". During this, he's still in Skype, but it's very poor quality from him speaking, and laggy as well.

Dell Inspiron 531 / Slow Wireless On One Computer

Jan 7, 2012

In the past few weeks, my desktop's wireless connection has become impossibly slow and laggy. It takes long times to load and routinely drops or stutters in its connection, which makes online gameplay very inefficient if not impossible. Prior to this, it was running fine.My wife's netbook and my work laptop both run normally and fine off the connection. The ping rates for those computer, tested at the exact same time as my desktop, are both good while my desktop's ping and jitter are horrible. So I have the feeling it is not really a networking issue, but more something with the wireless card or another issue with my desktop itself. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 531, probably about 3 years old, which as I mentioned ran fine with the wireless before. I am running Vista. In the past several months, the computer fan would kick in really hard and often at graphically intense moments though it doesn't do it any more (yes, it is still running at normal speed), so I'm not sure if the card itself was overheated and damaged? Since the others run fine?

The other computers in my house (There are plenty, and even more that come and go.) get a blazing internet connection, and most of them are wireless. Now this computer, which had an extremely quick connection as well all of a sudden dropped off, while the rest of the computers remain fast.I've gone to Speedtest.net before and after this occurred and my speed before was around 12 mb/s, and one time around 4 AM was even upward of 25 mb/s, all of these tests were performed multiple times on different server locations. I JUST did the speedtest, and it came back with .4 mb/s, and the UL speed was 2.0. I honestly can't remember what I averaged with it prior to the problem, but it was definitely higher as well

Networking :: BSD Super User 4015

Mar 18, 2011

I have an old Toshiba Satellite 4015CDT, with Pentium II MMX, 32MB RAM, 4GB HDD. It also has one USB 1.0 port, parallel and serial ports, a 3.5" floppy drive and a CD-ROM drive (probably almost dead). I've installed NetBSD on this machine (full install) and now I want to connect it to the Internet. Although it has one PCMCIA modem card in it, it is obviously not an option.

I've narrowed down my available options to the following:

Connect a USB wireless adapter. I have a Realtek RTL8192U adapter, but although the system gives me the device's name (through dmesg) it fails to recognize it as a network adapter. Connect the laptop to another machine through a serial connection, so that the other machine will serve as a bridge to the Internet. Here is the page from the NetBSD documentation on serial connections. Unfortunately, I was not able to find anything on bridging there.

Status update: tried installing a driver for my adapter using NDISulator on NetBSD. However, the kernel compilation failed. See here.

Status update #2: tried installing using NDISwrapper on Damn Small Linux (kernel 2.4.31). Although the driver installs and ndiswrapper -l shows hardware is present, I cannot configure the network interface (doesn't show up in ifconfig -a and iwconfig). It seems like this adapter is not supported by NDISwrapper (at least it's not mentioned on their wiki.

Very Slow Internet On One Computer

Mar 7, 2013

I just installed a wifi card in the back of my computer. it only seems to recognize about half of the networks that my laptop recognizes (sometimes it doesn't seem to find my own wifi for a while), but shows everything with full green bars. connecting is difficult but can be done. it shows that my connection is healthy, but the internet is very very slow, it takes about a minute to load google. i am comparing the connection on my machine to the one on my laptop, and they seem pretty much identical (this is info i've gathered through ipconfig /all and also network connection details in windows 7). the only different information is that the IPv4 addresses are slightly different for each machine (which i think is correct). when i diagnose the connection it says that ''the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding"

i've tried flushing and renewing and releasing my IP in command, i've rebooted and reset the router about a billion times to no avail, i've got the latest drivers for the wifi card ('sabrent wireless-g 802.11g pci adapter / ralink turbo wireless lan card).. i tried changing my preferred/alternate DNS entries to google and the other one everyone recommends.. nothing is working. the internet is still exceptionally slow and the connection occasionally drops for a second or two.

Windows 7 - Preventing Cisco VPN From Interrupting Home Super User?

Aug 28, 2012

I just got a new laptop, and for the most part have left its settings alone. Today I was trying to get some sharing going between my desktop and the laptop. Both machines are connected to the same wireless network and both machines consider that network to be a Home network. Both are running Win7 Home Premium. It seems like my laptop is aware of my desktop on the network. It can ping it by IP or by computer name. When I go to Network from the laptop, I can see the desktop in the list of computers. However, my desktop cannot ping the laptop, nor can it see it within Network. My desktop has a Homegroup set up, but my laptop says "There is currently no homegroup on the network". I do have network discovery turned on for both machines. Why can my desktop not "talk" to my laptop but it works the other way around?

Update: Disabling the Windows Firewall on the laptop somewhat fixes the problem. With it disabled, my desktop can ping my laptop, but still my laptop can't see the homegroup. Also, it can ping via hostname, which resolves to IPv6, but can't ping via the IPv4 address. Obviously I'd rather not leave my firewall disabled, so I need a more specific fix.

Update 2: Aha! It is the Cisco VPN software I was running to connect to work computers. Once I disconnected and exited from that, the two PCs seemed to be talking normally and the homegroup was visible to the laptop. So now my question has morphed: how can I prevent Cisco VPN from interrupting my home networking?

ES34069-BK-180 How Important Is Dual-gigabit LAN For A Super User Home NAS

Jan 12, 2011

I'm building my own home server based on Ubuntu with 4 drives in RAID 10. Its primary purpose will be NAS and backup.Would I be making a terrible mistake by building a NAS Server with a single Gigabit NIC?

I know the absolute max I can get out of a single Gigabit port is 125MB/s, and I want this NAS to be able to handle up to 6 computers accessing files simultaneously, with up to two of them streaming video.

With Ubuntu NIC-bonding and the performance of RAID 10, I can theoretically double my throughput and achieve 250MB/s (ok, not really, but it would be faster). The drives have an average read throughput of 83.87MB/s according to Tom's Hardware.

The unit itself will be based on the Chenbro ES34069-BK-180 case. With my current hardware choices, it'll have this motherboard with a Core i3 CPU and 8GB of RAM. Overkill, I know, but this server will be doing other things as well (like transcoding video).Unfortunately, the only Mini-ITX boards I can find with dual-gigabit and 6 SATA ports are Intel Atom-based, and I need more processing power than an Atom has to offer.

I would love to find a board with 6 SATA ports and two Gigabit LAN ports that supports a Core i3 CPU. So far, my search has come up empty. Thus, my dilemma.Should I hold out for such a board, go with an Atom-based solution, or stick with my current single-gigabit configuration?

I know there are consumer NAS units with just one gigabit interface (probably most of them), but I think I will demand a lot more from my server than the average home user.
