I have two NAS drives directly connected to my router. I am accessing them through my XP laptop's wireless connection. I am trying to copy a large volume of data from one to the other (28Gb).The problem I have is throughput. I am barely getting 250Kb/s from one drive to the other.Is there a way to speed this up?
View 2 RepliesI'm having a throughput problem with a new ASA 5540 running version 8.2 (1). When trying to access a database server using tcp port 1521 (sqlnet) it is about 10 to 20 times slower than when the database is not behind the firewall. We've been running the same software on a database behind an ASA 5520 running version 8.0 (3) with no problems for years. When I check the cpu usage on the 5540 at the ASDM home page, it is rarely above 20% and never above 30% while this is being tested. I tried testing ftp throughput over the same interface and it was normal with ~320 Mbps average rate transferring a 500 MB file.

Cablemodem <--> router <--> 1231AP(role root bridge with wireless clients) <-> 1231AP(role non-root bridge with wireless clients)Code on both APs: 12.3(8)JEE.Office network generally has less than 3 wireless clients connected at any one time to either AP. AP's are a mere 50' apart; clients are all less than 30' from either AP; they all show excellent signal and connected at 54mbps signaling rates.
All is/has been working very well & very stable with the exception of speed. We have business class service from RR, approx 25mbps dl, 2mbps ul. Any hardwired client to the router switch ports are able to download at speeds averaging 23mbps. Any wireless client connected to either AP is never able to exceed download speeds of 5mbps. With no other wireless clients connected except my one test client, I was not able to exceed 5mbps throughput from either AP that I connected to.
I can confirm that the ethernet connection between the router and root bridge is up at 100mbps-FD and not showing any errors: [code]
Are these very slow thoughput speeds normal of this hardware combination?I did much searching/googling and found claims that by eliminating TKIP it almost doubles the actual wireless speeds our clients can obtain.
I am experiencing slow throughput on a L2L IPsec tunnel that we have between one of our offices on the west coast (WC) US and another on the east coast (EC) US. The tunnel endpoint on the WC resides on a 5510 and a 5545x on the EC. The DIA circuit speed on the WC is 45 Mbps and 200 Mbps on the EC. The throughput of this IPsec tunnel is maxing out at approx. 4 – 5 Mbps. The utilization of the DIA circuits at both offices is under 5% when running various FTP test transfers. Both devices have low memory and CPU utilization.
We have a 2nd office on the EC (45 Mbps DIA) which I built a tunnel on a 5510 with the WC office and it is experiencing the same slow throughput. In covering all my bases we have a colocation facility on the WC and in building a tunnel between the 2 WC offices I WAS seeing close to full line rate speeds over the tunnel. Additionally, I built a tunnel between the 2 EC offices and I saw full line rate speeds. With the physical distance between the WC & EC offices I would expect some loss in throughput speeds but I would not expect it to drop as low as 4 – 5 Mbps. In thinking something may be up with the 5510 in our WC office we shipped a 5505 to the WC office and we built the same IPsec tunnels on it and it is experiencing the same.
In working with our support vendor to try and solve the WC <-> EC throughput issue they had me change the MTU, TCP mss, DF-bit, types of encryption/hash on the IPsec tunnel but nothing has resolved it. We are not showing fragmentation or PMTU issues on the tunnel. In contacting the ISP of our WC office they mentioned that they do not have any type or rate limiting in place. Our WC ISP had a CCIE review our configurations but nothing was found.
We've installed cisco devices accross our site in the last year or so and slowing getting on top of it now. How ever our old unmanaged kit seems to be out performing it. Two Nexus 5020 switches. (switch01 and switch02)
Two Nexus 2232PP fabric extender switches. (switch03 and switch04)
Two Dell R815s with Chelsio and Intel NICs. (host1 and host2)
The servers run Xenserver 6.0, but as part of testing with this I've tried installing RedHat 6.2, VMware ESX 5.0 (vsphere 5).
The issue occurs when using trunking and transferring data from one VLAN to another. Example...
VM1 is in VLAN401 with an IP address of 10.100.40.40. The VM is on Host1. VM2 is in VLAN402 with an IP address of 10.100.50.50. The VM is on Host2.
I've been using a network throughput tool called iPerf to test and I find that I can only get a throughput rate of about 3.0megabits.
If I switch VM2 to be in VLAN401 with an IP address of 10.100.40.41 I get a throughput rate of about 6.7gigabits/sec.
In the above scenario, I'm using a Layer3 interface on the Nexus 5020, but in production we use a Vyatta virtual firewall.
I worked with Citrix for about 3 months and that was a dead end.
I realize this is just a small business switch, basically a rebranded Linksys, but why I'm only getting 200Mbits/s
- 48 port - 10/100/1000 , set to standalone mode
- 3 separate PCs on this switch , all are fast machines with Core 2 duo / plenty of RAM etc...
- all 3 auto-sense 1Gbps connection
I use iperf tool for bandwidth testing and no matter which PC I pick as server, which as client I get about 150 to 250Mbits/s
I am not looking for full 1000 here, but 200 seems rather sad....
- jumbo frames seem to make no difference
- I am using TCP test in iperf , standard no extra flags , 10 seconds, 20 seconds or even 30 seconds all come out the same.
- wiring is shady as some of it is just Cat5 , but when going from one laptop on the switch to another with brand new Cat6 cables I STILL only got 200.
I've just upgraded to FIOS quantum service. (50 MB down, 25 up). I have a Linksys 2500 connected to the FIOS router. The FIOS (ActionTec) router provides the full advertised speeds with any speed test service I try. But with the 2500 connected to the FIOS router I get download speeds about 3MB. The MTU on the linksys is 1500. It's connected correctly and is running it's own DHCP server. (Why am I doing this? I try to avoid the ActionTec routers, they have broken many services in the past.)The 2500 firmware is up to date. I've tested on the wireless and wired (ethernet) interfaces.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently built a server for home use as i have 6 computers in the house and would like to access all of my information on all of them. The idea was just to have a place for storage and not so much application use. i don't want to have to enter a password every time i try to access a folder and i don't want to use Active Directory if i can avoid it. The server itself is running Windows Server 2008 R1 Enterprise Edition 64 bit. (my office had extra copies that they had no use for) I have an iMac, Windows 7 computers and one Linux box.
It does not matter what computer i use or what settings i seem to apply, but I cannot get into the hard drives of the server. I set it up with 2 sets of 2TB drives each set up in RAID 1 for backup. i have done such things before in windows xp and i thought it would be the same.
I have just noticed that both drives are missing. How to get them back I am on windows xp.

The Win7 PC connects fine and authenticates but I am not able to see shared drives on the server.It says it is connected with PPTP, I would prefer SSTP. How do I enforce SSTP as the default connection type? I tried this from the VPN client and it wont connect at all.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just set up a VPN connection from my laptop (Win 7) to my office network using Netgear Prosafe VPN client software to my Netgear Prosafe VPN router. I can connect successfully to the router and can successfully ping any of the devices on my work network. Currently, there are shared drives on the work network that I'd like to access from the laptop. All file sharing options are set so that other local machines can access through the network (the drive I'm trying to access runs off of an XP machine). Any attempts at mapping or using \ipaddressfile come back with a "windows cannot access" message.
View 8 Replies View RelatedOur company has a SBS 2003 server, Netgear UTM10 router, 16 pcs. They all have static IPs assigned, and mapped drives to the server for different applications and files. Recently one machine (which I suspect has been using means to avert the UTM rules) lost connectivity to the server.I was able to get it restored.Upon getting it back on the server the user could access email and internet, but nothing else.All drives showed disconnected. The only way I could get them to connect again, was to remove the static ip address and dns information and let the pc choose.If I rebooted and put it back in, it lost the drives again.

By the end of the day if untouched I can have approx 20 of them!To give you more information about the scenario, the computer is on Windows 7 pro, it is on a domain in which the server is 2008 r2, there are 2 network drives in total (only one is duplicating), the only 2 changes I recall that may have caused it is box.net is running on the server syncing all content on the networks drives and a new printer has been added on the network.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have set up a Home Server only running Windows 7 32Bit and all it does is store files and stream them to the devices around my LAN which is no problem because all I have to do is map the Network drive onto all the computers and when I want to manage and download files I just RDC to my lil server machine. Though what I'd really like is for my girlfriend to be able to stream media from it aswell though she lives 7 miles away so it would have to be done over the internet though I don't knowhow I could map the drives to her computer over the internet. I don't want to allow her to remote on and access the computer that way I just want her to have a selection of networked mapped drives to it in windows explorer is there ayway of doing this for free?

I have two external hard drives that are currently connected to the desktop and a printer on the desktop. I believe that I need a NAS adapter and a print sever to connect the drives and the printer to the network rather than to the desktop compuer, which is going away. How then do I identify the drves and the printer when they are directly connected to the network? Is that something I do when I install the NAS adapter and print server?

I have an older machine I want to essentially use as a NAS type device over my home network to stream content from, but want all the installed drives to essentially be "merged" together to show as just one if possible. I think its sometimes referred to as "disk pooling". I have XP Pro available to install so maybe this has something built-in that can easily handle this task. It also needs to be done on an XP based machine (not Linux) due to some other specialized software that will be running on it for another reason and is for XP only. Basically, any suggestions on how to have some sort of 'disk pooling' for 2+ drives on an XP machine? Can it simply be done within XP Pro? Or maybe there is some sort of free software out there that can handle this. This machine currently doesn't have any important data on it so experimenting and wiping something out can be done if needed.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a network with a Western Digital NAS. Several computers are on the network, some connected via ethernet cable and some via wireless. The NAS has several shares that are password protected so that only certain users can map to them - each PC has its own private share used for backup.
The problem device is a Fujitsu Seimens Amilo laptop with Vista as the OS. When trying to display a map of the full network it is unable to display one - I have tried all of the solutions described by the Vista help but none of them work.When using Map Network Drive and trying to browse for the NAS, nothing is seen - the only computer showing on the network is the Vista laptop. If I type in the share name using \nas_nameshare_name it won't connect but if I use the IP address, such as \192.168.0.101share_name, then it does connect. I enter the password, select Reconnect at logon and the drive is mapped.
If I put the laptop to sleep the drive is still mapped when it wakes. The drive remains mapped for as long as the laptop is on but if I reboot it then the drive is lost. In fact, there are two mapped drives, one with a password and one without. After a reboot the drive with the password is still showing, but as a disconnected drive (double clicking brings up the password entry screen, and then the drive will be mapped). The drive without the password just isn't there at all.
I have w7 and the D-Link DIR-655 router.I just replaced the same router that crapped out on me.I'm online with no issues but for some reason, I can't map some of my computers to one another. At first, it seemed like it was going well on a couple of them. Others ask for the windows password.I'm not sure, but I think it's the Homegroup password?I remember one of the the homegroup passwords and all computers are joined, but the only password I recall/know isn't working on any computers.
Questions: Can't I map network drives through the router functionality and do away with the homegroups altogether? I'd really like to do that. I'm not really impressed with homegroups.

I have a wireless router for my internet connection and network sharing. I also have a tenant in the basement who I allow to share the wireless connection. I have four PCs that connect wirelessly to the router, one with Vista, the others with XP. Is there anyway that I could share drive contents on my PCs over the network whilst ensuring that the tenant couldn't access these files?

However, I purchased a wireless router and simply plugged this into the main router which allows internet access but does not allow access to other wired computers. If I directly plug the server into this wireless router with this router being wired to the main router, then the wired computers cannot access the server. It's as if it creates its own little network. So, I connected this directly to the main router which gives internet access but nothing else.
(Note: I cannot simply install a new main router.)
I believe I need a wireless access point, but I'm not certain.
