Cisco Switching/Routing :: SGE2010 - Slow Gigabit Throughput?

May 4, 2010

I realize this is just a small business switch, basically a rebranded Linksys, but why I'm only getting 200Mbits/s

- 48 port - 10/100/1000 , set to standalone mode

- 3 separate PCs on this switch , all are fast machines with Core 2 duo / plenty of RAM etc...

- all 3 auto-sense 1Gbps connection

I use iperf tool for bandwidth testing and no matter which PC I pick as server, which as client I get about 150 to 250Mbits/s

I am not looking for full 1000 here, but 200 seems rather sad....

- jumbo frames seem to make no difference

- I am using TCP test in iperf , standard no extra flags , 10 seconds, 20 seconds or even 30 seconds all come out the same.

- wiring is shady as some of it is just Cat5 , but when going from one laptop on the switch to another with brand new Cat6 cables I STILL only got 200.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Slow Throughput Between 3750 Etherchannel

We've installed cisco devices accross our site in the last year or so and slowing getting on top of it now. How ever our old unmanaged kit seems to be out performing it. It's most like down to my misconfiguration which has lead me to here. Below is the details of hardware and configuration between devices. 3750 Core consisting of the following stacked. Cisco Switching/Routing :: 5020 - Slow Throughput Between Two VLANs

Feb 14, 2012

When transferring traffic between two VLANs my throughput rate seems to drop to about 1.5 - 3.0 megabits / second.

My setup is like this...

Two Nexus 5020 switches. (switch01 and switch02)
Two Nexus 2232PP fabric extender switches. (switch03 and switch04)
Two Dell R815s with Chelsio and Intel NICs. (host1 and host2)

The servers run Xenserver 6.0, but as part of testing with this I've tried installing RedHat 6.2, VMware ESX 5.0 (vsphere 5).

The issue occurs when using trunking and transferring data from one VLAN to another. Example...

VM1 is in VLAN401 with an IP address of 10.100.40.40. The VM is on Host1. VM2 is in VLAN402 with an IP address of 10.100.50.50. The VM is on Host2.

I've been using a network throughput tool called iPerf to test and I find that I can only get a throughput rate of about 3.0megabits.

If I switch VM2 to be in VLAN401 with an IP address of 10.100.40.41 I get a throughput rate of about 6.7gigabits/sec.

In the above scenario, I'm using a Layer3 interface on the Nexus 5020, but in production we use a Vyatta virtual firewall.

I worked with Citrix for about 3 months and that was a dead end.

All other switches are OK and do not show anything in their logs. I am trying to figure out what could be going wrong. Spanning tree is enabled on all switches. The switch tihs is happening on, ends in the ip 172 and is where all building cables connect to. They also connect to 174. I have attached an image of the infrastructure so you can visually see what i mean.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: SGE2010 Vlan Is Not Routing?

May 16, 2012

I have 4 SGE2010P switches in L3 stacked mode in my production environment. I am having trouble routing traffice to/from my vlans.  I have successfully set this up in a test environment and have compared switch settings, but still having trouble in the production environment.

Main network:

192.168.0.0/24, DG 192.168.0.1
Vlan 1 interface on switch: 192.168.0.253/24
Vlan 22 interface on switch: 192.168.22.1/24
Vlan 23 interface on switch: 192.168.23.1/24

I have assigned port 1/g14 to Vlan 23.  I have enabled DHCP Relay and Option 82.  I have set DHCP interface to Vlan 23.  Static routes auto-genned as shown in image below.  My DHCP server is on 192.168.0.16 on Vlan 1.  It has a scope for 192.168.23.0/24 to give a DG of 192.168.23.1 (Vlan 23 IP address).I cannot get DHCP to give me an address from the .23 scope.  So I tried to hard code an IP address into the client.  When I did this, the switch sees the machine just fine, I can ping 192.168.0.253 (Vlan 1 IP address), but cannot ping any other IP on Vlan 1 (192.168.0.0/24)Do I need a static route somewhere that I am missing?  I didn't need to on my test network, so I am a bit stumped.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 4X SGE2010 / Two Root Bridges In Network

Oct 16, 2012

I have a setup where - I have a cisco stack (4X SGE2010 Switches)  trunking over to a 3COM switch.  Both switches believe to be the "ROOT" of the network. Note The 3COM is running RSTP as opposed to the Cisco Stack which is running normal STP. To my understanding of STP - Essentially STP is not functioning! Both switches believe to be the "ROOT" so they don't shut ports down. (We are currently having major issues with ports going up and down for seconds at a time on both switches)

Cisco Switching/Routing :: SGE2010 Switches Stack Dropping Ports

Oct 12, 2012

Our environment consits of 4 cisco SGE2010 switches (stacked). I have implemented STP BPDUGUARD and Portfast on all client ports (suspected a loop). And our uplink to the Server DMZ recieves almost all of it's BPDU packets back(is that normal?) The issues lies where we have random ports dropping out - across all stacks for seconds at a time. We get errors/warning such as,Pinging between the DMZ network appears to be fine. Pinging from the client/switch network show packets being dropped quite frequently. All devices are on VLAN1 (I've have researched this and this could be the cause of the issue)

Cisco Switching/Routing :: SGE2010 / DHCP Offer But No ACK From Client On VLan?

Jun 26, 2012

1 Cisco switch stack (SGE2010) in L3 mode, 2 Vlans.

Vlan 1 = 192.168.0.253/24, untagged on all ports except 14/15
Vlan 2 = 192.168.22.1/24, untagged on port 14 and 15
SGE2010 default route 0.0.0.0/0 next hop 192.168.0.1 (Checkpoint UTM)
DHCP Relay enabled
DHCP server set to 192.168.0.16
DHCP interface set to Vlan2

[code]....

Expanding the ICMP entry, it appears that the destination is the pc client since it shows a Dell mac address,  and the source is the Checkpoint UTM (Sofaware).

I can ping and tracert from the Checkpoint to my static IP on Vlan 2.  The same goes for the DHCP server to/from Vlan2, so I am confused as to why the routing is failing.  I have tried adding Port Fast to the stack ports, but nothing changes.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: Throughput Of Etherchannel On 3560G

Nov 27, 2012

We have a problem with the throughput over etherchannel in LACP with 2 or 4 ports. It is iSCSI traffic (vmware esxi 4.1 U3) is going from 2 separate NICs (ports) to the etherchannel (with 2 or 4 ports) that has a SAN connected (Nexenta).

The SAN is configured in passive LACP and the switch is in active LACP.  Actually it does not matter if we do LACP or just MODE ON, still same result: ~1GBit/s throughtput in either direction.  Like already mentioned, 2 or 4 ports in the etherchannel make no difference, or the configuration of the etherchannel.

I will post some config data below, but here is the question: Why can't we see traffic beyond 1GBit/s?  Source and destination are capable of doing much more than that (vmware esxi RAID 5 of 1TB SATA; SAN 16 x 1TB NL-SAS). If we look with CNA, we can see that the traffic is balanced equally over the etherchannel ports. With or without QOS or flowcontrol, no difference. This whole traffic happenes on this switch.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 2950 - IPERF Throughput Comparison

Mar 2, 2012

I am currently using catalyst 4506 L3 switch and 2950 L2 switches for pc's which are EOL. I am replacing L3 with 3750X, two switches in a stack. L2 is 2960S all with gbps ports. I have to have a baseline (performance comparison with the current setup and new setup) and I am using the following methods

1. Iperf throughput comparison among local vlans

2. Iperf throughput comparison with remote data centers servers.

3. Ping/ftp upload/download comparison with remote DC's. FTP file is around 3GB.

Today I have tested the above with the new setup and compared it with the old setup. For the tasks 1 & 3 I found better performance with the new setup. However the task 2 did not show any performance increase infact the throughput was much lower comparing to the old setup.

Cisco Firewall :: Slow SQLnet Throughput On ASA 5540?

When trying to access a database server using tcp port 1521 (sqlnet) it is about 10 to 20 times slower than when the database is not behind the firewall. We've been running the same software on a database behind an ASA 5520 running version 8.0 (3) with no problems for years. When I check the cpu usage on the 5540 at the ASDM home page, it is rarely above 20% and never above 30% while this is being tested. I tried testing ftp throughput over the same interface and it was normal with ~320 Mbps average rate transferring a 500 MB file.

Cisco :: AP1231G-A-K9 Access Points / Very Slow Throughput

Jul 17, 2012

I recently setup our small office network using the following setup:

Cablemodem <--> router <--> 1231AP(role root bridge with wireless clients) <-> 1231AP(role non-root bridge with wireless clients)Code on both APs: 12.3(8)JEE.Office network generally has less than 3 wireless clients connected at any one time to either AP. AP's are a mere 50' apart; clients are all less than 30' from either AP; they all show excellent signal and connected at 54mbps signaling rates.

All is/has been working very well & very stable with the exception of speed. We have business class service from RR, approx 25mbps dl, 2mbps ul. Any hardwired client to the router switch ports are able to download at speeds averaging 23mbps. Any wireless client connected to either AP is never able to exceed download speeds of 5mbps. With no other wireless clients connected except my one test client, I was not able to exceed 5mbps throughput from either AP that I connected to.

I can confirm that the ethernet connection between the router and root bridge is up at 100mbps-FD and not showing any errors: [code]

Are these very slow thoughput speeds normal of this hardware combination?I did much searching/googling and found claims that by eliminating TKIP it almost doubles the actual wireless speeds our clients can obtain.

Cisco VPN :: 5510 - Slow Throughput On L2L IPsec Tunnel

Jan 8, 2013

I am experiencing slow throughput on a L2L IPsec tunnel that we have between one of our offices on the west coast (WC) US and another on the east coast (EC) US. The tunnel endpoint on the WC resides on a 5510 and a 5545x on the EC. The DIA circuit speed on the WC is 45 Mbps and 200 Mbps on the EC. The throughput of this IPsec tunnel is maxing out at approx. 4 – 5 Mbps. The utilization of the DIA circuits at both offices is under 5% when running various FTP test transfers. Both devices have low memory and CPU utilization.

We have a 2nd office on the EC (45 Mbps DIA) which I built a tunnel on a 5510 with the WC office and it is experiencing the same slow throughput. In covering all my bases we have a colocation facility on the WC and in building a tunnel between the 2 WC offices I WAS seeing close to full line rate speeds over the tunnel. Additionally, I built a tunnel between the 2 EC offices and I saw full line rate speeds. With the physical distance between the WC & EC offices I would expect some loss in throughput speeds but I would not expect it to drop as low as 4 – 5 Mbps. In thinking something may be up with the 5510 in our WC office we shipped a 5505 to the WC office and we built the same IPsec tunnels on it and it is experiencing the same.

In working with our support vendor to try and solve the WC <-> EC throughput issue they had me change the MTU, TCP mss, DF-bit, types of encryption/hash on the IPsec tunnel but nothing has resolved it.  We are not showing fragmentation or PMTU issues on the tunnel. In contacting the ISP of our WC office they mentioned that they do not have any type or rate limiting in place. Our WC ISP had a CCIE review our configurations but nothing was found.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: ASA 5520 - NAT Capable Device With High Throughput

Jan 26, 2012

I'll have to replace an old WS-C3550-24. Reasons for this: EOL/EOS & we'll need a NAT capable device...

As I understood, the only L3 catalyst that is able to perform NAT is a 6500? Is that correct? If the above is correct, it seems I can only replace the setup by using a router/ASA with a L2 switch. A router with high throughput (+/- 300Mbps) is hard to find, especially as NAT will require CPU resources...

So, my best (affordable price) solution is getting an ASA5520 (450Mbps FW throughput) and a L2 switch?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3750G - Maximum Throughput Reduced By Stacking Or Any Of Other Features

Mar 21, 2012

We are experiencing output drops on our 3750G-12S (IOS 12.2.55).

I have monitored throughput with MRTG, but it doesn't seem that high compared to that the 3750G is supposed to handle 17.8 Mpps.

The 3750G's are stacked, running ospf, qos, multicast (IPTV) and etherchannel. Is the maximum throughput reduced by stacking or any of the other features?

I don't know if one can estimate what the maximum throughput is per ASIC or per port, but on one of the ASICs that is having drops the peak unicast load is 1.3 Mpps and multicast Mpps is 0.9 Mpps. Total ~2.2 Mpps.

This doesn't seem high at all and I don't understand why the drops are appearing. What I can do to find out the reason for these drops?

Cisco Switching/Routing :: 3845 Gigabit Interface

Oct 26, 2011

We have a number of 3845 routers, some running IOS 12.4(22)T2 and earlier and some running 12.4(24)T4.  On the ones with 12.4(22)T2 and earlier, gigabit interface g0/1 shows interface down/line protocol down when there is no cable connected to the interface and the interface is not in shutdown state.  On the ones with 12.4(24)T4, gigabit interface g0/1 shows interface up/line protocol down when there is no cable connected to the interface and the interface is not in shutdown state.  Interestingly in both cases, the "show controller g0/1" command shows " network link is down (NO CARRIER)" when there is no cable attached.  It makes sense to us that the interface status would be down/down when there is no cable attached.  It does not makes sense to us that the interace would be up/down.  Did Cisco at some point change their philosophy on whether an interface should show down/down or up/down when there is no cable attached, or is this a bug?

I have deleted all the config files before booting up the switchs so they should have a default blank configuration.

When looking at the Http web page for the switch I dont see any issues with the port. what can I do to make sure these ports are working or can be configured?

I will not be able to post back any more information about the switch until next tuesday. Im off till then.
