Dell :: Extremely Slow Ethernet Connection - XPS 8500

Apr 14, 2013

I have recently purchased a new Dell XPS 8500 desktop computer (running Windows 7) to replace my old Dell XPS 420 that died.

I have set up the internet connection on the new computer, however the Ethernet connection is painfully slow. Most webpages take forever to load, that is if they load at all. However, when I use my laptop on wireless, the speed is fine so there is no problem with the network - it must be an issue with the computer.

The laptop also works fine when connected via Ethernet.

Is there something hidden away in Internet settings that could be the cause of the slow speed, or could I just have a dodgy network card? I could easily buy a network card as there are empty slots to install. The computer will be under warranty, but would probably be easier to buy a network card for a few dollars and install myself rather than have someone come out.

I ran the Bigpond ADSL installation disk to install the relevant drivers and configure the settings automatically. I use a T-Gateway TG797n v3.

Dell :: Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Not Reaching Gigabit

I'm running an Optiplex 330 with the Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit ethernet card.

The computer is running Windows 7, 64bit, but there do not appear to be any drivers for that OS.I tried selecting Vista 64bit, but there were no drivers. The Vista 32bit doesn't work.

Then I went to Broadcom and found these drivers: [URL] the W764bit drivers didn't change the fact i'm still on a 100Mbit card (as seen on  Local Area Connection Status screen and the Device manager)

Dell :: XPS 8500 - Losing Network Connection

Sep 29, 2012

I am having a very frustrating problem with my new Dell XPS 8500's wireless connection - Dell Wireless 1703 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz). Basically, I am losing my network connection every couple of minutes. The process goes something like this:

1) Not connected - Connections are available

2) My network disappears completely (yet all other local networks are still visible) for a matter of seconds then reappears

3) I try to connect and receive "Windows was unable to connect"

4) I press "Troubleshoot problems"

5) "Resolving problems", "Resetting network adapter", "Troubleshooting has completed"

6) Problem with wireless adapter or access point - Fixed

7) I am reconnected to the network/internet with a full 5 bars

8) Process repeats itself five minutes later

I have been able to come to a conclusion that is not the adapter, or the router, but some sort of compatibility issue as:

a) I have tried connecting to a different wireless network and it has worked fine

b) There are other systems in the household that connect to the network and are not experiencing the same issue

It is not a distance issue as router is 2 meters away from the adapter with nothing in between, the other systems that use the network are much further away.

What I have tried so far: - Changing the channel from "Auto" to a set number

The router is a Belkin N300 Wireless N.

Dell :: XPS 8500 Special Edition - Internet Drops Every 5-10 Seconds

May 6, 2013

I've been having an issue with my Dell, when it goes into Power Save Mode (not Sleep or Hibernate), my Graphics Card crashes and I can't see anything when I move the mouse to Wake Up my screen. This is something I have come to live with since I hear the Power Supply for my Graphics Card is too weak (AMD 7870). Sometimes, I have to do a Hard Reboot by holding the Power button and then restarting the computer.

I did that yesterday and realized that my internet connection keeps cutting every 5-10 seconds (literally). I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate. What I did so far was uninstall the driver and get the latest one. That hasn't worked at all.

I have 2 other devices connected to my Wi-Fi, a Dell Laptop that is working perfectly and a smartphone. Both of these haven't been dropping the connection at all. I'm thinking that either something became corrupt by doing my Hard Reboots or it's some kind of compatibility issue. I bought this computer in November 2012 and haven't had an issue like this since but now I can't do anything on web because it takes ages to visit websites.

Home Network :: Gigabit Slow - They Say I Should Be Seeing At Least 20MB/s?

Oct 9, 2011

Last month I decided to upgrade my network and switch everything from 10/100 to 10/100/1000 (gigabit). My setup I'm struggling with right now :

Desktop Running Win 7 x64 with a 1 gigabit NIC (running latest drivers from Intel)

Linksys E3200 Router w/ Cisco 10/100/1000 x 4 ports (Latest firmware)

USB 2.0 NAS with a WD 160SB HD 7200rpm (100MB/s)

On file transfers from the NAS connected to the Router, connected to the desktop with a CAT 5e 5ft cable, I'm pulling 9.5 MB/s MAX

Everyone I talk to say, "wow, that's what 10/100 runs" and that I'm not running one gigabit. They say I should be seeing at least 20MB/s. What am I doing wrong here? I've trying play with buffer size, settings on the NIC, MTU on the router. I'm lost at what to do.

Gigabit NIC Slow Upload On 1.0Gbps But Ok On 100 Mbps?

Mar 28, 2011

I have a PC with an onboard Realtek 8168 PCIe Gigabit connected to a D-Link 655 Gigabit router. Here's the odd situation: when speed/duplex is set to 100Mbps, my upload speed using www.Speedtest.net is fine (~3.0 Mbps). However, when I switched it over to 1.0Gbps, it goes down all the way to 0.06 Mbps. Download speed is generally unaffected. can't tell which is the likely culprit!

Onboard NIC faulty/underpowered?

Faulty cable (highly doubt, I've tried 5+)?

Or is it a matter of settings? I turned off QoS and WISH on the router, but it didn't do much.

Cisco Switching/Routing :: SGE2010 - Slow Gigabit Throughput?

May 4, 2010

I realize this is just a small business switch, basically a rebranded Linksys, but why I'm only getting 200Mbits/s

- 48 port - 10/100/1000 , set to standalone mode

- 3 separate PCs on this switch , all are fast machines with Core 2 duo / plenty of RAM etc...

- all 3 auto-sense 1Gbps connection

I use iperf tool for bandwidth testing and no matter which PC I pick as server, which as client I get about 150 to 250Mbits/s

I am not looking for full 1000 here, but 200 seems rather sad....

- jumbo frames seem to make no difference

- I am using TCP test in iperf , standard no extra flags , 10 seconds, 20 seconds or even 30 seconds all come out the same.

- wiring is shady as some of it is just Cat5 , but when going from one laptop on the switch to another with brand new Cat6 cables I STILL only got 200.

TL-SG1005D - Ubuntu - Slow Write Speeds On New Gigabit Home File Server

Jun 26, 2013

So I finally got all my parts delivered to setup a home file/backup server this week.

It's currently running Ubuntu Server and I'm using Samba to share files on my network.

The server currently has a 2TB WD Green drive in it connected to a Asus M5A78L-M

This is then connected via CAT6a to my new Gigabit switch (TP-Link TL-SG1005D).
My home desktop is then also connected to this switch and again also through CAT6a cable.

Currently when transfering files I will get a perfect 100MB/s read from the server to my Windows machine. When copying from my Windows machine to the server I get around 30/38MB/s.

I know this drive is capable is faster speeds.

I have found ftp's write speed is much closer to what my Samba read speed is so I'm going to give it a guess that is a software problem rather than hardware

Slow Wired Connection On Netgear N600 WNDR3700v1 Dual Band Gigabit Router?

Aug 6, 2012

I have a Netgear N600 WNDR3700v1 Dual Band Gigabit router and am having a problem with the wired connection with my PC. Everything wireless in the house works fine. In fact, I also have a Direct TV box hooked up for on demand and a sling box hooked up (both wired) and they work find. It's just my PC that is having issues. If I bypass the router and hook straight into the modem, it runs fine also so I have something going on between the router and this PC. I updated the NIC driver and this did not work. Before the update in the device manager, it said it was a NIVIDA nForce Network Controller (if I remember right) and now it says NIVIDA nForce 10/100 Mpbs Ethernet. It was suggested that I change my speed and duplex to match the router after I update but I am unsure what to change it to.

Dell :: Upgrading To Gigabit NIC In Dimension 1100 / B110?

Dec 11, 2008

I have a Linksys 10/100/1000 Gigabit NIC (m/n EG1032), which I've tried installing in my Dimension 1100/B110 without success.  I followed the installation instructions from Linksys (i.e., open case and add card to motherboard, then start PC, at which point WINXP Pro should identify the new hardware and I would then select the driver from the disk.  However, the "Found New Hardware" never came up.  The Dimension 1100/B110 comes with an Intel Pro 100 NIC onboard.  I next tried to disable the onboard NIC through the Hardware Manager, and use the Add Hardware feature in the Control Panel, but it didn't find the new NIC on the first go round.  So, I installed the driver utilizing the "Have Disk" option.  The Linksys NIC was installed, but stated that it might not work properly, and a look at the Hardware Manager confirmed that there was a problem (a yellow exclaimation point next the the new device and a Code/Error 10 in the Details section).    The yellow light on the new NIC did flash when the ethernet cable was plugged in, but it didn't connect to the network.  The Windows Troubleshooter recommended removing and restarting the PC, but the new NIC still was not found when Windows booted up.  I next restarted the PC, went into the Bios and disabled the network interface.  The PC took forever to restart into Windows, and still the new hardware was not recognized.   I'm wondering whether there is a pin on the motherboard that I need to short, in order to be able to install a new NIC, or if there's some changes I need to make in the Windows software someplace.  I've restored the Bios setting and have enabled the onboard NIC in the interim, so as to be able to access the internet and my network printer.

Dell :: Optiplex GX620 - Using Gigabit In Local Area Network?

Very soon for the second time we will be replacing systems in our (grad school) student computer Lab from the time of its opening in January, 1998. The monitors are recessed down below glass desk surfaces and are 17-inch CRT (Dell). Our current (medium) computers are SFF GX-150 and have 512MB RAM (doubled from the original 256) and 80 GB hard drives. The new GX620 will have 2GB RAM, 160MB hard drive. In addition, our current 10/100 Ethernet LAN for this part of the campus is also supposed to be upgraded to Gigabit (switch). Any experience of using Gigabit in an organization's local area network to find out any concerns for which I should be alert as we begin this new phase. Incoming students arrive before middle of August so the switch-out needs to be done fairly quickly and smoothly. What concerns should I have?

Dell Inspiron 4150 / Gigabit Network Options For Older Laptop

I recently switched to a Doccis 3.0 modem from Comcast and the laptop doesn't seem to get along with it too well. Are there any options for me to be able to get a Gigabit ethernet adapter for this older laptop? As far as the expansion slots go, the laptop has a Cardbus controller (Texas Instruements 1420 Cardbus controller) and as far as the PC Card connectors go, it has 2(supports 2 Type I or II cards or 1 Type III card with the PCMCIA being 16 bits and the Cardbus being 32 bits).

Is there such thing as a Gigabit ethernet pc card that this laptop would support? If not, what other options are there?

Cabling / Cards :: Broadcom Gigabit Controller Won't Recognize Cable (Dell XPS 1640)

A few days ago, I noticed that my computer wasn't picking up my wired connection anymore while the wireless connection was still working fine. I opened up my network adapters and my Local Area Connection adapter wasn't even showing anymore, only the Wireless adapter. I updated my drivers, tried different cables and even a different router but still no dice. This morning, when I booted up my system, Windows said it was installing driver software for Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet Controller. I got really excited when I saw Local Area Connection in my adapter menu and plugged in my ethernet cable. Nothing happened and my laptop refuses to recognize the ethernet cable plugged in to it. It's a Dell XPS 1640, Windows 7 x64 with Service Pack 1.

P.S. Usually a little orange light appears in the ethernet port on my computer when a chord is plugged in. When I turned on my computer this morning with the chord in, the light was on. When Windows finished booting, the light went off.

Dell :: Intel 82567LM Gigabit LAN Card Connecting At 10 Mbps - How To Disable Power Mgt On NIC

May 23, 2010

How do I disable the power management feature that slows my NIC down when I am on battery power?

I have a dell e6500 with a Intel 82567LM Gigabit LAN card that always connects at 10Mbps when I plug in the ethernet cord when I am on battery power, I've tried using different routers (I have two gigabit routers and one 100 mbps router)... it still auto-negotiates at 10 mbps I've tried using different cat6 cables, it still auto-negotiates at 10 mbps.I've checked the drivers, I have 10.0.6.0, which is the latest from the support.dell.com website.

However, the minute I plug in the laptop, the NIC connects at the proper speed.  Essentially, when the laptop is using battery power, the NIC decreases it's speed to 10 mbps.  When I plug the laptop in, the speed jumps up to what it should be (either 100 mpbs or 1 Gbps, depending on which router I'm plugged in to).

So, how do I disable this feature?  I want to connect at the maximum possible speed, regardless if I am plugged in or not.
