I have an HP DV7-1135nr running vista 64bit. Due to lack of space and generally needing to be refreshed, I used my recovery CDs to "factory reset" my laptop to the way it was when I bought it. After it finished I attempted to use the Internet wirelessly and it would only connect locally. I chose to repair the signal in the "network and sharing" window and it said it could not communicate with the DNS server. I plugged in the Ethernet cable and it jumped right online. I used windows update and after 4 hours of updates and restarts, I tried wireless again it only connects locally. Back to ethernet I logged onto HP website and tried to scan my computer for driver updates with there tool but the site was down. I checked my adapter and it is an atheros 5007 but when I searched for atheros or atheros drivers I couldn't find anything that seemed legit. They don't have a website? I read forums and found posts of people shutting off a DHCP broadcast flag with good luck. I found a few having problems with the same adapter as myself but none of this started until I restored it this time. ( I have restored it 2 times before with no problem). My next step was shutting off all the security. It worked and everything was great until i turned the security back on. It reverts back to local only. I tried wpa, wpa2 and no luck. The only thing I can think of is that my drivers are old, I checked the version of windows and it still is on sp1, why hasn't it updated to sp2 yet?

Local Access Only on Vista PC
I restored an old Vista laptop to out-of-the-box state to give to my Dad. This laptop had a wireless connection to the internet and network previously. After the restore, I can't get a connection to the internet, even though my router sees it and it has an ip address. It says Unidentified Network Local Access only, and it doesn't see any of the computers on the network. Sometimes the other computers see it but can't connect, sometimes, the other computers don't see it. I hate Vista.
Stats on Laptop:
Toshiba A215-S4747
Atheros AR5007EG
All my other eight devices have an internet connection no problem, but I powered off the modem and router a couple of times with no change. I tried updating the Atheros to the latest driver on Toshiba's website for this model, but it doesn't seem to take. If I uninstall the old drivers, Windows rudely just immediately reinstalls them again. If I just update the driver, and pick the new file, the driver version remains the same as the previous driver. I'm banging my head on the wall with the driver
Ping successful on:
192.168.1.11 (the laptop's IP address)
localhost

I have had this issue for a while now and i have attempted many things even restoring Windows back to factory settings. My HP Windows laptop connects fine to my BT home hub 3 via wireless with no issues but the ethernet connection just recognises a local network and has no internet connectivity.my ethernet connection just never gets an IP address and always assigns itself a 169.x.x.x address.Originaly thinking it may be a hardware issue i booted into a Linux live cd to double check and the ethernet connection worked with no issues at all.I have tried numeorus things to try and resolve it-updated drivers / alternative drivers reset TCP/IP restored windows back to factory installation assiginged static IP address removed anti virus / firewall software different router

My HP laptop connects to our wnr0003(or whatever it is) router but it says local only. When we took it to best buy, it connected there to the Internet oddly. And even odder, last year we had THE SAME router and it DID in fact, connect to the Internet, using the same router and all. So my question is, how do I fix this?

I've got a VPN setup on an ASA 5510, it connects fine and my users, and myself are able to remote desktop, and ping. However, when accessing the servers by hostname I get nothing. When I want to access a fileshare I have to do it by IP. I've got my internal DNS added in the config.

Region : UnitedKingdom
Model : TL-WR841N
Hardware Version : V8
Firmware Version : 3.13.27 Build 121101 Rel.38183n
ISP : Virgin Media
I have recently purchased and installed a TL-WR841N wireless router to replace an older system. After following all of the quick install guide and the like I got it set up and working correctly both wired and wireless. However one laptop in the household, an Acer Aspire 5315 running Windows Vista 32bit, does not connect. Using an ethernet cable works fine but the wireless signal is seen and appears to connect but does not find the internet and states Local Only Access. When connected wirelessly I also cannot ping the device but when connected with a cable I can and get a good return. The firmware is up to date on the router and the latop is full up to date with drivers and windows updates.

Its actually owned by the charity that i volunteer for and is connected to their private network and the internet ,When the user logs on in the morning, the laptop will not connect to the internet, it will also not connect to the shared network drive, so i can assume theres a local connection issue too,the user has to restart the laptop several times before the laptop will connect.

I have a wireless router with my sky broadband account. My computer crashed and when I repaired it without losing files etc, it wiped the system clean.I had to go from Vista to XP as the pc never had a recovery disc with it.I have also recently upgraded to Windows 7 extreme, however the problem remains the same in that, the pc will not detect the wireless router. However, my dads laptop which I am using now, DOES connect to the internet.I have spoken with Sky support and after going through all the usual checks and tests, they have decided it is a pc fault.

Recently my laptop has had problems connecting to any wireless routers.
Now and then it will connect but not for very long - 10-15 mins max, then connection will be lost even though the signal strength is strong. It sometimes connects after it has been asleep for a while or when it's been turned off.

A couple weeks ago my HP laptop stopped working. It would not boot and I had to put in the recovery discs to get it working again. Before this the laptop had connected fine to my home wifi secured with WPA2-PSK[AES]. After this problem tho it refuses to connect while it is secured. When not secure it functions fine and I am currently using it to type this post. I would have no problem continuing to use the wifi unsecured but another member of my household works with confidential medical information from home and is worried about the lack of security. I have attempted the trouble shooting tips on the support website already. My computer model is HP G60-235DX and the router is a Netgear N300 model WNR2000v3[CODE]

About a week ago my laptop stopped connecting to the internet for no apparent reason as it had connected just fine the night before. It's a Toshiba and the wireless router I use is a belkin. Every other wireless device from my brother's laptop to my Ipod can connect to the internet just fine. Even the PC connected to the router via ethernet cable can get online. I've tried unplugging the modem, resetting my IP address, directly connecting with an ethernet cable to the router, and resetting my router. My internet browser, IE, used to freeze up but I had a friend look at and he only managed to have it unfreeze[CODE]

My older Inspiron XP laptop will not connect to internet but connects to router. Local business tech said it was probably the hard drive & wanted to install new hard drive ($260). I feel perhaps I need to update driver for wireless modem, etc. But since I cannot connect to internet, I have no way of updating (I'm using my newer Windows 7 laptop currently which does connect thru the router). Can I download a driver onto a flash drive & install that way? Also, is there a way I can test the XP computer by connecting directly to the router with a cable & if so what kind of cable do I use to check if it will connect? I'm trying to research any possibility of fixing this XP computer because it's too expensive to fix hard drive. Also, everything else works on XP laptop, except Norton which needs to update & cannot without connection.

It says unidentified connection when we connect to the network, and when we go to the "connect to" and connect to the network i setup it will sometimes say "with limited access"!?I have used the diagnose tools on his computer. I have restarted his computer, the modem and the router. We have disconnected and reconnected several times to the network for the new router but nothing works, the only way he can get on the internet with this router is if plugged directly to it with an ethernet cable. We have put the old router back up but I really don't want to keep using it, it is so old and I don't remember the password for it.

my laptop only connects to the internet when the router is off, then switched on. If the router is on when I turn my laptop on it won't connect, but it always connects when I do it the other way around. Other devices (like phones) connect to the internet via the same router flawlessly, it's just the laptop that, for some reason, needs to be on first.

I recently got an access point to extend the wireless range in my house. It is a Netgear WN802T. The long and short of it is, it works fine, i configured it succesfully, it reaches the main router and gets an IP address from it. My laptop connects to it fine without fuss. However, my phone (HTC Desire HD) and tablet (Motorola Xoom) are unable to connect. They can 'see' the access point, but when i connect and put in the passcode, it get's stuck on 'scanning' or 'disconnected'. I've tried turning certain settings on and off, i've tried taking it out of G/N mode and taking it down to B/G mode.
I've tried multiple types of security (WPA-PSK, WPA-PSK 2, TKIP, AES...), the odd thing is, the type of security my main router uses (which the phones connect to without a hitch) does not work. I have tried different channels. My main router's channel is 1, which works perfectly fine. To make sure there is little interference, i set the AP channel to 4. I've also tried auto, no avail.
The laptop doesn't seem to care what i change the settings to, it connects fine and gets the internet perfectly. But my phone and tablet just don't want to play ball. I don't think the router is broken or anything, it works fine, but i think there's some incompatibility issue here that i'm not seeing.
