I have also tried all these options. Selected run as administrater when resetting they were all successful but still get local only connection with wireless, hardwired, and usb to enet adapter.

Due to lack of space and generally needing to be refreshed, I used my recovery CDs to "factory reset" my laptop to the way it was when I bought it. After it finished I attempted to use the Internet wirelessly and it would only connect locally. I chose to repair the signal in the "network and sharing" window and it said it could not communicate with the DNS server. I plugged in the Ethernet cable and it jumped right online. I used windows update and after 4 hours of updates and restarts, I tried wireless again it only connects locally. Back to ethernet I logged onto HP website and tried to scan my computer for driver updates with there tool but the site was down. I checked my adapter and it is an atheros 5007 but when I searched for atheros or atheros drivers I couldn't find anything that seemed legit. They don't have a website? I read forums and found posts of people shutting off a DHCP broadcast flag with good luck. I found a few �having problems with the same adapter as myself but none of this started until I restored it this time. ( I have restored it 2 times before with no problem). My next step was shutting off all the security. It worked and everything was great until i turned the security back on. It reverts back to local only. I tried wpa, wpa2 and no luck. The only thing I can think of is that my drivers are old, I checked the version of windows and it still is on sp1, why hasn't it updated to sp2 yet?

I restored an old Vista laptop to out-of-the-box state to give to my Dad. This laptop had a wireless connection to the internet and network previously. After the restore, I can't get a connection to the internet, even though my router sees it and it has an ip address. It says Unidentified Network Local Access only, and it doesn't see any of the computers on the network. Sometimes the other computers see it but can't connect, sometimes, the other computers don't see it. I hate Vista.

All my other eight devices have an internet connection no problem, but I powered off the modem and router a couple of times with no change. I tried updating the Atheros to the latest driver on Toshiba's website for this model, but it doesn't seem to take. If I uninstall the old drivers, Windows rudely just immediately reinstalls them again. If I just update the driver, and pick the new file, the driver version remains the same as the previous driver. I'm banging my head on the wall with the driver

I've just recently bought a second hand Acire laptop is v.good condition, it does everything fine apart from connect via wireless.I have another laptop which can connect on it's wireless and the Acer laptop can get a connection if you use a network cable directly to the router.I have a Sky phone & Broadband package.

I upgraded my old Linksys wrt54g to the E1500. All the XP os are connected via cable and wireless connection, but the Vista laptop i get local access only connection error. This laptop used to connect on the older router using wep but with E1500 wpa-2 it cannot connect. I am unable to ping the router from the laptop wireless. Connecting ethernet cable it works fine and logging in as a guest works does too.

My HP laptop connects to our wnr0003(or whatever it is) router but it says local only. When we took it to best buy, it connected there to the Internet oddly. And even odder, last year we had THE SAME router and it DID in fact, connect to the Internet, using the same router and all. So my question is, how do I fix this?

However, when accessing the servers by hostname I get nothing. When I want to access a fileshare I have to do it by IP. I've got my internal DNS added in the config.

I have recently purchased and installed a TL-WR841N wireless router to replace an older system. After following all of the quick install guide and the like I got it set up and working correctly both wired and wireless. However one laptop in the household, an Acer Aspire 5315 running Windows Vista 32bit, does not connect. Using an ethernet cable works fine but the wireless signal is seen and appears to connect but does not find the internet and states Local Only Access.When connected wirelessly I also cannot ping the device but when connected with a cable I can and get a good return.The firmware is up to date on the router and the latop is full up to date with drivers and windows updates.
Installed new N600 router and every box in the house can access the internet - except for my Vista powered laptop. My network shows up as Unidentified network with 'locla only' access. Ben scouring message boards all day. Can't find a solution at Microsoft.

Now and then it will connect but not for very long - 10-15 mins max, then connection will be lost even though the signal strength is strong. It sometimes connects after it has been asleep for a while or when it's been turned off.
A couple weeks ago my HP laptop stopped working. It would not boot and I had to put in the recovery discs to get it working again. Before this the laptop had connected fine to my home wifi secured with WPA2-PSK[AES]. After this problem tho it refuses to connect while it is secured. When not secure it functions fine and I am currently using it to type this post. I would have no problem continuing to use the wifi unsecured but another member of my household works with confidential medical information from home and is worried about the lack of security. I have restarted his computer, the modem and the router. We have disconnected and reconnected several times to the network for the new router but nothing works, the only way he can get on the internet with this router is if plugged directly to it with an ethernet cable. I have a compaq presario that will connect to my wireless network but when i open internet explorer or mozilla firefox the page will not load and says that the server cannot be found. i don't think the router is the problem since i have a separate computer that connects just fine wirelessly and a ps3 that connects to the internet just fine. the only way i have been able to access the internet with the compaq is plugging it into the modem with the ethernet cable but i want to connect wirelessly.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently got an access point to extend the wireless range in my house. It is a Netgear WN802T. The long and short of it is, it works fine, i configured it succesfully, it reaches the main router and gets an IP address from it. My laptop connects to it fine without fuss. However, my phone (HTC Desire HD) and tablet (Motorola Xoom) are unable to connect.They can 'see' the access point, but when i connect and put in the passcode, it get's stuck on 'scanning' or 'disconnected'. I've tried turning certain settings on and off, i've tried taking it out of G/N mode and taking it down to B/G mode.
I've tried multiple types of security (WPA-PSK, WPA-PSK 2, TKIP, AES...), the odd thing is, the type of security my main router uses (which the phones connect to without a hitch) does not work. I have tried different channels. My main router's channel is 1, which works perfectly fine. To make sure there is little interference, i set the AP channel to 4. I've also tried auto, no avail.
The laptop doesn't seem to care what i change the settings to, it connects fine and gets the internet perfectly. But my phone and tablet just don't want to play ball. I don't think the router is broken or anything, it works fine, but i think there's some incompatibility issue here that i'm not seeing.
