Wireless Router Randomly Locks Out Devices From Connecting
May 30, 2012
Wireless router started randomly not allowing any wireless devices to connect to the network. A wired cable worked fine, but not wireless. So we had to unplug the router and then it would work fine. You could see the device, but not connect. We moved our wireless phone a little farther away from the router thinking it was interfering, but still no luck. It didn't matter if it was an iPod, our BluRay player, or a laptop.

My WRT54G router locks up 100% of the time when attempting to connect connect wirelessly to a Samsung Blue Player (Model number BD-P3600). I can connect to it with a cable no problem, but when I attempt to do so wirelessly and type in the password on the Blue Ray player, it attempts to connect but the router locks up and all devices connected to it (wired or wirless) lose connectivity

I have 3 computers in total: 2 desktops and 1 laptop.
1. My primary PC is connected physically to my router.
2. My (downstairs) laptop is connected to the wireless.
3. My other PC connects to the wireless network via USB wireless adapter.
I was having issues getting #3 connected to the wireless network. I used the Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ PIN number provided to me by the Linksys Wireless Manager to no avail. The E3000 router and #3 could never find each other. After calling support, it turns out that more often than not, "other" wirless management software (in my case Linksys Wireless Manager that came with the USB device) was interfering with my Windows XP Wireless Manager.Rule of thumb: Always let your native operating system manage the wirless networks that are available to it. It does a far better job and is 10x more reliable than software provided by 3rd party vendors.Specific to my case: Windows XP, I had to enable the Windows Wireless Manager and uninstall the Linksys Wireless Manager Software. Here it is...Enabling Windows Wireless Manager These directions are for Windows XP:
1) From the Windows Start menu, click Control Panel.
2) Click Network and Internet Connections.
3) Click Network Connections.
4) Right-click the icon for your "wireless network connection", then click Properties.
5) At the top of the window, click the Wireless Networks tab.
If the "Wireless Networks" tab does not appear between the "General" and "Advanced" tabs, you are not on/in the wireless network connection settings:a) click cancelb) Right-click the icon for your wireless connection and choose "Enable". c) return to step 4 6) Check the checkbox next to "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings".
These directions are for Windows Vista:
1) Go to the Windows start menu and then the control panel.
2) Open Network and Sharing Center.
3) Click Manage Network Connections (from the left side menu).
4) Right click on the network adapter 'Wireless Network Connection' and choose "Properties" and click "Continue".
5) At the top of the window, click the "Wireless Networks" tab.
If the "Wireless Networks" tab does not appear between the "General" and "Advanced" tabs: a) click cancel b) Right-click the icon for your wireless connection and choose "Enable". c) Return to step 4
6) Check the checkbox next to "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings".

Just replaced a long-serving WRT54GS with an E2500 to gain a single feature… DHCP reservations for a bunch of web cams around my home. So far, the owner/user-experience with the 2500 has not been as positive as it was for the 54 or any of it's predecessors here and at my business. They just worked when you set them up, and once set up, they stayed set up. Zero futzing around with details. Some issues I'm seeking more expert input on:
My Panasonic Viera DVD/blueray player can access the web. Worked fine on the 54… access "Network" and 50% of the time it would join the network then and the other 50% of the time, you had to try a second time which I presume was the time it took for the device to gain access to the network. With the 2500, you can't ever (so far) get on by selecting "Network"… you have to go into the sub menu and have it dwell in the Network menu where it appears to make an ongoing effort to get onto the network. About 30% of the time, you get on… the other 70% no joy.My HP wireless printer will join the network if you dive into its menu system and tell it to look for the network. However, sitting at any of the computers on the network, you can't "get the printer's attention"… it just doesn't join and the print fails. You go over and use the printer's menu manually to get it on and it stays on for a short time, but it soon quits and that's the ball game.My Google Nexus One phone is a slightly different experience… it goes off the network as soon as you shut the screen down but, it seems like it comes back when you turn it on. With the 54, it seemingly remained in touch with the network better… things came in over the net while it was in my pocket. So, works better than the other two but I don't see why it goes away when on the 54 router, it didn't seem to.
In case it matters, this system is set up with DHCP, WPA2/personal and MAC filtering as was the case on the router(s) it is replacing. UPnP has been disabled. On 1.0.03 of the firmware. There are 6 DHCP reservations which also receive port forwards. I have adjusted the Beacon Interval, Frag threshold and RTS threshold for both frequencies and the MTU, all in accordance with recommendations under the support area for this site. Since everything worked well for both the 54 and its predecessor, I have to believe it's the 2500 that's the problem.

I I use a Linksys E3000 router. Sometimes when I look at the network map I see a device called "Unknown." It appears as though the two notebooks sometime are going through this device to access the Linksys E3000. (I've checked when both notebooks are on and I can determine what devices are connecting directly to the router and what devices are going through this unknown device.) Is there any way to determine what this unknown device is?

I was attempting to use my EA4200 in bridge mode but found out for some reason my devices weren't connecting to the internet. So I decided to try to access the router through the IP address of the router with no avail. So I pull the router and plug it in normally and notice that it keeps flashing. So that already gives me an idea something is wrong. I go through the process of unplugging everything from the router, and plugging my PC directly into the LAN port 1 of the router then powering it up. On my network connection list it keeps trying to identify the network but keeps failing (keep in mind that the router still is flashing). So I decide to attempt a 10 second reset, then a 30 second, then a 30-30-30. All with no success. The router keeps flashing.
Which gets me to the point where I am now... router flashing at me, and wondering if this now out of warrenty unit was a waste of money. I am noticing that a lot of people have had questions and issues with the E4200v2 which now concerns me, well hopefully this can be fixed.

my E1000 router locks up and I lose Internet connectivity until I unplug the router's power cord, wait for 10 seconds or so, then plug it back in and let it restart. This seems to be triggered (a.) when I land on a web page with intensive graphics, etc., that takes a while to load, or (b.) if I launch a web page really quickly while another one already is up. it doesn't just happen spontaneously when I'm working on the computer. This computer I'm working on is old and slow, which is why as per my earlier inquiry about having to reconfigure the router and network , I'm looking at changing to an up to date and faster model. I just updated to the latest firmware, probably a week or so ago, but the router was doing this before then and still is doing it now.

I'm using the E4200 in Bridge mode and it's handing out IPs from our DHCP server (not acting as it's own). I have about 8 people connecting to this wirelessly to get to our network. For some reason it locked up once every week or two and I have to unplug it (can't even remote into it).

My e4200v2 which I have been using for about 4 months locks up or freezes regularly - as often as once or twice a week. That is to say the wired laptop can't reach the router and the smart phone does not have a signal. This often happens when there is no phone or computer running. My current firmware is 2.0.37 and it just happened again. The logging capability is absolutely terrible so you can't tell why or when it went down, and what happened just before it went down. I pull the plug on power and when it comes back the log is clean. avoid the freezing/lockup or for logging incoming and outgoing with timestamps?

All my devices (Smart Phone, 2 PC's, a laptop and a Nintendo Wii) connect using my BT Homehub 2.I'm not sure what the cause is but it seems that all my devices randomly get disconnected from the Homehub? The broadband connection seems to be fine and all the lights are normal and the BT Homehub2 option is still displayed in network options. But whenever I try to connect again it just says "Windows was unable to connect to your network".I have to physically restart the router to get the devices to reconnect, and having doing so on a regular basis has meant my IP Profile has been dropped at my exchange as it thinks it'll "keep a stable connection"?Would it be worth changing the channel and security type? (Currently using WPA)

This is my current config:
Offsite Central Office
-------- ----------------- --------------- ------------------------------ ----------------- ---------- -------
| PC | | 3560-EMI | | ASA501 | | Comcast Business | | ASA5520 | | 6509 | | PC |
-------- ----------------- --------------- ------------------------------ ----------------- ---------- -------
I've got a VPN L2L tunnel between my offsite and my central office. Everything seems to work most of the time, but every now and then i loose connectivity to random devices.for example, right now I cannot ping the interface on the 3560-EMI, however i can ping the PC on the other end of it. A few minutes from now, the 3560 will be pingable and i will probably notice another device that is no longer accessible. It almost seems as if the ARP table is corrupt or inconsistant. Another example would be 2 separate PCs on the Offsite side, I can ping one but not the other. If i telnet into the 3560 i can ping both PCs without issue, but once i get to the other side of the ASA5520 I no longer can see both devices...A few minutes later the second PC will be visible again from the Central Office.

The problem that I'm having is basically that my router isn't giving right ip addresses to my devices. I've tried to connect a wireless printer (HP for doubts) and the router gave a 169.254.XXX.XXX ip address to it. If I unplug/plug the router, the problem is solved. It can also be fixed by using the "reboot device" tool that the router has at the configuration page. But this only works for some hours, so it isn't
Now, it isn't a printer problem. It has also happened with some notebooks, with around 5 to 6, not all of them. I've tried changing channels, resetting the router, changing password, security password type, changing firmware (present is 3.11NA H/W C2), and nothing can fix it.

I have a linksys wrt54g router. i need to block all devices except one from plugging in a wired device into the back of the router. i tried the mac filtering, but i didnt work. Is that for wireless only?I can also block local ips (192.168.1.x), and was going to go that route and only allow my local computer but i was afraid if i restarted my router or computer the ip would change and i would be locked out.

The laptops and the desktop in my home connect perfectly fine to our wifi, but all other devices like our iPhones, iPads, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, and a 2006 hp laptop will either show a connection, but the connection doesn't actually work, or there will be a broken connection shown to our wifi. All these devices (except the Nintendo devices[only because we haven't tried it out]) will connect and perform on wifi elsewhere. We have a d-link router?

I have a network that has a pair of 6500 switches on either end, running HSRP. In between each 6500 are two to three ruggedcom switches. They are connected to each other and the 6500's by trunk ports in a straight line. The 6500's see each other as CDP neighbors, and the 6500's can see the rugged- com as LLDP neighbors (ruggedcom only supports LLDP).
The issue is that randomly devices on the ruggedcoms will drop offline and then come back. The problem is that the devices that drop offline are all in the same VLAN, so it appears like a virus - i.e. one device drops off, then multiple. Eventually the HSRP starts flapping between the two 6500s and this causes havoc on the network.I'm almost to the point of taking a laptop and plugging it into one of the ruggedcom's to see traffic, but the issue is that the ruggedcoms are outside in cabinets that laptops shouldnt be exposed to.

I have installed my new E4200 and it works beautifully. I have several wirelss adapters and a few wired connections through powerline adapters. I also have a second VPN router attached to the 4200.I can see the wireless connected devices with the associated IP addresses. If I plug a laptop directly into the Cisco, I can of course see it.However, I can see none of the devices attatched to the powerline devices? I have a securty cam connected via the powerline and want to know the IP address. I checked with cisco technical support via chat and they said it is impossible. I have used 2 previous routers with the same configuration and can see all devices.

Every time I use internet applications, browsers, game clients, games, etc. the computer will completely lock up and I am required to manually reboot it. All devices stop working and the only way to get it working again is to hard reset. I'm so fed up with it, and have tried virtually everything. On top of that, I am getting only 1-9 Mbps download speed, opposed to all my other wireless devices, which are getting 34-36, which is what my wired connection is.
Here are my specs:
Core i5 3570k
16GB DDR3 Corsair
1000w Kingwin
Zotac 4gb GTX 680
240 Sandisk Ultra SSD
z77 AsRock Extreme 4 motherboard
D-Link DWA-556 Xtreme N Wifi Card
Windows 7 Professional x64 bit
Also, When first installing the card, I used to get around 34 Mbps, as this started occurring just in the past week or so. It works fine in other computers though and my signal strength is showing 100%.

1552E Rap will "lock" up, and not allow MAPs to connect through it to join. the WLC. Rebooting the Rap will resolve the issue, but the problem comes back and some random point in the future. Prior to rebooting the Rap to fix the issue, the Rap shows as joined to the WLC, but I have noticed that the neighbor details look stale, meaning my MAPs don't show up as neighbors, but other MAPs in the area are in the neighbor list, listed by MAC address. At this time, I can not confirm whether or not the neighbor detials are changing (updating), but I can confirm that my MAPs never show up as neighbors. As soon as the RAP is rebooted, MAPs join the controller again.

These devices are XBox 360 Elite with wireless N adapter, 2 wireless N Roku Players, and Lexmark X6570 Printer. Is there some way to get the router to see these devices as N capable short of forcing everything to connect as 802.11n?

I would like to connect a variety of wireless devices in my house to my work VPN while allowing other devices in the house access to my home network as normal.I was hoping to find a wireless ADSL router that allows me to associate a LAN port to a VPN connection, then connect a wireless access point to that port. I could then run two wireless networks in my house, one that would connect to my work VPN and the other that would not.

I recently purchased the Linksys E1500 and at first, had no problems with it. The last few days I've had issues however. I tried logging into the internet and my WIRED computer would not connect. My wifes WIRED computer next to mine didn't have any trouble connecting. Resetting my computer didn't work. I had to cycle the router by unplugging it! Then today, my (2) kids are using Pandora on their (2) computers wirelessly, and same set up with my wifes computer and mine, and again only my computer looses access from the router and all other computers stay connected.

About a month ago, my E2000 Cisco Router stopped working, just after warranty expired (how awesome!) where as either WiFi worked or Wired but not both. I know Cisco will normally grant you a grace period (from experience) but sending it to the Czechs and pay for postage.. wait 4 weeks and then have internet again.. is not an option (did that last time)So this time.. I spend a bit more and bought the E4200. 4 weeks later, the IP changes from a 192 to a 17x .. pretty anoying when being abroad and needing to access the NAS since you do not know what IP it took.. I restored the config upon return.. and all seemed normal again and I left for the next trip. One day later (today).. again.. no connection.. wife has internet she says.. so again the same issue.. the **bleep** thing took another IP.
