Is there any way that I can boost the WiFi signal on my laptop? It is a HP Pavilion dv7, originally had Windows Vista x64, but I wiped the HD and installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and went to the HP website to get ALL of the drivers that I needed for this specific laptop.

The signal strength I get is very low, whereas people in the same location get good strength with other laptops like Sony etc.Is there any way of improving the signal strength without disturbing the router/modem, like some software/ hardware changes in the Laptop. Dell havent answered yet.

I have heard of the terminology and it's quite daunting... you have wifi booster, access point, range expanders, repeaters, bridges...etc. Do I need one of booster/expanders/repeaters for each floor? The property is a L shape, the router is in the office on the short side.

At one location (less than 30 feet away) but through multiple walls, I can barely connect to any POS (I have two). I installed the drivers, plugged it in, since then, i have had 2-3 bars constantly, mostly 2 bars, The router is only 8-10 Feet away from me in the next room which is seperated by a very thin wall, It cuts off all together if a body stands in front of it, such as my brother coming in to chat. When using manual configuration mode on the router, I have set the WiFi power level to 100% (default level). Is there a way to increase that level beyond 100% and "overdrive" the signal? I tried to input a number >100% and that was not accepted.
I know this is possible if I go to dd-wrt, and possibly with open-wrt, which I prefer not to do for various reasons, not the least of which is that I have both a Rev. A1 and a Rev. B1 router (Rev. A1 is not supposed to support dd-wrt). I also know that increasing the power will make the router run hotter. I am willing to risk it as I monitor the temperature regularly.
Has anyone ever tried to do this or, have the people who want this just gone to dd-wrt? From the dd-wrt forum it appears that the DIR-825 router in Rev. B1 is not very user friendly to dd-wrt. After 3 years the code is still flaky. I would prefer not to use it, if possible.
I use a Linksys WRT54GR router. I recently bought an iPad, and I generally use it in a room that is on the other side of the house and through many walls. When it works, it works nice. But recently, my signal has been weak, and is often dropped. Pages load slowly, or not at all after getting a could not connect to server or whatever message. However, this isnt a huge problem for my laptops when used in this room. I dont believe it is the iPad that is faulty because my iTouch also experiences difficulty sometimes. I need a way to increase the signal strength for a longer distance. I looked at a repeater, but im not quite sure what it is and how to set one up, or where to buy one.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Virgin Media XXL broadband in the UK. I have Avast antivirus. Windows firewall is enabled and all security updates are up to date. I have a 50mbit virgin fiber optic broadband which is working fine on my flatmate's pc's. While making sure the internet wasn't being used my speedtest still returned around 1mbit with full signal strength. I have run speedtest on 3 pc's at the same time and 2 of them were over 30mbit while mine was still barely 1mbit. I am using an Edimax EW-7811Un nano usb adapter. From reviews I read that it should work great with Virgin. But for some reason it doesn't work well despite the full signal strength.

When I am using my Laptop, an HP Pavilion dv6 running Windows 7 with an AMD quad Core cpu, not the fastest of computers!, I seem to get WIFi speeds as low as 1700 whilst at other times can get 5000. Laptop! Is the speed drop a "computer problem" or a router one? If I connect the Laptop to the LAN the speed will always be at about 5100. My desktop computer is connected to the LAN and has a speed of 5100.I have the usual security set on the Router.

I had no problems initially but the problems arise when sometimes my internet connection goes off.. after that when i switch on the internet connection then, all my device are back on track except for my laptop(HP Pavillion DV6000)

I got a brand new HP Pavilion dv7-6c20us laptop yesterday. I brought it with me to a buddies house last night, and it was working just fine.
When I got it home today, I set up the Internet connection and everything seemed fine. I started up a downloader for a video game (Diablo 3) and saw the DL speed climb up to the usual 800-850kb/s that im used to seeing on my desktop PC. It slowly started to decrease in speed, though.. All the way down to 80 bytes/s.. and then it stopped. The icon in the lower right side of my screen told me that I had a Limited Access(?) connection.. i then diagnosed the problem.. and it repaired it saying that "The Connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and ther internet is broken" I thought that it could be just because i was upstairs, and my router was downstairs... it should still be within range.. but i couldnt think of anything else. So i moved downstairs and i got it again sitting 5 feet away from the router.
It stays connected and then for no reason at all it just dissapears..or loses the connection.. when instructed it will repair it.. only to have it happen moments later.. I just tried surfing the internet without having the downloader for the game going and it took longer, but it still happened 5-10 minutes later.
For the time being, I just plugged the laptop in directly to the modem.. kinda ruins the point of a laptop though, you know!

How to successfully increas the signal range of the WRT310n? I live in a huge old place and the signal drops to one bar (dial-up speed) about 40 feet across the building. However, at the room before that (maybe 30 feet) my Apple Mac book gets great signal and it's no problem. Running a cable is unfortunately not an option.I also have a WRT300n (which was replaced this weekend with the 310n). Not sure which one really is better, but the 300n router's range didn't even make it as far as the 310n does. (There was weak signal, no active bars.) Someone suggested adding a more powerful antenna to that router instead?
