Cabling / Cards :: CAT5 Ethernet Cables Not Working

Jul 14, 2011

I live in a frat and I am currently researching how to design and configure the most efficient network for the house. However, one of the other big problems we have is connectivity of our ethernet cables. We have an IT room with 2 switches that feed ethernet cables to all parts of the house and connect to an ethernet box in the wall where we can simply wire in our internet connection. We have wireless routers too but to keep the bandwidth usage across the WAP's I want to let people use the wired connections. However, many of the connection in the house do not work at all. I plug in my laptop to the wall jack and it gives me the No Internet Access notice. I don't understand why it works in some rooms and not others. All jacks seem to go into the same switches at the other end so I cannot figure out what the problem could be.

Cabling / Cards :: Cat5 Not Working Past 25Ft

May 22, 2012

We are setting up a network in our new house. We have the internet entering the garage. From there we have a 60 ft Cat 5 cables run through the crawl space. Orginally we had the wireless router attached to the end of the cat 5 and then attached to the computer. We could not get a connection through this wire. We then took out the cable, and ran a new one, same issue. We took the same cable, cut it down to 25 feet, installed the router in the garage and we have an excellant connection. We then ran a new wire through the crawl space from the router. Same issue, no connectivity. Taking that cable out, cutting it down we ran the wires from the router to our computers in the garage. why a Cat5 cable would not work at 60Ft.?

Cabling / Cards :: How To Connect CAT5e Cable To GE Wallplate

Dec 5, 2012

I am trying to connect CAT5e riser cable to a GE #76536 network and phone wall plate. The problem I am having is the CAT5e cable has 4 twisted pairs of wires as follows: blue/white, green/white, orange/white and brown/white. The wall plate connection has 8 distinct colors; blue, white, green, orange, yellow, black, red and brown. (or at least that's what they look like to me)None of the white wires from the CAT5e cable have any striping. They are all solid white. I've found color charts for matching striped wires, but I am at a loss to figure out how to connect these white wires to the proper terminals

Cabling / Cards :: Cannot Connect To Internet Through Ethernet Cable

Dec 12, 2012

Ive been using an Ethernet cable to connect to the Internet for a while now, it was working fine up to yesterday where I left my desktop open for a few hours and came back to find that I have no Internet connection.

I used my laptop to test the cable out and it works fine, the wireless works fine too. There doesnt seem to be anything wrong with the modem since I still have Internet on the PS3. I used a different cable to test the modem again with my laptop and I had internet access. The desktop is still connected to the modem but it only gives me a network connection with no Internet.

I tried restarting the modem but it still wouldnt work and I also tried to disable then enable the connection.

Im using Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller with the latest driver.

T568B Wall Jack Wiring?

I'm wiring up the house with CAT6 (I've never done this before). Someone told me to use 'T568B' termination. Every configuration I see on net looks different, and I'm getting confused.

The jacks have double colour coding for each wire as pictured here:I take it 'A' is for T568A, and 'B' is for T568B?So this is how I should arrange the wires for T568B:

Running Cat6 UTP In Same Wall Cavity

Mar 8, 2013

I have done similar with cat5e in the past, but only operating at 100mb/s. The gigabit stuff I have done so far has had the power in a separate stud cavity. My structured wiring project will be installed in one stud cavity in the soon to be new home office. Not exactly using a structured wiring cabinet, but rather using a 7u wall mount relay rack bracket. The cabling will be entering using 2 separate header penetrations. One existing just inside on the right side of the stud cavity carries 110V 12/2 romex to a stud attached box / recepticle. The other side gets the new penetration, a minimum of 12" away. That's the one that the ethernet cable will pass through. The cable runs will run through the wall and through a brush plate, and then to the patch panel.

The Cat6 cable is UTP, and is marked for in wall use. This is the stuff with the spline if that matters. The romex, by code MUST be attached to the stud, and it is, the cat6 on the other hand is allowed to be loose in the wall. I do not plan on having enough slack in the wall for the cat6 to ever get closer than 8" from the romex, and no closer than 10" from the electrical box.Is that separation sufficient to avoid inductive noise on the ethernet cables? Like I said, I have done similar with Cat5e and no problems ever, but only attached to 10/100 networks. I can change stud cavities, but would rather stick with the one so that my ethernet, and power both can enter the rack cleanly.

Terminate CAT6 Home Runs With Male RJ45 Or Female Keystone Jack?

Jul 8, 2013

I'm going to be running CAT6 throughout my house (once I figure out all the paths and buy the cable) with the home runs going to a patch panel in the basement.

I've been wondering if I should terminate each cable with a male RJ45 end and use a patch panel with RJ45 female-female keystone couplers or; terminate each cable with a female RJ45 keystone jack and snap it into a keystone patch panel.

I'm just wondering if there are any pros and cons to each, each method seems to be exactly the same, just buying different pieces.

I already have one 2x8pin PCI express power cable powering a GTX280 (along side its 6x6 pin cable). It has two male 8 pin ends (One is 6+2, the other is just 8).

I want to install my second GTX280 too but I only have a 6x6pin cable. I need a 8x8 aswell. The GTX280 requires one 6x6 and one 8x8 output. Where do I find one?

I CANNOT FIND ANOTHER 8+8 PCI EXPRESS CABLE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. Not EBAY, not any website on earth. Not my retailer or producer. ?

How else can i power the card properly? My PSU has no molex options. My PSU only accepts PCI express 2.0. My PSU is Everest 1200w with 4 of each type of socket.

Cabling / Cards :: Ethernet Cable Unplugged Message But It's Not

Apr 12, 2011

Can't log on to computer running win xp sp3. I'm getting message that ethernet cable is unplugged but it's not unplugged. The modem/router was installed by Verizon (for FIOS connection) in February 2011. Internet was working fine until a couple of days ago. I have looked at other posts on this issue but have found nothing that would solve the problem. My old dial-up modem was still installed in the computer and had a question mark on it in device manager so I removed it. I thought maybe there was an IRQ conflict as the modem used to use IRQ 11 and the network card (linksys) uses that sometimes as well as IRQ 10 but that didn't work.

I just bought a 30m CAT6 cable which I installed inside the house, now since my router is on the floor above me I bought a 30m cable to be able to have it downstairs. I don't really know if it has something to do with the PC or if it is the length of the cable that is the problem. But when I try the PC on the main floor the speed is 15-20mbit/s and when I try it on my PC downstairs, all I get is a maximum of 10mbit/s. The strange thing is that ping/jitter is the same both upstairs and downstairs?

Cabling / Cards :: Switch To Interconnect Exterior Cable To Interior One

Jul 28, 2011

I am designing a cabling system to interconnect all the buildings in my school. In one of the building, I have 2 patch panels and switch to interconnect cables that comes into the building with cables that runs to the rooms. From what I understand, connectivity should be something like this:

1. Exterior cables coming in through the entry point.
2. Exterior cables terminates at the back of patch panel.
3. Patch cables run from the front of patch panel to a switch.
4. Patch cables run from the switch to another patch panel which connects the interior cabling that runs to the wall socket in each room.

My question:

1. Which ports should I use on the switch to interconnect exterior cable to the interior cable? They should be a connection between the exterior cabling and the interior cabling and both terminates in the same switch, but different ports. How do you allow communication to happen?

2. How do connect all the buildings to the router that connects to the internet?

Cabling / Cards :: Broadcom Gigabit Controller Won't Recognize Cable (Dell XPS 1640)

Mar 1, 2011

A few days ago, I noticed that my computer wasn't picking up my wired connection anymore while the wireless connection was still working fine. I opened up my network adapters and my Local Area Connection adapter wasn't even showing anymore, only the Wireless adapter. I updated my drivers, tried different cables and even a different router but still no dice. This morning, when I booted up my system, Windows said it was installing driver software for Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet Controller. I got really excited when I saw Local Area Connection in my adapter menu and plugged in my ethernet cable. Nothing happened and my laptop refuses to recognize the ethernet cable plugged in to it. It's a Dell XPS 1640, Windows 7 x64 with Service Pack 1.

P.S. Usually a little orange light appears in the ethernet port on my computer when a chord is plugged in. When I turned on my computer this morning with the chord in, the light was on. When Windows finished booting, the light went off.

Cabling / Cards :: New PC Won't Connect To Internet

Dec 30, 2011

I can open files, play videos, run programs, etc. Windows installed without a problem. However, I can't connect to the Internet. At all. I can't even register my version of Windows because I can't contact Microsoft for verification, because the connection won't get through. No Internet devices can be detected. That was with a long cable wired directly to our router, which is next to our modem. So, today, I bought a D-Link Xtreme N Desktop PCI adapter to connect. Still no connection... I don't think the PC even detects the adapter, because the drivers coming with the adapter can't detect it, and the light on the adapter doesn't turn on.That shouldn't happen. Both the cable and adapter go directly into the motherboard. My operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit, and my motherboard is an Asus P8Z68-V PRO.My ISP is Cogeco. All other computers and wireless devices in the house work perfectly fine.
